It's interesting cause I left the UK for Nigeria recently cause I couldn't get a job in my field, I was only offered labour-intensive jobs for a long while and I felt miserable, I'm not a lazy person but I could not put my pride aside. Today, I don't know if I regret it or not, but luckily with a UK Degree, I'm doing very well in Nigeria. Japa no be for everyone, having loved ones around for support and to support is fulfiling.

Sounds like my situation in Australia. Even with a PhD from Canada, they seemed so particular about the qualifications needing to be Aussie. After a while, I returned to Singapore. The first few years were extremely tough and I still plan to go back to Canada, but compared to Australia, where I was either stuck with joblessness or menial labour-intensive work, I am at least doing work which allows me to use my skills in university.
Well, I am glad that you are happy in Nigeria, but your situation may not be the same for everyone. I am in the academic sector, and I teach in a high school ( Biology teacher) here in Europe, which is very competitive. So many Nigerians work in their field of expertise while living abroad, and there are thousands of them. At the end of the day, whatever works for you, go with it. There is no right and wrong.

I have been happy ever since, it was the best thing I ever did in my life, today my grandchildren are Canadians and full of opportunities, I break the poverty circle in my family . my next generation won’t suffer hungry as I did !Thank GOD to place me here, I am a proud Canadian today. Went to Canada on a two year working visa. Only lasted a year. Had to come back home. Only Realised while living abroad how good it was in my own country.

No place like Nigeria, you pay rent once in a year, or build your own house. you can fill your gas cylinder once in 3 months, it’s your choice to use generator or solar panels or wait for nepa to give you light, you can be your own boss by being an entrepreneur, healthy foods are cheap. Primary and secondary education is great. You don’t have to live to work that’s all we do here. You don’t need to be socked in debt all your life. My honest prayer is to save and establish a business in port harcourt and go back as soon as possible.

Pay rent once in a year! Have you thought of struggles people go through to obtain the money? You talk about building your own house, you can also do so in many countries if you have the funds. Like she said, immigration is not meant for everyone. If people cannot live in those countries they should go back home. Countries are different and you should not expect the same in Nigeria, abroad.
Who told you that? I lived 26 years of my life in Nigeria. I can assure you that Nigeria is hell on earth.
I think breakup or regional Government is the only solution to Nigeria problems.

When I see retired people working just to make ends meet I cry, I even ask myself what is the purpose of man/existence is it just to work and pay bills? Tufiakwa. Africa is paradise.
This is the most level headed video I’ve watched regarding this immigration conversations. There’s very little introspection and research done before people immigrate. It’s not just moving to a location. It is an internal conflict about leaving all you know and even your identity and being open to starting from scratch and building an identity that’s adaptable to a new environment. This part is often missing and the “why”.

i did not discover what a wonderful place Nigeria was until I lived in Canada for 4 years! Despite the difficulties, Nigeria is home and it gives you the opportunity to build a life in your homeland. Nothing is free in this world. Whether its in Canada or in Nigeria, you must work and pay the price. For me, I discovered it is better to work and develop yourself in your homeland. I have been back home in Nigeria and I have never looked back. My advice to young people is that they should stay here and fight to develop our country. No matter how successful you may be in another man's country, one day you will hit the glass ceiling.

