He had a sharp aquos or what ever they were called and mine was an RCA I bought for 150 dollars from the drug store. This was 5 or 6 years ago but a couple years later all of a sudden there's talk of these ultra hd tv's and it's like ok and then 4k but I started thinking more about it and really since the time 720p came out they pretty much had the technology to make 4k tvs. Theres a huge difference between the pixel size of a 20 inch, 720p tv and a 60 inch, 720p tv. But the pixels on a 20 inch 720p tv are the same size as the pixels on a 60 inch, 4k so they could have made 4k tvs like 10 or 15 years ago, they probably would have been clunky as shit but it was possible. but that's the way it is and has been for a very long time. they have the technology but if they sold the newest technology right now then what would they sell you tomorrow? same reason companies make products that will break after about 2 years. But they have the technology to make insane tvs like 16k resolution or even better than that and i mean they could do it right now in fact they probably could have done it years ago. think about it your smart phone is probably 1080p probably better and it's only say a 5 inch screen for math purposes so if you used the same size pixels and doubled the screen size that's 4k on a 10 inch screen. Double again that's a 20 inch 8k tv. Double again that's a 40 inch tv at 16k. Totally possible and most phones like i said are better than 1080p so it would be more than that. What's crazy is that you think can fit about 60 pixels from your phone screen into one pixel on a 40 inch 1080p tv because 1080p has something like 2 million pixels and the theoretical 40 inch 16k tv (which would have the same size pixels as my phone) would have 128 million pixels which would mean in the place of one pixel on a 1080p 40 inch tv there would be 64 pixles. All of that really made me think what the hell when I first saw a tv that was 4k which meant it was double the resolution of my tv but was also double the size at 44 inches which means the pixels in both tvs were the same size there was just 4 times more of them. But instead of 4 times the price of my tv which would have been 600 dollars or even twice that at 1200 just because its the new cool thing. but no, they started at like 3000 and that's not even for a good brand. as if it was some crazy thing like we were so lucky there R&D department made this new tv when really they just used the same stuff they had lying around in the factory. they didn't struggle to shrink the technology down it was already shrunk, and it was right in front of our very eyes yet they are selling it almost like it's new technology. They literally had to just take 4 20 inch 1080p tvs and stick them together and boom. you got yourself a 4k tv
Because companies love to make people suffer on purpose..... they do this spitefully. its really fucking annoying. we are almost in 2020 and we have yet to have adaptive sync technology as a standard on ALL monitors and TVs. Them companies wonder why they dont sell enough of their products. Ive been told by several monitor and TV companies and I QUOTE "" There is not enough demand for it "" - END-QUOTE WTF ..!!??
Vizio M65-C1. 65" 4K, supports 4K 30 and 4K 60FPS, 1080p at 120Hz, perfect black uniformity, 10-bit panel with excellent color accuracy, 18ms input lag. 18ms. Full-array backlight, excellent native contrast. Comes with a Qwerty keypad on the back of the remote for easier searches for content. The perfect gaming TV already exists, and I love it.
the new LG TVs like uk6540 have input lag of about 13-14ms on game mode. And it doesn’t have nano cell technology. So I don’t get the point of this nano cell technology and if it’s even worth forking out the extra cash for it.
That would be a dream :-) I seriously doubt that there ever will be a device that combines a TV with a Gaming monitor without marketing deception. Gaming is technically too complicated for a TV.
While we're at it, tell them to use a multiple instead of just straight upscaling when it comes up to low res gaming. I'm bringing 240p-480p to 960p and the picture is absolutely mind blowing for retro gaming. This post from a proud OSSC owner. : )
In my experience with LG TVs (I've owned 3) labeling the HDMI port as PC rather than Games Console will DRAMATICALLY reduce processing and input lag regardless of whichever picture profile used,
Finally a gaming tv! Ive been waiting 11 years to finally play Super Mario 64! I cant wait I told my family Itll be worth waiting rather then playing on a normal tv.
That's great, but you could have just gotten a CRT TV which are cheap or even free. Also, even though most modern TVs still support analog inputs such as composite and s-video, there is still gonna be input lag because the TV has to convert a analog signal to digital. And retro games look utter shit on modern TVs.
This nanocell series from LG is a good full screen cartoon TV. Maybe ok for gaming not sure, but what I can tell you is that this is not a good TV for Netflix or movies. The haloing, white corners and light streamers from base will make you cry! I bought this TV for movies and hate it! No back light filter at all. Keep looking, this LCD LED is not the one to buy. I did and regret it
