When we had the false missile attack alert in Hawaii I remember everyone stopping in their tracks and checking their phones. Then we all looked to the sky and then at each other. @@christinedidur364 Yeah, some cities are pretty much gridlocked 24x7. Hard to imagine anyone getting very far in an evacuation from a place like that. Maybe just grab a bag and start walking, if you can.
This was an outstanding film, the couple made the right decision for them in their situation. The aftermath of nuclear conflict would be hell on earth. Possibly almost certainly some will live through it but not the elderly, we are toast either way. So yes those two were brave and honorable people who made a good choice, for themselves. Thank you for posting this, there are damn few films worth watching and this certainly was one.
Don't listen to the negative reviews from simple minded people. This is a well done, sophisticated movie, with depth of characterization and a message of the power of love.
What would be point of evacuating from nuclear attack? No where would be safe to go. That woman had the best attude and that was to stay in her home with her husband and die there. If my mum was still alive she would be in her 90s by now, we would not of evacuated and stayed in her bungalow and died together there.
Same story here, my Ma would not have left , and all the strength in the world ,would not have dragged me from her ,despite ,what I know ,would have been her protestations to try help myself. Its not bravery ,I think it is peace of mind ,and its not a debt paid either ,but an appreciation and a final choice. I KNOW ,my father ,taken from us years before ,would have known why . If someone doesnt understand it ,doesnt mean they are bad , but they never will.
Depends how far you are from ground Zero. If your house survived intact, and you have food & water for 14 days your chances of survival increase You cannot leave your house until a longer period has elapsed, of course.
Here in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 there would not be anywhere to evacuate to, the country could be completely wiped out by a nuclear strike, not a massive strike, just enough missiles/warheads to destroy all the major population zones and fallout, starvation, no clean water, no medical facilities left and definitely no support from any governmental authority, a total wipeout, unless you happen to have your own fully stocked shelter that could sustain you for a year or more, or you were in government.
Exactly why the UK HMG quietly abandoned civil defense in the 1980s, disbanded the royal observer corps, and briefly passing CD to reserve forces (territorial army) units in the 90s - whose job wasn't to establish structure but to eliminate any survivors not capable of physical labour and therefore a waste of food resources. With the power and type of weapons it was no longer worth the effort
Our family just happened to have a conversation about this a few weeks ago and we all agreed that there would be nowhere to run; and we made the decision to just remain at home and whatever happens, happens. Who knows for sure though?
I've been Prepping since the late 70's. I am retired and my team will be here on the farm when SHTF. Most team members live less than 15 miles from the farm and can use county roads to get here.
If there would be any chance to survive perhaps get to Cemetery Mausoleum that's made of solid stone and concrete. Some of those mausoleum's have stone cavern sections, just a thought or else you can find a special place and wait. Peace Everyone
Exactly, because the government isn't going to tell you what is going on because it doesn't believe that you can handle the adult truth,or know how to react or respond os inevitably it's best to keep you in the dark and feed you more bullshit like the sheeple and mushrooms they believe you to be while they go to ground to protect themselves and to be safe while leaving we the people to face what's happening... They have the dozen or more fully provisioned, hardened underground bunkers paid for with your and my tax dollars to hide themselves and their families in because it's much more important that they, the government survive... 😮
I wish people would talk about nukes more. I wish people feared them more. Our leaders now seem to act tough and fearless like its a game. Back in the day the US and the USSR were more responsible. They always kept communications open. Today i think we might be in trouble.
The USSR did a fairly good job of acting like an actual country. What's in charge in "Russia" now is the gangsters that the USSR had kept suppressed. The only saving grace there is that "Russia" may have actually sold their nuke weapons on the black market for I dunno, heroin and solid gold belt buckles or some shit.
Thought provoking. This movie reminded me of the early 1960s when there was a strong threat of nuclear war. I remember coming home from school and I was young then and so afraid. We had drills in school and in our town. The war sirens were tested frequently. All we heard on the radio and read in the papers were the real possibility of nuclear war. This movie depicts well the conversations I heard between my parents, family and friends.