just do it at your own risk, first they came to Africa and forced slaves there on ship's, same thing going on now but you wilingly take yourself there and are enslaved economically, that plane ticket ride and opportunity is not a guarantee to success in a foreign land,
@@jamulandkim3957 Just be sure of your ‘Why’ whatever choice you make. Back in Nigeria, we are also enslaved by our leaders. If you are in the formal sector, you pay taxes but hardly see social amenities commensurate to the taxes. If the society was led responsibly, citizens won’t emigrate as much as they are doing. At the core of your choice should be your ‘Why’. Assuming emigration is indeed modern day slavery, then you can decide to be enslaved for a number of years, fulfill your ‘Why’ and buy your freedom 🤷♀️😊
How long you been in Nigeria? Many say they never looked back and they stayed only 6 months -1 year and left back to those rich countries.
I didn't say don't go there, cause it's different strokes for different folks, but what I said is after spending a year out there I believe that immigration is modern day slavery, and even more racism and discrimination esp to black's, working many hrs even 15 to 16 hrs, yes I agree home is not a bed of roses either but I'd rather be close to home and suffer than suffer in the hands of racists and kkk, thx.
This is one of the best videos I've seen on the immigration experience! When I was coming to Canada 2 years ago, I saw so many videos on how difficult life was for immigrants in Canada. Many people talked about doing back breaking work as their first job and how they regretted it. Nevertheless, I persevered, did extremely extensive research and came with my "Why". It's been 2 years and I don't regret a thing. Yes there were some "hardships" but I don't think they're any different from what I would have experienced back home. For example, my 1st job was at an icecream shop and I was constantly exhausted and it damaged the skin on my hands, but that job allowed me to pay my rent so I could stay and find better opportunities...and I did find a better job 4 weeks after starting at the icecream shop. Each job had their challenges but so did the jobs back home. Neither place is a bed of roses. Each place contains people just trying to live their lives. So just carry on and live your life. Thank you for this. It's a refreshing take on the whole immigration scenario.

You’re spot on #Danielle i was brought in by a company with a 2yrs closed permit so those first 2 yrs were like a nightmare to me but i soldiered through and get my certification, during those 2yrs immediately when my 2yrs were over I went straight to my professional job & 6 years down the line I’m super happy i can easily make 1/4 of million per annum without any stress.
Everyone wants their country to be developed by western or all other developed countries but how many people pay tax really in Nigeria, for example, if the economy were to perform so well, the situation will be the same in all the countries. What do we pay as car insurance in Nigeria, (#5,000per year-liability like $7 per year. Does that make sense. People have electricity and they don’t want to pay for it breaking laws with impunity. Nothing is wrong with the system in the west it’s just that there’s a lot of waste and fake living in underdeveloped world . There’s no free lunch abroad, you got to work to eke out a living unlike in our continent where a lot of people have access to ‘free’ money by crook or crude.
@@Odua1 please where do you have electricity and people refused to pay?, In my shop in bayelsa, l pay local govt shop permit, board of internal revenue, environmental sanitation, state shop license, extension fee, waste basket all these annually, yet they don't provide what they said. I still bought waste basket in the market, l still call boys to throw the dirts and pay them etc. the once they cut from salaries monthly where is it, where is the recoverd looted funds, where is the NNPC remittance, abeg leave Nigeria and their selfish leaders.

The problem is that communication between Africa and the western world is cut off, and lost in a filter. 99% of what we know about the West is "paradise", so when you come to Canada, reality slaps you in the face. U wake up, and you want go back home.
On the other hand, people in the West do the opposite, they are scared to go to Africa, because of what the media selling them. but once they land in Africa, they want to stay, because of the opportunity they find there, People love them, they get jobs easily etc...
We have to establish communications systems between the West and Africa, otherwise, we are moving in the loop.
Hmmm. The internet these days makes that communication better. As long as you are not in a country where there is sensorship, individual creators like me bring you the truth about whatever information you are looking for. @@ThisSideOfLifeWisdom true what u say. I support you and we want videos like these for our people... but to some extend people in Africa still dont proccess it the way we prcess reality in the West. How many times we talk to our people that, money is in Africa and not in America or Europe, U remember the famous question they ask you, right? why you are not coming back. Not only that, U can give them the base(that money that they are looking for) to start with, but no. They still want to come and burn the money you gave them.
Being from Sweden, I was invited to Ghana by a swedish-ghanaian. It was quite scared and put off the trip first by a year entierly do to media reporting and rumors of Africa being dangerous. Then I decided, let's do it and the fears were not real. I arrived and had this strange but nice feeling of being home. This was not the expected feeling of being in a new country and continent.
Sure there are challenges and many are not rich by material standards of the west but people are friendly and happy. There was no rat-race, no stress. People do not worry even though life can be tough. Work as hard as you can, put your faith in God and tomorrow is another day they will tell me. I lived like that for a week and it de-stressed me. I have been back 8 times since then.
Which job are you talking about. 90 present of Nigerian citizens are jobless. So many of our youths are engaged in evil practices because there's no job after graduation.

