I really love that you just don't have a theme. I restarted my island as well without any theme, I just build whatever I feel like without the pressure of matching it to something. It is really freeing.
ohhhh, the floating islands are so nice!! maybe you could have a standalone two-tiered floating island between the two shops, with your villager house at the top? it could be accessed using the mario pipe item!
If the area in the middle is accessible, maybe a cafe or storage area would be nice :0 if it isn’t maybe a centerpiece about a lighthouse or something similar? :0

You could do a little pier with some ships down in the empty space, then you could imagine they are delivering goods through the river to nooks and ables :D

I think you should put spiked fencing in the little areas between the jumpy strips to make it seem like if you fall you’ll fall into some spikes, I know a little edgy and morbid but I think it’ll add a pinch of ✨flavor✨
The center space should definitely be some sort of island. I usually gravitate towards ones with rock formations/tablets (or stone henge) but depending on the feel you want, maybe something reminiscent of Rabbit Island? An island with a bunch of wooden ducks, or toy dogs maybe?
Right now, Aug 2023, I'm prepping in readiness for Christmas. Then plan is to place the shops around a single plaza or village green with a single cyprus tree in the middle which will undoubtedly get decorated for Christmas

Random ACNH story lol: so I have the max amount of villagers on my island (10) and one day i got a campsite villager who was… Audie! I easily got her to move on my island but resident services said there isn’t enough room for her house, but then she got news that a villager of mine might want to move out and that villager was… Monty!! He is so ugly (maybe that’s a lil dramatic😅) and I hate his voice so I am so happy!
