*PLEASE NOTE - Skip to **0:51** to bypass replaced audio* Due to a copyright claim, I've had to replace the music for the first 45 seconds of the video. Because the replacing system RUclips offers is incredibly basic, it overlays any audio, not just music. So my usual opening 'Hello and welcome...' etc, had to go. This was the only way in which I could keep the video up and fully visible without completely deleting and re-uploading, which was the last thing I wanted to do. Hope you all understand. Other episodes of the Ident Review have been affected in a similar way, so any video that has this as the pinned comment will have replaced audio, and the timestamp as above from where you can enjoy the episode as intended
The C4 ident is something to behold. I remember when it first came on air, I was mesmerised by it "we have a forth channel!!!!" me and my brothers cried as we watched in amazement these blocks flying about. The logo has to be one of the most iconic of this generation. I will be fucked off if they ever get rid of the original block formation. Love your videos by the way.
Martin Lambie-Nairn also worked on the Personality 2's as well as three BBC One idents: * Virtual Globe * The Balloon * Rhythm & Movement He also devised the Blobs for BBC Three and created the 2008 look for BBC News. R.I.P. Martin Lambie-Nairn (1945-2020), a man who had one special TV identity...himself.
The attention to detail during that night was outstanding. From the 4:3 aspect ratio to the announcers' way of reading the schedule. I'm confident they'll use these again next November.
Sad to hear about the death of a TV legend like Martin Lambie-Nairm. The creator of some many iconic idents such as the original Channel 4 lineup and the 90's BBC2 lineup like u mentioned. He also was involved in the creation of the BBC1 Ballon and the ITV hearts idents 1999. May he rest in peace
Channel 4 don't do it very often, purely I think because of the royalties they'd have to pay each time Fourscore is used, hence why that jingle changed to its' 1992-96 iteration. But totally agree. Was nice to see it come back on Friday!
To really capture the atmosphere of Channel 4's infancy, each ad break could have been replaced by music and a caption card "Programmes Follow Shortly", lol.
That third ident was everything you could want from an 80s Channel 4 ident! It reminded me of Back To The Future! You've definitely made me want to watch It's a Sin too 👏😁 Big love for this video 📹❤
Oh, I didn't know they went retro all day! I expected the blocks to come out for the show itself, so I recorded that, and then it was back to the giant afterwards for The Last Leg. Nice. Edit: Interesting to note that many of these are trailer sequences repurposed as idents, so as to have more variety than just the blocks, which were used for the 25th anniversary in all of their variants, as were the programme menus. That speaks to a more modern use of idents, that is having a larger pool of idents to use, whereas just the blocks might have had audiences unfamiliar with them thinking 'is that it?'. I expect there was an element of the 3D idents' debut on New Year's Day 2005 for some, tuning in to, or recording every programme to see what comes next. Shame I missed it now.
I remember watching the 25th anniversary mainly for the idents, as I’d seen clips in various “top 100 ‘80s” type programmes but never in their native environment. I can see why they wanted more variety here. The art gallery display one really reminds me of the mid-00s ones (the buildings, floating neon, hedges, etc). In that the 4 is only visible from a certain perspective, rather than flying together itself we have to move as the camera to see it.
BE nice if they did this to Celebrate 4mations oneday but Channel 4 seem to forgot that whole Animation block exists it was not even mentioned once in their 40th aniverary shows airing christmas 2020 once.
Russell T. Davis is a great guy, I remember he also worked on a now-retired show, Wizards vs Aliens, which used to be one of my favourites as a small child.
The takeaway I get from this, is that something good will forever remain good. It's like when BBC Two unprecedentedly restored their 1990's set for a while. Should new always replace old, just for the sake of progress? it's a difficult question to answer. New creativity should always be allowed. But should old always be replaced by new? Channel 4 have never truly abandoned their initial image. They keep finding excuses to revert to it, for any half-plausible reason. And I think it is beginning to paint a picture that good art should never be forgotten. In my opinion, now is the right time for Channel 4 to embrace every identity it has ever had and somehow incorporate it's entire history whilst continuing to add to the collection.
11:01 I like this ident. The only thing that can make it even better is the announcer announcing the episode of The Simpsons that used this ident. I love the Simpsons.
Thank you mate 😊 I may do a sort of series review once I've finished watching it, but no guarantees I'm afraid! My video schedule is crammed as it is and I wouldn't want to rush a review! Nevertheless, watch this space!
I really hope with all the positive praise they've received from it that they either introduce it on a more regular basis! Maybe not to take over completely, but for 80's nights would be great!
I'm glad you enjoyed the ep! 😊 I fancied shortening the whole intro sequence as I thought before it was getting a bit too long! But never say never, it may return in the future
The swimming pool one reminds me of the painting The Big Splash and the Shards reminds me of Superman. I'm worried that privatising Channel 4 will undo all the inclusion and diversity.

