That's not Ariel. The mermaid doesn't have a name in the original version. She's only called " Little Mermaid ". And yes, she does die. Her body turns into sea foam, but somehow, she gets a spirit and becomes a daughter of the air.
This seems very similar to the Japanese anime version of the Little Mermaid. Almost too similar. Me thinks that maybe this was an attempt to make a live action version of the Japanese animated film.

well both of them are adaptations of the same fairy tale, both are pretty faith full adaptations too (not like the Disney version).
