Driving to Glacier National Park | Flathead Lake, cherries 🍒, rental car, & campfire pizza 🍕

- We made it to Montana! And for our first day, we drove to Glacier, with a few stops along the way. We checked out the gorgeous Flathead Lake, ate juicy Flathead cherries, and handled a few important tasks, like getting new bear spray, picking up our rental car, and dropping Kona off at a sitter. We then ended the day by attempting to make a campfire pizza. It was a busy, but fun day gearing up for tons of adventures the rest of the week!

I live in Bigfork and I go to Kalispell all the time. I've been on feild-trips and small day visits to glacier every year. I love Montana, but it is way to cold in winter.

That lake...those cherries...that pizza...A BEAR!!! Wow, what a great first blog! The pizza and cherries looked so yummy! The cherry trees were so beautiful! The lake and surrounding mountains were gorgeous! I know that this vlog was just a taste of what is yet to come...I CANNOT wait to see what’s up next!

*Tip* Heat skillet with plenty of oil BEFORE adding dough. Add dough to hot oil and cook on lower flame, flip, repeat.

the pebbles are gorgeous. I fell in love with that place when we visited in 2018. It's so quiet that you can hear the water trickling away! Love it!

Pizza partial success! What I have found really useful for the van are cooking implements that close up like a sandwich maker. They have proved great. Cool really quick. Keep the mess in.
Alas we went around the Canadian Rockies and never saw a bear.
I think a few people have recommended some recipes for us with one of those cooking tools! We will have to check it out! And we’re glad we aren’t the only ones who went to the Canadian Rockies and left bear-less haha

Hahaha it was almost better that it was such a fail! 🤣 And those cherries were amazing! We devoured them by that evening!
deep dish pizza helps… 1). preheat a well oiled pan including the sides (this is great for seasoning your cast iron) 2). dust pan with cornmeal before placing dough in pan (this will prevent dough from sticking Oh and bake over coals not flames.
We thankfully had a successful pizza attempt this past fall! (the preheating helped and we used parchment paper)

you could also try preheating the pan and spreading the crust on a plate and then dropping it in.
Someone actually emailed us with that exact suggestion too and now we extra trust that advice! We will definitely try that next time! 🍕

Have not been to Glacier in a long time but did travel to Big Sky and Yellowstone this summer. You two are awesome! Love, love your channel!! Thanks for taking us with you. We also have a dog (cattle dog) we travel with and well understand the extra trouble and effort - but our loyal companions are so worth it! North Forty Resort in Whitefish is a great place to stay with a dog.
Yellowstone is one of our favs! And we’re so glad you can relate to the extra logistics traveling with a pup brings. Definitely can limit us a bit, but we love having her with us ❤️ Thanks for the lodging tip-definitely will be back next summer and may go that route!
My husband and I just drove by there, the lake is HUGE !! We decided against a van conversion and bought a class c on a Mercedes sprinter chassis. 😃 We bought it in Kalispell Montana, it was a beautiful drive back home to Oregon. We missed Glacier, everything was closed, another trip next summer. Glad you had fun 😃

I worked at a camp right outside of Big Fork all summer and I'm so glad I can relive the memories through your vlogs! If you're ever back in Big Fork you need to get coffee from Vessel and eat at Burger Town. Its soooo good!!

I'm sending good BEAR mojo/vibes your way and hope that you all see one in the wild :) When I took the family to Alaska that was my main hope and in Ketchican we lucked out and saw a mama black bear and her cubs. My daughters were actually asleep with my wife in the shuttle van we were a part of and just when they appeared I turned to run to the van to wake them up and the walked up :) We were also lucky to see black bears at Mount Rainier last September. Both were quite magical moments and again hoping you get to see them
Oooo a bear in Alaska is the dream! I really want to see one grabbing fish out of a river haha, like those National Geographic clips! We mayyyy have more bears coming soon... stay tuned! 😉LOL as long as food tastes good, we don't care what it looks like!

