Yeezy Explained by a Fashion Designer

- Today we have a look back at one of the most influential brands to ever hit the streetwear scene. Before there was Yeezy, Kanye struggled for many years to leave his mark in the fashion industry and he was met with a lot of pushback. After 15 years, he finally managed to say he made it. But...
Which Designer should I cover next?
Jacquemus 😁
RICK OWENS
Related to this vid... Virgil or Pharrell
Would love a video about issey miyake
Jerry Lorenzo
It’s a shame you used such a sensationalized tone in this video as it discredits both ye and the Yeezy team(s). A lot of research, development and artistic output of what Yeezy actually did is ignored in this video. I’m in no place to change your perspective as you’re entitled to your own opinion ( we’re dealing with clothes here at the end of the day )but I’d suggest more critically looking at Yeezy. The framing of commodity, the critical perspective on the function of our clothes, what is luxury, classism, etc . These are some of many things they’ve explored and established grounds on. I understand if you might not be stimulated by the work but that’s partly because we’re bombarded by an insanely fast system of changing aesthetics. Yeezy stood as an actually relevant slow fashion brand at one point, the first possibly. Their whole thing is primitive futurism. I could go on, I mean season 4 alone birthed skims (no discredit to them either, great innovation for their knits).
The row is great. It shows a perfect example of Eurocentric design that we are used to and it’s something people can digest and appreciate.
But Yeezy pushed the industry to think beyond. It was not palatable, there was real messaging behind all of the clothes and performance and yet culturally and financially they set an example of what’s possible.
Every artistic endeavor is for one’s self. One way or the other.
Seeing Yeezy as just a merch brand is an easy way to round out a video and deliver a very superficial perspective. But maybe take a second look to understand what’s going on or maybe deliver a more open tone to encourage people’s own interpretation of shows and media.
I understand your focus is on pattern cutting and such. But I think design can only be as good as the intent behind it.
Thank you, you said what I felt but couldn't put into words.
I wished you made a video about Yeezy, your perspective is very interesting.
The colors had the whole fashion world in a chokehold for a hot minute IMO
agreed
personally, that's what got me interested in the brand; kanye's music is whatever, alot of the yeezy seasons are meh, but his use of color is honestly very refreshing.
They still do
@@loafheresy5729his music is whatever? lol u sound like a complete🤡
@@loafheresy5729 no way you called kanye's music whatever
Calling those collections boring is crazy
the newest merch line is still unique imo because he’s selling those items for 20$. basically anyone else would sell 100% cotton items with a designer silhouette for a lot more
I hate to say but as a consumer I have affection for Kanye, he is definitely flawed but he doesn’t come across as disingenuous. There are so many things he does that are out of line but I translate it as passion ,,,, he is passionate . That’s probably why he continues to connect with is fans and somehow remains somewhat successful.
you hate to say? I love Kanye and say it with my chest
You cant excuse racism saying it is « passion ». Everyone knows the guy’s passionate, but now he is also problematic by so much things and, as I see it, a danger to the culture.
@@MaximeModel you have no single idea what the hell you are talking about, he was never being racist, at all
This entire video approaches the topic in bad faith imo. Completely disregards the trends, innovation, and Kanye’s own goals - often oversimplifying like with the fashion superstar team “only putting together T-shirts.” Those t-shirts were the start of their career and they were learning.
Those guys learned the culture and have routinely all tapped into it to control trends and maintain the most successful brands in terms of connecting with the public. Yeezy set and maintained trends, created mainstream appeal for unconventional looks, and tapped into the masses rather than looking down upon them like most pretentious designers.
Also, it’s crazy to consider his current brand a failure when, for the past decade, Kanye himself has been saying all that he wanted to do was make everything affordable and accessible through mass production and a $20 price tag.
Haven’t watched any of your other videos but something tells me there wasn’t much research put into this one.
Yeah he isn't tapped in as much as he thinks
I would disagree with you about yeezy becoming "Just another merch brand". Yes, it became a merch line, but why did you decide not to break it down and tell about innovative one-seem shirts technology?
yeezy fell off after 2022 all the clothes are just merchandise the only one that inst was the gosha collab and even that is trash cannot compare anything to yeezy season 9. kanye was in italy in 2023 and in dubai and still couldn’t find anything inspiring like YZYSZN9 the only thing was sock shoes which came and went i see nobody wearing them and i can say this as i bought them and a friend too and he doesnt even wear it.
@backw00ds the newest merch line is still unique imo because he's selling those items for 20$. basically anyone else would sell 100% cotton items with a designer silhouette for a lot more. As well as the one-seem having a much deeper meaning than most understand
@@kuraido3766 still dont change the fact yeezy fell off
10:11 Hey bit of criticism -- YGEBB was not an extension of Season 9, rather Yeezy Gap's development followed Season 8 in 2020 with Balenciaga coming in 2022, before Season 9.
for all the only clothes before i guess gap came in who was the supplier because i thought gap had always been w ye
😂😂 you’re failing to mention that kanye is the person who made this entire aesthetic popular for more than over a decade and demna and Virgil both took inspiration from ye demna more than anyone …
kanye brought this whole aesthetic that you keep calling shit season after season 😂 it’s ironic because that’s what was being said at the time about his clothes yet everyone in the big fashion houses stole that same swag
Making something popular is very different from designing it. But this video is not about his cultural influence, rather, how his work was made.
