My mom met both the Shah and Soraya in Düsseldorf, Germany, back in the 50’s. I still have a picture card of the Shah and Soraya that they gave to my mom. She was working as a chambermaid in the Breitenbacher Hof. My mom had only good things to say about the two of them. On the last day of their stay they gave my mom a giant bouquet of flowers and a bottle of perfume as thank you gifts. Thank you for posting this little know piece of history. After the divorce she went back to her parents in Koeln. And I believe they both actually truly did love each other regardless of the wife to whom he was married afterwards. And I could have sworn he visited her in Germany quite often. Soraya was beautiful, classy and elegant until her last day. He was actually a good looking chap until the end as well. What a shame that a male-chauvinistic culture can cause so much heartbreak.
The Breidenbacher Hof could do with the glamour and the good service of those days. Dozens of untrained students work there nowadays

@@tartaninka Not just the Breidenbacher Hof has untrained staff working there. It's a world wide problem. It's in the USA, Germany and Denmark that I know of. I suspect part of the problem could possibly be the pay is not what some might think it should be, another part could be it's difficult to find good people (someone who WANTS to work and learn) and then there is the real other issue that it is actually difficult to FIND people. So no telling which it is.

True, and it wasn't even mentioned. That would have been a good time point to anchor parts of the story to. Instead, we jump from after the revolution, to a point before the Shah comes to power, as if they happened in sequence! Wow.
Yes you are correct friend. All I know is that in my.lifetime, when Shah was in Office, it was a safe place for visitors. In fact, so safe that, during WW2, Winston Churchill and other allied leaders signed an agreement there. A contingent of the British Army accompanied him. My father was one of them. We have his photographs as proof. Historians will know of this but dad told my son of the details. I was only interested in geographical details and culture. But the Shah did warn, and pleaded not to be deposed or Persia as it was, would implode. He was deposed as you know and when the Ayatollah took office, dad was very saddened to see the change. And the enmity that wasn't there before. Its an excellent study for a young historian. But, even months ago, I never thought I would see its womenfolk become rebellious for their freedom. Much could be said but not here. Awful that Israelis are so hated by some of that country too, preventing peace out there.

Princess Fawzia was beautiful.
She reminds me of Ingrid Bergman. Also the Iranian royal family maybe very patriarchal and difficult for an outsider to live with them but at least unlike most of the other royal families in the Middle East, they allowed their women to be seen in the public looking glamorous and allowed them to have a voice. You would never hear about the women of all the kingdoms of the Middle East except Jordanian royals.

A couple have mentioned Ava Gardner but to me Ingrid Bergman was the first name to come to mind as well, esp Soraya’s shape of the face.
The narrator's voice and intonation was so well suited to read/voice the story. I usually don't have patience watching videos until the end because of bad narration but this one was exceptional. 👍🏻

Absolutely true. I had a favorite Narrator on a television show. She had a gift for powerful storytelling. Once she left, the new Narrator is not very good and I have trouble staying engaged.

I have read other stories on her and never heard all this negative view before. I do not know where it comes for and doubt it is true. The whole story is a negative view of someone who is not here to defend herself. Other stories on her have all been positive. 🤔

This is a true love story, separated because she can't have a child and when he is dying both of them were longing to see each other for one last time sad but they get to tell each other for the last time they still love each a great love story thanks for the story. 🙏🇨🇦🌟
The narrator was a unique story teller, with candid but with kindness and understanding, especially for this love between the shah and his second queen. There are times when love between two people just doeesn't die, regardless of being involved with other people.❤❤😌😌

As a story yes you are right. But, he was supposed to tell a historical fact that is very important to us the Iranian people. But, this guy does not provide any references for his claims.

The narrator was good Noree but comparing the contents with Wikipaedia, it's not strictly true. Really advise you to read the Wiki account. Lots of discrepancies. She was goaded by his family on regular basis and by Shah's Secretary of sorts who was homosexual and hated women, especially Soraya. Hmm His 'suggestions' made her see red. So would account for that 'temper'.

I watched this story, because I have a gold coin with the Shah on it. He had come to visit my family in Ohio. The Shah’s right hand man gave the coin to my grandmother for her generous hospitality. Then you showed the picture of Edward VII and Wallis Simpson, they also visited my family and I have a picture of them. My family were like the Rockefeller’s of Ohio. I am not like a Rockefeller, I’m normal, but have some fun stories and pictures.

I live in Ohio! Thats a great story! I remember in high school there were many Iranian students here. I live near Ohio Wesleyan University. Such polite young men the few i met. My best friend was a host family for 3 such young men. Their names? Reza, Reza and Hussein. They taught us to play backgammon, and I still play avidly to this day.
I may have an idea of your name, but I will never tell?? LOL. I liked that you said you were normal, most of us in Ohio are pretty down to earth. I can only imagine what an honor it was to meet him, so dashing and handsome.
Then came the "revolution" and alas, such a sad, sad ending to that time period! . No new friends, or old, from that country across the seas.

