- The gang is back from shooting gel out to 900 yards. Now it’s time to talk about their custom .300 WSM built entirely around the Barnes 212 grain LRX Bore Rider bullet. This project starts and ends with a bullet matched with a case and premium components, creating a perfect storm of long-range terminal performance. Is this the ultimate long range hunting rifle? Listen and decide for yourself.

10 Likes and Ryan has to build a 7 Rem Mag to outperform the .300 SWSM.
That would be an easy task.
Naaaa 300wsm swsm all the way jk 7mm is good round love the 7mm wsm
Na ask to him build a 7 mm weatherby mag sense he thinks it’s the same as a 7 rem mag lol
@rubenvasquez021 they don't have a 7mm bullets built like this though. It's not the cartridge or rifle that makes this so amazing. It's simply the bullet with a rifle custom built to properly shoot the bullet. The reason the 300 wsm is a good host for it is because it has the powder capacity to push the heavy bullet at a "high" speed and the 300 wsm is still a short action chambering, so you can step up to a long action instead of taking a long action and having to step up to a magnum action (like if you used a 300 WM)
28 NOSLER. Cough cough
If this gets 10 likes Mark has to get a suppressor and Jimmy has to get a 300 WSM😁
Hands down, the best firearm related podcast out there.
Others may be informative, but none have quite the same charisma and entertaining personalities with good chemistry together.
I'm thoroughly convinced Mark and Ryan talking about the .300 WSM over the last 5 years has single handedly raised the WSM's popularity.
Has nothing to do with Lapua now making brass for the wsm and f-class braking records with the wsm
Remi Warren talks about it a lot as the perfect big game cartridge too.
@Honkers716 you're right that Probably didn't do too much to help, just Mark constantly mentioning it during every cartridge talk 😂 I kid, it's nice to see the popularity going up and the cartridge surviving on its own merit.
@AussieInCA11 it's nice to see the popularity catching up to it's performance. I've wanted to buy a WSM for years for but thr factory ammo options just weren't there yet. But now, they're cranking out ammo with enough options to make me a believer
They talked me into one. Then I bought another. Then, I sold both and bought a 6.5PRC because a 6.5 WSM or 6.5 SAUM was out of my reach price wise.
Mark is right, you guys have the cartridge talks throughout the year, but Ryan's right in spirit - there definitely are not enough cartridge talks throughout the year. I did a little poking around on your channel and from what I'm seeing it looks like (on average) the cartridge talks get (generally) higher views than any other category of content you post. Give the people what they want Boardman!
Nah, the cartridge talks are a finite resource gotta ration them.
I love how the regular podcast was 28 minutes and the 10 minute talk is over an hour 😂
Wait a minute comma Can you take a Tikka T3x 300 WSM and just load the bullets longer in the case because all t3x a long action?❤🎉
So with that bullet would it be possible to load it in a 30 Nosler, but use a 300 RUM action.
@@MichaelSmith-gz9nv only if the nosler has a 1:8 twist barrel.
I am obsessed with cartridge designs and the 300 WSM is one of the best if not the best! I hope to see more 300 WSM videos.
been loving mine and loading for it since 2006.
These cartridge talks are my absolute favorite! Love Ryans knowledge of cartridges old and new...and you guys ask great questions
Yup Ryan is great the other two may as well be talking about dandy lions.
New 68 minute talk episode pops up. I'm in!
A 300 wsm, Christmas episode is a Christmas miracle for Mark.
Yes. I was already looking into a 300wsm. Now i want that 300 swsm
G’Day from Australia. Love these shows and Mark has almost convinced me I need a 300 wissum. Then on the other hand Ryan has got me over the line on a lever gun in 45-70. Why do you guys do this to us!! Love the show, keep it up!
Funny thing, I built a 300 WSM on a Remington LA action first thing I harvested was an elk. This was three years ago. Guess what it's back to the loading blocks for me and a whole new tour down the hunting road for perfection....Thanks guys love your stuff keep it coming and don't forget the outside research and information from other companies....Great Job!!!
