    Thank you so so much!! You are the reason why I'm finally starting to overcome my OCD. 2 years ago I found your videos and was finally able to admit to myself that what I was experiencing was indeed OCD. Your videos have been such a fundamental catalyst and I have been working on myself ever since! So thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I have checking OCD but have been able to overcome many of my compulsions. I am, however, still stuck on studying. I am a sixth year medical student and thus far have been able to pass my exams, but at a very high cost to myself in terms of time and psychological pain (studying becomes an endless cycle of uncertainty and checking!). I was wondering if you could offer any suggestions on the matter, maybe with a new video? This is one of the fields that, despite many attempts, I have not been able to improve.

      well done - there's no reason why you can't treat your own ocd! Not complying with compulsions is VERY hard and also not anywhere near as effective as doing deliberate exposure to your fears so do make sure you are doing that as you will have much more success that way. But, either way, unfortunately you are likely to have to go through some short term pain when doing your ERP but it's worth it for the long term gain.

    Hi Katie. Thanks for the videos, they have been extremely helpful but I was wondering if you could do a video on the number 13 and some strategies for exposures? My obsessional thoughts tell me that doing things for the 'first time' at 13 past, or 1 o'clock means that I will get bad luck every time I do that thing again. (it almost has got to the point where it has become pure O, as there is no compulsion that can fix this). I also have fear of buying things or doing things at 13 past or choosing things that have a 13 on them (like the price of a product, or a shirt that has 13 on it). My OCD has got very creative, so it would be good to hear your thoughts on some exposures to the number 13! thanks.

    • @23katied
      @23katied  2 года назад

      Ok so as with all ERP the guideline is to do it until your levels of discomfort have come down. So if you start playing the recording and you are say 8 out of 10 keep it playing until it is bothering you less - maybe a 3 or 4. It doesn't have to get to a 0! In my experience 5-10 minutes each time is generally enough. Then repeat the exercise daily until it isn't bothering you much when you play it - again doesn't have to be 0..... Generally people I work with might do this for a week or so but as with everything it is different for everyone

    Thank you for this! I've been doing ERP at home using online resources since I can't go for therapy right now and there's no OCD specialist available in my area. I've been bothered and fear that my exposures are too extreme and even people without OCD wouldn't do it. I also fear continuing these exposures as a preference after I get used to them, which is unacceptable because again, I'm afraid they're too much. I feel like going to a therapist would provide me reassurance that my exposures are acceptable as they'd approve of them, as I think my OCD has latched onto this. Do these come under the same category as this video, what can I do about all this?

    • @23katied
      @23katied  2 года назад +6

      When I work with someone who gets reassurance from the fact we have discussed and agreed the exposures together I will get them to plan and do theri own exposures without telling me.... Ultimately if you do it without any reassurance you are going to be far better off in the long run. Feeling like you are taking risks and learning to tolerate the discomfort of this is essential to overcoming ocd.

I just have a few questions as I am obsessing about the method, how often do I think these thoughts on purpose? Should I try spend all day thinking these thoughts? Also what do I do when the physical symptoms come up and the feelings of ocd come up, do I just try not respond to them? A huge obsession of mine is about the treatment itself so I've watched this video, but I still have these questions.

    • @23katied
      @23katied  2 года назад

      So this is tricky to answer as you say you also have an obsession about the treatment so whatever I say is unlikely to give you the reassurance or certainty that your OCD craves. The trick is to take the risk - it's better to get it wrong than worry about getting it right!

    Hi Katie,
    I am struggling with harm ocd and other taboo ocd themes.
    I am really struggling at the moment as you mention in some previous videos about people can have certain ocd themes and there one session be true.
    I saw you comment about someone with hocd and saying they could be gay and ocd doesn’t mean they are not.
    So does this mean my harm thoughts and other ocd thoughts could be true then? This is something I would love to hear from you.
    I have seen multiple therapists who have diagnosed me with extreme ocd and told me it means they aren’t true but you are saying they can be.
    So can people with harm ocd and other ocd taboo themes actually be true then?
    This is what has left me quite distressed at the moment as every book I read and every podcast I listen explain that these thoughts are not true.
    I have worked with multiple therapists who have all said this means it’s not true and have sat Infront of a board of specialists who have said you have ocd and are not these things but in your videos are you saying these taboo thoughts could be real? Really would be good to hear from.