Adam Martyn Do you think channel 4 will use these I dents to celebrate the channel's 40th anniversary later this year?

R.I.P. Martin Lambie-Nairn (1945-2020), a man who had one special TV identity...himself.
I would also like to point out that Martin Lambie-Nairn also came up with the STV/Scottish Television “Bertie Bassett” style thistle logo in 1985
He also made an ident for itv Carlton (I think)

I could've mentioned BBC3's blobs.
I wish alot of companies would do this. Reverting back to their older logos, but giving said logos and idents a new breath of fresh air.
burger king did that i think, although not with idents, since they're.. not.. a tv channel

There are Burger King and Telefonica.
And it saves money too.
A great overview of a great throwback. May Martin Lambie-Nairn rest in peace.
This is really cool! It's like in the time machine to go to the 80s for showing Channel 4's classic presentation.
This is so cool and I had no idea it was happening! Gutted I missed it so thank you for this!
The Shard Ident Strikingly Resembles The Fortress Of Solitude.
You're spot on with that one!
I wonder if it was to go before a network premier of a Superman film or something
loved the 80s themed idents , really took me back to when we only had 4 or 5 channels.
10:07 reminds me of central 1982
Loved the retro idents, I feel they could've shown some 80s adverts too ? Like the milk tray man etc
To really capture the atmosphere of Channel 4's infancy, each ad break could have been replaced by music and a caption card "Programmes Follow Shortly", lol.
I wanna see you make an Ident Review on the 5 channels BSB had! (Galaxy, Now, The Movie Channel, The Power Station, and The Sports Channel)
That third ident was everything you could want from an 80s Channel 4 ident! It reminded me of Back To The Future!
You've definitely made me want to watch It's a Sin too 👏😁
Big love for this video 📹❤
It certainly does have that BTTF vibe now that you mention it! 😁 oh it's so fantastic! I think you'll love it! Big love for you 😘❤

videohead, the long awaited prequel to the hit band radiohead
It’s great they did this. Fantastic video as always
Thank you Luke! 😊 it is wonderful that they went all out with this!
Adam Thank You To Review The Video Head Ident That Ident Is Really Creepy And Scary And It Also Reminds Me Of One Of The E4 2007 Idents
BE nice if they did this to Celebrate 4mations oneday but Channel 4 seem to forgot that whole Animation block exists it was not even mentioned once in their 40th aniverary shows airing christmas 2020 once.
fourscore and seven years ago…
also i’m surprised they couldn’t afford a real vcr for the promos
edit: may martin rest in peace.
Russell T. Davis is a great guy, I remember he also worked on a now-retired show, Wizards vs Aliens, which used to be one of my favourites as a small child.
I remember Wizards vs. Aliens! A brilliant pseudo follow up to the Sarah Jane Adventures!
@@AdamMartyn was it follow up to Sarah Jane? I didn't know that!
That's dedication. A brilliant throwback to the 80s.
Martin Lambie Nairn was also behind the legendary ITV Weathergens of 1996-2001 and the excellent 1999-2002 Carlton Star idents. RIP.
They did these Retro 80s Idents for Channel 4's 25th Anniversary in 2007
loved these idents
I didn’t know the ident review is back!

