A homemade costume I used once that won first place was a severed head on a dinnerplate. I used a cardboard box with a hole for my head, then put a cheap tablecloth over it with a paper plate around my head with plastic silverware. Then make your face up with makeup like its gory. Great costume, hard to move around in cars with groups of people lol.