It sickens me🤮 I can't even relate the difference in my life in just a few yrs I have lived abroad, it's like night and day. I don't miss Nigeria in any way, I just miss my loved ones and that's it.
It's so easy to grow and be part of the the community and system over here. Life is just beautiful!!! Where I live in the US you can get every african food you can think of(Its cheap in my opinion), there is even a buka/restaurant where u can buy Nigerian street-like food.
It might be stressful to get settled at first, but it's easier if you have someone to help you ease in...this is really important!
Don't be deceived folks! If you have the opportunity to relocate to any nation of your choice, I can assure you that you can grow exponentially career wise and otherwise.
As long as you're not slothful, the heavens is your limit!!!!!!!!!

I left Canada after graduated from one of the top 2-year-full-time MBA program. And with 20 years working experience, I could not find a decent job in Canada because they told me I have no "Canadian" experience. In reality, Canada simply has not enough high quality job. I was recruited in 2010 by an international company to be stationed in Nigeria. Nigeria has good farm land, energy in the form of oil and people. I believe Nigeria has a bright future if the government invested more in education and infrastructure.

Harry that is a misleading statement. I have lived in canada for 4 years and I have seen a lot of Nigerians doing high quality jobs, doing very well. Several recruiters reach out to me on LinkedIn and I am saying no to several opportunities because I am happy where I am. The truth is, canada is not for everyone. Living here requires you to be forward thinking and be determined and hard working. Nigeria is where anything goes, favouritism at work even when you know nothing, that doesn’t work here. @@chinyereubani7075 I feel happy for you. Everyone is seeking for one's own destiny. For me and over 90% of my friends and classmates, who have left Canada, are keeping only the passport after declaring non-residence. I think in Canada, to find a job and living an ordinary but boring life is not so difficult when you are young and do not need good medical service. If you want to work hard and develop your own future, Canada would provide little chance for new comers. Of course there will be always some lucky guys. I used to get service from a guy who was repairing locks, roof leaks, gardening etc. He is the richest guy I knew because he provided options for charging his service with and without the GST. By doing so, he got a lot of business and do not pay tax properly. I don't want to do that myself.

I quite like your video, i'm similar to our aunty here and and i have lived in the UK just as long, i see some of these Nigerian youtubers saying all these things at times and it makes them sound entitled in some way. After all the hassle for you to finally leave Nigeria (we all know it's not easy) some people now get here and start bad mouthing things. Of course there are bills, how else do you think they take care of their country, there is a reason why these western countries are "functional" and ours has issues hence why everyone is trying to get out in the first place.
It is just another country it is not Heaven hence it has it's downsides and as ethnic folks we all have to deal with adaptability issues such as making friends, racism and all sorts. It's not for everyone, if you can't handle it then best go back home.
True, there's no place like home, no person really wants to ever leave their home unless forced to by economic issues but i have to say, i accomplished a lot personally while here, my last years in Nigeria were very hard and full of personal problems most i dont like to remember. We can only hope it gets better someday.
Anyway this is just my experience and my reality, many people are home and doing just fine so it's whatever works for you.

Good points raised. I listened to lots of these videos about Canada being difficult with a whole lot of reasons. I wanted to make a video about that too. Everywhere in the world is difficult. We definitely have to pay bills anywhere we live. Exactly my thoughts. You can make the food yourself too. A lot of adjustments to make but it's part of re-locating to another country.

When I look at those bloggers, about how great is London, America, Canada, I have seen some Nigerian working as Nurse for 40 years, still working, then I said, when are going to stop with Working, we have pay mortgage, mortgage for 30 years, there nothing like staying home, when you get right, having lives both in Holland, and US. Everything is absolutely illusion of freedom, this systematic Slavery, you work to pay Bank, Cooperation. I hope the next generation will not make mistakes, my generation made for leaving home, in early nineties. Still picking up the pieces. I lost 3 friends to chronic Stress, traveling is luck, some People made it, some struggling, Some died. If my People didn't mess up my plan, for having trust in them, to build a house, by now I would have move to my village, starting green house farming.

