- A study after Sargent's portrait of John Ridgely Carter. This portrait interested me because of the range of skin tones that create the forms of the head. I wasn't quite able to get the effect but it was fun trying to search for all the various hues in the original. Thanks for watching and please subscribe and share if you enjoyed the video.

Materials I used:
Linen with acrylic primer, walnut oil, liquin, Oil colors (titanium white, lead white, cadmium yelllow light and med, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, burnt umber, ivory black, chrome oxide green, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue), Nylon, bristle and sable brushes, Кино
This was incredibly helpful, I wish there had been a voice with it, describing the procedure. I have been a soldier for 30 years, now disabled from combat, along with my 31-year professions of Art Therapy and teaching public school art. I have always needed extra help in my paintings, struggling to work with colors and values since I am color-blind. My redgreen range color-blindness has always caused me problems. Thank you for your incredible teaching videos,
MSG Leum
Actually Sargent did not accept that he was impressionist, but to tell the truth he was a magician.
As a portrait artist,i learned more from studying Sargent than any other artist.Great video.
What I would give too just sit and quietly watch you paint.
It would be incredible.
Like seeing an exciting concert in person.
Amazing copy
Absolutely stunning. I see you went with the creative interpretation instead of the boring photo.
So beautifully rendered... thank you for sharing
Bravo!!! Thank you for the excellent demo. I particularly enjoyed the loose brushwork in the beginning. So impressive!
Interesting project. The flow of the work was very instructive.
Bro… I didn’t think you were going to make it. Mad technique!
Thank you for sharing your technique, it has taught me so much.
Outstanding - thank you so much, I learned so much watching your courage in changing the eyeball that seemed perfect before you changed it! But was, of course, more perfect after.
Thank you w brown, glad you enjoyed it:)
Unbelievably good!
I just found your channel, this is great, thank you!
Thanks Kathleen:)
Fabulous!!!
Your color mixing skills are top notch. This would be really difficult to impossible to pull off without them. I have a long way to go to get to that level of color mixing ability. Right now, I'm getting fairly comfortable with the Zorn palette. Keeping it simple for now. Kudos! 👍
Beautiful....thank you 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you!
Truly appreciate 🙏, it's awesome
thank you for sharing this.
I have been watching and learning using RUclips for three years now and I have to say, this is awesome, best ever video for aspiring artist, actually anyone who is passionate about the craft !!!

Garret
So glad you enjoyed it, thanks Garret!
Your knowledge and confidence is outstanding. 👍
This is one of the BEST video for art, it could be number one if your can add your voice with instructions.
Thank you so much for sharing 😍😍
This so amazing, I have so much to learn, beginning with internalizing the understanding and utilization of the planes in the face and the lights' impact on the value changes, and thank you,
MSG Leum
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing, a very complicated portrait. Especially the Nose area
You did the best copy of seen of Sargent on the web. Thank you. Learning a lot from watching.
Thanks for watching DL Tuna. Best of luck to you in your work.
Great!! Starting with no sketch takes real confidence. John Singer Sargent is the best of the best. You captured it
This is really helpful, thank you.
Perfect work. The way you saved it midway, whether intended or not. But thr last few details were amazing on thr eyes well done. Going I'm without a pencil also pretty brave. Beautiful singer copy. I can one yesterday ans looked nothing like the original. This is very very close
Very edifying. thanks.

Ha, love the channel name...a shoutout to ODB
You are such a badass.
Great work 🙌
Replace the small brush work with a bigger brush and envoke bruvera.
Wow! What an awesome painting. Would you mind posting the links to the brushes you use? I need to buy some good quality brushes without breaking the bank and I was hoping I could take a look at what you use. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us.
Thanks again:)These brushes did nearly bankrupt me so I can’t recommend them haha. Any brushes that aren’t the absolute cheapest will work well in my experience.
Well done. I bet if you continued refining your work, you'd get even closer to the original.
Fantastic! I love it! Can I ask how long that took in real time? Are you on Instagram?
Thanks Beth B:) This painting took about three weeks- kind of lost track. Just yootub right now.
Amazing work. Do you use odourless mineral spirits at the start to make it loose or lots of linseed oil?
I meant during the block in stage do you use mineral spirits or linseed oil?
Yes mineral spirits.
Nice demo... what is the use of lead white in the portrait... Please 🙏
Thanks. Lead white dries a little quicker and tints colors less than titanium. Not necessary but sometimes is a good option.
Sorry for my English .
I just would like to know how long did you take for painting this great copy.
Thank you very much for this demonstration.
A French admirer of your talent
Thank you Marc. If I remember correctly this copy took about three or four weeks.
fun watch , thanks fellow painter. are you on ig ? i spent most of my time there
Thank you:) Just yt at the moment.
Would be nice if you could tell us what colours you used
Colors listed in the description.
@@olddirtymasters , Thanks
Could you put your comments in a colour, not white. Very hard to see. Wonderful work!
Wheres the vernon lee?
Surely if you used a smaller brush in certain areas you wouldn’t have to keep making corrections
Great likeness, early on it could've gone all Freddie Mercury.
Thanks, felt under pressure to get it somewhat right.
@@olddirtymasters yeah amazing , alla prima is a gift when you can master that , looks like you're in the forgers class . The highest compliment I can pay an artist .
Aproximacion del 90%
Un pintor con guantes?
Si. Y poi que no? Muchos los usan para no contaminarse con los productos nocivos de algunas pinturas.
This is amazing video ! But can you add music next video ,please🙏
please the time lapse versions really suck, some of us actually have the ability to watch you paint this thing for 5 hours, looking at the beauty of stroke by stroke. could you kindly consider people like me next time
Can I suggest to add some music to make the video more relaxing?
Dry painting, no med.
“Master copy”? Cmon that’s a bit self-inflating, doncha think?
Not bad, but still a long way from a copy. deceptive title.
They say that Sargent dearly loved the song "Despacito", and used to hum it often while he painted.
The Mexican song 'Despacito' made famous by Pedro Infante?
@@TessMArt the very same.
Que dominio de la técnica y la proporción!!! Siempre es un gran placer velo pintar Maestro! 👏👏👏
