  • Here is my tier list for Path of Radiance, alongside explanations of why each person ended up in each tier. Its important to remember that PoR is a very easy game, so if you only want to use the F tier units the game is still quite beatable. Let me know if you agree, disagree, or what other thoughts you have.

    I have a lot of disagreements with this list but none as huge as the statement that Ike has terrible bulk; I don't think I have ever had a problem with throwing Ike into a crowd of enemies and just letting him clean house (outside of him getting crit by a Lance guy at one point and bringing him low enough to be chipped away). But for the same token I do think hearing the opinions of someone else is really interesting!
    Also, Kieran being so high up is BASED. Hell yeah. Kieran is so good he's a meme character with my sister and I, where he is known as an "American Hero" and is a power couple with Marcia.

      100% agree. Ike is a little fragile the first few maps with his low starting HP, but he has great well rounded growths. You can get RNG screwed with him, but in my 5ish playthrough of PoR he's always a solid combat unit who can bang on the front line by the time I'm leaving Galia. Usually he's holding down a side on the two defend maps (7&11?) With minimal support for me.
      I'd put him in low B tier, because while he has weaknesses for sure, he has solid midgame and steamrolls once he gets Ragnell.

    Boyd is the reason I underrate axes in this game. Don't get me wrong, I've grown to love the guy, but the fact that he almost always gets double and has a proclivity to miss implanted on me that "oh, this is just what axes are like" (never mind the fact that axes are good on Titania because she is the specialest girl). Honestly, I'm surprised Kieran is as high as he is, because he's never been *that* good for me. Like, he's fine, but my Oscar usually out classes him, and if it's between axes and lances...
    I've always been a lance girl; low weight and high hit means consistently dealing double damage, almost regardless of stats. It's to the point where I almost don't feel bad about attacking into ax units with lance units because the weapon triangle doesn't do enough to dissuade me. So my armies almost always end up being full of lance units (with a couple of sword/magic units to round out the cast, and plenty of laguz).

      the flaws of early game Boyd and Kieran can be easily countered with a max hit forged Iron Axe. this applies to most under leveled fresh recruited units in fe9

    I really like Ilyana. She's my favorite unit in POR and she was a staple in both my POR and RD playthroughs thanks to her transfer bonuses and also the Mia bond support. They aren't amazing but I do like how early they join. But yeah Ilyana and Soren are pretty mid. This is Tellius and mages generally kinda suck in general but....come on.... • @DaniDoyle

      Marcia is absolutely not C tier in Maniac. She does definitely do worse since her combat stats are kinda "just good enough" on hard, but she still has flier utility and can do flunky combat for a bit. Dunno about the armors but I suspect they're still pretty bad. I didn't use either of them in my Maniac mode because the paladins also have pretty high defense, so I didn't find low move units that useful.

    Mages are better because thunder crit forge glitch + vantage.
    High Defense cap is great for a ironman mindset. Clash for example has enemies with more than 30 damage so having high defense General with knight guard is great for bait
    Stacking avoid support is good too but depends on speed and luck stats and byorithm

    Ike is not a "bad filler" unit at all. He is your first unit to double other than Titania, which results in him getting kills much more easily and getting an early lead of a few levels. He hits 100 accuracy when everyone else is facing shaky hit rates, and is significantly more durable in the early game than units like Oscar simply because everyone has comparably fragile bulk, but he gets hit half as often against the large number of axe users. He's placed into multiple early defend maps with low unit counts and multiple fronts where he meaningfully contributes. Then you get access to bexp and forges, and your other growth units catch up on speed thanks to the fact that strength points have been counting as speed for them, and yeah, he's not useful for a good stretch of the game, but he'll still get a ton of exp off the sheer enemy spam of chapter 17, then can jump back in and be a good unit with Ragnell. He's a unit who serves a very solid purpose at multiple points in the game (including the generally more difficult early game), is never a liability to keep alive, and has genuinely good combat late in the game.

    • @AlexaRobin21
      @AlexaRobin21 25 дней назад

      Ike isn't "half as likely to get hit." In Chapter 2 (the second-to-last chapter that was dominated by axe enemies), Ike has about 50% chance to get hit by axes while standing on bushes. At Lv.4 on Fixed Mode Ike has 21 HP and 6 Def, so he can be killed in 3 axe hits + 1 sword hit.
      Let's take Oscar for example. His offensive stats are roughly equal to Ike. He can also double axe enemies immediately with Iron Lance. His bulk is outright fantastic compared to Ike, at 27 HP and 8 Def. He can take 3 axes and 1 sword and survive. Oscar's only disadvantage compared to Ike is that his hit rate is kinda shakey, only 85% "real" hit rate against axes.
      By the time Oscar rejoins at Ch.5, Lance enemies are now officially outnumbering axe enemies, and Oscar can use Javelin which widens his options.

