Betty Buckley did this from a CROUCHED position and in ONE breath. I watched her sing this in person and it still gives me chills.
Exactly! Same here! Who belts out like that in that position!? Saw her live and no one compares, ever! ❤ Go Betty!
I totally agree! Crouched……effortless……not yelling, screeching or howling. So strong.
Even Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has stated, again just a 10 days ago, that Betty gave the best of all vocal performances as well as recordings of "Memory" of all these great ladies who played Grizabella or just sang the song.
No vocalist can touch Betty Lynn.
There is only one Grizzabella….and it is Betty Buckley
This woman is an idiot. She can't handle the truth she will report you. Well you can stick your report where the sun don't shine. She can't even speak properly with the correct diction and she expects us to accept her critique? She needs to go bury her head in the sand somewhere. Now she will cry to RUclips saying I am harrassing her but the fact is, she's the one harrassing these performers with her ridiculous uneducated critiques. Word of advice! Read the music idiot, before you critique! Even Andrew Lloyd Weber has stated repeatedly that song is owned by Betty Buckley's performance. So who would you believe an unsuccesful so called voice teacher or the actual composer of the music?
Betty Buckley still did it best!! She displayed such emotion and sadness as the aging cat remembering her youth and "days in the sun". Wow I can relate!
Celine Dion's versions was very *CELINE DION* of her! 😂
That's exactly what I was thinking as I watched her clip. Lol.
Not You I was scared
Shall we go for it? (Slaps chest)
She sang this before she learned/spoke english so I give her props.
I thought that was awesome.
Nobody has ever even come close to Betty Buckley's version of memories. She comes up off that floor with all the emotion, pure clean sound, no screech, and all in one breath. All time best; hands down.
Nicole sings it best!
@@MrSagesteve not even close
To me Betty Buckley is so effortless in her approach to this song and Nicole killed it she’s proving herself as an artist over and over again.
I really like Betty Buckley. She has the pride of a noble cat!
Oh my God there is one and only true perfection and that is Betty Buckley. You need to listen to that again it is 100% perfection.
Exactly.
But Grizabella isn't a noble cat. Just the opposite (although she wishes to be).
You can really feel pain and misery in nicole's version..
The character is trying to keep what little dignity she has left so some restraint is called for. Elaine Page and Betty Buckley get it.
And Mamie Parris
@@tunguska8170 her performance was wonky and she was struggling. Not sorry.
I love the way Nicole's voice rang and filled the halls when she sang "MEMMMMoryyy" and "sUUUUUn". Eh and uh are great vowels for her.
Betty Buckley can bring me to tears with the emotional heft she puts in. She wins hands down.
I agree with you ! I think she was the second to interpreted the role of Grizabella in 1982 and won A Tony Award in 1983 !!! Good job girl !!
Betty Buckley by a mile!
For me Betty Buckley has the best version ever of this song. The power, emotions and superb interpretation all in one rendition by this incomparable talent.
NICOLE EFFING SCHERZINGER SLAYED THAT
Nicole is a stunning vocalist. You should really check out some of her covers (Don't Cry for me Argentina, Phantom of the Opera, And I am telling you, etc.)
Nicole does have great voice. I agree, people should really watch all of her other cover songs!
@@bridgettekhan8418 Don’t Cry For Me Argentina was one of her best performances. She is amazing!
@@TheWolfCrea I'm her fan since 2007 so I saw that already hehe 🙈
Sorry Betty Buckley is the best, watch the original performance all the way through!!
I am a guy! Haha. Thanks for the nice words! I also binge watch your channel for these reactions!! Love Elaine, to me she's the ultimate version personally. Most (if not all) of these ppl have a bway background so when it comes to talent all of them are crazy talented. xx
You’re a legend! Love your videos!
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a way to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost the login password. I appreciate any help you can give me.
Elaine is my absolute number one, though Betty Buckley is an easy second for me :)
You need to watch The whole Betty Buckley performance. She was chosen to be in the Original Broadway cast for a reason. The effortlessness in her voice, and the subtle choices she makes are phenomenal
She was fantastic!
