currently doing a master copy of this entire painting as a senior project in my undergrad FA studies and I’ve been scrambling to find videos to help me expand my concept of technique. i’m so used to using transparency that laying paint on the canvas the way the masters do terrifies me. stumbling across your page earlier today was a godsend. thank you so, so much for these videos!!!
How skillfully you put the expression in the eyes in place. My hands shiver whenever I paint eyes. I loved the attention to minute details and blending of colours to produce the reflected light without compromising on the expression on the face. Marvellous!
A year ago I watched this video..and watching it again today…still so in awe of your talent and it’s been a year of me still struggling to paint portraits. Your videos push me to try harder and keep going with the painting in oils process. Thank you 🙏😌
While I would not call this a poor copy of the original, I think it should be clear to everyone that Velasquez is so incredibly capable that no one can approach his "felt" technique. This is exactly why the word "ineffable" exists. In the end, the best painting is about expressing the inner genius, insights, nuances and emotions of the original artist. This is why the cream always rises to the top. It cannot be simulated.
Velazuez is impressive . I have seen his originals in 'El Prado'(MUST see) and for me he is head and shoulders above his contemporaries. Great job you're doing!
This ainting example of this master-work is so incredible. I am color-blind in the problem areas of red/green, so, I have relate my colors to my knowledge of the grey-scales. I have tried to identify the suble changes in the face, depending on where the lights are, but I have so much left to learn. Thank you, this demonstration is helpful, but the dialog along with it would be helpful. I am attempting to paint an oil portrait of my 4 year old granddaughter, but it isn't going very well. I wish there could be a way of sending an image of my painting so I could receive some valuable help. Thank you for this incredible lesson, MSG Leum
Another fine piece of work my friend, you never cease to amaze me.People seem to always want to know who you are, I think it is better to keep your anonymity, your art speaks of who you are a very talented individual. Good on you:)
Velazquez would have been proud of you. Amazing art. Congratulations. I'm finishing a copy of the infanta Margarita Teresa of the Las Meninas. I wish so much to have found you earlier! I like and sub.
@@olddirtymasters It is finished some time ago and today I varnish it. I'm very happy it looks quite good. Wish I could show it to you. Again, thanks for your incredible beautiful work and tuition. ❤

I think it's a very good study copy. Although I don't know if you're trying to reproduce Velazquez's technique. If so, you shouldn't paint "physically" all the colours you see in the painting. Many of the tones you see are only optical colours, the result of the mastery with which Velazquez superimposed and worked the layers of paint.
I strongly disagree with "coloring in" with a very small brush like this. Surely that is antithetical to how the Masters painted. --- and--- who paints with gloves on?????
@@verydrunkcat Cuts on hands?? Look, if you are that afraid of working with pigments that have been used for thousands of years, then just don't use them! In my view, many current "artists" are trying too hard to have it both ways. They want to pretend to be artists in the time-honored traditions, but they are careful to wear plastic gloves all the while. It's all just so silly. I am not impressed with ANY such artists, by the way. Just look at the final outcome: their paintings!
@@KpxUrz5745 I did not see technique in this copy, only coloring. The only merit was mixing the colors before. But it is too far from being a master copy, it could be a copy, but you can never imitate Velazquez's technique, you can never imitate his brushstroke. This can only be called a studio, but to say that it is a master copy is too pretentious. Titian's Adam and Eve is an impressive work and Rubens himself made a study and master copy of that painting, and that is really a master copy.
