To be fair, making Yusuke learn the spirit gun *during* an actual fight wouldn't be much better. He needed at least a tiny amount of practice before putting it to real use.
Important note: Yusuke's mom leveraged her yakuza connections to get Yusuke back in school. Also, those connections are probably where the "whistle for a hundred bad guys with guns" rumor about Yusuke came from.

It really is. The characters are at their strongest when together. I love this show. You finally got through the intro just a bit till the show starts really kicking off

Yeah, Spirit Detective of Earth might as well just be downsized to Spirit Detective of Japan seeing that apparently Demons don’t show up anywhere else. XD

I think Koenma getting Yusuke to use the spirit gun on the teacher makes sense really. Yusuke hadn't used to before, and it was so weak the first time that it was just enough to basically be a punch on a human. It wouldn't have had any practical impact against the demons in this episode anyway, but at least in the future Yusuke can continue to use it and develop it further.
Hiei : The most fearsome demon in anime history. He's the one responsible for the whole CHUUNIBYO phenomenon and create so many toxic edgy characters, such as Sasuke. And he nonchalantly did all those by just being awesome.
There's a lot of "What if..?" in this ep. What if there was no roberry and Yusuke had some time get some in-sight on the S.D. tools? - Guess it was a slow week for the Spirit World to spend resources. What if Yusuke tracked the bad guys and waited until recharged? - Not in his nature, and may not expected to get on their tail so fast. What if Yusuke hadn't interrupter Kurama and Gouki? - There would be 1 less bad guy at most, or 2 weaker.
One thing I'm sad the anime doesn't cover more is stuff involving Yusuke's mom. In the manga she attends the Dark Tournament along with the others, is originally in the role Shizuru covers for her during Chapter Black in the anime, and we also see some interactions between her and Yusuke's dad.
Kurama and Hiei. These two are the gods of fandom and the fanfiction community in that era. You don't know how thousands or even millions of words sailed through this ship. 😂 And how many writers they have birthed worldwide when the Internet was just starting. I bow down to these bishounen gods.

With the thing especially taking children's souls, I think it might relate to something I've heard in other series that seems to be part of Japanese folklore, where children are thought to be like... closer to or more in tune with the spiritual world? It's been many years since I saw it but that was a plot point in an episode of an anime I watched that focused a lot on Japanese folklore.
the dub is messing with my head! i can’t watch dubs normally and the english voices are SO DIFFERENT from the original japanese seiyuu. hearing a manly voice for Kurama instead of Ogata Megumi’s soft alto is a mindfuck lol
@@alexismonetti Kuwabara's dub voice is iconic. also wait until you see a certain old lady and how she's voiced by the first english actress for Frieza (I'm assuming, certainly sounds like the same person) also Hiei's voice may be less deep, but it certainly fits his harsh, meanspirited personality
Finally you meet Hiei and Kurama. Hiei is voiced by Chuck Huber, also known as Android 17. He's fantastic in this role. Perfect casting there just like the others. Kurama definitely has an air of mystery to him. If Yusuke just waited a little longer I'm pretty sure Goki would've been obliterated. Past the thorns huh? Hmmm I'm glad you mentioned how Yusuke is able to take down adults and damage weaker demons at this state. I wonder if he's just naturally strong or if there's something else going on. Koenma is a great boss. He enables Yusuke's behavior but still reigns him in when the situation calls for it. I know the whole dad thing is getting played for laughs but I wouldn't write the king off completely. H sounds pretty extreme. Next week we get a surprisingly emotional journey, but a welcome one at that.