I’ve waited all year for the holiday cartridge talks👍😁
Listening to you guys talk is music to my ears..loved the Merry Christmas thrown in at the end!😁
300 WSM sales are about to pick up!
yeah,, this hunting season ,I meet lots of long range hunters with 100 yard shooting skills,,
This was the longest ten minutes of my life
Therapy always does😳😱🤣
Kids always hate learning!!😂😂
It’s more of a guideline than actual rule 😏
With Bergara's new modular offering this will be really easy for anyone to build. Awesome!
“Imagine if you stunned it and woke up on the operating table”. Gold.
I agree with Ryan, love the cartridge talks. More often would be great.
Would love to see some pictures of groups at 1,3, and 500 yards
THIS👆🏻
Building my super wsm now. Bartlein 8 twist just arrived. Thanks guys. Excited for this build
THANK YOU, Mark and Ryan! I was having a hard time moving my scope throw and learned that i had my scope rings too close to it, and it was causing issues! 🎉 great info
The 300 WSM Boardman
Great idea!!
Boardman?
Yo mark your introduction to the pods are epic
The 300SWSM sounds like a plan!
I considered doing this last year! I'm so glad you guys made this video. It was cool to see how that bore rider does on jell.
We’ve been doing this with Tikkas for 20 years 😁
Tell me more about this
@@hoponpop7097all tikkas are long actions. They just put in a bolt stop
Imo the only company that gets it right. 👍🏻
@@hoponpop7097 All Tikka actions are long actions. Buy a Tikka in 300 WSM, swap out the SA mag for a LA mag and modify the SA bolt stop or buy a LA bolt stop and there ya go.
@@tyrelsimpson152 yeah, I don’t know that the action would accommodate the COAL even in long form. You can get aftermarket mags and bottom metal, but I think the ejection port is still too short
Yes,you have peaked my interest,I think I want to try this, eventhough I've never shot looong range,I do like the fact that you can load a heavier bullet into that case, and that the bullet performs so well.I use to shoot 200gr bullets out of a 300 Win Mag years ago,and fully appreciate what the heavier 30s can do,but always stopped short of buying a WSM because of its limits in factory form. This opens up a new dimension to this round and I can appreciate it.The long action doesn't bother me,so it seems like a cool project to do.
If I wasn't working on load development for two different cartridges, I could see this being inspiration to build a 7 super saum! 😂
Every time they get excited about a cartridge or bullet like this it makes me want to buy a new gun 😂😭
A 6-6.5 PRC or 300WSM are both on my list
Love cartridge talk !!🎉🎉 learn so much from these segments!! Plz keep it going!!👍🇺🇸make America great again!!
Get out of my walls!!! I have been tossing this concept around in my head for a long while now. I currently own a long action with a 3.850 cip length magazine. I havnt been looking at barnes bullets but cuttingedgebullets. Same concept however. Kept telling myself I would start this concept/project after my current barrel is toast. Glad to see you guys have made it happen though. Hopefully this concept catches on for more bullet manufactures as for the handloader this has very real potential. My idea has revolved around a 300 PRC or a 300 norma with cuttingedgebullets 220-240 grain "single feed" bullets. High bc very long bullets able to be ran out of a magazine (albeit cip length) sounds like a match made in heaven. Excellent work as always, great content!
That bullet is designed like an artillery shell as they have driving bands of a type cool idea though very enjoyable podcast cast guys well done 👏
I had a 300 SAUM Sendero shooting 210 Bergers at 2880fps. Loaded with same idea. It was a single shot bolt gun that hammered piles of deer and hogs out to 550yards. I had the wrong wind hold on a coyote at 705 yards. I love seeing this concept on mainstream “media” proving out the concept. I had not heard of this Barnes bore rider bullet before. I’m going to have to reprioritize my next gun now….
I started playing with these bullets in my 300 NMI. They are really impressive so far. 1/2 moa 5 shot groups
The 50 BMG I loaded years ago with Barns Brass Boar Rider were built for 1,000 yard Hog kill from a helicopter, preformed amazingly!!!
I’d be interested in hearing y’all talk about twist rate’s effect on bullet expansion. I saw a fella on YT shooting 77tmk’s through a 12.5” 1:5 barrel and it seemed the bullets opened up more versus a 1:7 of same barrel length.
Love the content, kept be entertained and educated me for several years now.
Yes please! Is he interested to see this bullet with a super high twist rate like 1:6 and measure expansion at long distance.
