- Mientras hacen las compras para sus respectivas familias en Navidad el arquitecto Frank Raftis (De Niro) y la bella artista gráfica Molly Gilmore (Streep) se cruzan y confunden sus regalos de Navidad. Lo que comienza como una amistad agradable se convierte en un romance. Ambos sienten que lo que están haciendo no es correcto, son dos buenas personas, que no desean hacer daño a nadie, no obstante se aman a pesar de todo y de todos. Sus matrimonios hace tiempo que dejaron de existir. Pero ellos siguen enamorados y no podrán luchar contra ese amor.

Para todos los adornos de 1984, Falling in Love es un retroceso a las películas de 1940 y 1950 como Brief Encounter y An Affair to Remember , completadas con dos estrellas (Robert De Niro y Meryl Streep), un romance lindo y en ciernes, no importa qué tanto intentan los protagonistas evitarlo (ambos se han establecido en matrimonios de rutina), y los entresijos de dos personas que sí se están enamorando. A veces divertido, a veces triste, a veces bellamente romántico, a veces triste y a veces doloroso, Falling in Love toca todas las notas correctas y teje su hechizo sin esfuerzo. Y parte de lo que lo hace fácil es la puntuación incandescente y hermosa de Dave Grusin.
Nadie hizo este tipo de película romántica mejor que Dave Grusin. Captura de manera simple y efectiva cada estado de ánimo de la película, con varias melodías asombrosamente hermosas que se abren paso a lo largo de la partitura, junto con algunas melodías clásicas y optimistas de Grusin.