This is exactly what i wanted to say. She is by far the best in my opinion. when you listen to the clips side by side it seems like its kinda lacking but if you see her whole video it just blows you away like no other
I’d say the shiny Tony Award on Ms. Buckley’s mantel helps to offset any criticism of her performance. 😏 She played Grizabella as a “glamour cat” who retained a sense of her worth even after she’d fallen on tough times. She remembers her halcyon days and is not warped by self pity, which is the defining factor in many of the other performances.
I agree, I don't understand this lady? it depends on the sound system! echo location! buckley has by far the most powerful voice! it carry's very easy! remember this is youtube! you don''t the best volume! and it seem like she was cut short! my choice is buckley by far!
I'm shocked at your reaction to Betty Buckley. I felt a lot of these singers tried too hard to sound emotional. Betty simply gave me goosebumps without trying to be frilly.
I think it's a difficult one because Memory is one of those songs where you KNOW how you want it to sound but it's very rare that singers sing it the way you want it to sound.
Betty Buckley.
That's it
1000% Betty Buckley. No one even compares
Same, the ease and acting choices were my favorite. She was one of the few who didn't sound like she was straining to hit the top notes.
Fact.
Ritosha u wish
Barbra is better tho
Ritosha yes ! Betty was the best. This woman is phenomenal. I felt it in my bones
Nicole's voice the most painful so she can delivery with emotion.
Jonas Vieira absolutely
totally agree
I saw Nicole Scherzinger perform this at the London Palladium, I had tears streaming down my face, outstanding as was her performance of Phantom of the Opera.
She is a surprisingly elite vocalist
Betty Buckey's rendition was so exceptional and incomparable! 👏👏👏
But i also love Elaine Page's performance. It was iconic!!!
Leona Lewis and Mamie Parris were so good and emotions ran high too.
Leona Lewis out of the younger ones, and Elaine Paige is iconic as well ❤️
Nicole Scherzinger won this one.
I can’t believe what you said about Betty Buckley. Ugh. Hers is the epitome of perfection. No one comes close to Betty’s version.
Brian Middleton hey it’s her opinion
Elaine and Nicole's are far better in my opinion
yeah i don't feel really anything by that. elaine's gives me major chills. betty's very technically good but i dont feel that weight and pain in the song.
@@bluecosmo. Why this permanent need for pain? It's not the only "emotion" out there. Personally, Betty Buckley hits the tone just right for me, grounded, dignified, slightly nostalgic. What's with all the melodramatic yelling and sobbing on lyrics like "if you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is"?
Agreed
Leona Lewis 🔥🙌🏻
For me it’s still Elaine Paige. Grew up listening to her and nobody can touch her on Memory, she is the Queen!
Again Nicole showing how talented she really is. I don't know why she seems to struggle with her live performances of her pop songs when she can sing this up there with the legends. Maybe it's the dancing and being out of breath. She's just so good and I feel like most people don't realize just how talented she is.
Ikr she is so unbelievably talented and her pop career does her no justice
Admittedly, I didn't realize. Wow 😲
She sings her pops too very well unless shes dancing. Listen to run poison etc
@A P But Nicole won Dancing With The Stars 🤭
Sara Barrera Dancing well & singing well is one thing but being able to do both at the same time. Beyoncé’s practised singing on a treadmill ever since she was 11 to get to the skill of where is today
Nicole is another world
Nicole Scherzinger 😻❤️
Nicole killed it like always. #teamsherzy
When Streisand takes on ANY song, it’s game over, goodnight.
Absolutely 💯
Elaine is the best. But wow Nicole and Leona
Betty Buckley hands down the best imo.
Barbara is a gifted interpreter of songs with a strong sense of musicality that comes naturally! She feels what she sings! Effortlessly 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I watched Nicole perform this live in cats in London in 2014! She was amazing the whole audience froze because her voice filled the theatre
Betty Buckley is the QUEEN of this song! Forget my previous comment, lol.