Twist rate does have an effect on expansion. The twist adds torque to the bullet as it impacts, causing the bullet to tear apart more
Tikka roughtech 300wsm. Its far exceeded my expectations for accuracy. 178eldx 10 shot groups around 5/8in. Awsome caliber. It likes so many combos, 208 eldms, 190 bergers.
My first thought was these loaded into a 308 case in a long action, but i also jumped to the idea of loading subsonic which would entirely defeat the purpose of more case capacity.
Still, a proper velocity 308 load would be neat.
Mark should sing an intro into every episode
@37:00 you I think started talking about my question. Why doesn't Barnes have a 7mm bore rider LRX? Is the 30cal 212gr the optimum?
Yes I would love to have one 😎. Barns LR I use exclusively 😊
What magazine is used?
Sounds like a good way to turn the 300wsm into a good Alaskan Grizz rifle
About time!😮😊😅
Somehow, Mark got his wish and ya’ll are doing another cartridge talk on 300 Dubya S M. (Sorry boys as a fellow Wisconsinite living in Texas I’ve been converted 😉)
Ahh 😄10 likes.. love that Mark gets a suppressor!!!
Could you make a Super 308 win? I mean if your gonna try the 300 BLK. Use a 30-06 action with MDT chassis and mags. Seems like the measurements would fit?
Could the bore rider long short action be applied to the 270WSM for a 270 Super WSM? Say with a 1:7 twist? Would the results be similar? Love my WSMs.
This might be your best podcast ever. The unconventional bullet for a short action cartridge was great. G1 of 0.7? Wow! That part was really interesting. However, Mark’s idea to put 1” of water in front of the ballistic gel at 800 yards was genius. Keep in mind that their initial test went clean through 10 feet of gel with zero expansion. The next step is to ask that all GunTubers put an inch of water in front of their ballistic gel blocks, especially at shorter ranges.
Well done gentlemen!
P.S. Jimmy asked a great question - what other cartridges? I’m still mad at Hornady for torpedoing the SAAMI application for 8.6 Blackout, but what about 338 ARC? It’s a mini action cartridge but you’ve got a considerably bigger diameter case and therefore powder column than 300 Blackout. Figure out a bullet like this that just fits in a short action rifle (2.8” COAL) that you can drive to 1,175 fps. (338 ARC only interests me for subsonics) It wouldn’t work in an AR-15 but a bolt action???
10Minute Talk. Running time: 1:08:12
Would be cool to have done this in a tikka action, an off the shelf gun that could potentially be capable of exploiting this bullet. I already own a 300 wsm, now I need another one!
This is the most non-wildcat, wildcat cartridge ever made.
Imagine going back in time and telling your grandfathers that you've discussed this cartridge before the .300 savage.
Now imagine their disappointment.
Time for a cartridge talk on the Weatherby 338 RPM - the best hunting cartridge ever!
Now imagine a 7mm bore rider in a 7 saum or 7 wsm 🤔
I’d like to see a version of this in 7 wsm. Maybe a .284, 190 grain Bore Rider?
Thank you for the excellent podcast.
I had already decided to get a 300WSM for elk/moose. but now I’m definitely getting it customed for this
Thank you again
I'm in no direct rush to build a rifle as my 6.5CM helped me harvest my first mule deer & elk this year, ideally I'd like to step up the caliber by spring bear season with the potential of being in grizz country. I've been stuck between a 7PRC & 300 WSM. This has me thinking and I hope you guys show Ryan's build when he has it done. Love the versatility to shoot those big 212s that had me originally interested in a 300PRC as well as being able to shoot standard loads. Excited to see what new components come out over the next few months and how this SWSM plays out!
If you look at factory chamberings for the 300 WSM right at MidwayUSA, it blows 7 PRC out of the water. That might be a deciding factor for you. And, Tikka makes multiple rifles chambered for the WSM if you're into that sort of thing. You can find a T3X Superlite on sale in 300 WSM for sub $650 online right now.
There is no such thing as a swsm it’s just a shit barnes bullet in a standard cartridge
@kingy300wby Do you prefer the 300 Weatherby and think it's the superior cartridge? Not sure why, but I'm getting that vibe from you. Just a hunch
@@sheahill5250 🤣👍🏼 yeah mate love the 300wby heaps more horsepower than the wsm, I had a wsm years ago,
Love the holliday cartridge talks! But I've been waiting on Ryan to wax poetic about the 375 H&H, 416 Rigby or another safari caliber a year already 😅!