@@DanyTheGripper thank you for the heads up! It's a little late but atleast now I know the reason for the horrible picture. I dont know why they make so many different models of same TV, sucks for consumer
Plasmas have refresh rates of 600 hz to 840hz. This does NOT equal to frame rates. Different technology vs LCDs, of course the trade off was more power consumption, possibility of burned-in images and diminishing blacks over time. Google it.
@John Akagami when you spend that much on a TV you are not going to tor around and go yeah it is bad, I am sure it is great for you buddy and I am glad, but I see the 866 every day next to the xh80, 85 the Samsung q70, q60 and it is awful playing the sme content, the light bloom is awful and this is on every size, but enjoy it man and do not listen to me as you have it now, I am only trying to warn someone thinking of it
I have a 49 inch LG TV and I tested the input lag using my Wii U. I checked the timing between the screen and Gamepad and yes, noticeable lag on it. Luckily that was fixed when I switched the TV to game mode! I do like the idea of this nano cell TV, hopefully we’ll still see this when 8K comes!
Your numbers on input lag don't match what rtings came up with in their testing (your results are slightly over double their 15.1 ms for 4k @ 60hz in game mode). Just curious as to why that is...??? Edit: 1080p @ 60hz was 15 ms btw Edit 2: www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/sj8500
maybe linus is also gaming so just the gpu already needs 16.67ms to render the frame... and pretty sure rtings uses a better method to measure input lag, not with just a regular camera : p
slopedarmor Rtings DOES indeed use a better method, I just wanted to see if Linus would reply (which, of course, he didn't). I'm not the only one to call them out over this and I haven't seen any replies as of yet.
I think the 2017 vizio p-series is probably one of the best. 12.2 ms of input lag at 1080/120hz. 14-15 otherwise and has as high as 10000:1 contrast with local dimming (almost 10x this tv)
Input lag is much higher using 4K HDR though. I think it's aroud 60 ms or so which is among the slowest compared to the competition. Not that most people would even notice however.
I have been running all my machines with 46" to 55" tvOS for years in surround. I have always loved having 9.5ft of desktop while gaming. I'll be grabbing these as well. I just hope we get better cables to handle bandwidth so we can get higher frames in 4K
With OLED technology, sub pixel brightness changes near the minimum brightness, do change slower than IPS panels, the most important aspect is the hardware driving the panel.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw it. You'd think whoever edited it would've told'em and have them do the scene over again or at least got rid of that horrible zoom...It's almost like they were zooming in on purpose.
@@Vinnay94 Plasma and CRT both perform worse than OLED in terms of long term image retention, leaving retention artifacts sooner than their OLED counterparts.
I use an LG TV from last year (UH661V, 49") for PC gaming. It has no noticeable input lag (or maybe just a tiny bit) when playing high paced games. It probably won't be good enough for pro gamers, but for me it's perfectly fine.
I have a LG 43UJ651V that I use for gaming, it's not quite good enough for FPS games but racing games work fine, sometimes I pick the 4k 60Hz screen over my 3440x1440 100Hz ultrawide
Funny you say that after a sale at Meijer, 10% team discount, plus $20 dollar Santa bucks, and $10 off total basket (ik that's a lot lol) I got it for $493!
Just bought a samsung uhd smart tv 3 weeks ago. Has a game mode which eliminates most lag which is great for consoles. But I was surprised to find it has a unadvertised PC mode which eliminates all lag (it auto detected this mode for the PC input). In PC mode there appears to be no processing at all on the tv's end (other than active contrast being the only adjustable significant setting) pretty much eliminating any lag at all. Wasn't an expensive screen either, $600 canadian.
Samsung had a 20 MS tv... this thing is too slow. My slower Sony TV is like 30-33MS, which is still faster than anything LG has. Why is this thing supposed to be fast at nearly 40? Even 30 is too much. Actually 20 is the bare minimum for enjoying computer games and shooters. Especially if you are used to 1 ms at 144 hz.
Rtings measure lg sj8500 input lag 15ms. Not sure about your monitor do you speak 1ms response time or input lag? Lg oled has 0.1ms response time but input lag 21ms.
linus doesn't really use the best method to measure input delay... also he measures it during gaming, if they are gaming at 60hz that means 16.67ms of lag is because the gpu needs to render the frame first. Probably also a few ms of lag for the cpu and maybe even the mouse. Personally I have a 55" LG b7v oled with 21ms input delay and almost instant response time, as a PC monitor actually : )
i think he generally does a good job in informing, versus enticing in the thumbnails. but then, I don't define something as click bait unless it way over-promises, and way under-delivers.
