  • With car prices skyrocketing over the last couple years nearly all interesting and fun cars have become prohibitively expensive. Today I showcase one that has not: the MkII Toyota Celica Supra. Have people been sleeping on these?

    Once you start on the Toyota path you will never want to leave. The reliability of every part of the car is top notch on 80's Toyota's you fall in love with it and then every other car becomes disappointing to own after that. Proud owner of an 81 Celica GT hatch for 10 years now and a 87 MR2 for a lil bit now.

    This is maybe the best video I have ever seen on RUclips. It was everything I was looking for: A little sauce, a little sass, and a whole lot of deep technical info and real life experience.
    I came because I fucking love this car, the first 30 second I was like “Wtf is this, is this the right video?” And then…the music hits and you can’t look away for 18 minutes.
    Bravo.

    I got my 83 from it sitting for 10 years. Was able to trace back the original owner and obtain photos and bring it to him. Was about a 3 year process from 2018-2021 of getting all the kinks out. Got it for 2.3k and put around $5k into it. A lot of work but its a great reliable car now for the weekends and was def worth it.

    It's not overlooked, it IS a classic and the prices match.
    I've never remotely seen an old Celica LET ALONE a Supra trim in the wild or at car show before. They are just that rare. I love them to death, but the MK3 is the only thing you can really get your hands on now and yeah it's heavier, but a lot more luxurious. I don't mind my choice of the 88' NA MK3 at all. Though with an MK2 you would stand out stand even more though both those models are almost unheard of at this point. I think we have the same exact passion for our cars. They are the most driver-centric cars on the road that are still reliable. The intro to "The Raccoons" is also greatly appreciated!!!

    • @BRAINFxck10
      @BRAINFxck10 Год назад

      Nah…Supras are cool but they’re not the most driver centric cars cuz after the 2nd gen they got too heavy. Miata, S2000, MR2, CRX, NSX, Integra/Civic Type R, AE86, all these cars are more driver centric than the Supra and just as reliable.

    • @rushnerd
      @rushnerd Год назад

      @@BRAINFxck10 I don't think weight has anything to do with a car being driver centric or not? The MK3 and MK4 are like a Jet fighter cockpit with everything facing you.
      I have a 01' GT-S Celica as well, but I would say my MK3 is even more driver focused than even that thing is. Obviously the Celica is an entire ton lighter, but both are equally as fun.

    I am living your car life brother ! I have the same exact car - 82 Terra Cotta Manual Celica Supra. It had the seats you have, but I got a pair of the bucket seats on Ebay from another MK2 and so glad I did. I had had the same exact car years ago in California (with the seats you have), and loved it and it was the car I always regretted selling, Found another one of the same exact cars again during Covid in great shape and had to have it. (same price you did). That inline 6 cylinder, double over head cam is just amazing. My air conditioner and stereo don't work, but not worried now because the AC would just drain power, and the stereo would just cover over that magnificent sound of the engine. I'm happy every time I drive it and is just great on the hilly, curvy roads of Pennsylvania. I love the analog, naturally aspirated experience. You have to drive one to understand,. And same thing, at Cars and Coffee events - I see a lot of Porsches and Ferraris(granted, wonderful cars), but not one of these. And every time I take it out on the road, it always gets love from people. They are wildly under-valued, but who cares - I'm never selling it !

    So great-my first car(high school car) was an 83 almost exactly like this-the original door handles and shade making wing at the top of the all black hatch. It had the bigger over fenders, black interior with the air-adjustable sport seats and analogue gauges. Mine had no pinstriping and sat slightly lower, but otherwise looked like this. Great first car for kid who wants to drive hard, but shouldn't go too fast. LSD, straight six, FR layout, and a great grand touring car that girls did not mind being in.

    Since I move back here from the UK, I've seen one of these in rough condition in someone's backyard.
    I remember back in 82, I flew back to the UK to attend a football school for a week and visit my relatives. The Pro player who was running the course, Picked me up from the train station in Ipswich. He had a Celica (sell ee kaa).I enjoyed the ride and he also took me back to the station.
    When I got back to the states, I was driving mum and dad's crappy Buick X body and I stopped at the local Toyota dealer. I walked out with a sexy brochure but as a 16 year old, there was no way I could afford one.
    I moved back to the UK a couple of years later but they were well out of my price range at the time. I did go to a dealer that had a second hand MR2 MKI version and took it for a test drive. I couldn't get a high enough trade in on my Escort RS1600i to make the deal viable.
    I'd love to find a MK II Supra but for now, I'll make do with my '12 Genesis coupe with 27k on the clock. It's as close as I can get back to the old RWD days and I can blow away most people from the lights.

The son is actually what introduced me to the 5 cylinder turbo and right away I fell in love with the 5 cylinder sound ❤. I spent $8,000 on my 88' MK3 two years ago, so you can have perspective. NA Auto 115Kmiles and it was a garage baby. Was in incredible shape, but just being out in the wild a few months all the bumpers need paint and pretty much I need to slap down for a $5K paintjob on her. If there wasn't enough I've already poured $13K in her on misc stuff and cosmetics/leds. You got yourself gold there, I'm just glad I only had to replace leaking power steering hoses and not the entire rack, that must have hurt. You aren't going to find a more fun car though. NEVER let her go. Seems like EVERY MK3 Supra owner who lets them go (95% of them) regrets it and loves them to death. I cannot do that nor would I ever get my money back!

    While you do mention the low power being kind of a nice thing, I think they really needed to bring the 3.0 Litre version, the 6M-GE, that Japan got to North America. The 6M-GE gave you 200HP, which I think would be perfect. 140HP is pretty uninspiring for a sporty car, and not a particularly light sporty car. I owned an 82, and I loved many aspects of it, but the lack of power was pretty funny. It is a beautifully designed engine though, Yamaha/Toyota made a smooth unit.