The deliberate stress is a killer, so forget looking at their hospitals thinking you will get more life when need be.
Americans, Canadians, Europeans don't migrate to anywhere. They live in their already planned and structured country devoid of surprises or uncertainties.
To avoid all these however, vote for a new Nigeria and stop the migration. Vote for a man that can turn around Nigeria to prosperity and stop the migration. Be wise and be properly guided to secure your future and that of the younger generation.
I recently met a university course mate of about 16years. He told me what he went through in Nigeria for 10years. He could not do anything with his certificate.
He was able to escape to Canada 6years ago and he is doing fantastically well here in Canada.
He said he weeps anytime he remember how he suffered for 10years in Nigeria.
The truth is, not everyone will make it in Nigeria and migration is jot for everyone. Be sure of where you stand.

Well said. As someone that lived in the UK and currently living in Canada, adaption has been key.
Residing abroad is NOT for everyone. If you're not a person who can adapt, just stay back home and try to make it there because frankly you'll be frustrated. I had a friend who was a superstar in Nigeria but came to Canada and no one cared because his local stardom didn't resonate in Canada and he was so frustrated. I can't accommodate frustrated and complaining Nigerians abroad. I avoid them because nobody has time for that. If you're not a person who can adapt pleaseee do not come to look for people to cry to, stay back home and enjoy your life there.

This is really the most enlightened and objective video I have seen on this topic. Incidentally, I almost didn’t watch it because of the title. I thought it was one of those rubbish versions (pardon my French). I don’t live in Canada but I visit my children often and I don’t understand why people want to come and transport the inefficiencies of the countries they left into the one they fled to.

First time here and I got attacted by the title. Apart from the loneliness side of things I agree with every other thing you have analyzed. However in terms of loneliness I can beat my chest it hits both single and even married couples with kids. The solution you have provided obviously does not work mainly because our interest is totally different from theirs. I know it was just one out of many things one can engage in but like I said we have different interest completely. Someone like me I do not like sports, I do not like clubbing, I do not like going to the pub, voluntary work is not my passion etc. You know our kind of vibe back in Africa/Nigeria. Another thing is due to the weather and I will repeat the weather is a killer which limits our mobility. I was born in the Uk but obviously raised in Nigeria and came back to the UK at the age of 23 till today I still have not gotten use to the weather and lifestyle. I am greateful to God I have achieved all my dreams but that's another area after being there and done it all there are limitations. I am at that stage now where I believe much can be done and achieved is back in my own country, having sorted the needful out there, you can live the best life more than you can in the West and this is what has come as a shock to so many because their expectations have been so high levelling it up with the standard of the high and mighty in Nigeria which obviously one can fit in to after accomplishing ones dreams here. I have once moved back to Nigeria with my son and stayed for 10 good years due to all the obvious reasons stated high cost of living, paying excessive amount to child minder, etc. I had to come back after secondary to support him through university and I must say it was the best of my 10 years on earth, coming back to the UK got me so depressed and finally my long term goal is to retire back there by Gods grace. There is definely no place like home, people live there and will continue to live there. My advise has always been it's ok to japa if you want to but don't loose focus after a while your eyes will open and you will find out that these countries are not paradise it just a little bit better than African countries.

It's the prayer of everyone that Nigeria will be okay as many people still want to go back after taking care of their lives. My fear is the way evils are spreading back home unchecked. The case of a man that spent 26 years in US who later came home to start an hotel biz at Ogbomosho, only to be kidnapped and killed is still fresh in our minds. If course, people are living in Nigeria and will continue to live but, of what use is living in stress, fear of unknown? Before I left home in 2012, I was visited by Armed-Robbers five times in the middle of the night. I am sure, that time was still better than what's happening presently. The question we need to ask ourselves is this: " why are investors not coming like before?"

