- Céline Dion sings "Memory" from the well-known "Cats" in 1987. (It's a bliss this excellent performance was saved in such a good audio and video quality!)
The then 19-year-old future star showed up to the popular TV show, 'L’autobus du Show Business' and though she couldn’t speak a word of English at the time, she still managed to memorize English songs simply by the phonetical sounds of each word. And when you see her heartbreaking performance with the knowledge that she doesn’t even understand exactly what she’s saying, it makes it even more powerful.
Dressed up as the beautiful Grizabella from the mega-popular Broadway hit, Céline Dion manages to tell the whole story while completely nailing the difficult vocals of this intense song.

This was a magical performance. Such purity and clarity. It's a shame people are comparing this vhs camcord quality recording to professionally recorded versions. I cannot imagine how immense the resonance would have been. Also keep in mind she was only 19 years old!
Actually, this type of old recording enhances and exaggerates the resonance. Nowadays it would sound less resonant...but still a lot of course. It's Celine we're talking about, after all. :D

As a french-Canadian like Celine (Quebec RULES)... I feel that, in her voice, she was already 'ready' to take on the whole world, disregarding the accent; Emotions says it all!
I don't know why everyone has to be so salty. I like this version, as well as Streisand's. They have very different singing styles, yes, but Celine did very well, especially considering the fact that she couldn't speak English at the time. Most of y'all being petty probably couldn't hold a candle to Celine, or even Babs for that matter.

The people on here that are salty and dissing her performance clearly don’t know what singing is... Celiné always makes every song her own in many different ways. Look at A Change Gonna Come. She sang it in a very similar style as Aretha but she still put a celine spin on it that made it hers. She wasn’t trying to be Aretha. And she isn’t trying to be anyone else here either. She is singing a song that has been sung by a lot of singers but she is singing it like Celine. Just as Streisand sung it. It’s not her originally. But she did a damn good job too!! But it was Barbara. She wasn’t trying to be anyone else.
So for whatever reasons that people respond negatively, I don’t understand. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion and what brings them happiness.

3:28 it's cool to hear how much singing lessons helped her tone fill out. Her voice got super thin when she did that high run but then a few years later when she would do high runs like that, the tone stayed much thicker.
razrv3lc I think it was the other way around, here it might have been a little throaty but later it became just nasal. Way better technique here, her larynx sounds neutral if not low, where by 1991 it always sounded high
I think also she was 18, years later in her 20's she sounded stronger because ur voice matures also. So that plays a a factor.

That was actually part of how you should sing the song. Cuz you have to remember the character is old and she's looking back on her life and remembering the good old days. Most people who played this part are older women. So the way the notes are song You're supposed to lay on the ends to make them sound sad period which is not easy to do well. And she did it awesomely.

Give her a break. She didn't even speak English in 1987. This was phonetically performed, just like everything else that she did in English at this point in time. That just means she did it by memorizing the sounds of the words rather than really understanding what she was singing.

Maybe I’m just married to the original & the climactic part of it & that’s where I personally feel she didn’t execute the song properly. Have you heard of Betty Buckley’s performance to this song ? Omg it’s absolutely gorgeous, especially the climax of the song, she sings it so effortlessly.
I personally really love the climax change in this rendition. Although the original arrangement is perfect I feel this puts a nice spin on it

She sounds great, but she's focusing so much on making it sound good that she lacks the emotion that has made me attached to this song for so many years. Still a nice version.
She's focusing on getting the words right. She didn't speak English at this time. This was most likely done phonetically, just like everything else English that she did at this point.

The best literally, I don’t get the hate. Yes she oversang it, but it was superior to the original in my opinion, she did it as original shoud be.
Celine's voice is beyond question beautiful. But this is a perfect example of the difference between a singer who is not primarily an actor singing a song in her own style (however good it is) vs. an actor who sings the song within the parameters of the character she is playing. This was Celine's Dion's rendition of "Memory," but it wasn't Grizabella's.
I'm not convinced Celine understands what happiness is.

It’s all about interpretation, and Celine gave the best one by putting emphasis on the different emotions required for this song. She started with a soft tone but ended up belting the end which in my opinion gave justice to what the song was about. The play focused on the cat giving in to her fate and was more of a reminisce on the kind of beautiful life she had. Celine, on the other hand, interpreted it with power; by doing so, it gave emphasis to her last plea of being saved and her desperate attempt to be loved again. This is how I would have wanted the character to be and for me to hear the desperation from the cat one last time before she died. While the real version had the cat surrendering to her fate, this version had the cat pleading as hard as she can which made it more dramatic. Celine is amazing!!!

Celine is a consistent live singer. Way more than my other faves like Mariah and Whitney. But Streisand is the right mixture emotion, technical ability, power and interpretation live.
She's the only one with longevity compared to those two. She took care of her voice, never desyroying it with drugs or alcohol. 😊

after listening to the full version of her performing this, not just what was shown in many compilation videos, i actually like what she did with the song. obvs it’s not what i am used to with this song, but this was her pop rendition of a musical theatre classic. to me it’s like comparing a singer on one of those competition shows to a seasoned professional-they’re two different interpretations of a song, and should not be judged on the style they choose to sing it in. even if you hate what celine did with the song, there’s no denying she sang the song beautifully with some unique stylistic choices.
Chad Machado people are just stupid for not understanding what Celine did with her interpretation. It isn’t just about her style. She gave the character a resilient and hopeful tone compared to the original whose character pretty much resigned to her fate. I like that she reinvented the character to make her stronger, and the way Celine ended the song is more effective in my opinion because it sounded more as an appeal rather than accepting one’s sad fate.
Céline is obviously a legend and can sing her ass off but personally this version just doesn't do it for me... It's too much

this song asks for a voice like Celine's. lyric and light. (Leona, Nicole etc) JHud's is very dramatic, mettalic and her vibrato is very deep... it doesn't fit the melody, to me.

Honestly, listening to this now, all I can think is what would she do with this song now? Jennifer Hudson is an incredible singer, and the emotion and the harsh things she has been through only make her performances that much more remarkable. But Celine seems to capture the sorrow of a faded career and a lonely life so much better, and she was only a teenager. I'd love to see what she could do with the song today.
