This story brought me to tears. I'm a die-hard Biles fan, but now I'm rooting just as hard for Suni. I had no idea that such an ordeal her family was living, and yet, she manages to have the current, hardest uneven bars routine there is.
@@JanitaShowaars I see her doing great, now, as good as Biles, though, that I can't say. I mean, my grandparents witnessed Comaneci, now, I strongly believe that with Biles we are witnessing a legend unfolding itself right in front our eyes. Even if Biles retires right now, her legacy for gymnastics is written in gold for ever. Suni is amazing, but not on a history-making level like Biles.
Sara you got it wrong. The reason Suni could performed the way she did is because the loving support from her parents and Hmong community. Not the pressure you thought she must have under. In fact she said she drew inspiration from all these adversity which also makes her stronger.
I taught Hmong refugees, young and old, in a refugee camp in Thailand during the early 1990's and found Hmong students to be among my most favorites. During 2000's I met a bright doctoral Hmong student in the same class at IU School of Education. And now, a Hmong Olympic Gold medalist! Wow! How amazing!
I couldn’t hold back the tears from filling up my eyes. She has so much strength to carry this load while balancing school, Olympic training and helping to look after her siblings while Mom checks on Dad. Sunisa you got this, I’m going to be cheering you on every step of the way.
Life can be so unfair no ironically cruel… she excels at a sport that involves every muscle and unfortunately her father is able to use his arms. Hopefully they’re both doing okay
I feel so sad for John I shed a tear at how supportive he is of Suni even in a bad condition. Every kid needs that kind of love and support from their parent.

Nobody said that immigrants are not Americans. Do not dare conflate the Hmong's LEGAL entrance into America with those who are coming here illegally. As a Hmong-American, I take great offense when people, especially those on the political left, suggest that illegals and I hold the same status.
I cried when Suni won gold! This is a win for her and her family . The hardships they faced and hours they spent away from each other. I’m a sad Mr. Lee wasn’t able to watch Suni win live. This is also a win for the Hmong and Asian American community. Especially with the racism and hardships Asian Americans have faced this really brings tears to my eyes. You go Suni! So Proud!
We're living in the world where media constantly tries to redefine what bravery is, but we all know what being brave looks like when we see it. That is one tough girl and a BRAVE Olympian! Congratulations!
Congratulations, Sunisa Lee, I have followed your touching journey for such a long time. Couldn’t be more well deserved - you did it, you are the All Around Olympic Champion!! Biggest congratulations 💛
She is such an incredible girl. I can’t wait for the entire country (and world) to meet this amazing talent & see all she is capable of. You got this, Suni! Your dreams are all coming true.
RUclips algorithm brought me here after tonight’s delightful and historical gold medal. Who would have thought all this and add a no quit attitude. Simply amazing.
Her dad, Sha'carri's mom, Yul's old coach who just had a stroke...respect for these young folks who are pushing through both physical and emotional hardship.
There are many good hmong men who are supportive and loving fathers and husbands. So many unsung heros. We are still here and we will continue to do what we do for our families despite what others may think or say. We don't need to prove or "change" for anyone bc we are busy living our lives and supporting and sacrificing for our children's dreams.
I was seriously unwell last year, and spent three weeks in intensive care. My companions throughout were two older men who had fallen off ladders while trimming trees. Please people be careful.
omg... her dad has the sweetest countenance even after what he went through. i wish ALL the luck & blessings for Suni! it doesn't matter what medal she gets because she has already been blessed w/ GOLD w/ such a loving, caring family!!
Jeez and I see this after Suni and TEAM USA won Gold at the OLYMPICs in PARIS. Bless her. She is so strong, and having to deal with kidney issues too. Wow. I had no Idea about her Dad til now.
I didn’t know about this but just read in passing that she had problems. Made me cry. It’s funny how you can get inspiration from people who are not in the same field as yours. ❤😢
What a true inspirational story about love, dedication and sacrifices! So touched by her dad’s unconditional love for Sunisa: “whether you win first or not, you’re still number one in my book.”
I became a fan of hers once I heard her story and saw her perform. The media has concentrated so much on Biles, that they've totally ignored the rest of the team that are just as good. In this case a lot better!!!
It’s surreal seeing this interview now from 1 year ago before anticipated 2020 Olympics and her dad saying he will crawl to Tokyo and to only have Covid stop everything. Even for 2021 her family not allowed to travel. Perhaps a blessing in disguise. He’s a Navy veteran also. This is the side of America we should all be proud of. Too many play victim mentality. This family just toughs it out. Hmong Americans should be proud. 👍
What a strong brave young women! To keep it together knowing her father was suffering. Absolute champion spirit! Prayers & godspeed to her at the Tokyo Olympics & her father!
She just won gold in the women’s all around. So happy for her
Just seen it
@D Legionnaire 🥲
@D Legionnaire and go go go

Andrade deserve that, not Suni.
True tear-jerker. He said he'd crawl to Tokyo for his daughter... that finished me.

and now his daughter took home the gold medal from tokyo!
I wish so badly he could’ve been there to see her win gold in person 😭😭😭😭

Your prophecy came true. She is a strong indeed!
Hey I've an important exam next month, how do you think I'll do?
This brought me to tears, a loving Dad and a daughter who treasures her Dad, old values common amongst Asians.
True values never get old
Not only does Suni make it to Tokyo, she’ll be bringing home the gold! What a truly remarkable young woman and beautiful family.
