And Iger said someone else taking over Disney would be bad because "they don't understand what it really is" but they don't have enough brains between them all to understand what those properties were. While there was some overlap, they each had their own core niche they filled that created their success. Disney has moved to trying to treat them as Disney properties instead of things in their own right. I think they got lucky with Marvel up to Endgame, because it had been plotted so far in advance, and just out did Disney's expectations. If Disney had higher expectations, they likely would have f'ed it up long ago.

Capaldi entered Who right as I was becoming older myself. I could identify with this Older Doctor who didn't feel old and tried to dress hip with a hoodie and long coat. He saw himself as young and carefree, living on the edge and kind. Just like I was entering my mid 40s having to come to terms that I still feel young even though I look 10 years older....seriously total grey at 45 sucks dudes and with an encroaching bald spot, long grey hair is a now a no no....lol.. shaved it is ladies.
But yeah, I absolutely enjoyed Capaldi and he's won me over as my fav. Doctor.
Edit, I'm even older now lol, 51. So Identifying with an onscreen character is kind meaningful. If the character is too alien I.e a Black chick lesbian which I am neither, it's definitely harder to identify with the character. I give two fraks what color your skin is, don't give a rats ass what your sexual preference is, just give me good stories without alienating the viewers instead of telling the viewers it's their fault the ratings suck and blaming the viewers and saying they can't wait for the white male demographic to leave because we are toxic...um excuse me...no, your ratings suck because the primary viewing audience are straight white blokes, that's the hard truth of the matter. I know they are chasing demographics because there is a lot of money in the other demographics, but the other demographics DONT SHOW UP. It's why Men's Hockey in Canada sell out, and Women's hockey doesn't. The hockey promoters lose their shirts when they secure a large arena, the women don't show up and support their own women teams so guess what, the promoters don't book huge arenas.
      Grrr..sorry for the rant.
All the DEI justice warriors see is bigots when it's far from the truth.

Well seeing as the actor hired to play the black and gay doctor talked about using twerking to kill aliens, it does make one question the behavior of the actor discuss using their buttocks to kill aliens while playing the doctor. Its just an odd thing to say and its not going to attract watchers.
And then there is the question why are fans talking female doctor or black and gay doctor in the first place. Perhaps the marketing focusing on race and genital hole preference should be looked at as well as the writing. Shouldn't we just be talking about the doctor as the doctor and not an identity? Because it seems the BBC is pushing identity over story.

Its funny because nobody is publically admitting its failed spectacularly. The BBC wont comment and will only push the narrative in 'changing landscape of television', disney wont comment but its clear they are not happy and holding back on green lighting a third series. RTD commented on it saying the ratings werent good basically but that it had been popular with youth, which is a bit like the glitter on this turd of a situation.
I think its highly likely that doctor who is very close to cancellation and that disney and RTD were like a last chance saloon for the show and its not paying off.
Personally i dont think the industry at the moment have what it takes to make good doctor who and I would very much like the show to be cancelled to save further humiliation for the show given that its only going to get worse and its not in a good place now to say the least

To be honest I dont believe a word of most of the rumours etc...Disney will make any old crap if its Woke and diverse etc. And wont admit a thing if its a disaster and goes over like Rolf Harris at a Led Zeppelin concert. I can see them dropping the deal after two seasons as its all done and dusted and paid up now and its been utter crap. What makes them think the second season is not going to be more of the same? Its all been filmed at the same time, so it will just be as bad, and the audience can continue to fall away. Its done badly for live views, down to the 2 million mark. And its done badly for catchup, Iplayer, online, consolidated and basically every other method of viewing. All of those added together still only add on another 1.5 million or less viewers to the low 2 million, they cant even beat the live viewers with Iplayer etc, so can no longer use the excuse that people will watch it online, and live overnights dont matter anymore. They do. Disney+ never got a look in. It never charted once, and when you look at the lowest figures of what did chart, that means Doctor Who had to get even less! How are Disney going to pressure the BBC to drop RTD??? Who are they going to get to make it the show? As Bad Wolf is its own production company, drop RTD and you will lose Bad Wolf. One thing is obvious, its been an utter debacle, and they are scrambling around, keeping tight lipped and trying to pretend its all A OK, when it clearly is anything but...

