  • After about eight years, our Dappled Willow, Salix integra 'Hakuro Nishiki', finally died back after a harsh winter. This video shows the process of rejuvenating our willow, what to expect going forward, and whether or not the dieback was a blessing in disguise.

I just planted 5 dappled willow last year (Idaho zone 7). All are healthy so far. Can't wait to see how they do this year. Thanks for the great information!

My Nishiki is a beautiful white and pink color right now. Very little snow here this past winter in the southern metro of St. Paul, Minnesota. for us too. The rabbits and deer both snacked on my 3 year old Nishiki earlier this spring, but luckily it has recovered. Have had to completely cover it and most of my other shrubs with deer netting though and spray with liquid fence to prevent any more damage from the herds of suburban deer and colonies of bunnies.

Informative video, thank you. I had a dappled willow in southern Ontario garden and it grew 5 feet the first year I planted it, gorgeous shrub, so graceful and colourful. I planted two dappled willows here in southern Nova Scotia three years ago. Hardly grown at all, a few inches only on each shrub and the deers eat every leaf, bud and branch. I’ve planted several willows of differing species here and none have grown more than 6 inches in three years. Can’t figure out why, zone 6 here, plenty of rain too. Fenced off the willows, pussy Willow, curly willow, golden willow, dappled willow, arctic blue Willow, laurel leaf willow to protect from deers and only a few inches of growth each year. Slow growing shrubs in this region. Planted a pussy Willow in central alberta one spring and it grew to 8 feet high in two summers.