    Great list and good explanations throughout!
    I would definitely put Titania above Marcia. Those units who surpass Titania - espically Marcia, but also Kieran, Jill, Astrid, etc - will likely be doing so with a headstart thanks to the Bonus EXP that Titania earns in those early chapters. All of those units have a much harder time getting online without her early performances.
    I also think Reyson should be bumped down - he's obviously great, but in a game with cracked high move combat units across the board and easy EPing just lowers the dancer value a little. I also find he struggles to keep up with the units who want to be danced the most - those high move paladins and fliers - and is often just dancing tertiary units.

    • @DaniDoyle
      @DaniDoyle  Год назад

      Titania and Marcia are very close, and I can definitely see them swapping places, but personally I value marica's flight as well as the consistently great combat from her join to endgame over Titania's Phenomenal early contributions and okay to good contributions for the rest of the game. While titania does help you get the most BXP possible early on, you can still get a good amount of the ch 1-7 bxp without using her (from my testing at least).
      As for reyson, I find that i usually have enough flunkies to shove or rescue drop him to keep up with my army in most situations, with the possible exception of ch18 which is just an annoying map for a variety of reasons. Fire emblem needs to stop including long windy hallway maps.

    I dont know where I would put Tormod. But I would argue that he is a little underrated.
    His join time sucks. No ifs, ands, or buts. But, I think Fire is atleast "decent" for him to prioritize. and he is only 3 levels away from promoting. and having an extra staffer with 8 range is neat. Also he is Fire affinity and builds a quick support with Devdan and Reyson, who are both Fire affinity. and I think it isnt unreasonable for the supports to go that way. Reyson isnt exactly fighting to support other people aside from Tanith. and when A-support Devdan, B-support Reyson. That is +5 Attack rating. which i think is pretty good.

  • @henryreturns1397
    @henryreturns1397 Год назад +6

    - I would mentioned Jill should be up there with Titania and Marcia. Those red hair and pink hair are just insane units. Jill is a flyer that at first might not do much at her joining time but will freaking snowball the moment she promotes and she also has the same weapons as Titania. Furthermore , Jill on LTC , Speedruns and Draft races is an insane unit to have since her bases and grwoths allowed her to solo some maps and even if you dont use her much in terms of combat , she has insane utility on terrain due to her been a flyer
    - Haar I would personally put him around C tier or bottom of that. He joins late as a pre promote wyvern lord but he has his utility , his uses , decent combat , and can do small things. He is a decent filler if you dont have anyone. Also , as I mentioned with Jill , he can be a personal taxi for a good combat unit that has low movement , or Ike`s personal taxi lmao
    - Oscar I would move him to A tier since he is the calvalry with the most availability and he wears lances. Also he is one of the best supports with Ike , so you pretty much can have the two of them on the frontlines and go braindead. In addition to that , Oscar is insane in early game since lots of the objective required you to have units with good movements , something that only Titania and Oscar can do until you get Maria and Kieran.

    • @DaniDoyle
      @DaniDoyle  Год назад +1

      Jill's join situation means that giving her the BXP she needs to be on Marcia's level is suboptimal, since Marcia has 2 more maps to use the giant dump (or 3 if you don't stealth ch10). She can perform as well as Marcia if you do BXP dump her, but since she misses those three chapters there's really no reason to choose her instead of Marcia meaning that she will lag behind slightly for the mid game. She's still in elite unit and is very close to perfect but I do think that she belongs a step below S to show that her performance lacks in comparison to Marcia/Titania.
      As for Oscar, I think you're exaggerating the usefulness of his early availability. The only map where you need 2 high move units before getting Marcia and Kieran is ch2, and that's only if you care about routing it quickly. Ch1's house is reachable in 3 turns with infantry, ch3 and 4 are maps Oscar can't play in, ch5 is a defense map, ch 6 he can help rescue drop ike I guess titania can do that just as well, ch7 is a route map but you don't need much movement for it as Shinon and Gatrie both show up on the top left, and should be able to handle it fairly well, maybe with some help with Titania, ch8 is a defense map and ch9's side objective is across sand so infantry unironically get there faster than Oscar does. He's still a good unit and should be on every team, but anything he does pre-ch10 is basically for self improvement, since his base combat isn't especially spectacularm

    As someone new to Tellius but having played every non NES, non Archanea game, Path of Radiance is far from the easiest game. FE4, FE8, and Echoes are quite a bit easier especially early on. Some of the early chapters of Path of Radiance are quite difficult. If you are discounting extreme modes I think all the 3DS and Switch games are easier as well although I did not play much Fates.

    Would love to do a rebalance hack of this game. The challenge is that, as you said, this is one of the easiest games alongside titles like Birthright and Sacred Stones.
    Some steps would be to close the gap between infantry and cavalry, buff mages in general, buff bows, and buff Laguz. However, all these buffs have to exist in the confines of an easy game without making it absolutely trivial.

