A shame that Bill Buckner was actually an unsung hero of a very long career and this is what he is remembered for by the majority. Bill was an extraordinary talent and more importantly, a man of noble character.
Being a Dodger fan since 1958 I remember when Buckner came up about same time as Garvey, Cey, Russell, Ferguson and Bobby Valentine and loved them all. I was heart broken when Dodgers traded Billy for Rick Monday. I stayed a fan of Billy's when he was with Cubs and then Boston. Thanks for the great memories and for being a class act. RIP Mr. Buckner
Mookie is trying to be polite. But there is no way in Hell Buckner would have beaten him to the bag. And Stanley failed to cover 1st on the play, so there would be nobody to throw the ball to.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! I have always blamed McNamara for that one. Buckner was hobbling, barely able to run at all, let along field a ground smoothly and then pivot to toss the ball to the pitcher at first base. He should never have been there. (And no, he wasn't being kept in there for his bat -- up to that point, he'd been doing terribly against Mets pitching.)
Just another reason to blame Stanley for fucking up, on top of the run scoring wild pitch he threw while pitching to mookie which tied the game and put the winning run on 3rd
Buckner never struck out more than twice in a single game. In a career that lasted over 20 seasons that doesn't even sound possible. That was the kind of hitter he was.
I remember seeing Rich Eisen's tribute where he pointed out that in the 1970s and '80s combined, only Pete Rose had more hits than Bill Buckner. I would have never guessed.
I'm glad ESPN did a Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame episode for Bill Buckner. Buckner should have never been in that position in the first place. Heck, he told McNamara he had no problem with Dave Stapleton going in as a defensive replacement.
Life long fan of the Chicago Cubs. We loved Buckner when he was a Cub. And many of us would not have cared one iota about the 86 Series had it been anyone other than the Mets!!! And Yes, I let out the 'charlie brown' "AAhhhhhhhhh" when the ball went through his legs. But the game was basically blown by Stanley and Shiraldi long before Buckner's play took place. And had Bill even made the play, that would NOT have ended the game, It would've just sent it into the 10th inning since they were tied at that point. No guarantee that the Red Sox would've still pulled it out. But I will always cherish all the good memories of Bill Buckner.
HELLO! Even if Buckner makes that play. Even if Stanley covers 1st and makes the out. The game is still TIED! Then either team could have won that game. Dave Henderson could have been a hero. Or a Mets player could have been a hero with the walkoff- yeah I know it wasn't called walk off at that time. Remember that Strawberry was taken out of the game. So, Strawberry couldn't have been the hero that night.
Even if Buckner make the play the game is still tied and goes to extra innings. With Mets at home and over coming the big lead Boston had it is more than likely Mets win it anyway in extra innings.
and won a batting championship with the Cubs/1980. 16 at the time when they traded Buckner to the Red Sox, in 1984. a part of me NEVER got over that. players like Bill Buckner's DON'T come around often. RIP my guy.
You know what has always confused me about Boston fans is how easily they forgot how that comeback happened in the first place... forgetting the fact that Schiraldi had given up 3 base hits in a row after getting the first two quick outs... forgetting the fact that Bob Stanley threw that wild pitch that allowed the tying run to score...
35 years ago on Oct 25th 1986 , was one of the greatest nights in my life.....So the winning run is at second base, with two outs, three and two to Mookie Wilson. A little roller up along first... behind the bag! It gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight, and the Mets win it! Scully then remained silent for more than three minutes, letting the pictures and the crowd noise tell the story. Scully resumed with: If one picture is worth a thousand words, you have seen about a million words, but more than that, you have seen an absolutely bizarre finish to Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. The Mets are not only alive, they are well, and they will play the Red Sox in Game 7 tomorrow
bill wouldn't have even been there had cubs front office didn't make that horrible trade!!!a guy named Kennedy in cubs front office screwed cub fans with his crappy trades.kingman for Steve henderson!!!???.
Given that the Mets had already tied the game, Bucker definitely gets too much blame for that loss (or got too much blame, I think attitudes have shifted). But even if Mookie would have been safe at first, the game wouldn't have ended. Ray Knight was on second, not third. As long as Buckner kept the ball in front of him, Knight wouldn't have scored.
Mookie probably beats Buckner or Stanley to the bag, however the key is the fact that it got through and made it to the outfield. If the ball was fielded and Mookie beat the play, Ray Knight stops at third and it's all up to Howard Johnson.
Mookie would have beaten him, Billy was hovering badly chasing that ball and Stanley just froze and didn't run to cover first base any baseball fan can see that
I mean--by the way, I liked Bill Buckner and it's too bad this happened to him. At the time, I actually blamed The Curse of the Bambino instead of Buckner. I just thought it was funny the way he put "better look at it."
More than 5 feet bro, Probably about 10....look at it again and mookie was flying...I'll leave it up to the 2 involved saying it would have been real close
Buckner is a man of character. RIP.
A shame that Bill Buckner was actually an unsung hero of a very long career and this is what he is remembered for by the majority. Bill was an extraordinary talent and more importantly, a man of noble character.
The Sox would have never gotten to the series had they not had Buckner. McNamera even called him his best overall player.
Miserable bum cost his team the series