Betty Buckley’s rendition was technically perfect. Idk how any vocal coach could critique her version more than any of the other clips in this video. Nonsense.
Jadon so true...I’m flabbergasted.
Totally a.gree
Exactly. This woman is a buffoon.
Exactly ! Her opinion of Betty is just ridiculous.
The incomparable Betty Buckley! Hands down, the best! No contest! She acts like a cat would!
❤🐾👍
Definitely Nicole Scherzinger, so underrated, also this truly is a beautiful song one of my favourites
@Mr Sandman u should shut the fuck up
Streisand's version makes me wanna have more than two ears. My favorite by far.
Elaine Paige’s performance is from on stage of Cat’s. She’s actively performing and evoking the emotion that’s intended for this scene. Better Buckley’s clip is from the 1983 Tony Awards. I think there she’s showing the power of her voice rather than portraying any emotion that’s supposed to be felt by the audience. All in all, Betty’s is the best.
Betty was the first person to do this. Everyone else is building off of her work. She's also tied with Elaine in my mind.
Vocally that encompasses technicality and emotion goes to LEONA LEWIS.
Nicole Scherzinger for me.✅🎵💃🏽❤️
As far as I know Nicole had musical theatre training and I love her voice the best when she is singing musical theatre
Leona Lewis obvs
Nobody can beat Elaine Paige she is and always will be the British queen of musical theatre x
Until Lucy Thomas came along
Betty Buckley!!!!! No one can touch her - Gives me goosebumps every time!!!
Ms. Nicole Scherzinger got the perfect emotions, the longing, the pain, knowing the back story of Grizabella, she really pulled it off without any doubt. Her voice is ethereal, powerful, smooth and a masterpiece. Special mention to Ms. Elaine Paige.
Massive respect for the two originators Betty & Elaine.
Heather Headley’s version, sung for a showcase rather than the actual stage role, brings a fresh take that doesn’t feel like she’s aiming to imitate the original.
Mamie Parris for me. Beautiful, powerful voice and wonderful pacing. Such pain, she gives me chills.
Betty Buckley’s voice is absolute perfection, everyone has their own unique take on the number but no one can do it like Buckley and Elaine Paige in my opinion
Nicole the best 😍
Nicole wow 😮
*Best Vocal Rendition:* Bette Buckley! Immense RESONANCE 👑🐈
*Best Acting:* Elaine Paige! She truly embodies Grizabella 🌟🐱
*Honourable Mentions:*
Madam Streisand - So effortless, powerful & beautiful ✨
Nicole Scherzinger - Quite emotive & very admirable vocals 🌌
Leona Lewis - Definitely a wonderful vocal rendition from a Light Lyric Soprano voice. This role usually fits voice types with more vocal weight eg. Full Lyric Soprano, Spinto Soprano etc. But this lady handled it very well! Acting wasn't very convincing but great vocals 🌌
Jennifer Hudson: I know she wasn't included in this video, but her rendition is quite captivating plus she showed fantastic restraint! 🌹
*Who, what, when, where, why & how could you do this to us:*
Celine Dion 😐
Phenomenal vocalist but in this case, way less is definitely more.
I feel like Celine isn't meant to sing classical music. Too much riffing to my liking
I can tell you that the Celine clip came from the late 80s on a Quebec variety show. It was right before Celine went back to school to learn English and release her first English record in 1990.
LOL, when she sings without Riffing people say she's boring. She sings with riffing,it's too much. I say she do as she likes!
Also, you have to listen to the entire performance. She built it up in a very subtle way, then she let it rip at the end.
Celine’s was when she was 17 and didn’t even speak English
YES! Nicole Scherzinger
Betty Buckley, absolutely haunting!
Mamie Parris easily became my favorite Griz. She has the power and emotion, and did the phrase in a single breath with ease. Incredible all around.
Agree that she's really talented for doing the phrase in one take, but the pauses in that part were really essential for emphasis. She'd beat Ellen Paige's version if she'd done that
Nicole Scherzinger of course!! ❤
Leona... Always Leona.