I live in Norfolk just a mile from the Naval Base...if we ever got attacked here....with a nuclear device......we would be the lucky ones because we wouldn't know what hit us! The living would envy the dead.
@@croiners4166 so very true. Have you ever seen the movie Ladybug ladybug? 2021 - Nice to see the "diversity" of people gathered together and enjoying each other's company - initially, but this scene would be quite rare today, at least for me where I reside. This is what America could & should be, but today we are so polarized. Anyways, there's nothing like a good breakfast & coffee with those you love. Then they can drop the "Big Egg". I had a temporary job assignment to do a 'manual labor' type work at a VA hospital in the mid 1970's. While removing - renovation - originally installed lockers (late 1940's), the workers placed period items behind before installation. Cool. One item was a municipal Civil Defense warning sign that would be posted on the wall. Instructions in case of a 'Nuclear Attack'. Last thing listed: If you see a Bright Flash take cover Immediately. Instead, the world was given another 'Bomb'. The Russian Invasion of the Ukraine. February 24, 2022. Never know; we just might see the "Flash". The most sentimentally, enjoying elements are the interactions between the focused people in the movie pending the ultimate interruption of their lives.
I greatly dislike how stupid and delusional the women are portrayed in this movie. Why are they so unreasonable, so totally without a single logical thought? And why can't they even follow any logical explainations or their husbands' advice? As a woman, mother and grandmother, I wouldn't be anything like these delusional women. And I have already proved to be more thoughtful and logical in bad situations in my past.
People should choose to be who they want to be with.. we don’t all need to marry people of a different race because certain people think skin color mixes is the answer to everything. Let white people marry white people, let black people. Array black people…it’s OK, give it a rest.
You are correct. I just thought the mix at the party was nice to see. I didn't say that was the answer. I dated only with my group; Usually, when I grew up - 50s/70s - Same groups married same groups. Birds of a feather flocked and lays eggs together. 🖕 @@rashone2879

I used to be terrified at the though of WW3, etc. But, then I looked at the big picture and thought of the aftermath, the diseases, the cold, radiation sickness, etc. That is no quality of life to me. So, as Kazim in the movie Indiana Jones said to Indy "My soul is prepared! How's yours?" That's how I live my life and how I will live it in my last moments whether WW3, illness, old age or whatever end I meet.

Wow……. If you ‘shit canned’ this movie because of not special effects ….. no violence…. No gunfire….. no ‘hero’s’…… Then probably you wont be the one helping your neighbour in a crisis or sitting on the sofa content when the inevitable arrives….. I’m on the sofa not fighting you for toilet paper in the super market…. A great movie.
I shitcanned it because it took 23 minutes for the plot to start, because it spent the first 22 minutes on the most clumsy, cringe and bizarre characterization and establishment that I think I’ve ever seen, is that ok
I get the impression the writers possessed a profound dearth of knowledge regarding the history, design and configuration - let alone use - of strategic weapons. It really undercuts the drama. Although the days of multi-MT warheads raining down by the tens of thousands are gone its worth noting that most modern weapons are considerably smaller in the 350-550Kt range and far fewer in number with about 3800 active weapons around the world - down from 70-80k that were active just 40 years ago. Instead of this canned, almost maudlin "after school special" production, I would recommend watching Threads (1984) where +300Mt was dropped on the UK over a course of sixteen hours (and after a realistic spiral from crisis to war).
I remember The Day After. I’ve grown up fascinated by physics and all things nuclear. Ever since from a kid. The more I read and study I realize physics is as much a responsibility as well as the studied laws of nature. We have discovered and been gifted tremendous knowledge. We can choose to do good with it. We can choose to act impulsively and hurt one another. Let’s hope cooler heads prevail and we use responsibly.
Completely irresponsible of this film maker. The couple would have to be very close to ground zero to be mercifully carbonized like they were. Their deaths would likely be slow and horrific. This film trivialized the horrors of nuclear war.
If somebody else said the exact same thing with the elderly couple it kind of reminds me of the cartoon movie as the wind blows.. and that was a disturbing so it was

@@garyturner5739 you know something I will agree.. but what's scary about this ..the bombs that are being made today.. are stronger than the bombs that were dropped on Japan.. we are not talking about just eliminating a city anymore.. the nuclear bombs that are being made today can take out half of a state..nobody will win everyone will die.. that fear alone should keep the Trigger Happy warmongers from actually doing it
This is a clear case of what not to do! The senior couple had a basement, they could have fortified it and been more safe instead of dancing in the living room and being blown to smithereens. As far as the couple who decided to get on the road, my guess is they never made it 20 miles. You can not out run a nuclear attack, stay put and protect yourself from the blast and fallout. Those who live in big cities have less of a chance of survival unless they have access to a bomb shelter because any roads out of the city will be gridlock. I live in the deep south, in a state that has no military installation that would be deemed a target. If you survive what comes afterwards, being in a warmer weather state increases your ability to have water and food that's not contaminated. It's pie in the sky thinking I know, but we have enough sense to know we're at the precipice where anything is possible. BTW, we have guns to protect ourselves from the lawlessness sure to follow when society has been decimated!
Clearly you are young, that couple made the best possible choice at the end of their lives. In that situation and at their age, life would be short and horrific. Something a young couple might live through but for those in their senior years, it simply is not possible. They are examples of brave and honorable people, not to mention in the end we are all going to die, how better in the arms of those you love, at peace with your life. There is no such thing as limited nuclear war, once it starts we will all be back in the stone age, most likely looking at a new ice age. The last time we did that we were a hell of a lot tougher and even then only about 10000 humans lived by the time it was done.

