I have a theory that the 4 models were made out of wood and they had to make an individual model for one another which explains why they don't look Clayish and the technique reminds me a lot of George Pals puppetoons
I worked on these animations. I have one of the 4s in my living room right now and checked. It’s made of four layers of wood laminated together. The ones that distort were made of thinner wood.

I did manage to track down footage of the Christmas 1984 ident of Channel 4 and posted it on the server
I really enjoy this videos cause they bring back memories.
Aardman, the home of Wallace And Gromit (who almost got Americanized, im a Canadian who loves uk tv) and Shaun The Baa-i mean sheep.
Some brilliant franchises they have under their belt!