Leona Lewis ❤️❤️❤️
For me it has to be Elaine Paige, such emotion. Barbra Streisand sings it beautifully. John Barrowman also does it justice.
Lea salonga!!!! Is there even any broadway song she cannot sing in a quite spectacular way????
She struggles a bit with Defying Gravity.
BUT
It's still better than Idina.
Daniel Blair not better than Idina.
Daniel Blair she struggles w belting in general lol
Lea is far better than Idina.
@@danielblair9535 okay, but that’s an extremely difficult song for anyone to sing. Also, don’t talk smack on Idina unless you can sing better than her. In short, you cannot, so don’t posture.
Nicole Scherzinger by far for me 💯 it has everything from epic vocals and so much emotions ❤️❤️
so proud of her
Team LEONNNAAAAA LEWIS!!!
River Lavelle yass
Nicole all the way followed by miss lewis
Betty all the way. Resonant, effortless and in character. Barbra's another favorite of mine, although it's not live. (By the way we need more Streisand in this channel
Ugh Lea is also such a pleasure to listen to and Kerri such a powerhouse.
Stephanie J. Block is also incredible. She's a broaway queen and does great covers on youtube.
Mamie Parris!!!! She's been on Broadway for Cats and few other things and sang it all in one breath!!! I've been in a masterclass with her! She's just so awesome and an amazing actress/vocalist!
She was my favorite Elphaba.
While I think Elaine Page is incredible, I think Betty Buckley gave the definitive version. I was actually surprised at your reaction to this, as I was starting to tear up as she sang, and I'd just listened to like twenty other people sing the same passage.
It's a matter of style preference on some of these, because the vocal precision was just that good on a few, but BB would be very hard to beat on clarity and tone. It hits different than the others. Nicole also is exceptional, and shocking when I first heard her sing it.
Wow im impressed on the take on Betty Buckley, when she was very well known for really putting Memory up there in the Top, not to mention, ALW used her to promote the song more over Elaine Paige. Betty is still my favorite. The most interesting thing about her version of Memory is that she has the fastest tempo for the climax compared to others which is HARD! everyone else's was slowed down to project a lot more emotion to the song.
Nicole Scherzinger she was the best omg , I loved it 😻😻😻
I think all of them were good but if I went to see it live, I would pay for Nicole Scherzinger.
I hope she does it in broadway! She'll surely get a Tony for it. Acting + vocals, superb!!!
She sung it live at two intimate concerts a few weeks back. It was incredible.
Cino Marb she was to take it to broadway a few years back but she backed out to do x factor. Andrew lloyd weber was super pissed
@@benjjjjsin yes
That "touch me" in the voice of Nicole Sherzinger really touched my soul! 💖🎬🌟
Mamie Parris. No one had her emotion and depth. I just met her and I already love her.
Elaine is the best for combined singing and emotion!
Nicole
For me, Barbra Streisand did the ultimate POP version of this song. It's flawless and in your video, it was hardly shown or discussed. The way she sings TOUCH ME is so ringing and open. No one else come close. There were lots of great versions of this standard. It's actually a very difficult song to belt. All the stage belters did a great job with the song. I think of them as equals. Elaine and Betty get bonus points for being the originals. The Jennifer Hudson version from America's Got Talent is very good.
Eddie James yes, I hate the way she just barely mentioned Barbra
The crestor of the video put a shorter clip for Barbra to avoid Copyright
Agreed
Yes the original person who put the video together put a small clip of Barbra's version. It would have been interesting to hear more discussion about it since it was the only studio version among the clips and the only pop version (besides Glee). Very different ways of singing.
Barbra's version was the best.
My absolute favorite: Elaine Paige; my 2nd favorite: Betty Buckley; Another fantastic singer who sang "Memory" in Cats was Mamie Parris.
Betty. Elaine. Stephanie. True, Broadway performers who understand how to deliver a song like that. No stunt casting to be found.