    • @23katied
      @23katied  2 года назад

      Thanks for this question it is very important and I will make a video about it as i realise those comments have confused people - but the answer is this - the thoughts are just thoughts and they don't mean anything. Therefore they don't mean you are something and they don't mean you aren't. When you get told (repeatedly) that these thoughts are "not true" you would think that would solve the problem but it doesn't. The trick is to ACT AS IF you believe they are not true and stop trying to get certainty about the content.

So at the beginning when i started to view the world logically they used say that im wrong and like used to show a lot of emotions and explaining something bad always. At first i used not take notice but later i started to think what if im wrong. Because they always find a bad reason to explain that im wrong and they always like act like they get a heart attack so that's how my ocd started.

    Hi ma'am. I'm recently diagnosed with ocd of perfection by a psychiatrist. Everything in my life is either 0% or 100%. There is no in between. My psychiatrist told me to wait for 2-3 months before consulting any psychologist. But i can't wait.
    Could you please make a video on ERP for ocd of perfection or just give some tips by replying to this comment.

      Hi Seema - yes I will indeed make a video on OCD and perfectionism. In short you can follow all the advice in the videos - firstly work out what it is you fear about doing things not 100%.....

      @@23katied Thank you for replying ma'am. I've watched ALL of your videos in last 2 days. Btw it's a fake id, I'm using my mom's id. I'm a 25 years old male pursuing PhD (mathematics). I'm afraid there is no fear or may be I'm not aware of them.
      MY PROBLEM- NOT ABLE TO STUDY for 5 years EVEN THOUGH I WANT TO.
      HOW IT STARTED - I just love.....yes i LOVE Mathematics since childhood. But in last 5 years first my grades declined slowly and now I'm not able to study at all. Bcz of few years of continuous failures i fear that i won't be able to study maths as i used to. Like you asked what my fear is if don't study 100% is I'll lose my identity, all my teachers, friends relatives knows me as a guy who's brilliant and extraordinary at maths. I will lose my x-factor. I'll lose the thing which made me way better than everyone else in Maths fraternity. Which makes me very stressed and to cope with that stress i indulge my mind in something, like i start watching tv, RUclips or go out and play with my friends, anything expect studying. I still badly wants to study bcz I'll have to start earning money quickly to feed my family but I'm not able to study.
      This is my problem, my obsession to study maths is now my fear/anxiety causing thing. I don't know how to tackle this.
      Please help ma'am. Give me a starting point.
      ADDITIONAL DETAILS- The thing is I got to know I'm suffering from this perfectionism ocd just 1 month ago. Before that i had no idea i was suffering from such ocd. It's now after telling by doctor I'm realising how meticulously i do all my daily chores, studying and basically everything from the time i wake up to the time i sleep. I was doing all things so meticulously Unintentionally. Feels like every minute of my life is under perfectionism's control. After realising I'm able to change my daily chores process easily bcz i've no fears regarding them if i don't do them perfectly. Now i have much more time in my day. But I'm still struggling to study.

    please tell me how to handle this situation... before I even have a thought/feeling/sensation/urge I start to fear the situation which I know may trigger my ocd. And surely then I have the thoughts coz i was already contemplating it. How should I stop fearing the triggers? Whenever am not fearing or preoccupied I find that the same situation doesn't cause any reaction in me. Please help!! My wedding is in a month and i know it's a hugr trigger for me. I don't wanna lose that day to my ocd. I fear that on my wedding day instead of my fiance I'll imagine someone else whom I felt was attractive. My fiance and I have been in a relationship for 14years. I'm from India.

      @23katied  2 года назад

      Well as you know the more you try and make something not happen (or you fear it will happen and therefore create resistance to it) the worse it is. My advice would be to do some deliberate exposures where you imagine yourself walking down the isle and seeing someone else you found attractive instead of your fiance. You need to take the sting out of the idea.

    Do people act on ocd urges under extreme anxiety. I have a friend who has severe ocd and he don't like to touch people but he will move towards people or when someone sits beside him he will move towards them and touch them because he can't keep his body still. Just wondering trying to help him the best I can but don't know alot about ocd. Thanks

      People will perform compulsions when their OCD has been triggered. Hopefully by watching my videos you'll get a good understanding of how OCD works and it would be amazing if you could encourage your friend to watch them too so that they can learn to help themselves as best as possible.

      Hi Dave. An obsession can have any content at all. Work out what you are doing to avoid having this thought or to avoid the possibility of it coming true and then use this as a basis to start working against the OCD.