Oh my god, Kathryn your reaction after seeing the bear is so similar to how I've reacted to seeing them in the past! That RV park was gorgeous - love it when you're in amongst the trees! You guys cooking was too funny 🤣, first the dough sticking, then Kathryn not being able to open the jar. I ❤️ how you guys shared this with the world and didn't cut it out! By the time you had the toppings on it, the pizza looked pretty good! Putting a little grease proof paper on the bottom of the pan could be a way to stop the dough from sticking if you were to have another go at these? I noticed in the Idaho series you guys were opening with the outline of the state and the name in the middle, and I've spotted it with Montana. Not sure if I've just been blind to you doing it previously or if it's new. Either way, it's a nice touch and looks really professional! 👍
Oh just wait...there mayyy or may not be more bears in the future and I think my reaction gets more obnoxious every time 😂 The RV park was so great! We are so lucky to have gotten a spot last minute and are so happy it had trees and wasn't like a typical RV park with zero privacy. The pizza did turn out awesome despite the mishaps lol! 😂 Thank you so much for the kind words on the intro! We have been trying this out for "series" (which in our mind is 5-7 episodes for one state, which we are trying to do more of!) to tie it all together! ❤
I was SHOCKED to learn Florida had bears! We didn’t see any when we visited, but couldn’t believe they exist there! Where do people see them?
That is freaking wild!!! We did stay in some forests when we were there. Thankfully no run ins, but it would’ve been cool to see one!

@@AdventuresofAplusK old boy scout trick. The biggest problem w/ cast iron is the heat retention. I used to make a lot of foil dinners- sausage, potatoes, and peppers, and onions.
We may be trying a foil dinner next! Got lots of suggestions with recipes!
I know you're busy but could you do a break down on average monthly expenses like: gas, insurance, van payments, food, activities, cell phones, etc. This is something I've always wanted to do.
This is a bit hard to cover since it really varies on the person and their lifestyle, how fast they travel, their internet needs, how much you put down on a van, etc, but we can try to put together something general at some point!
Great start to your Montana trip! Lots of logistics to work through with the rental car and Kona. Can't wait to see the hikes in Glacier. By the way, how much did you pay for the Bear Spray? We fly into Jackson so I'm renting at the JAC airport. Then we drive to Glacier and then Yellowstone and I can drop off the bear spray rental in Yellowstone. But curious how much you guys paid. I considered buying but it would be nice to have it once we land and they say unused bear spray sits in dumpsites and renting is better for the environment.
Hi Lorraine! It was about $50! Apparently you can get it cheaper, but we couldn’t do an Amazon Locker for it since I think it’s sort of considered a weapon. Renting is such a great idea if you don’t plan to be near bear hot spots anytime soon. I love that they offer that as an option! Especially since you’ll very likely not need it 🤞🏼🤞🏼
@@AdventuresofAplusK Thanks for the quick response! I think for you guys if you are in the area for awhile, it makes sense to buy. The rental is $28 and it doesn't matter how many days. It's $50 if you end up emptying it. I am also hoping it doesn't get used! I've been monitoring the trails at Glacier. Hidden Lake (still closed) and Avalanche Lake hikes were both closed a few days ago due to bear activity. We also plan to do Highline with the extra hike to Grinnell so I can't wait for your video on that!
We also like to think of it as protection for us in the van too! And it’s such a bummer about Hidden Lake and Avalanche Lake, as you’ll see in our upcoming videos, we didn’t get to do either, but we still had a blast with what we were able to do! And we 100% plan to go back next summer to visit the east side and do everything else we missed!
@@AdventuresofAplusK That is a bummer - sounds like you guys couldn't do Hidden Lake and Avalanche Lake. Yes, the Grinnell Lake hike at Many Glacier was on my list as well. I guess we will take what we can get!
We’re using it all as an excuse to go back! But it was a bummer to miss out on those. Thankfully the Highline trail and other trails are incredible too!

What is the range of costs for campsites? Walmart is free.
The RV Park was $60 a night, which is a lot more than we ever pay for campsites (typically we camp for free, but if we do pay it’s $20-30/night). But it was worth it to not scramble every evening for a free spot! And for the super hot, long showers with amazing water pressure haha

Where on earth did you find gluten free dough?
It was tough! We got it at this grocery store called Super 1 Foods! The brand is called Wholly Wholesome and they have a store finder on their website!
So you stayed in Polson?
We slept at the Walmart in Polson the night before filming this, but then went to a campground near Glacier for the rest of our trip.
