Chris Buck is so articulate in explaining his background and approach to playing, as well as his playing itself. An excellent way to spend 40 minutes.

Yep, but then again Frank Sinatra sang pieces of music. He wasn't just noodling. I have in my head songs like My Way and New York, New york. I can't remember anything Chris Buck has played 30 seconds after he stops. It's well articulated and polished but he has nothing to say with that voice. And there's unpleasant about it, but there's nothing of note either - perhaps partly because of that. It's the Stephen Fry of the guitar world, did elocution lessons and talks in a posh voice and every vowel sound is the correct one but didn't learn anything else so there's little point listening to him say anything - and, you know, there's probably more character when someone doesn't speak perfectly all the time. You know the best rock'n'roll singers probably are not as good Frank Sinatra, but that is kind of the point, right? Imagine Frank singing a Bon Scott song.
Think about all the guitarists of note, whether it's Eric Clapton through to Matteo Mancuso and they all have a piece of music or more that you can remember. That you could learn, play it and someone would say "That's that Guthrie Govan thing isn't it?" - but Chris so far as I can tell hasn't actually written any music. Here's the thing about 90% of the time, if I'm not listening something I have music in my head - some piece - and it's in extreme detail. I can hear Freddie Mercury et al singing and playing Bohemian Rhapsody or Guthrie playing Waves, Vai playing For the love of god. It's in my head and not just the lead guitar part - everything. Typically in these pieces if it's a band setting the solo is recognisable too - albeit for something like Van Halen it's the rhythm guitar that's detailed and nuanced. That's why people learn these things note for note because the solo was crafted - even if it was improvised over a couple of takes it's several steps above noodling. But when I watch someone noodling in a guitar shop some pentatonic shape - or a youtuber who is demoing a guitar and just switching the different pickups and push pull knobs, like the guys on Andertons - they're not playing music and nothing they do is memorable. And that is, so far as I can tell, all Chris does. Whether he's on stage or on youtube. Which is a pity because most of the youtubers can't play for shit. The Anderton's guys are especially bad (and I get a laugh every time they get a "signature" guitar) - but Chris can play notes and phrases yet doesn't write any guitar parts or pieces. Even when he's uploaded clips with a band he's just noodling with them - and the singer does an admirable job of looking excited while he waits for his turn to sing again - but there's nothing exciting happening.

Omg. Not even gonna lie. I listened to that opening piece about 7 times before I even got to the rest of the video. That swept all over me. Btw, first time I've ever heard chris buck. Great way of describing sam cook "effortless" makes so much sense ❤❤
Chris Buck is such a phenomenal, tasteful guitarist. He's one of those rare people who has technique, beautiful phrasing and an amazing touch. He's also one of those guitarists where you have to watch his right hand just as much as his left!

The thing I recognise instantly in Chris's playing is that he has a lot of strength in his left hand. He's able to play so gently, but to have that control required significant strength in the fingers.

I love Chris Bucks playing and have sat down for a number of hours, days, weeks, months, trying to pick apart his lines. But when I very first heard him, the very first thing that came in to my mind AFTER "fvcking holy sh8t" was--huh-- he is successfully doing what I've been trying to do for over a decade, which is make both my slide, and more importantly my non-slide guitar playing sound more like Derek Trucks. I think all of the best musicians that use the blues as a touchstone and sound good to my ear at least , play with a sensibiliy that emulates natural human vocal qualities...weather its the micro-tonalities imparted in a bend, in a vibrato, or, in the articulation of the note, or the way notes are grouped together in lines or phrasing. playing dead on any musical note-- or playing something straight sounds--well, straight, which is why its called that, and players versed in these genres understand the difference. I don't want to take anything away from any musician, and let me repeat, I have literally shed for hundreds of hours picking apart Chris Bucks work. I love his playing, I love his work ethic, I think he is an awesome and super likable guy and I 100% agree with statements that he is one of the most important players of this generation. But I do think that *when* we are discussing *why* we love his sound so much, that one has to also talk about Derek Trucks and how he originated in great part this sound we all love---the same way we discuss SRV and Albert King and Hendrix, or any of our icons and how they emulate in part pieces of *Their* icons. Go ahead a roast away guitar world ....I never check back with comments often, so, go ahead and do your worst.

Chris Buck shows that you don't need to be a shredder to be a great guitar player.
This is such an interesting approach to helping us lesser guitarists get a handle on some of the more crafty aspects of music. Watching Justin learn these uniquely Chris licks, and witnessing the way he needs to break the pieces apart to understand them, until fully metabolizing the concept as a part of his own playing, is such an insightful learning experience. Learning how others learn is an incredibly valuable lesson.

Chris is such a great player! The touch and 'feel' he has on the guitar is amazing. No wonder Justin (as well as many others) wants to learn how to add his accents into their vocabulary!
Classical music use notes but blues and jazz use also micro notes in between these. Chris Bucks is a master of finding them and know exactly how to articulate properly.

I don't know how I'm just seeing this now. What a great pairing for a vid. Justin makes the best teaching vids out there and Chris Buck is an absolute beast. I love the juxtaposition of Justin making things seem accessible and Chris' playing seem entirely out of reach for 99.9% of all people (because it is). And, I couldn't agree more on Sam Cooke. Close second being Otis Redding for me. You're both brilliant and watching you two interact is fantastic.

I just luv Chris's style and tone. For me the strat and the style of playing is just immense and what I'm aiming for in my own playing. (Somewhere in the distant future)😁
It's nice to see Justin struggle with something and his process to figure it out. I notice two things Chris does with his right hand. One, the little rakes he throws in using his middle finger, very Hendrixy sounding. And, he uses his thumb to mute strings when he's not picking with it. Helps keep things clean. You two are great together, more please.
This is absolutely fantastic! It's really interesting and just feels good watching really experienced players learn something new and get super stiff like when I'm learning something new, lol. Chris makes his first little slide technique at 4:56 look effortless but watching Justin struggle in the beginning is just so human and heartwarming after watching him absolutely just effortlessly wow us with his licks in the intro where he was more comfortable and loose.

Buck Magic influences my Favorite guitar teacher, great job men.
As a beginner learning that I had to have my volume maxed to get sustain, I was always touching strings I didn't want to (making weird noises). I learned from watching Chris, that he uses his thumb to hold the strings on top of his bends, so that they make no noise. It was driving me nuts and something so simple fixes it, Thank you Chris and Justin. My guitar teachers :)
