      Why can't valve release this game open source and cs 1.6. Old menu and fix 300fps with no cons like it is today with half life and CS 1.6. It fucks up the physics and stuff. The crosshair for example was always developed for 60fps. You can see this for yourself if you put fps 300 and how the crosshair and other stuff reacts completly diffrent than they should do. Really love your channel. Keep it top notch!

      spera you can also notice how you bash corpses in the Steam Version of Half-Life. Unlike Half-Life WON Version (1.0.0.5 - 1.0.1.6), Steam Version's bash corpses like extremely fast. The WON Version's (1.0.0.5 - 1.0.1.6) bash corpses like normal.

    I saw in another video that another retail feature broken in the Steam release is the randomly-tiling wall textures. In retail, certain surfaces would select texture tiles randomly from a set to options, in order to increase the level of visual interest in the environment. In the Steam release, these surfaces will have a single repeating tile.

      I think that feture broke somewhere when you patched Retail. as the CD version did restive patches that are not part of the steam launcher.
      back when patches needed to be manually downloaded from some website.
      and then installed in the correct order one after the other.

  • @MrMcSwifty
    @MrMcSwifty 7 лет назад +60

    Good video, but I do have a few nitpicks.
    For instance, you list 16:9 aspect ratio and 100+ fps as pros for the Steam version, but both of those are also attainable in the retail version as well. The aspect ratio requires a exe hack (see pcgamingwki for that) but the unlocked fps is a simple console command. (iirc, adding developer 0 is enough to unlimit framerates).
    I have no idea where the 30fps cap comes from but that definitely hasn't been an issue for me. Every retail version I've ever played was weirdly capped at 72fps. Easily overridden.
    Someone else mentioned the removal of EAX/A3D, so I won't mention that again. But also they removed Direct3D and that screwed over a lot of people who have issues with OpenGL and don't want to play with the pixellated software renderer.
    I'll leave it at that for now but just wanted to point out that a lot of your pros/cons for the two versions aren't really applicable if you're running the latest (1.1.1.0) patch for the retail version. With a reasonable amount of tweaking you should easily be able to get it running on modern hardware/resolutions/etc without missing out on all the stuff that was removed in the Steam version.
    Still a great comparison otherwise though; hope this doesn't come off as me shitting on your video.

    • @Vect0Rx
      @Vect0Rx  7 лет назад +12

      Without hacking game it's not possible to enable 16:9, so i went as vanilla. For FPS, in 1.0.0.9 fps_max command isn't exist yet and developer "1" command won't help it at all. To be honest, Direct3D wasn't really a con for me.

    • @MrMcSwifty
      @MrMcSwifty 7 лет назад +6

      I completely understand your reasons for doing so, just saying it's not impossible or even that difficult to enable those resolutions in the retail version. And I can accept that maybe the 72fps limit was introduced in 1.1.1.0, but I have an original up-patched disk version of HL on my work computer and it most definitely is not limited to 30fps, even without an available fps_max command.
      I'll see if I can give you some screenshots/configs in the next day or so.

      But I and most other people I knew decided to shell out extra bucks just for the GOTY edition because it included TFC which we knew was already free since we still used dial up modems and it was so agonizingly slow. (I also chose the GOTY edition for the nicer looking box art.) I would have done the same for the retail Counter-Strike if I hadn't already installed the mod version.

    Not bad, although I expected a bit more in-game differences. For instance I clearly remember that during my first WON version of hl campaign I've managed to kill Garg in the "On A Rail" chapter, by accidentally launching a grenade from the mp5 grenade-launcher and hitting garg slightly above the red eye. Turned out, it was their weak spot, so I also repeated that when I met Garg on the parking lot, lol...
    From what I've heard, steam doesn't have that feature and makes Gargs invincible till they die by script. Also, WON version of Half-Life, as well as addons featured neat loading screens, featuring main characters. Steam version simply has translucent loading screen.
    Yeah... Well... Good ol' times... *sheds a nostalgic tear*

    • @xGMV
      @xGMV 7 лет назад +1

      Correct! Though I was able to fix it by replacing some .dll files from Moddb, it also made the MP5 shoot faster than normal. By the way, is there any possible reason as to why my game can't run in fullscreen without weird glitches? Such as only being able to see the left upper corner of the screen and not being able to control the aim at all, though it keeps rotating clockwise. And yet again, all the mods work, aside from Counter-Strike 1.5 (if I'm not mistaken) which freezes and then crashes upon a map start. Again, thanks for your attention! And for the heart, too. :)

    • @Vect0Rx
      @Vect0Rx  7 лет назад +2

      I was going to include MP5 too, but since FPS factor also changes shooting speed i wasn't sure at all. I need to check source code to be sure. But i think WON is more faster than latest version. For the glitch i have no clue sadly. Probaly your modern hardware isn't compatiable or Win7-10.