@@ThisSideOfLifeWisdom Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from my observations, I've seen that a lot of immigrants that go to Canada are first time immigrants. Like you've mentioned in your video, a lot of the complaints like having to pay bills, looking for jobs, and being expensive are a constant anywhere you are in the world. You will have to work hard (and in most cases, harder than locals) as an immigrant regardless of whether you're in the USA, Australia, UK, or Canada. I have been an immigrant myself for almost 22 years in countries back home in Africa and the USA, Australia. I can say this with certainty.

Appraising your unique position in Nigeria and the advantages it poses you as against the country you're leaving to is very very important. You need to look at both thoroughly, and unfortunately a lot of people aren't able to do the second part, they know very little about the day to day of living in the place where they're going. They just assume it's better than Nigeria because to a lot of people that's a given, but in truth it's not. Great video to bring this to light !

I really do not know what to add here. You explained the situation so well. Presently, I relocated to Nigeria from the UK (England) and just like you explained it is not all roses anywhere. Planning, adaptability and patience would go a long way if you would like to succeed no matter where you are.

My first impression of the Londoners....they appeared weird, no talking, no greetings, hiding behind their newspapers....everybody was just minding their business.....all you could hear was the sound of their shoes on the pavement on their way to work....but Nigeria is not so.....The Nigeria i just left behind was a loud place.....hawkers, greetings from people, cars blaring etc...

I cannot imagine how difficult the adjustment must be for other cultures when coming here to Canada. I immigrated here from the UK in the mid sixties and six weeks later we wanted to go home as well. We eventually adjusted - and we were culturally very similar! We found housing, clothing and food much more expensive. and of poorer quality. We found the education inferior. We were used to free medication on demand. The weather was a shock: The cold in winter was awful (still is after fifty plus years) and the summers intensely hot. We were quite reserved in our home country and found there was a lot more rudeness and aggressiveness, poorer manners than we were used to. University was free to anyone qualified in the UK, not so here. There was a lot more opportunity in Canada; the country was multicultural and vibrant. The wages were better. We adjusted, we more easily than our parents. Like many immigrants we missed the quality of the food we were used to but we adjusted and learned new recipes and came to enjoy Canadian foods. This advice Diekola has given here is excellent. After several months none of us wanted to return home and came to appreciate just what a wonderful country Canada is.

I find it interesting that some Canadian companies/people (Canadians) are fascinated with international food.
I am from the Caribbean so I know that some foods are in high demand throughout Canada and not only with Caribbean people.
Secondly, immigrants don't be afraid of trying to start your own business. It's hard in the first couple years but worth it after a couple years. I also recommend to start freelancing while working at your other job then go into it fully when it grows.

Your video reminds me of my time in 2014 when I landed as a permanent resident in Australia, and was searching for work to survive then. As someone with Canadian qualifications, these were not recognised in Australia and the prospect of needing to study again or settle for really menial jobs was real then. I returned to Singapore, and am still looking into going back to Canada. There is really no perfect city or country, and it is what opens for you to allow you to flourish. A friend now in Australia, who is also a former Singaporean turned Canadian citizen, had told me that the Singaporeans who immigrated to Canada in Vancouver actually often end up complaining so much that I would be surprised at the way they behave, especially considering that many do immigrate to Canada for the benefits and opportunities they could not find in Singapore. I don't believe in the glass ceiling belief that many Asian and African immigrants to western countries claim applies to them as non-whites. Canadians are actually a very diverse and inclusive lot compared to many societies, and compared to decades ago, it has opened up so much more than any other society.

