HEAD SCANNING WITH YOUR PHONE

- I got a lot of requests for this! So here is a very quick introduction to photogrammetry and a rough tutorial to get you started doing decent head scanning. You'll need a phone and some 3D modelling software. Sorry Mac users this ones a free one for PC only. I'll do an Agisoft one for Mac later as Zephyr Free isn't available for Macs.
I'll do more tutorials soon!!!
Cameras used:
Canon EOS 5D Mk. IV (best quality raw scans come from DSLRs!)
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus
Link to Zephyr free below:

I thought the progress on photogrametry would have been much better through the years. I programmed that back in 2004. And it was a tedious process. Esp. camera calibration gt much better these days. Software nowadays got better. But compared to the rapid evolution of other technologies it doesn't look like the accelerators do really care about photogrametry. What I am still waiting for is that some AI is capable of extracting 3D models from movies...
Its better with high quality dslr photos, but im just using a phone cam for worst case senario. I wish auto masking existed. But defo my current fav easy go to photogrammetry app, thanks for writing it!!. I wish the point cloud dots were larger like they were in an older version. An introduction of some AI to clean up the meshes would be nice! Agisoft does get slightly sharper results but has no inbuilt masking. Takes longer.
Yup, got the same feeling as you, but... I think that at this point is not worthy to invest on photogrammetry as there is development in AI technologies like NERF
@@Cloakfiend Hm, not sure how Topaz Mask AI is .. but that could be useful for auto masking.
@@davidedwardsme not sure but i love gigapixel. I thought of maybe using that to increase image sharpness, but AI means each frame will be artificially enhanced with no relation to the previous frame. But i will try it out of curiosity at some point unless it takes longer than a regular clean up. Its just abiut whats quickest really.
@@Cloakfiend Yup true. Gigapixel will add random information per frame. Mask AI .. from what i understand just cuts out the subject .. to what degree of success i have no idea lol :D Hopefully you can batch that process on multiple frames.
Definitely give SureScan 3D Scanner app a try. Newly released, much faster 3D scan with the TrueDepth sensor. No losing track and superior 3D mesh quality
What file format does it store in?
Is SureScan Free? And do I have to move it to my computer to print on my Bambu Lab X1-carbon? I’m new at this Thank You!!🎩🪄👍 Rich The Magic Man:)🎂🎈❤️🎩🪄👍
The best presentation about phone 3d scanning.
This is fantastic rundown of your process! Thank you for taking the time to make this. Can't wait to try it. We are taking a stab at making 3D printed masks in zbrush for a class that I teach, and I am planning to pass this on so students can use their own head as the basis for a custom fitted mask. I'll let you know how it goes :)
Thanks! Im making more of these. Ill put my full unedited ones on my patreon and my condensed ones here.
I also make masks ill be posting my tuts about that too.
@@Cloakfiend I definitely look forward to seeing what your process is. Thanks again :)
@@joshuajones6113 youre welcome!
Great video. With all the AI and Lidar and Apps available today, this method while very time consuming, appear to be giving the best results.
I hope it works to objects too I'm going to try it on an antique violin that I need to scan.
Yes you can, but the resolution in zephyr is not as good for objects. There is no ultra mode, only for human body im Afraid. But give it a try by all means.
Awesome results! I'll be waiting for your Agisoft tutorial as I am one of those Mac users. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the author's explanation. In fact, I recommend using a 3D scanner, SENSEPLUS, which can directly scan the user's head to generate a 3D model, which can save a lot of time by printing directly on the 3D printer
Very intriguing. The learning curve on some of these photogrammetry tools can be daunting. This looks to be just difficult enough to be a challenge, but still doable for a determined layperson. Going to give this a go!
Defo try it! Its pretty straight forward, if youve masked the images well, just click that make model button at the start and it goes straight to making the mesh automatically.
I uploaded an older version i still had in my downloads folder! link in description
as for some reason the link in the free version on the website doesn't work.
Amazing thanks for sharing, this is what Im also hoping to do as a hobby. Would love to see a bobble head version.
Ive already done bobble heads but I always found it annoying with long hair. Besides i dont want people touching the delicate ones!
Excellent work! Thank you for sharing this. Very informative and great to see your process.
Thanks! Much apptreciated!!
I'm amazed! Great work.
Thanks!
Brilliant video, Exactly what I was looking for. Would you consider doing a video explaining the whole zbrush side of it in more detail (ie adding the eyes)
Thanks!
Yep im doing it just ive filmed way too much already like 6 hours and ive been ill so just wait a few days ive got a fun scanning video im posting tomorrow first!
thank you buddy! you really smashed it!