I am almost 80 years old and while it was tragic that Soraya was divorced because she was barren, I remember the reign of Empress Farah Diva Pahlavi well. I greatly admired her authentic and tireless work for the poor and needy, for social justice, education and women's rights. She was greatly loved by the common people whose standards of living were greatly improved. Despite all the propaganda one reads, the Shah was very forward thinking and cared about his people, fully supporting his wife's efforts. Schools and hospitals were established and thrived under their rule and it was the insidious rise of Islam which undermined the monarchy. Yes - an indulgent lifestyle was very evident and seen by many as excessive. However, one just needs to look at the British people's joyful participation in Royal events to see evidence that the public generally love the pomp and splendour associated with belonging to a monarchy.

In contrast, Soraya wasn't really a social worker or anything of that sort. In fact, she often complained that she had to go to poor areas and meet with poor people and help them. She was quite spoilt and borderline racist to the Iranian people despite being half Iranian. Because of her European upbringing

Soraya was only a Queen. The ONLY EMPRESS of Iran was the Shah's last wife, the ONLY wife to give the Shah his male heir Crown Prince Reza and that is Farah Diba or more correctly, the Empress Farah Diba Pahlavi, the Shahbanou Farah Diba Pahlavi.

I saw the Shah on his state visit to Dacca, East Pakistan (Bangladesh) in 1970. I also read autobiography of Princess Suraya translated in Bangla. "When I was Queen". So beautiful. So sad. In 1979 I returned to Dhaka after engineering study in Canada. And I met a girl. Her father's side was French. Mother's side Punjabi. I couldn't sleep at night. Her eyes and nose exactly like Suraya.

Farah Deeba came to Pakistan and our school girls welcomed her with a show . I was part of that group of little girls from Queen Mary School Lahore . We were fascinated by the Shah and his queen.
My grandmother met the ex-Empress Soraya and said she was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen.

My father in law had the privilege of knowing the shah and Soraya in person, when he was stationed in Iran in the fifties, on request of the dutch government. We still have the unique pictures from those days.

I read that Soraya, 69, was found by her maid, dead on the floor of her Apartment's bedroom. Apparently a massive brain hemorrhage was the cause of Soraya's death.😔🌹

Must have had an aneurysm. She would have complained about headaches on a regular basis without getting much relief from analgesics. It was a quick and sudden way to go.
Up to about 40% of the population have aneurysms and don't know it, unless it is found by coincidence on an x-ray. There are no symptoms while they are small, but they eventually can get quite large before they are noticed. Often runs in families.

Vanity, it’s all vanity under the Sun ☀️. What an absolute waste of energy and planning for the Shah to have an heir for the throne. He and Soraya loved each other very much, but divorced because she was barren. So, he married Farah, she gave him heirs for the throne, but what throne? All of his efforts went to waste, he was a good man, he truly loved his country and his people, he even told a reporter in the early 70s… “…I can try to forgive you if you hurt my family, but if you hurt my country and people that I will not forgive.” A highly intelligent and educated man who spoke three or four languages in full. These savage Muslims dethroned him and he died very young from cancer at the age 60. Before leaving Iran, he took with him a container full of Iranian soil/earth with him, because he loved his country so much. You don't realize what you have until you lose it for good and you should have cherished it. His son for the past 45 years has tried to gain his rightful place as the next King, but this will never happen. Iran 🇮🇷 will never be allowed to regain its glory again, these savages will never allow it. So heartbreaking, the Shah was too good for his people, they didn’t deserve to have such a wonderful leader for a king 👑. I remember so clearly that people were jumping up and down when the Shah left, they were so happy, but shortly afterwards they were hit with a very rude awakening, the liberty and freedom they were promised by the Islamic government became their worst nightmare. The Shah was turning Iran into the paradise of the Middle East, but the Iranian Muslims don't like freedom and liberty as they say they do, their version of liberty and freedom is totalitarianism, and so they got what they wanted, the Shah was too good for them, he wasn't savage enough. Be careful what you wish for, spitting in the wind can blow back to your face. At the end it’s all vanity of vanities under the Sun ☀️, it’s all meaningless, no good deed goes unpunished. RIP Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, your people didn't deserve what they had in you, too much of a good thing like prosperity, safety, and freedom was sacrilege to them. He was so trusted and it was a safe place for these leaders. My inscrutable dad had only praise for the Shah but of course dad saw the poverty, which seemed to be the norm after India.
The Orthodox Muslims wanted power. After the war, in the 50s, the Shah and Empress stopped off in London (having been for fertility tests USA) where they dined with the Queen Prince Philip, Sir Winston and others of note. Very westernised in many things.

So is Fawzia mixed up with Soraya re mood swings? Mum used to say,'what was she like'. Dad would smilingly reply, 'a beautiful Empress'. He wouldn't know personally of course but she was discussed alot. But dad would never be drawn on things mum wanted to know. So she often told me to ask him . 🤣🤣🤣 a child of about 11 or 12. Dad puffed on his pipe and chuckled cos I always started by saying,'mum says.......

@arnoeeuwigheid4499 I've read that too. But she was goaded and insulted on a daily basis by Shah's mother and family. Plus the Shah's private secretary who was Swiss, was a homosexual and disliked Soraya. He was impertinent enough to ask her questions about her sex life. Then she flew into rages and ordered him out. So would I have done with a heavy inkwell following him. She had no back up which angered her. And poverty of many upset her.
Fawzia was NEVER known in Egypt as having mood swings, Fawzia was just depressed about being married to the Shah.