Thank you for sharing your insights and story in this video. For me, My parents decided to move our family to Canada when I was 15. I had a very difficult time transitioning to Canadian high school since the culture I grew up in in the Philippines was very different. People were more conservative where I was from and having to readjust my mindset as an already confused teenager was very unnerving. Even when I went to college it was very hard for me to make friends in the end. I move back to Asia in my 20s because I believe that I aligned more with my peers in Asia I moved to Tokyo and made friends, and tried to establish my life in Japan, however in the end there was always something missing and that was my family. Now that I’m in my 30s, I decided to move back to Canada because I want my children to grow up with their grandparents. Also, I realize that the things I had in Canada, like nature and more open spaces are what I crave now as an adult, I also find that food in Vancouver is more high-quality and the general quality of life and opportunities are better in Canada. I wasn’t able to appreciate these things when I was younger but now that I have more responsibilities, I now understand that life will be more comfortable in Vancouver, sometimes I wish I didn’t leave so that I would have establish more roots but I learned what I had to learn going through what I did.

In my opinion, Canada is a better place to raise a family for immigrants. In USA, there are towns that are mostly black because white people who have economic means moved out. For these towns, their schools are underfunded and students don't perform as well compared to those schools in affluent suburbs.

First time here. The title caught my eye and i couldn't resist adding a comment cos i have first had experience on it. I migrated to the US in 2018 and it was one of the best decisions i have ever made in my life. I didn't know what to expect but i was ready to rough it out. I went alone first b4 my family joined me and i kind of laid the ground for their soft landing. They didn't go through what i did.Trust me it was tough but it depends on the support system u may or may not have. For me i had none so it was not easy. Some people have some support when they arrive and things are not as hard for them so it varies. But then if u stay focused and make the right choices the suffering may not last long. I got legalized the following year i came because i focused on trying to get my papers in time but some people choose to wait for years b4 they do and that's where they suffer more. Nigeria is sweet when u have the funding to live there. Also its unfortunate that nothing is guaranteed over there cos u might have money today but the next year things can go south and its usually very difficult to bounce back unlike in the US things are stable. As much as i live in US now, i don't plan to die here. I will go home eventually but would still have one foot in US to come and go as i please. I'm glad i have turned the destiny of my future generation around. Yes it gets lonely here but that was when i first got here. Now i am not lonely, i tell people always create your fun. Also it depends on the area where u live. For me i CANNOT live in a white neighborhood where i am the only black person. Definitely u will be lonely in such a place. So if loneliness is the problem, please relocate to an area where there's a colony of Nigerians, we have them a lot here in different states. Make sensible friends and u will be fine. When my hubby first came he was miserable. He longed to go back but now his language has changed because things have gotten better for him and he has created his own fun. Now he would rather go home for a bit and return back to US as many times as he chooses to which i think is the ideal scenario. The only thing i don't like is the cold other than that I'm happy. If u are the lazy type pls stay back cos no work no pay here o. Nothing comes easy. We are used to not paying for a lot of things back home because the basic amenities in nigeria do not work but in advanced countries they work so u will have to pay for them. Its not free. Its only lazy people that come abroad and complain where they have people to boss around and do things for them as against doing it urself. Its not easy but its not the worst situation like people make it seem.

So overall, I am getting a 24 min lecture over whether you can adapt or you cannot adapt. I was looking at the current problems already in Canada, which is making people leave Canada for their home countries like the crazy inflation rates, tax rates, expensive school fees and daycare, not to mention also poor or pathetic healthcare system in Canada. Also, not to forget, the rising Covid19 situation in Canada is another cause of concern. Besides that, the racial discrimination factor in job recruitments, dont forget. A person with extensive research / work experience, as a PhD professor is forced to do menial odd-jobs to survive. Please talk about what professions, Canada actually needs and what are the payscales. Like they need mostly are truck drivers, doctors and nurses mostly now.

Thanks for this video. Just as you said, migration is not for everyone. I never had the intention of leaving Nigeria until 2years ago because I was doing relatively well in Nigeria. When, i was sure relocating was my next move, I started the process last year and I got my PR within a year.
I got to Canada 24th September, having prepared my mind for whatever will happen. Though, was already putting in place things that will make me transition quickly.
Within 2 months, I got a good job in my field and everyone were like how did you do it. How do you get to Canada on Sept 24 and start work 28th Nov in your preferred field. Well, my conclusion is "God is involved".
I have to say this, before taking the migration step, be sure it's what you should do and please, do it legally. I see that there are no shortcuts here in Canada
