The magnificent John Singer Sargent. I truly love his works. But as an artist myself, I also deeply appreciate and equally admire our contemporary artists... who inspire us to improve our own individual skills!!
First of all, let me congratulate you for having become such an exceptional painter. Thank you for the close ups. Seeing how you masterfully applied that paint is simply priceless for me. I am sure your channel will grow. I just subscribed to your channel and I will make sure I let my painter friends know about a newly discover gem in RUclips, you.
At 3:18 I would have cursed my lack of skill and given up! How you refine and adjust to the beautiful finished painting is what I need to persist with! Thank you.
Wonderful painting of Lady Agnew- an excellent job. What I have observed from this study is that there is multiple layers . For example on the light side you added it’s reds on cheek area and on second layer yellow hue. Interesting and I learned from this. Thank you for this . 😊
An admirable copy of Sargent's Lady Agnew, although I've always felt that the brushwork of the patterning of fashions, dresses, ornamentation and background in general was so integral to his painting and for me some of the most pleasing aspects of his work.
Great painting exercise. It's so much joy watching while you paint. I think you have deliberately reduced some shining on her forehead and below right eye. It looks better. You are a real gem..
You are a truly gifted, amazing and brilliant artist, I loved watching you precision and accuracy when first outlining face, I learnt so much from watching you, and thank you so much for letting us see how true artists work.
while painting its quite hard to understand values but as an audience its pretty noticible to our eyes. Sargent had that skill to be perfect in his values during his painting thus he's famous master artist till now
I doubt that. Probably a liquin or any other alkyd type resin. Don’t paint over established layers with mineral spirits. You’ll destroy the delicate paint film.
@@olddirtymasters awesome. 🙏..I tried another today and although my measurements were off, I learned alot from your technique. Looking forward to more!!
Two weeks? How did you manage to keep the paint wet? When I paint in oils, the paint is practically dry the very next day! Then again, I live in Arizona.... But still. You use something that slows the drying?
@@RobertF- quick block in with general planes and no blending between those planes allowed. He went then start subdivision into smaller planes. Finally he with put on his finishing last strokes. Keep in mind that he painted thickly and if anything went awry, he would scrape it away and start fresh.

@@richardoakley6560 Did you learn this from the tutorial from the man who copied this piece also in a 2-3 hour long video? He goes step by step through an estimation of Sargents process painting this one but full size
Hey thanks DW! All the portraits have been challenging for me especially Rembrandt’s self portrait more so because I had visited the actual painting recently and could see how far away I was from its remarkable qualities.
Mind blowing. A delight. Wonderful. Congratulations on your talent and achievement. I think you can safely add 'Master' to your title/name. Thank you so much for sharing your videos!! I'll be sharing the channel. Can I ask what reference you use and how it was printed?
Thanks Samantha! The National Galleries of Scotland’s site has an image that I printed on a laser printer. I couldn’t get the color to print the way I wanted it but went for it anyway.
"Let the mistery be, perhaps?" I would like to know the master behind these amazing videos too,but at the same time I understand the escence of these channel. I love it.
I think you got a good likeness of the printed source. This doesn’t show how Sargent had to translate nature’s range of light/shadow into the materials that he used -pigments range of values/colors on canvas. This exercise is good for training the artists eyes for shapes, colors, and values within a limited range. But please put the disclaimer for students not to expect to match nature’s range when they actually attempt a portrait from life. You must learn to translate and subordinate nature’s range… and that is what Sargent was a master of doing!
I like what you say about shapes but I don't think a pencil and eraser are the correct tools to demonstrate the idea. Newsprint and soft vine charcoal is a better way to learn about shapes.
Why copy it at all? Do your own. Even if it were possible to paint like Sargent, achieving this would only make you his minor. Most artists give up copying as early as they can so they can begin to paint like themselves, which is the only skill worth the trouble it takes to get. Sargent is long dead. Let him be.

Your years of experience shines through on each and every work. Not only is it fascinating to watch ,it’s just plain fun as well. Thank you.
Thank you Jimmy! Glad you enjoyed this one.
John Singer Sargent, one of the classiest painters ever. His drawings are wonderful too.
This painting is about 10 minutes walk from my house and I have seen it many times, it is such a wonderful work of art.
Isn’t it in Scotland?
@@Bradwelbornfineart Yes, it is in the National Gallery in Edinburgh.
@@RealmsOfThePossible Lucky. I went to see it yesterday at the gallery....took lots of photos to do my study of it. :-)
@@RealmsOfThePossible Homie, you just ratted yourself out. I'm on my way to Scotland to throw eggs at your dog.
Great reason to visit Scotland.
Beautifully master copied - brilliant gaudging of tonal values across the face.
One of the best art channels

This is PAINTING. Wonderful. Beautiful strokes. Almost as good as Sargent himself
This blew my mind! You could be a master yourself!
Learned a lot enjoyed seeing the different brushes you used.

I did one of these too! - It's an excellent exercise.
Saw you on Stephen Baumans’ live stream. I knew who you were even if he didn’t.
Love your content.
Cheers Richard Oakley:) I’m really enjoying his videos. Such a generous and thoughtful teacher.
You realy destroy all the romantic ilusions that the people have about "artists" and "art". From Brazil greetings. Keep painting in 2022!!!!!

I like it very much.
Fantastic work, like watching a sculpture being made
Espectacular 👏👏

hey, this is wonderful, around 5:20, when you were doing the middtones, how did you thin those? with mineral spirits?

Sargent did not use medium..paint out of the tube
just incredible. I wish you had a patreon teaching channel? I'd def love to learn your techniques ❤

Linseed oil

The likeness in features seems better than others i have obviously colors are diff to original
Jhon felicitaciones eres genial un saludo de aca de colombia
U may have used a zorn palette + cadmium Yellow 2 get the skin tone glow like Sargent? I learned from demo. Thanks
I love your videos. I’m inspired to give this a try. I have a question. Was this all done in one sitting, wet on wet?
Thank you:) This was my third attempt and took about two weeks -so not all wet on wet.
The whole time I kept screaming at the screen “…that’s not how Sargent would of done it!” hehe but that’s ok 🎨 👍
How would Sargent have painted this differently?