Dude that's amazing!! Thanks for showing your work flow. It really helps! I'd like to see how you did the eyes. I'm gonna attempt using zephyr soon with using Nomad sculpt for the cleanup.
Thanks a lot! Much appreciated!
How did it go with using nomad do you have a video progression that shows what tools worked best to clean up your 3d scan
@@sayonara78 i tend to just use clay buildup and dam std in ZB. I never used nomad.
@@sayonara78 Nomad is really good for cleaning up! I use it all the time with my revopoint Pop2 scans.
Awesome video explaining all the steps! Very informative! Just got yourself a sub!
Thanks a lot!
Este amigo es de los que no se andan con cuentos, todo rápido, a lo que vienes por el vídeo, al grano pues., Excelente video 👌🏻
Thats mad!
Lose looks so stylised and sometimes better for sculptures.
: )
Thanks
Why not invest in a tripod and a swivel chair?
It seems you'd get a lot more consistency in using photogrammetry.
If the device has a depth sensor, you could supplement the structured light with the photogrammetry model.
This is worst case, a decent dslr does great.
I was just talking about the film Scanners the other day, and when I saw this in my feed I immediately assumed someone was gonna explode.
Great movie!
Brilliant! Thank you for the details.
No problem! a more indepth tutorial coming soon!
This was excellent . I was searching different ways to make 3d scan of face out of images and have enough details to print a decent looking resin model out of it. Your video is perfect. I would like to see more videos on this topic. Maybe changes your camera to latest iPhone since most people have that and print the model of scanned face. I would love to see the results.
Hey thanks. Already on it. I'm posting entire full length tutorials soon. From import to finished model. I may cover 3d printing as well but one thing at a time.
I just got an s21 ultra will try 8k!
I tried it but my computer died, so waitimg for new one to arrive.
@@Cloakfiend hey there how did you go with 8k?
@@hans6304 just about to post a vid about it!! Hopefully tonight or this evening. Zephyr 6 is very different to zephyr 7. The matrixes are much larger so you get higher polycount but higher poly count doesnt always mean better. Its just more polys. I only trie phone 8k btw not dslr 8k. For best quality use a dslr btw, my tutorials are for on the go scanning so just phone based. I used a s21 ultra and tested a s23 ultra, didnt find much difference in picture quality btw indoor filming still sucked.
Awesome SCANS !! THX FOR SHARING !! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😎
Welcome, more coming soon.
Where is my head , Dude?? 😁By the way....really great work!!
Thanks dude! You're head is somewhere on my autodesk account I haven't used in years! Lol
thanks for showing this! I'd love to see you just record your process sometime rather than attempting to recreate it. The zbrush part at the end was especially neat. Also, can you maybe make a short post explaining the eyes? Where did you get them/how did you make them?
Dont worry I do a lot of these. I'll record one from start to finish. Even if I have to do it in parts.
If you like you can get someone to film you and ill make you up if you like? Then send me the video. Keep it around 1min 30. And film on an overcast day or well lit room in 4k or 8k and i can then explain how I do it pointing out stuff? Sent to cloakfiend@gmail.com. ill send you the finished scan after.
@@Cloakfiend Sorry man, just seeing this now, that's an amazing offer, but right now I don't have the time to give to this. Still, super cool of you to offer.
@@radiantthought no probs! I meant you spend 1min to film yourself and send it to me and I document you on my channel and send you your model free online.
@@Cloakfiend can i sent mine to you i stead 🙃
Thanks for sharing the insightful workflow...it's brilliant as others have chimed in. I'm curious as to what notebook platform and stylus you are using to edit for this demonstration?
I use a wacom cintique companion 2 (now out of production) I have recently got a Wacom mobile studio pro which is the newer version. Cant beat them for zbrushing on the go.
Thank you for sharing. Very impressive
Thankyou
Nice work I’m trying to learn to do it. I got many people asking to make they dead ones.
Ray Liota's - "No Escape"
part 2...deep future
'...a man is condemned as guilty of a crime because he comprehends it...he is sent to a massive camp of undesirables...sees the future as good and escapes...'
If you want more Polly's then I would suggest using dynamesh, also if you want frame reference on another window I would advise you to become very familiar with PureRef
Im happy with my method, but ill look into pureref out of curiosity. Always open to impoving though! Mind you it never ends! I tend to dynamesh and project later. But its not always needed tbh. My heads are usually about 750k I only go higher if i cant get the lashes looking good low.
@@Cloakfiend dynamesh and projection is just incredible and because it's 3D printed and high poly you don't have to worry about topology as much either.
But yh PureRef is just 👌🏻 once you use it and get used to it then you can't ever go back honestly I was shown it in college and never looked back.
@@OG_Account i like to keep the models as raw as i can. I only project to get the higher polycount.
