Making a Very Different Type of Feather Board - Woodworking

  • Опубликовано: 2 янв 2021
  • The top of my saw is plastic, so magnets don't work and the plastic is very slippery, so nothing locks in the miter slot. Instead I made this very uncommon type of "feather board" to keep the stock against the fence when needed.

I am a legally blind wood worker and this idea excites me a lot for the safety factor. I will have to reinvent it a little for my use, but the possibilities are quite exciting to me.

The spring part of the featherboard is pure genius! Makes me wonder what will "spring" from the mind of John Heisz next !! (see what I did there? lol) Thanks for the video, John !

Neat Idea. My Table Saw has an Aluminium Table Top, so no Magnet Feather boards there....this should do!

I know it makes less sense and more work to do it this way, but if you had made the feather board look more like a mini table saw fence that looked like yours, that would have been pretty cool looking. Not to mention kind of funny. Love the videos! and Love the way your mind works! Keep it up!

This looks very ingenious. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking for a solution to slice of some old flooring boards (appr. 16 x 2.5 x 1 inch)
The (former) bottom part of each flooring board is "polluted" with a mix of glue and or cement. it's "not possible" to sand it down that would take ages.
i didn't find a chemical way to get rid of it. So the only way to have usable (but thinner) boards is to slice away the bottom part.
The flooring boards have tongue and groove. The (former! top part is lacquered, smooth and straight. That side should be placed against the fence.
The groove side should stand on the table top. I can't flip it unless I cut of the tongue, which is extra work. Maybe.

Very nice! This would be a good solution for my DeWalt jobsite tablesaw(aluminum top). I wonder if the spring/material guide portion were made to where the plastic was against the material it wouldn't need the slippery tape, as the plastic itself is slippery. Just a thought.
I did like the "thumb thing". I imagined wooden gloves or mittens even. Purely for the silly factor.
    I love your channel(s)!

I thought the narrowness of the prop rod would allow it to flex more than it does. If bending ever exhibited as a problem, you could add something to engage that miter slot. Even a friction fit, half-lap piece would "brace" the whole apparatus in that miter slot.

    • @JohnHeisz

You are overthinking it / solving problems that don't exist. Hardwood this thickness doesn't bend easily.

I would probably use something similar to a normal featherboard for the "feather" part, just to get the added benefit of the anti-kickback that this otherwise nice contraption lacks.
Good idea though, even though I don't think it would work with the aluminium table of my Dewalt DW745 Type 4. :)

Just thinking of a modification to this, adding a ruler to the arm referencing the left side of the blade, with a fine adjustment window, would allow for quick thin strip setups.