I have been thinking of a 7 WSM to run the new Barnes 160 LRX.
Now you can play with any heavyweight .30 cal bullet and not be restricted by your mag length. This is an awesome build.
Yeah, short action is cool and all but it has some downsides.
But in all honesty, short action rifles just look better in general
Yes, but loading a cartridge longer than Sammi special COAL doesn't call it a different name.lol... u need at least a modified case, which in this case isn't modded......lmfao.. I load my 257wby with heavies, longer than Saami coal, no case mod, I don't try to call it a different name as if it's really a "NEW" cartridge.. lmfao.... Cmon fellas, this is getting too carried away.. This isn't even close to wildcatting either. Even lengthen coal using a new reamer dont make it a New cartridge... Get outta here
@@mryang3644they are clearly joking by calling it the SWSM. 😂 loading long has been a thing sense loading was a thing. But the fact that Barnes came out with a bullet that will load into a Sammi spec chamber but being long overall is a cool feat. No need to nit pick what’s the name of a long overall .300 wsm. It’s just cool that it worked. 😂
This was a cool build around an unconventional bullet. Would be interesting to me to see a bore rider for a 6.8 western or 6.5 prc with a long action build Barnes might be on to something
I would love to hear Ryan’s take on the 400 legend.
You guys discuss the bullet construction. Stating it's versatility from high to low impact velocities. Is this the 212 borerider LRX specifically? Is this across the LRX product line?
Pretty sure it's all LRX. The 212 is by far the highest BC in that line though.
In the two pronghorn you discuss the cause of death, the one you hit in the backstrap that the bullet separated and did not penetrate the diaphragm likely disrupted the abdominal aorta and/or vena cava. Also, likely had transient paralysis due to the spine injury.
The second one likely died of commotio cordis.
Load for the carbon waypoint prc with same 22x lht. Man that rifle is right down my alley. 156s heavy as you can find for 6.5prc so far. I like the 95gr v max screamin deathray. Hard on barrel and I’ve logged every rd and kept the 3600fps ones logged separate too. Over 600rds so far.
Merry Christmas
I think this might be a knock out round for sure.
You can have it both ways these days.
Perfect bullet - Federal terminal ascent .., The issue with the barnes are 0 fragmentation, which I think is a VERY handy tool in DEATH
Build looks light, but it will get smoked by - 300PRC, 300Norma, 300WBY = These guns will push 230 grain pills at 3100 fps.. Thats a large difference from 2850..
Gentlemen, i think we're looking at Hornaday's next PRC chambering
We need a 12 days of Christmas in cartridges. This one should be the .300 Vortex WSM. There, SAAMI spec that.
Not sure of the mechanisms at play but can say a 22 in ar build probably has too much gas and can reliably cycle 2 rounds faster than the ear can hear... Fun stuff.
@8:18 those comments on the bullet reminds me of the GP11 round. The bullet above the case mouth is .704" in diameter then below the case mouth it expands too .706" them transition into a boat tail. Using .308" bullets in the K31 forces you to seat the bullets really, really deep so your not jamming rhe bullet into the rifling.
Lol, " drive me up a wall" is normally used when you're upset about something. Did Ryan just make his own word like irregardless?😂
I was considering a 300 PRC, but if this round sees the light of day as a commercial round-I'm in 100%. Merry Chrysler everyone.
It won’t be commercially available in 300WSM.
Does the Barnes borerider maintain the same free bore in the chamber? Seems like by making the actually driving band shorter it will engage rifling later.
Would a 300 rcm in a long action loaded with the 212 bore rider be equivalent?
I was thinking about a 300rcm, this is the direction that I would go now probably.
I think we should make him modernize an old favorite .270 Super Seven!!!!
I think it’s interesting that you guys are doing this. I think it’s awesome. I think it will be the Barel that I put on my long action Tika. I’m already at 175lrx at 3200. I think it’s interesting that you guys are doing this. I think it’s awesome. I think it will be the barrel that I put on my long action Tika. If I ever change correctly, the only difference between the long action and the action is the bolt catch Please correct me if I’m wrong. Im loading 180 grain bullets from Cutting Edge to a 3.030 COAL. and it shoots great .3 inch groups.