I have a 47" LG SMart TV running at a consistent 60fps & 1080P with no trouble at all on my NVidia 1050 4GB GPU. OK sure, it has lag which for gaming sucks, but I'm used to it & it's not that bad. I do have a 24" 2nd monitor with a great display which will run at the same specs with no lag at all but it's 24", which is literally 1/4 the screen size. And 47" is AMAZING for doing EVERYTHING! The colour & crispness of the screen are perfectly sharp, clear w/ fantastic pic quality for movies & gaming. I mean it's beautiful doing EVERYTHING. I LOVE it. At 47", I will NEVER go back to anything smaller & cannot understand why anyone wants to use small 24, 27 or even 32" monitors when they can see & do so much more with something like this. Why have the TV / Monitor makers NOT made 42; 47; 52 & 65 gaming monitors by now? It's NOT like they can't do it & they should be cheaper than Smart TV's, especially when you don't need the TV part at all. I watch Netflix on my puter & don't even bother with TV any more. The ONLY thing that bothers me about this Smart TV is the small lag when I press the mouse in games. As I said, it's tolerable so get rid of that & OMG, yeah, perfect. The picture, performance & what you see on the screen is rock solid, sharp with awesome colours including blacks. I also draw 3D CAD & that is also amazing on such a large format. I just can't go back to anything smaller than 47" so what can I do? I NEED a gaming monitor that I can work on as well. At almost 6 years old, it's almost time for a new monitor & puter rig & I do NOT want to buy another Smart TV; I want a gaming monitor that is at least 47" & 120 - 144 Refresh rate with NO LAG. What is there at the moment? So far, nothing. I am waiting for the NVidia gaming monitors to come out, but I know they will be soooo pricy & this one was worth $2,000.00 when I got it new. I can see myself spending that again, but no way can I afford no $4,000.00 for a monitor. So what is this gaming / 3D CAD girl to do?
I still love my 2016 55" Samsung KS8000. rtings.com tested the input lag in game mode to be 20ms. I love playing games on it, and HDR still works in game mode!
But the image retention(burn-in) from an OLED isn't ideal for gaming where a HUD could be in the same place for long periods of time. I had that problem with the plasma tv I had before. OLED is hands down the best choice for movies right now, but there are better options for gaming.
Scott Musselwhite LG's OLED panels do not perform at 100% brightness, so the aging of the film is not accelerated when it's in use. All signs of short term image retention disappear within seconds (similar to IPS) and today's OLEDs execute a pixel orbiting routine during stand by, so you don't have to worry about permanent image retention at all. Burn in used to be so bad for CRT and Plasma, that you can see the patterns even when the TV is off, but for OLED this is absolutely not the case. The OLED panel has a 100k hour lifespan, so you can use it for 10 years without any issues.
I never buy iPhones, because from my experience they had bad battery life, and I used to complain to them about it... and they hated me. Then they released one with good battery life and I was like, hook me up! And they gave me one... If only I was LinusTechTips.
Question... the LG nano 4k... why is the dimensions of the 86" version 75.8" x 38" and the dimensions of the 75" version 66" x 38" ?????? how can BOTH tv's share the SAME height yet differ by about 10 inches on the length????? IS the image distorted on one or the other by comparison??????
My 7 year old LG 42" TV has no input lag and the picture quality is comparable to the Apple Cinema display and I use it for photo editing as well as gaming. It has never been used as a TV... Input lag seems to be only a problem on new tv`s and it is so bad that sound is out of sync compared to the stereo connected (that means 100-250ms or more). To get the sound synchronized you must route the sound to come from the TV...
Linus Team, please make a video comparing the Vizio Quantum X and the TCL 6 Series; breaking down their feature sets and value per dollar (Considering that the Quantum 65" is on sale for $2100 & the 6 Series 65" is on sale for $699)
Check out the TCL55S405. All of the same features on a TN vs an IPS panel, so the only sacrifice is viewing angle. The price is between $400-$450. Input lag of 14.9-15.1ms. 4:4:4 HDR 8-Bit.
I swear RUclips keeps unsubscribing me from my channels... I was unsubbed from this one, when I know I haven't. missing lot of content from my previous subs, dafuq RUclips!!!
Seriously. The 2016 ue43ks7500 was easily the best set yet for gaming. 25ms response but much smaller curved screen that uses a better 'super-lcd' tech than LG's nano cell. proper hdr support.
Linus your a amazing group of people and you inspired me to build my own computer and not use my xbox no more and to go to school for server repair so i can build my own in my house
I'm still using my 2013 Sony TV with 21ms in game or graphics mode. I have no reason to upgrade until 4k HDR OLED is fully sorted, and hopefully variable framerates are more mainstream in TVs