I was indifferent when Who ended with Sylvester McCoy, bur in restrospect, I think it was Colin who sort of lost me. Tom Baker was great and I actually liked Peter Davison a lot (he had a nice set of companions). Eccleston, Tenant, Matt Smith were great and Capaldi was underrated. Look at his interviews when he is mincing about and talking about being gay and etc, especially the one where he says people wont be able to handle his "chocolateness" or whatever he was on about. And take that, stick it in Doctor Who and there you are, Gatwa as Gatwa as Gay Doctor. He was pathetic in Masters of the Air, he had a few lines you could see he struggled to deliver in an American accent and milled about with the other black airmen in the back ground for a couple of episodes. As for his other gay drama roles, all I have seen are clips and that was enough...since I am not gay and not a fan of gay dramas or gay roles of any sort. The show that the book series taught me to read. And there he is being the campest and gayest creep I have ever seen first, and the rest is not important to him. And to think people complained about John Inman in Are You Being Served and he was too much of a camp gay stereo type etc...and yet in 2024 we have been given something way worse. Disney is the primary commisioner of the show. BBC One hasn't been particularly interested in the show because it retains the IP and it costs them very little and to the bbc as a whole it makes a profit through BBC studios as the distributor. It doesn't cost the BBC a thing. If Disney pulls out and Bad Wolf can't find alternative markets with BBC Studios the show will be paused because BBC One is not interested. It's a terrible show now and RTD made it that way but the worst thing is he did it deliberately. It, justifyingly, gets negative attention which is not remotely a good thing in a licence renewal cycle. He created crap because he thought people would like crap. He was wrong. If Disney doesn't recommission, under him it will not continue with him in charge. It's that simple.

The show was not struggling after Matt Smith left. There was a drop in viewing figures but mostly because some people couldn't accept a doctor which wasn't a tennant or Smith type (ageism). In fact series 8 has the highest viewer numbers in America for any doctor who series ever. The show appealing to mainstream is a double edged sword, in doing so you can alienate older fans but also casual viewers will drop the show if anything changes because they aren't as invested in it. Nostalgia fuelled the 60th anniversary and if we can't move on from that then there is no hope for Doctor who.

Sadly this show has become little more than a 'message' delivery system and ego stroking fantasy for the writers/showrunners. Please note that I've had the deepest respect for all of the lead actors, they can only do the best with the drivel that they've had to work with. The show didn't need reinventing - it just needed a good injection of better, clever and non-preachy writing. The fan base ages with the show - so it should be targeting an older demographic (you know - the people that made it popular in the first place!!!). If you want a hit show for 8-21 year olds - build one from scratch.

No, there was zero "sharing of viewing figures" for S1. The BBC always has been and continues to be the exclusive home for DW in the UK and RoI. Viewing beyond the BBC's remit has previously been fragmented between numerous separate broadcasters. Such as BBC America or ABC and later BBC First in Australia. Their viewing figures which only to reach a few thousand were always treated separately to the UK/RoI.
Repeating the claim from the BBC that the show has actually done well for the under 35's is disingenuous. Unless the BBC provide verified data to back that claim.
Unfortunately the Disney money hasn't so far translated into tangible difference on screen. Except for the underused Tardis interior. Compare with how good The Mandelorian looks (ignore whether the stories are good or bad), it looks a million dollars. DW by contrast does not really, does it? The Tardis could have been revamped without being so large and lavish. Frankly I would have expected a bottle episode- being trapped inside with things going wrong etc- to justify that expense. Maybe Disney are asking "who made off with our cash?" Someone within the BBC or Bad Wolf should have stood up to RTD and say "No," that money could have been put towards other uses on screen or perhaps fund a whole extra episode.
Bad Wolf owe their DW contract to RTD and he is a fellow lefty luvvie. They will feel obliged to try to keep him on board. The trouble is his writing hasn't been anywhere near as good as his first tenure. The Doctor he has written, for example, is the least Doctor-like incarnation and I also believe Gatwa was either miscast or not given the right direction. No doubt many will argue Gatwa is a good actor. I'm not convinced. His portrayal in DW was dreadful and the only other thing I have seen him in was (all of) the Netflix series with Gillian Anderson. In that he played a gay African immigrant. Did he really have to put much acting into that?
There's nothing Disney might gain from a third season. The shows reputation is tarnished now thanks to the choices RTD made. Plus of course the current was only a sop to the BBC so they could get their hands on over 150 episodes of Bluey. This is performing very well on Disney and they know preschoolers will rewatch episodes again and again. There is nothing more Disney can achieve with S3 of what is perceived to be a failing series.
The BBC should announce they are putting the show in hiatus, before Disney have the chance to pull the plug. It won't look quite so bad. The corporation can say lots of nice things and that the show achieved everything they wanted, without specifying what that might have been. Everyone saves face. RTD, Collinson, Tranter and Gardner will be free to move on with blemish to their record.

I think Disney will see how the 2nd series goes along. I think RTD will naturally go back into a more Executive Producer role. He doesn't seem that invested in it with his attitude to stories or parts of stories and viewers reaction to them. We all have opinions and RTD can't respond to and keep all viewers with story lines but he shouldn't actively alienate them. I think the actor who plays a police detective in i think it's in return to paradise based in Devon would be good as the next doctor and could be introduced within series 3 which I feel would be better as a series of specials. To put all their effort into fewer but longer programmes. Just a few ideas.