    You forgot one of the biggest cons for the Steam version; That it's forever tied to a single Steam account and can never be sold or given away as you can with the retail version.

    • @DeepDiveDevin
      @DeepDiveDevin 7 лет назад +6

      As much as you aren't technically wrong, the issue plaguing all digital games can not be solely attributed to the Steam version of one game.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 7 лет назад

      No, but Valve, through the use of Steam, was one of the first companies to tie games (even retail copies) to an online account. They paved the way and others followed. Would this have happened without Valve/Steam? Probably, but since they did it first, they get the blame for being pioneers in killing the second-hand market for games.

    • @DeepDiveDevin
      @DeepDiveDevin 7 лет назад

      Okay, but that's still not specifically Half-Life's doing.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 7 лет назад

      I never said that the Steam version of Half-Life was directly responsible for killing the second hand market. My original comment was that it was a large con that the Steam version of Half-Life is forever tied to a Steam account and therefore could never be sold or given away. I stand by that opinion.
      The fake quote about Valve killing off the second-hand market was a dig at Valve for doing this with all their games and also a snarky way of illustrating why having games tied to online accounts is bad.

    • @DeepDiveDevin
      @DeepDiveDevin 7 лет назад +2

      See what I'm saying though is that it's so non-specific to Half-Life that I don't see why it's important in this context, especially since the reason given is not being able to resell it. Is anyone really buying Half-Life's original PC version in 2017 just because of the hope that they can just sell it off to someone else?

    Though I like it, I can't say that much was broken by Steam HL.
    There was updates for WON(latest is HL 1.1.1.0), where things started to break and get better. Just read the difference between old HLSDKs and HLSDK 2.3 introduced for 1110.

    *sigh
    I knew it from the start you ain't gonna show the significant EAX/A3D comparisons to the steam MilesSoundSystem one. How drastic the environmental audio differences are with the retail and steam version. EAX owns MSS so hard it's not even funny. Also you could have adjusted the brightness/gamma and sound levels of the retail version since they're just as configurable as the steam version. Now instead someone might get the idea that retail is inferrior and less customizable than the steam version, eventhough that most certainly ain't the case here.
    Other than these few gripes, thanks for making the video and you did show some very valid things also such as that strafecap. Although you could have shown the HD models specifically but gun-wise that is also kinda more of subjective on which is better. I personally prefer the original MP5 over the Steam M4 Assault Rifle and so forth.

    "Install Half-Life" is not appearing as an option when I run autorun? I am using Windows 7 x64 and I believe I have a fairly early copy of Half-Life from 1998. I insert the disc and locate the DVD drive files and click it but only the bottom 3 options show up. How do I get around this?
    Edit: Okay, I tried again recently (6 months later) and, miraculously, the Install option showed up and I got it to work pretty easily. Unfortunately, I now can’t play the Hazard Course because it takes a while saying that it’s reading the CD (I think it was something along those lines) and eventually says it failed to validate CD. What to do?

    Buying digital is all well and good, but you can't get the voice actors to sign your Steam Account. Take Unreal Tournament 2004, the only way to get Unreal Tournament 2004 was by sending Epic Games the manual from Unreal Tournament 2003, Steam wasn't as popular then as it is now. Boxed copies of Unreal Tournament 2003, still in their selephane wrappers go for a good penny on eBay.

Was the soundtrack added on the steam version or did the original one had a soundtrack but i had it disabled for some reason?

    • @avtomatkalashnikova1947

      The music's always been there since release, maybe you used an ISO version of Half-Life from the internet. In games where the CD music is used as music in-game, the game would check the first drive for audio. If not, no music will play.
      To hear music in the retail version of Half-Life, you had to go to the device manager and disable the physical CD drive if you're using the ISO version.

    Ah the classic menu's and that gold gameplay... They don't do games like these anymore.
    Not to mention, Valve seems to be stuck with that "plain white text and image" type menu with their Source games. I hope they use a menu like the original Half-Life, instead of the plain one.
