    I have been thinking for some time as to how to set up a feather board quickly and securely. John has solved it for me. The idea is adaptable to my saw and most any saw. Brilliant! Thanks John.
    On hindsight, why has someone not thought of this before now. Well, after a genius figures it out, it looks so obvious.

    You've made a lot of useful things. This is close to the simplest, but may be the best. It's now so obvious that a feather board needs adjustment only side to side, but you'd not know that from looking at other designs.

    This is brilliant! Can't believe no one did this before. Leave it to John and his genius to make something so useful that capitalizes on the existing fence rail for positioning and support. Hi John!
    It's an awesome project and a very useful tool. I would like to suggest a small modification.
    I saw you put the feather board on your piece of wood you wanted to use then move it a little bit so the feathers would compress.
    What if, the first feather, closest to you, was shorter, just enough so when you put that one against the work piece, the other feathers would compress when running the work piece.
    All in one go, no double adjustments.

  • @vferdman
    @vferdman 3 года назад

    I bought the plans for the fence system to give an old DeWalt saw I had with a broken fence system another lease on life. Plans are excellent! The systems is serviceable, but it does have a fair amount of flexibility at the end opposite the rail. I am talking at least 0.25" or more. When using it properly it works ok, but if pressing against the fence with any force (which you shouldn't) it will deflect a bit toward the end of the cut. I built this for a friend who will use it as a weekend warrior home improvement tool. I warned him about the deflection and taught him how to make the cuts properly. But there must be a warning that this fence does have that flaw in it. It is not as rigid as a steel Biesemeyer fence. But it did bring the old DeWalt back to duty and will probably enable a project or two in a home. I wonder if I did something wrong in a the build or it's just a design flaw, but the flex is there. Plans were flawless, however and I have no regrets at all. My plywood was 15/32" instead of full 1/2", BTW. I don't think that made a difference, though.

    • @JohnHeisz
      @JohnHeisz  3 года назад +1

      All fences that lock on the front rail only flex. All of them.
      If you build it and use it properly, the flex isn't an issue at all.

    • @vferdman
      @vferdman 3 года назад

      @@JohnHeisz In theory, you are correct, but the the difference of the steel rail system like Biesemeyer (I have one on my old Craftsman saw) and this plywood one is significant. I can not deflect the Biesemeyer hard as I try. Though if I got sensitive enough instruments, I could probably measure the deflection on that also. The plywood fence deflects at least a 0.25" with my left pinkie, though. I agree, it is not much of an issue if the operator is aware of it. Inexperienced and unaware user may have issues.

    • @JohnHeisz
      @JohnHeisz  3 года назад +1

      Not in "theory", in reality. They all move. If mine moved by an excessive amount, I'd stop using it and stop selling the plans - period.
      Only someone who has put mine together improperly or with junk material will have flex that's unacceptable. If yours is moving that much with your pinkie (unless you are Mr. Universe or something), that would be you.

    • @vferdman
      @vferdman 3 года назад

      @@JohnHeisz I used good materials (15/32" instead of 1/2", but I don't think that would matter much) and I put it together very well. It works, but it deflects id pushed on with any force. In any case, now you have a data point from a build other than yours. Do what you will with it. I still enjoyed building it and I consider it fully functional with caveat. I think my friend will get good use out of the saw and I think that saw has a better fence now than the one from the factory (rack and pinion DeWalt design is not that great).
