Kids often hang out in school during the school day because their home life is terrible, they don't want to be home, they don't want to be in class, but they can't be outside of the school without being harassed either. So they're in school, probably with friends, not having cops or anyone called on them, and not having to deal with everything going on at home.

    • @SchoolPrincipalReacts
      @SchoolPrincipalReacts  5 месяцев назад +8

I’ve seen a few cases of this. Unfortunately they end up getting “bothered” by the school at that point because they’re required to be in class.

1:47 That's for the best, the openings and endings tend to be from established artist in the music industry. In other words, very quick way to get a copyright strike from their record labels.
Edit: Since this takes place around the early 90s and/or late 80s, I believe giving disaplinary actions like beating was still allowed in Japan. Also I believe in the manga Yusuke had cigarettes instead of gum, but broadcasting standards don't allow for depictions of underaged smoking. Another important bit they left out is that Yusuke's mother had him at about 13 or 14, and was either implied or explicitly stated that she works as a pr*stitute. So yeah, a much more unstable household than what is shown in the anime.

yeah, this anime is a product of its time. i don't have all the facts, but somewhere around the 1980 to early 1990 there was apparently a real issue with teachers using "discipline" as an excuse to be borderline abusive in their practices in japan, and the type of punk counter culture that developed because of it that urameshi is a part of. after all, if the place that is supposed to educated you treats you like trash and a waste of time, no matter what you do, why even bother going? if you look back, there are actually quite a few manga and anime of the time that tackle the same issue, like GTO (great teacher onizuka) for example. although i don't think that one would be quite your cup of tea. it's pg13+ and pretty horny, especially early on, and focuses more on very unorthodox teaching methods. then again, it does portray a unique point of view from a person who was a victim of the failed education system, finding himself being part of the same system.

Anime heavily tends to center around school-related stuff, and not just "Dragon Ball Z". Handa-kun is one recent example, ReLIFE is another. Even Korean dramas also center around school themes. "Playful Kiss" is one I can name off the top of my head from Korea, even though its based on a manga from Japan, from around the same time Yu-Yu Hakusho came out, also in manga form.

So I've been watching this show since I was in elementary school. I'm now nearly 30 and it's still one of my favorites.
Great video thus far, but I think there are some cultural things that we as Americans just brush aside that actually bear much more importance in Japanese culture. Being class rep is one of those things. Considering they make students clean up classrooms daily, including things like the chalk erasers, i totally believe Keiko would have gotten repremanded for her fellow classmate not showing up.
I used to have tea and baked goods every friday with my principal and a small group of other students. Only those that were in the know had any idea it would even happened. One of my favorite memories.

Another series episode probably worth looking into would be Battle for Dream Island S1E3 - "Are You Smarter Than a Snowball", in which characters are given worksheets to fill out, though that doesn't begin to happen until around 2 minutes and 50 seconds into the episode. Other than that, the rest of BFDI generally has nothing to do with education.
For some context, BFDI is an animated web series by the RUclips channel jacknjellify in which anthropomorphic objects compete in a series of contests for a prize. (in the case of the first season, an island resort called Dream Island, hence the name) After each competition, viewers were instructed to vote on which member of the losing team would be eliminated (similar to how it works in shows like Survivor or Total Drama Island) and the results were subsequently revealed at the beginning of the next episode.

Your video got me curious about corporal punishment in Japan, so I looked it up. While most states in the US banned it before 2000, Japan didn't ban it completely until 2020. It was supposedly banned in schools back in 1947, but apparently this ban was not taken seriously.
It was commonplace even as recently as 2010. Yu Yu Hakusho was first published in 1990, and according to a poll conducted by the Nichi Bei Times paper in 1987, 60% of junior high school teachers that year believed corporal punishment to be "necessary."
Also, Japanese school uniforms were based on German infantry uniforms for the boys and German naval outfits for the girls, so you were on point when you said they looked military.

Keiko's friends talking about how yusuke "k!ll$ for fun" actually resonates with me. I was bullied through all of elementary school and most of my 7th grade year until someone actually punched me and i retaliated at a multi-school event. Fast forward 3 years when I was a sophomore in highschool and someone recognized me from the incident. He immediately started going off about how i smashed a chair over the kid's head when the reality was that i only punched him twice. Funny enough, the worst rumor came when my brother went to the same event and his classmates told him about how they heard from "a reliable source" that i k!lled the kid and that i was in jail. Rumors get out of hand very quickly.

6:40 the concept is more so to display that, the actions of the class is the responsibility of the class representative, just like with any team or group, when one player screws up, it makes the team look bad and the leader needs to correct that whether it be by setting a better example themself or by force/punishment. She may not have the capacity to enforce the rules with certain classmates like yusuke but then at that point the administration understands that she’s not a bad farmer, he’s just a bad apple
But of course we know there’s a lot more behind that grouchy look yusuke gives everyone

I am shocked to see the principal resorting to physical actions (e.g. ear pulling) on the minor student. However in episode 3, the principal is more refined.

I think it's a thing few may notice, even though Takenaka has good intentions he is undermining his efforts by getting physical.
This episode shows there are a variety of ways Yusuke is being failed by his school.

It would be interesting to do a commentary on a circumculum masters versus a teaching masters in education, through your experience.

A very good one you could watch is Card Captor Sakura (japanease version with subtitles pls, unfortunately the dubbing isn't good and they changed a lot of things when it went to America, like the order of the episodes and cutting episodes), more than half of CCS takes place on a day-to-day normal Japanese school and he touches on very delicate topics such as a romantic relationship between an adult teacher and a student.

Teachers and principal definitely shouldn’t hit students. But are they allowed to defend themselves? I heard about a teacher taken a phone away from a teenage student and she pepper sprayed him in his eyes, twice I think. Another instance, probably an elementary school or middle school, a teacher took a student’s Nintendo Switch away and he stated beating her on the ground. Would they have been allowed to defend themselves, or would that be a firing? Would the students not get in that much trouble?

Teachers (along with everyone) have the right to defend themselves. A lot of people get confused though about what “defending yourself” actually means. If you’re a teacher or principal, and you get attacked, you can use physical force to defend yourself and get the person off you. If they are no longer attacking you, it doesn’t mean you can turn around and attack them back. It’s helpful to be aware of how things will be perceived when they are investigated afterwards, too, and how they will look on camera. 👍
