"White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)" is a song by Melle Mel, released as a 12" in 1983 on Sugar Hill Records. The song, which warns against the dangers of cocaine, addiction, and drug smuggling, is one of Melle Mel's signature tracks. The bassline is taken from a performance of the Sugar Hill house band (featuring bassist Doug Wimbish) covering "Cavern", a single by New York City band Liquid Liquid.

Takes me back to high school. Free base was the precursor to crack. Richard Pryor set himself on fire free basing in 1980. The bass line is sampled from "Cavern" by Liquid Liquid. I don't know about the background vocals. Check out Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five "The Message" from 1982 when you can. "Don't push me 'cause I'm close to the edge!"

This is not an old school rap song, this is hip hop with rock! and real instruments, no auto-tune and real singing and also telling a story, this masterpiece song has all that, plus a... grove... that is killer

This song is dope (no pun intended). The line Something like a phenomenon was "borrowed" by LL Cool J for his song Phenomenon. Duran Duran did a cover version of White Lines in 1995. The original song is used prominently in the movie Shaun of the Dead. So yeah, lots of pop culture with White Lines. Thanks for the awesome reaction.

This was such a "party" track in more ways than one.... So popular to groove to at dance clubs back in the "bad ol' days" where, yes, pretty much everybody was on "something!" This song was also a testament to the harsh realities of the crack epidemic that afflicted too many of our black and brown brothers and sisters, and saw a disproportionate number of poor blacks given 20, 30 year prison sentences for Crack cocaine drug offenses, while white middle and upperclass people were given a comparative slap on the wrist for similar cocaine (drug) offenses! Definately a feel good cautionary tale fire bop! Thanks for the Awesome reaction!
There was a lot more murder and violence involved with the crack trade than white middle and upperclass cocaine users. Drug laws were made much more harsh for everyone after the 80s.
@@TubeScavenger Thats a good point, but it also has to be realized that there were social, political & cultural factors that weighed highly against impoverished people of the Inner City who fell victim of a more potent form of the drug that was more addictive and a much cheaper form of the drug that plagued poor people who didnt have the financial and educational opportunities that rich white kids and young adults from the subburbs had! A casual drug user in the inner city was given a devistatingly harsher sentence for minor drug offenses, versus much lesser sentenses that the casual white user who was arrested for a different form of the same drug received. The playing field and the scales of justice were not equal!

This song is liquid fire!
I was about to write that’s this song came out before samples were thing so it couldn’t be … but then I stopped and actually looked it up. Turns out that the baseline in this song (which is famous as hell!) is actually a sample from another song that came out a few months earlier in 1983 before they recorded this.
The song they sampled is called Cavern by the “punk-dance” band Liquid Liquid.
One. Never heard of them or their song.

The video is so old it’s hard not to be distracted by how different the city looks and the fashions are, the song is something everyone should hear.
PLUS: Ice Cube sampled the entire musical score from The Message in his 1993 hit song Check Yo Self.
By the time the 90s came around they weren’t sampling just little pieces or parts of songs they were sampling the whole damn thing. (Think Michael McDonald and Warren G)

This song is a Masterpiece.. They didn't have anything to Sample back then or the technology.. They were the Originals!! I love this song and go into Flash Back mode involuntarily!! I grew up in Hollywood and this song definately encouraged us to party more!!

When this song was playing on the radio when I was growing up as a late adolescent/pre teenager I didn't know what this song meant. I learned what it meant much later as I got older.

white lines copied the rhythm track and melodies of Liquid Liquid Cavern which a post punk underground song from nyc in the late 70's early 80's..liquid liquids label known as 99 records sued sugar hill the label who released white lines..., Sugar hill label boss ,sylvia robinson responded by sending some thugs round to threaten the 99 label boss ,but eventually ended up with a court settlement with 99 records for the sum of 600,000 dollars..which sugar hill did not pay because they filed for bankruptcy..this one episode forced the closure of 99 records, and was the catalyst for the demise of sylvia robinsons sugar hill records. .2 epic records with a dark history....