A GOOD MAN.... GREAT CAREER...IT WAS A PLEASURE WATCHING HIM PLAY THE GAME...RIP BILL BUCKNER....CLASS ACT....

Buckner is being too humble. With his knees and ankles no way he beats Wilson and fat fuck Stanley wasn't covering.
agree - but why was Buckner playing while hobbled? McN, mistake ?
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! I have always blamed McNamara for that one. David Whiteis he was put in there to be
On the field for the celebration and it cost them dearly
Just another reason to blame Stanley for fucking up, on top of the run scoring wild pitch he threw while pitching to mookie which tied the game and put the winning run on 3rd
That ball kind of wobbled. I think it was a harder field than most people appreciate, even for a pro.
I wish l could've just gave Buckner a hug.
Rest in Peace "Billy Buck"... class act...
RIP Bill. :(
rip bill buckner
Billy Buckners class after all the shit he went through is a testament to the man ! RIP !
Buckner was suppose to have a defensive replacement in for him before the binning started
Rest In Paradise Bill 😇💟✝️💜
Bill Buckner was and is a CLASS ACT....his suffering speaks for the Boston fans,
Buckner never struck out more than twice in a single game. In a career that lasted over 20 seasons that doesn't even sound possible. That was the kind of hitter he was.
Yeah, even Tony Gwynn struck out three times in a game once and he never struck out.
I remember seeing Rich Eisen's tribute where he pointed out that in the 1970s and '80s combined, only Pete Rose had more hits than Bill Buckner. I would have never guessed.

Mookie is being a class act 50/50 my ass. He would have beaten Stanley to the bag.
Love these guys!

RIP Buckner - but regarding that 86 ball who can guarantee that the Red Sox would win? Buckner could have missed the throw, who knows?
Two class players, if there ever were one.
If Angel Hernandez had been the first base ump in that game he would have called Mookie out : )
The ball took a very odd bounce and skipped through his legs.
Even if Buckner make the play the game is still tied and goes to extra innings. With Mets at home and over coming the big lead Boston had it is more than likely Mets win it anyway in extra innings.
bill buckner is my hero
Hero? I like hero's that catch the ball. (Something Donald Trump might say in a given instance!)
RIP Buckner, great player.
Hate that the guy had to live with that for the rest of his life..and there was still game 7 ahead and they lost
Buckner has MORE career HITS than 70% of the players in the HOF.

Very clever of Buckner to point out that Bob Stanley was late getting off the mound without actually saying it. Well done, sir.
He redeemed himself by catching a baby that was thrown from an apartment on fire. Look it up...
There is cubs Mets game where Wilson reaches first and Bill hands him decorated from his back pocket
Bill is a class act.
Even if Mookoe beat it out, Knight wouldn't have scored from 2nd.
People know his name, now and forever. Bill Buckner.
Buckner could play on my teams any day.
Mookie would have beaten him, Billy was hovering badly chasing that ball and Stanley just froze and didn't run to cover first base any baseball fan can see that
Grew up a Spokane Indian!
Every time I see Bill Buckner speak I wonder what’s wrong with his front teeth. That’s all I care about (lol). That and the fact that we won.
Well he has passed so no wondering anymore
What a great guy.
"Mookie had a better view of that than I did." Yeah, because he was looking at first base, and you were looking into right field. Just sayin'.
I mean--by the way, I liked Bill Buckner and it's too bad this happened to him. At the time, I actually blamed The Curse of the Bambino instead of Buckner. I just thought it was funny the way he put "better look at it."
Buckner would have beat him easy if anything if it was close he could have dove mookie was 20 feet away Buckner was 5
More than 5 feet bro, Probably about 10....look at it again and mookie was flying...I'll leave it up to the 2 involved saying it would have been real close
Nope. If you watch the replay again and time it out in your head there's no way Buckner beats Mookie to the bag.
Buckner also had chronically bad ankles and could barely run during the 1986 postseason.