They literally had to just take 4 20 inch 1080p tvs and stick them together and boom. you got yourself a 4k tv

I seriously doubt that there ever will be a device that combines a TV with a Gaming monitor without marketing deception.
In my experience with LG TVs (I've owned 3) labeling the HDMI port as PC rather than Games Console will DRAMATICALLY reduce processing and input lag regardless of whichever picture profile used,
Why can't anyone make a TV/monitor above 35" that have a high refresh rate?

Finally a gaming tv! Ive been waiting 11 years to finally play Super Mario 64! I cant wait I told my family Itll be worth waiting rather then playing on a normal tv.
CRTs were faster...
Dont have scart
That's great, but you could have just gotten a CRT TV which are cheap or even free. Also, even though most modern TVs still support analog inputs such as composite and s-video, there is still gonna be input lag because the TV has to convert a analog signal to digital. And retro games look utter shit on modern TVs.

Woohooooo. 5M subs. Congrats man.
1:06 Dat shine effect doe.
Your numbers on input lag don't match what rtings came up with in their testing (your results are slightly over double their 15.1 ms for 4k @ 60hz in game mode). Just curious as to why that is...???
Edit: 1080p @ 60hz was 15 ms btw
Edit 2: www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/sj8500
maybe linus is also gaming so just the gpu already needs 16.67ms to render the frame...
and pretty sure rtings uses a better method to measure input lag, not with just a regular camera : p
slopedarmor Rtings DOES indeed use a better method, I just wanted to see if Linus would reply (which, of course, he didn't).

Not that most people would even notice however.
yeah true, but hdr gaming is still pretty niche so it probably wouldn't bother most
I have been running all my machines with 46" to 55" tvOS for years in surround.

The LG sk8500 has a 13ms input lag in game mode
4:00 If you had the monitors connected to each other, the '2nd' monitor will be the slower one. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.
The OLED actually has a 120 Hz mode and according to the Leo Bodnar test, the input lag is 21 ms.
Personally I have a 55" LG b7v oled with 21ms input delay and almost instant response time, as a PC monitor actually : )
the oled does not have a true 120 hz mode, it's marketing, all tv's are 60 hz.
I have the B7V OLED as PC monitor. It does have true 120hz mode, but 1080p only. So I never use it (I did try it) because I'm always on 4K60.

Would love an update for newer versions

The OLED has a 120 Hz mode with 21 ms input lag.
But the image retention(burn-in) from an OLED isn't ideal for gaming where a HUD could be in the same place for long periods of time. I had that problem with the plasma tv I had before. OLED is hands down the best choice for movies right now, but there are better options for gaming.
Scott Musselwhite
LG's OLED panels do not perform at 100% brightness, so the aging of the film is not accelerated when it's in use.
Can anyone link me to the short movie "Pencil." ? I can't seem to find it. 1:44