@@swamp5050 You are slightly older than me, I am 68 but we will have to agree to disagree. But perhaps it is possible you do not have clear understanding of what life would be like after a nuclear exchange. I am not sure what choice I would make myself under those circumstances but I certainly understand the context of why this couple choose as they did. What surprises me is that you do not. Would life in pain and with loss of ones dignity really mean that much to you? You need to remember that we are not just talking about the guy but his wife who was disabled. After a strike there will be no medical for anyone especially those of us who are older. I hope neither one of us ever has to face such a choice. I still liked the film and thought it well done, not a typical end of the world film but a very human one.
@@charlescoffey9523 Firstly I'd like to direct you to a couple of movies on YT, Threads and The Divide. I've been through some stuff, the cold War in the 50's where we had weekly drills at school where we had to get under our small wooden desks and put our arms over heads to protect ourselves incase of a nuclear attack. The Soviet Unions threat when President Kennedy and Khrushchev almost came to nuclear blows, the World at the time understood this could have been the end had not Kennedy out maneuvered the Russian. Having survived Hurricanes mud slides fires and so many earthquake's I lost count, plus the worst tornado I've ever experienced and survived last week and still in recovery mode. The moral of my story is I never once gave up on living no matter what it might look like. While nuking the planet would be devastating to recover from preparation is key. It will be a struggle for whatever time is remaining to you, but giving in has never been part of my plan. PPE's, I have two gas masks and extra filters, water purifiers food and all the necessary personal survival equipment. Now at my age it's possible I die of natural causes, but just incase I intend to fight for life till the bitter end. 😎
41:32 I have that EXACT frying pan !! It's ceramic coated and is mostly non-stick and very scratch resistant !! Bought it a second hand store brand new for $5 !!! Best $5 I ever spent.
I live in the uk on the North Norfolk coast, there's a lot of usaf bases really close to me. When the shit hits the fan I'd rather be right under the big boom! Radiation would be a hideous way to die, why can't the world leaders understand there's going to be nothing worth going on for? 😢
In the event of nuclear war, there will be no evacuations, probably no warnings other than maybe state or local level ‘shelter in place’ type stuff. If your area is targeted, there’s no point in going anywhere, or for that matter even worrying about it. I think there will be zero advance warning for this reason. Let it happen, and maybe attempt an after the fact response.
It's selfish to just give up precious life for memories in a house when the memories are in your head anyway. Not to mention, what memories will you have when dead? Husband clearly wanted to leave and hopefully live but chose to just die to please her.
This may be realistic in terms of human reactions and coping. It is not realistic in terms of the actual attack. We will not have anything like this amount of time to mull things over and say our goodbyes. The U.S. and Russia have roughly 6,000 nukes each. If the Launch on Warning doctrine is still in effect (it may or may not be, depending on new or cancelled treaty terms), then the moment our or their sensors detect a launch, we may launch 2,000 nukes immediately. Anyone directly under the detonation will be reduced to his/her component atoms in 1/10,000th of a second ("Sourcebook on Atomic Energy", Samuel Glasstone). The temperature at the heart of the fireball is 10 million degrees Centigrade, the same as the interior of the Sun. Survival is not likely. Make as much noise as you can to stop this madness, if it is still possible.
The atomic boom-banger goes KA-WHAM & we all fry when we die. So long, its been good to know ya. I wanna live forever & die down dead never. Will my scorched, skull wind up being on some Alien's desk thousands of years in the future, having been brought back from some archaeological expedition? They'll say, "Who was this guy & how did he die?". Well, I'm old dead Fred & I fried when I died, Clyde!
If you leave your house, you become an instant refugee. Have some preps. Of course, if you're in the impact zone and you want to live, you'll need to leave.

Threads is very realistic

Completely irresponsible of this film maker. The couple would have to be very close to ground zero to be mercifully carbonized like they were. Their deaths would likely be slow and horrific. This film trivialized the horrors of nuclear war.

Ka-bluey! Maybe we should elect people who won’t bring us closer to midnight on the nuclear clock.
How do you know they had a basement?
Clearly you are young, that couple made the best possible choice at the end of their lives. In that situation and at their age, life would be short and horrific. Something a young couple might live through but for those in their senior years, it simply is not possible. They are examples of brave and honorable people, not to mention in the end we are all going to die, how better in the arms of those you love, at peace with your life. There is no such thing as limited nuclear war, once it starts we will all be back in the stone age, most likely looking at a new ice age. The last time we did that we were a hell of a lot tougher and even then only about 10000 humans lived by the time it was done.

Would life in pain and with loss of ones dignity really mean that much to you? You need to remember that we are not just talking about the guy but his wife who was disabled. After a strike there will be no medical for anyone especially those of us who are older. I hope neither one of us ever has to face such a choice. In the event of nuclear war, there will be no evacuations, probably no warnings other than maybe state or local level ‘shelter in place’ type stuff. If your area is targeted, there’s no point in going anywhere, or for that matter even worrying about it. I think there will be zero advance warning for this reason.