I do think Gatwa is totally miscast in the role, he might work fine in a comedy but he is very annoying as the Doctor and keep crying every time something gets the least bit tense.
Doctor Who is Sci-fi with some horror elements and while it is fine for him to be a bit quirky and make a joke now and then, it does not work when the entire show feel like a spoof.
But the main problem with the show is the writing, RTDs own stuff is the worst of it all but his other writers isn't doing a good job either, even Moffat phoned his episode in.
I don't think the Doctor actually saves a single person in the entire first season besides a snot monster.
There was a half good episode (was it 73 feet or 73 yards, whatever) that actually felt like Doctor Who for the first half but they totally messed it up in the second half and ended up with something that doesn't make any sense.
They seriously should hire in writers from Big Finnish instead, they make excellent audiobooks and understand the source material and know how to write a mystery.
I have serious doubts about Disney signing up for a third season before they see the ratings of season 2, at least with Davies and Gatwa. The show did really poorly in Nielsen ratings on streaming and while Disney might just have gotten their hands on some sweet Deadpool and Inside out money, they lost a lot of money on producing expensive shows that never really hit the streaming charts with their Disney+ content.
They seems to have cancelled season 2 of the Acolyte and it had better numbers then RTDs Who, so there is no way they will sign up for a third season of that without the second season turning into a hit somehow.
Who needs at minimum have Whitaker numbers again for them even thinking of renewing it with the current team. They might sign on for a Moffat + Tenant series though.

I never watched any of the Ncuti Gatwa episodes, even though I loved him in "Sex Education", purely because of all the trailers in which he looked completely unrecognisable as "The Doctor".
What I would like to see from a third series is a change of doctor (I've seen Tom Burke's name mentioned and I think he'd be great) and I would like every episode to be written by guest writers who are well regarded in the horror and/or sci-fi genres. One episode per writer but following a series long overall theme.

I am a follower from the first season with William HartnelI must admit that some of the material from the originl later series where falling off but the begining of the reboot who was for me in the right vane I think the biggest problem is that to often new show runners want to reinvent the doctor and do not really understand who and what the doctor stands for.

Wasn’t this video already debunked and out of date by the time it went live? RTD helped host the SDCC presentation, a spinoff was approved by Disney. I thought the latest season was one of the best yet - upped the quality game for digital and practical effects, well crafted twists and turns anticipating fan reactions, and individualized episodes that were able to craft these new and unique worlds and experiences. The new Doc has a lot of youthful energy, and does a great job at revealing that he has a bit of hidden trauma and turmoil from over the years. It’s a complex character that still has a lot to deal with.
Most people that have criticisms I’ve seen grew up with Doctor Who, and that’s a natural part of growing up. As we age, we typically get more critical from our experience dictating how things could and should be. We lose that innocence, that youthful creative energy that lets us embrace the whimsical. Personally I think it is incredibly important to keep hold of that for as long as you can, because once the criticisms take over it is very difficult to look at something thru youthful eyes again.

I loved this past series. 73 Yards, Dot & Bubble, and Boom would stack well against any of the prior series episodes. They were bold and beautifully well told stories, and the messaging was on point and true to the roots of the show. The only low points for me were Space Babies which was too kiddie, and Rogue because I don't like Bridgerton style stuff, it just isn't made for me.
I hope RTD and Bad Wolf stay the course and build like they did with the 2005 to 2010 run before Moffat. Disney has described the series in its leaked info as a "low-cost" production for them, so why would they pull out of something they aren't spending much money on, and are likely to see a net gain from in the long run (Especially if they can ever prize the international back catalog away from MAX)? That seems it would be short sighted. I don't want BBC to pick another showrunner because the last one we had, Chibs, was a complete and total disaster. If RTD ever wants to leave I hope he grooms a good successor like he did with Moffat and we never get a Chibs type at the helm ever again. If Disney pulls out, no big whup. It'll get made in some fashion regardless because the BBC's economic impact report is so positive overall. Average viewership in the UK was just under 4 million and that's just in the first week. Imagine if the CW had got those numbers on any show? They'd of been popping the Champaign bottles! Is it at all fair to say this series did worse than Jodi's run? No. Because it isn't true. You have to look at where it ranked in the weeks it aired against everything else and some of her placements were really low. Bottom line: The show is the best it has been since Series 10 and it's doing about what it did comparatively speaking to the 2005 series. There is no reason to panic, to doomsay, nor to quote articles that contained wild inaccuracies on the surface that made any real fans reading it wonder if the writer knew anything about the show At All, other than what they'd been told by someone next to them while they were busy scrolling through something else on their phone.