Wow! Queen Nicole Scherzinger 😍
Real CATS and musical theatre fans know Betty Buckley owns this song
Don't be silly! Elaine is as highly regarded. If not more so
I am a musical theatre fan and CATS fan as well but for me Elaine Paige will always be the best Grizabella. Betty just isn't giving me the emotion the song calls for
Meh, guess I'm not a REAL Cats fan, despite watching it multiple times. 🤣
Elaine Paige will always win this for me
For me nicole scherzinger the most emotional powerful voice there
Aaron Middleton absolutely agree
Agreed 💯!!!! It gives me chills all over!
Agree! Chills all over my body with her rendition!!
Sai do laranja nicole
Nicole Scherzinger ❤
Memory is the most beautiful broadway song of all time!! Love that you’re reacting to it!!
I think the shrill sound of Betty Buckley's interpretation was meant to imitate a cat's voice. At least that's what it sounded like to me.
STEPHANIE J BLOCK! She is so incredible please look her up!! She just won a tony this past year for the Cher Musical and has had an INCREDIBLE career on broadway. Memory was the first video i watched of her as well years ago and I’ve followed her ever since ❤️
No one will ever come close to Betty Buckley singing this song regardless to what anyone says.
Nicole Scherzinger best
My fellow Kentuckian Nicole Scherzinger for the win! She was actually born in Honolulu but was raised and educated here in Louisville, so we claim her as one of our own. Would have loved to have seen her do this live.
Leona lewis hands down
Betty is my fave every time.
Oh, my - why is there a lack of love for Miss Lea Solanga?? Her passion and emotion here was an A+ for me. True star power from her in my eyes.
I was just wondering this
I thought it was one of the weaker ones
Yes
the difference is, that when I listen to Elaine Page, I feel the meaning of the song. the others sing just to be singing ...
also, no offense but I don't understand why we give the grizabella role to young girls like leona lewis, nicole scherzinger ... beautiful voices but grizabella character is mature, full of life experience. it just does not match
Nicole wasn't young. lmao she was 37 at the time.
@@windlife 37 not young, really? I feel like Grizabella best could be played by someone who is 50 years old, maybe more.
@@windlife yeah but with all those plastic surgeries she still looks too good to play an old and tired cat
@@Yann-be7lx And Elaine Paige was 33 at the time she played Cats. What's your point again??
Elaine Paige remains as the best Grizzabella, Betty Buckley is good in other roles, just like Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard is far superior than Patti LuPone
Really? Did Elaine Paige win The Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical For Cats? Betty Buckley did...in 1983, the first year run on Broadway.
@@roger1296 Dude, that's just their opinion. Acting and singing are all subjective. Don't get all defensive just because you disagree with what he said.
@@roger1296 She wouldn't have been up for a Tony because Elaine didn't play the role on Broadway...she was chosen to play Grizabella in the filmed version from 1998...there's a reason for that. Paige originated the role in 1981.
Elaine Paige, Nicole Sherzinger or Kerry Ellis. Too difficult to choose between.
Poor Nicole, if only her life took a different path.. she would have stood where Mariah Carey did.. she can sing any song any tune beautifully! she is one of the most underrated singers of all time!!!
Now was there really a need to diss Mariah like that??
Najaja Jwwurhdb did you understand what she was talking about?
One of mariahs main strengths is SHE WRITES her own songs. Other girls are just given lyric sheets and the occasional backup group. Lol
Nicole Scherzinger ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Unpopular opinion but Heather Headley's version is my favorite after Elaine Paige's rendition. I really felt her emotion in that performance.
Elaine wins because she was Grizabela when I saw this live and I'll always remember that performance.
I always say that I WISH I could have been there the first night this was sung. You are so lucky. Nichole is my favorite. I listen to this almost everyday. I cry because it always reminds me of my Granmother. She was an artist (painter) and absolutely stunning. She hated getting old.
I liked Headley too: for me, the pause and the softening of the moment really sold it, and you needed the largeness of the moment before in order to bring out what that gentleness means.
same
Elaine obviously owns it, but I was surprised at your Buckley comment. I thought it is the only version next to Paige’s.