    So am I insane for thinking Ike is one of the better lord units in fire emblem? I’m still really early on, like just hit chapter 8 early so maybe he falls way off but he’s been doing way more for me in the early stages than Roy or Eliwood ever did for me in those games. I’d argue Haar should be bottom of C, I think you are underselling his combat. He is bulky af and his speed is not abysmal either. Sure he isn’t the best mounted unit, but imo any unit with decent combat and canto should be C tier at the very least.
    Edit: same applies to Geoffrey

    • @DaniDoyle
      @DaniDoyle  Год назад

      Haar i can see moving up (although I think hes fine where he is simply due to availability and speed issues) but Geoffrey definitely not. He's only available for 5 maps and one of them is one of the few maps where you don't want to be a paladin. His combat is fine for the other 4 maps but he's going to be your worst paladin and being the worst paladin for only 4 out of 33 maps isn't something I especially value. If anything I would be more open to moving him down but I think that might be a bit too extreme of a penalty for his availability

    It felt a bit harder than I was expecting to me, as a veteran. However, it was my first time playing, so I guess that contributes a lot but, even still…. Don’t you find Sacred Stones rather easy?
    Also, FE7 to some degree has a comparable difficulty I felt.
    I’d love to hear what makes those more difficult though, it would be fun to compare and contrast. If you haven’t already, an FE difficulty Tier List could be cool.

  • @ronjohnson2760
    @ronjohnson2760 Год назад +3

    I Disagree with some placements.
    Soren is too low, you dont need to bexp dump him. You can feed him some kills when you first get him and get him up to speed pretty quick.
    Jill should be S tier. She's objectively better than Marcia because Axes are far better than swords are. This game is very enemy phase dominated and swords just aren't very good on enemy phase except for Ragnell, Sonic Sword and Runesword, none of which are weapons that can or should be used on Marcia.
    Tanith is an A tier unit. Slightly worse than Marcia and Jill but still incredibly good.
    Mist is way too low. when promoted she is a mounted staff user that can actually fight. She has high magic so she is a monster with Sonic sword and almost game breaking with Runesword. Also she is a Canto unit.
    Nephenee is too low. Feed her some kills and it doesnt take long before she starts gaining momentum. You dont need to dump BEXP into her to get the ball moving on her. I don't. Also Nephenee starts with Wrath which is really strong and if you giver her resolve later on, GG. She's not an S tier unit obviously, but she's strong if you can get her past the first few levels.
    Laguz: Would you rather have a unit that is powerful some of the time or one that is powerful all of the time? Shove does not earn deployment spots on its own. That said Muarim is pretty good with the demi band and Leath can be okay in some situations. The other really critical flaw that all laguz share is that they do poorly on enemy phase. They are 1 range locked, and if they are transformed they can find themselves getting attacked and then reverting back to human form. In a game that is dominated by the enemy phase, that is a really awful Achilles heel to have.
    Volke is way too low. He is a unit that you are going to bring a lot of the time later on because the enemy will have very valuble weapons equipped that you can steal. Stuff like sleep and Physic staves, seige tomes, short spears, spears, short axes and tomahawks. You dont get very many of these weapons in a playthrough without stealing them so Volke automatically earns deployment because of how much value he brings with this.

      If she was available for more than three chapters I would agree with you but it's literally three chapters and her performance is quite poor in all of those chapters, even if you choose to deploy her. The minor combat contributions the rest of the e tier is doing are more valuable imo.
      However like I said in the introduction a large number of units doesn't mean a large gap in quality, that's what the tear differences are for, I think she performs very close to the other e tiers, there's just a lot of units that occupy that space of "barely not f tier"

    This Tier List feels very LTC and makes sense for a game that is easier than most. In hard mode having Marcia, a Jill mist combination killing and on the other side a Kieran Oscar combination killing is insane. I mention Mist because even if her combat is not amazing her avoid is and that is fire. I always felt your units were too strong in this game (haven’t played Japanese maniac) to the point that this hard mode is the only one I have ironmanned and it didn’t even feel dreadful (other than an unfortunate crit here and there). I would say FE9 is the easiest game without grinding, but it is a perfect way to learn about how to improve at Fire emblem, since it encourages your files to be efficient without being unforgiving, and giving you bonkers Mounted units

      I guess it's kinda late to respond, but hey, I'm finishing PoR these days, and I found your comment.
      Getting to the point, Nasir is playable only if Ike manages to defeat the Black Knight at the end of Chapter 27. This is usually possible if Ike is close to capped stats and if he's got his class mastery skill, Aether, and gets lucky enough to activate it. If the Black Knight is defeated, Nasir is not fatally wounded by him, so he can escape with Ena, and then join your army at the start of chapter 28.
      Maniac mode is a difficulty setting that exists in the Japanese version of the game, but was removed on international releases. Afaik it increases difficulty by adding a lot more enemies to every map and changing some standard enemy groups into promoted enemies. I've seen people say it's more so tedious than challenging, so I personally don't want to try it.

      Too bad in any case, I would have liked to play the maniac mode. 😭