I wish I had seen these Idents while they were on air.
Please do separate ident reviews for the different itv regions (like ATV and Central)
Other than Fourscore, do we know any of the other pieces of music used in the background of idents as part of this collection?
11:01 I like this ident. The only thing that can make it even better is the announcer announcing the episode of The Simpsons that used this ident. I love the Simpsons.
Er, weren't a few of these promo bookends before...? That Videohead one especially.
RIP Martin Lambie-Nairn he did the Channel 4 idents and BBC 2 idents
Fitting tribute to Martin Lambie-Nairn. Please can you do a review of It's a Sin?
Thank you mate 😊 I may do a sort of series review once I've finished watching it, but no guarantees I'm afraid! My video schedule is crammed as it is and I wouldn't want to rush a review! Nevertheless, watch this space!
I hope they air the throwback idents again for Channel 4’s 40th anniversary this year.
Great review! Also, TG4 in Ireland recently got some new idents and released them on RUclips. Might be worth a review some day 😉
"Abstract" looks like the Four-Mations intro. I don't remember this one.
I like how Channel 4 is reminding us of when it was actually not complete shazbot but this still feels like a ratings trap.
Nice video, I didn't know about this but that's really cool! D'you reckon they'll do this again with the other episodes?
I really hope with all the positive praise they've received from it that they either introduce it on a more regular basis! Maybe not to take over completely, but for 80's nights would be great!
another great review.
Was that your bookshelf filmed near the end? Because I really want to know more about that “History of Sonic the Hedgehog” book that was on it.
It was indeed! It was a history of the series released to celebrate the 20th anniversary back in 2011! They need to do a 30th update this year!
Adam Martyn - I’ll keep an eye out to see if they do.
Knew as soon as I saw these you'd be covering them lol
You know me too well! Can't resist a modern day throwback as far as idents go 😁
Shards one - could that originally be for a Superman movie premiere?
You do know that Garth Marenghi's Darkplace also used the Fourscore ident too, don't you?
Hey Adam, can you take a look at the ARTE 'cultural magnet' idents?
kind of miss the AMTV Intro With BBC One And The "Just A Reminder" Intro but Great Episode :)
I'm glad you enjoyed the ep! 😊 I fancied shortening the whole intro sequence as I thought before it was getting a bit too long! But never say never, it may return in the future
@@AdamMartyn I Can't Wait For Future Episodes :)
Yes 😊
Is it me, or does 'Shards' remind you of Superman's Fortress of Solitude? Either way, it's cool.
is the ident review coming back?
C4 had a great continuity and graphics department back in the day. Central ITV's was just as good too
Channel 4 already uploaded idents without the voiceover: ruclips.net/video/6trE2EXGr-4/видео.html
They did indeed! But I wanted to play some with & without continuity announcers! 😊
Awesome stuff! The song used at the beginning was from 1992 though. Was it meant to represent the 80s?
Have you seen Applemasks/Bob the fish productions videos on ITV and Channel 4 and if you have what do you think of it?
This is special
Request: Sic 25th Anniversary Idents
Could You Do The Ident Review Of The New TG4 Idents?
I never even knew about these idents until I saw the thumb mail for this video😯😉
I miss this series
The Tiles It’s Has Great 80s beats and music it reminds me of Michael Jackson And Dead or Alive
3:58: ABSTRACT
Yes, more Ident Reviews coming soon thank god.
Its not gonna necessarily be one a week, but more episodes will eventually arrive 😊

I'm worried that privatising Channel 4 will undo all the inclusion and diversity.
Uploaded on My Mum's 40th Birthday!
well this the last time 80s 4. see you on the other side
What MEANS throwback & flashback?
I like the videohead ident
Great I dent

Please can we have Max Headroom for PM? Don't trust the real ones.
And where's the ba da bumm bumm bumm on the first one?
Hello I am first
Why didn't they just remake the original 80's idents?
Edit: oh they did