@@Cloakfiend ah so you don't do much creative re-sculpting just more like clean up then?
@@OG_Account whatever is needed really. I have done all sorts over the years. Each one is unique and sometimes I add bits or turn friends into zonbies or whatever.
2:44 maybe use a Dremel tool with a tiny bit?
I thought of using a dremel with a thin burring tool. But i dont have it anymore. That will be for next time!
cool thx been wanting to get into 3d printing
Awesome! Im going to post new vids soon!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
You are welcome!
I have been using the Revopoint POP 2 scanner for a few weeks, but I don't always have it with me, and the camera more often. I think it is a great alternative. Do you think that using additional lighting mounted on the camera can give better results? This works fine for a scanner.
Not mounted lighting. Id just go somewhere universaly lit. Never let the lights near the subject as you will get edge lighting from some angles. Also make sure people wipe their faces from sweat before a scan. Shiny skin is bad. But back on lights, i just look for good spots. If you are good with cleaning up you can get away with some real poor lighting and still get great results!
I love the detailed tutorial and your amazing results! Thank you for it!
I have one question, how do you handle hair, like long hair? Should you tie them into a tail and then remove off the scanned hair and add some sculpted hair? Or what is your workflow there?
I sometimes ask them to tie it back so i can see their ears but its also better as you see more of the face. The hair is done last generally.
Nice but I prefer Meshroom. Stick to the defaults and there's nothing else to do except deleting a few unwanted faces afterwards.
Instead of using the Clay Buildup brush, you should be using the Peaks & Valley brush to knock off all the bumps. Other then that, it was a nice little video.
Thanks was a bit rushed! I like leaving some surface texture and sometimes but others I smooth out more. But true, I'll look into using peaks and valleys more!
@@Cloakfiend Awesome 👏,, keep making such amazing inspiring content brother. Best of luck.
@@3DPrintingGeek Thanks you too!
Can I give you one really small tip from someone who sculpts, use something other than the red wax, get rid of that, bin it, it's so bad for sculpting. I don't know why it's the default. Use like a mat grey clay or something honestly you will thank me.
thx ♥ man, hope u make tutorial about printing and using blender in this regards
Very cool
Very nice demo.
How did you print out the images, what kind of printer did you use?
I use an elegoo mars2pro
Interesting that where he lives, overcast sky is called a clear day.
Lol, yes thays my bad! I meant to say plain white sky but said clear day instead somehow.
Hi. Even though i tried multiple times. I am not able to get the quality of scan. How are you generating such high res models using the free version.
Me to dude i tried a lot of time and type but same result, just trash.
You don't even Dynamesh the model and the print still looks pretty good.
I always try to work with the raw file as much as i can before i do anything.
@@Cloakfiend It's a pain to work with all those triangles, so kudos to you!
@@joyg2526Thanks! Consider it a few hours of therapy! Lol
Im very curious how you were able to achieve such an accurate likeness of piers morgan, given its unlikely you were able to get as many shots as the subject in this video. Are you able to give any insight to this? I'd love to see a video. Awesome work, thank you for sharing this! :)
I took 27 photos of Piers myself with a cannon 5d mk3. For a model i made up of him which was sent into space to celebrate the moon landings. High end cameras produce much sharper scan results than phones due to less lens distortion and higher definition and picture quality. But phones are not that far behind if im honest. I use a phone normally as in this tut, but when I want that extra quality I'd use a dslr.
Fantastic!
Thanks!
Great work! 🙌
Thanks dude, now you know how I Gonna scan you!
Thanks.
Im doing a new tutorial now using the current version of zephyr 7.
I want to scan my head/neck and custom print embellishments....i.e. glasses, spkrs, lights, mics and masks and heaters and coolers...oh my
😍Thank you for sharing!👍
Thanks! Appreciate it!
good video .thanks a bundle 😁
Legend!!!
Great video, but you seem a little flustered throughout the beginning of the video which was a bit distracting with all heavy breathing and the fidgety, shakey hands. Just relax, you got this 😊
Cheers, yes I know. I just wanted to do it and i tend to speak right by my camera which picks up all my mouth noises of heavy breathing and tutting etc. Im more aware of this now. Ive had loads of people commenting on it! Lol.
@@Cloakfiend still a wonderful video! Keep up the good work, mate
AMAZING tutorial! Thanks for it! You say "Of course you'll want to pop in some eyes." And, yes... of course I want to. 🙂 But how does one do that?
Lol stay tuned ill do more, like the hair as well..
Hello mate, very nice video ! How did you make the eye so real ? You have a 3d model of an eye that you put on the model ?
I just made the eyes in zbrush. Only takes a minute. Just a sphere with two hole cutouts.
AMAZING!
Great job!
Thanks! Much appreciated!