Did Mark get his stocking stuffer suppressor to stalk silently?
Could you load the same LRX bullet in the .308 win, use that cartridge in a long action similar to an M24 setup, and get similar results with 308 vs 30-06 or 300 magnums?
Can you give some insight on load data you used for the 212 ? I tried this bullet and couldn’t get any accuracy. Im shooting the 208 LRX @ 2850 out of a 20” barrel and it just hammers Mule Deer and Elk.
I'm intrigued to say the least! I have a question for you though... If I wanted to build a rifle chambered in 300 WSM using the 212 bore rider and use a 20" barrel, would the 1:8 twist rate suffice or would one need a 1:7 or 1:7.5? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!
What magazine did you use or modify?
300 ss or sst would be a great option for this bullet.
I was thinking about the 6.5 Creedmoor also, but the 6.5 PRC does exactly the same thing, it extends out the bullet to the AICS case length. What Peterson did for you folks was to just use the long magnum action. I think it's cool to use the small cartridge with the longer bullet, very similar to the 8.6 blackout without subsonic. 8.6 blackout with a 210 grain TTSX is pretty deadly on game out to 400. That's long range for me.🙄
PS - Barnes does have a 280 grain LRX in .338 that works for 8.6 blackout subsonic.
Let’s hear about the 25 WSSM
I’ve used one extensively and it’s worked very well. Love how short and handy the rifle is due to that super short action length
53:29 if barnes made a 6.5 diameter bore rider, I feel like it would perform very well out of the 6.5 prc. It's a short action cartridge pushing a regular bullet fairly fast, so if you put it in a long action and did a faster twist rate, I feel like it would perform very well! Could probably also do it with a 22 arc or 22-250 with a faster twist rate. Basically, you have to step up one action length to run this bullet
Howa 6.5 prc is in a long action
I need to build one of these!
Hey mark. How would someone like myself get 1 of these guns built? I want a 300wsm but this sounds even better
How would this perform with lighter bullet weights with that twist rate?
I have been talking about this for years. But with 7mm wsm and 175-190 grain projectiles. Even better would be the SAUM case...
Sounds like a great cartridge. I would like to have seen the accuracy results. In my opinion, accuracy comes before displacement. Makes me wonder why why accuracy wasn't discussed or shown. After all, Ryan has shot more of this cartridge than any of his others. Don't get me wrong, I am very interested in this cartridge since I am required to use lead-free in my state.
Great job guys. Granted, the .358win cannot match the .300swsm, however, your audience is giddy with anticipation on the Cartridge Talk episode featuring it !!! Can't wait !!
jmp
This has been my plan! Rebarrel my 300 win mag to 300wsm when my factory barrel is toast.
🎅 MARK'S CHRISTMAS GIFT - The "Super" wsm (swsm or swim? 🌊 Mark is Treading Water... Swim Mark Swim! 😂)! 🎁
Just because I'm tired of seeing "300PRC" in the comments. All the PRC guys need to go check the barnes load data for both cartridges. In a 26" barrel the listed max in the PRC is only 80fps faster that the listed max for the WSM in a 24" barrel. With equal barrel lengths you're talking* about essentially the same velocity. Only benefit of the PRC is that you don't need to re-barrel to increase twist rate. Ballistic performance is the same.
But it’s really not the same as it. I can push the 230 GR burger and the 225ELDM at nearly 3100 FPS in my 300 PRC. If you’re going to handload for one, then you need to hand load for the other and the WSM doesn’t even come close. I should know I own both of them.
*berger
@@JAWZOZ as mentioned all over this video and the previous, this is specifically about the bullet. This specific bullet is essentially the same out of either the PRC or the WSM.
@ no it wouldn’t be. I’ll push that at near 3200fps out of my 26” 300prc. I love the wsm and this bullet makes it even better if you have one but it’s not even remotely close to a PRC or Norma and I certainly wouldn’t build one just for this one projectile.
@@JAWZOZ more power to you I guess. The data just doesn't show anything anywhere near that. Stay safe man, and good luck 👍