How did you print these heads, any size possible, colour, they're hollow GREAT ! Please let us know the cost too of printing
Ill do a basic setup vid on how i print them. Not that bad at all.4- 6 hour prints on zoom setting.
Great video! one question: You just use video, not stills? then you extract the frames from the video? why not just photographs instead of video? What resolution is the video?
Video is 4k. Its just quicker and you get more frames. But dslr is best.
Also when you take stills you tend not to take shots evenly apart as you would with video. Also if you ask someone to pull a silly face video goes quicker than frames.
Hey, just curious, why do video and extract frames, instead of taking photos?
As i have more choice and i can cover the area quicker than photos and you tend to move less ireatically as well. Photos are fine but what if a few essential ones you thought were ok were, not? With video you also have the option of using different photos from the footage at more even distances apart leading to a better scan.
Maravilloso. saludos!
Cool!! What kind of 3d printer are you using??
Elegoo Mars 2 pro
Great video. I would love to know how to do this. Bravo
Know you know@
Have you tried powdering you models heads? With talcum powder as it should help dissipate reflections also should help pickup hair better.
I ask my subjects to wipe down before i film to minimise sweat. No one gets offended as its required I tell them.
Lots of love
Thank you!
If I want to use this for reversed engineering, I need to include the original size or the required size. How is the that possible with this method?
Thanx
Include an object that you know the scale of or a ruler or something.
Hi cloakfiend, thanks for your video. Any chances to have a link of the 3d print service you are using ??
I print the heads myself. On a mars2pro.
Wait second here… did you take pictures of pierce Morgan to generate that model? Or did you extract it from a video? If it’s the latter, how?
Great video though, could never get good scans with zephyr. I use bellus face app on iPhone and it works great.
I took photos with the canon 5d mkiv. Pulling frames from video not shot for scanning generally wont work unless you are very lucky.
@@Cloakfiend So you just popped over and said, 'mind if I take a couple snaps Pierce?' The model is fantastic mind. So clean and precise
@@vivalamacI took them for a model that was sent into the stratosphere as a spaceman to celebrate the moon landings but I only had fdm at that time. Still came out ok though.
@@Cloakfiend that’s pretty cool though. And yeah the model still turned out great , even on fdm 👍🏻
I tried and tried but failed miserably. The results were so bad I could not 3d print. I was hoping that by now this technology would have progressed but sadly it is still in tge primite stages
Its all about looking out fot the best lighting conditions. And masking. Ill post more tutorials. Having done it so many times ive learnt what works or not, but even i have to do it twice sometimes!
Very nice. Can you use Blender instead?
Sure why not. As long as you can sculpt in it you are good. I used to use maýa but found it too limiting and switched to zbrush for speed and wacom benefits.
Sure.
In sculpt mode, use flatten, smooth or scrape. Don’t set it too hard.
Hello friend, thanks for sharing. Have you figured out how to get gold chrome without electroplating/vacuum metalizing yet?
No not yet. Well not cheaply in small amounts anyway. You can get kits that do it but they arent cheap.
How did you get enough images of pierce morgan to create a 3d model? Cant imagine u doin a 360 on him 😂
Can you use photographs of someone’s face versus having them model for you and having you circle them camera or camera phone in hand?
Not really as the lighting is what makes it work as well. If the lighting is different in each shot it wont work.
How did you get 360 footage of Piers Morgan to scan?
I worked in the same building as him and was asked to for a spot in a programme. I used a canon 5dmk4 for his pics.
Please V7.0 🙏🏻
Im looking now!
'zed brush' is called 'ze brush'😅😅
I say zed you say zee. You dont even want to know how i said adobe.

@@venusprint3d289 yes zephyr its totally free.
@@venusprint3d289 yea but i cant find them i think i may have actually chrown them out.
Has anyone tried using this software with just a video they found online are from a movie
Im having a go at that now and will post my results in the next few days. Its not that simple though as movies are generally heavily graded, backlit and too soft to get decent stills from not to mention the subject needs to stand still. Ill give it a go though!!
Is it only for head scanning or any object? thank you very much Sir..
It can be for anything really. Just use different settings.
Its a video or pictures?
Can i doit with my Rog phone?
can u use ipad for this - to video and draw on?
Dont think so. Mac with zbrush yes.

Hi, what filament have you used in the girl head at the end of your tutorial?
It's all resin. I mixed some florescent pink pigment Into the resin. It's from stuart semple if you want to try, he has loads of weird pigments.
can i know what printer and material you use for printing those heads ?
Sunlu grey resin on a tuned mars2pro. About 3.5hrs each.
What kind of resin printer?
I have a mars2pro that I made all mine on.
How did you extra the images from the movie you made? what software did you use to do that?