@ well I would disagree fashion is about political expression expression of self and can be used as a form of art like to critique the collection when it quite literally was innovative for multiple different reasons from the cuts to the oversized and cropped fits to the color pallets and the materials everything was made from a wabi sabi principal of simplicity …
Yeezy is a protest to whatever you think you’re fashion should be and look like
“If this collection was done by any other no name designer we wouldn’t be talking about it” obviously 😂… That’s why they hire big names for their creative directors.
There’s fashion house like Plagiarist who put on an absolute masterclass on how to get it out the mud and do it from from the ground up, IfSixwasnine and kmrii which are arguably better than any mainstream fashion house but doesn’t get the same recognition.
I feel like the type of people Kanye was going against was people like you who point analyse and point out every reason why Ye and his clothes are trash. I’m not a big fan of his pieces or brand but I think you kinda prove Ye’s point of view by discrediting him because he’s not traditionally in fashion and oversimplifying everything. I’m not saying Yeezy is good but it definitely proves his POV. On the flip side, if Raf Simons or Margiela made this collection, it would probably be critically acclaimed.
P.S. I love your content and analysis btw
@ exactly what i was saying
Kanye lorde vetements hoodie pic. Kanye was first inspired by early demna its plain as day.
I feel like you have oversimplified the designs and zooming into the wrong aspects . Just sounds like you’re shitting on Kanye so far but I’m only half way in. 4:50
Not at all, I respect what he did and he was heading in the right direction, trying to compete with other fashion brands. Too bad he slipped and I'm not sure there's a comeback. The shoes were great though, but since no one has looked exclusively at the clothes I thought I'd jump in.
Kanye was cancelled at his prime as a designer. Season9 had so much potential but now the kanye we knew is gone
Honestly even if I don’t love individual pieces the whole aesthetic is great to me. I also love some of his cuts and color pallets more than other companies. I do have to agree that later on for the YZY Gap and by extension the Balenciaga line made for more interesting and innovative pieces. I still got love for the earlier work though especially the boots. Holy I love those boots
People still can’t fathom his impact and he doesnt get the credit he deserves he changed the landscape of fashion forever.
Damn it would be interesting if you covered the stuff he's done with Gosha. I find it a biit boring but would've been interested on your take especially w his new collection.
Didn’t mention the Louis Vutton collaboration.. had to leave the video
A.P.C, LV, Bape + we not even mentioning the brands he helped skyrocket to fame.

this was a great video! the pacing, the storytelling, the sound, the technique breakdown. green lights all the way through. fantastic work :)
I wish you looked into Kanye's clothing from the 2019-2020 "Wyoming era". Its arguably his most well made and unique clothes with the many different vibrant and bold colors, shapes, and designs. A lot of the pieces are 1/1's and samples that were never meant for retail production, but it highlights a lot of creative freedom and just going wild with ideas he had at the time. I highly recommend looking into it.
What an amazing video!!! This content is gold!! Keep going guys! 👏🏼
The intro is moronic to the point where it makes the rest of the vid unwatchable
Exactly
How is it moronic? i felt like he got to the point pretty well
I wanna say the he is to an extent. a friend said it best in which he is to the fashion industry as Isabella d'Este was during the Italian Renaissance. Employing underground to big name designers from different mediums to both build "yeezy" and cultivate those individuals who ideas were worth having their shown to the masses (e.g. Mowalola, Ding Yun Zhang, etc). The differences in collections, I believe, directly reflects 1)who's current state of mind and attitude within his creativity 2)the people surrounding him influencing such designs 3) money (kinda)
He is a good designer, his materials are higher quality. My nephew had a few oversized sweater like. I like it. Reminds me of 90's .
I miss season 2 style clothing so much 😭😭😭
I often compare Kanye incursion into the fashion industry like Shaquille O’neil DJing . They need a whole team to support them but bring a breath of fresh air with their overall popularity.
Honestly..I'm a huge Ye (the artist) enthusiast and lover.. however as a Fashion designer myself, I body say the man is a visionary and Hella serious footwear designer and musical genius...
This is literally the reason why even if you study art… it doesn’t make you an artist
I’m not sure if ye will ever reach those heights again but it’s possible. I feel like he thrives off controversy and people counting him out.
what does adidas have to do w the clothing is that not gap?
Yeezy is the father of fashion
Best vid so far
Innovative enough for people to forget how influential he was. Never seen so many earth tones in my life. Imagine if he never married kim????
Kanye’s been the trendsetter of various things throughout art. The pastel colours and rough nature of his first Yeezy drop was genius and a breath of fresh air in fashion back then. The “WET” tank top alone went crazy this year, and it was also seen worn by many celebrities. Calling yourself a fashion designer holds no merit when you terribly judge a successful fashion designer for the most bias takes. Kanye switching from music to fashion was a big deal and a lot of higher ups doubted him. Look at the dog shit “fashion” Balenciaga puts out. There’s levels to this and Kanye’s been setting trends
Really enjoy this video☺ You made it look so simple and you explained it well and coherent 👏👏 Great job 🔥
Much appreciated! It's a new format and it was scary to change it up this much. Glad it works
That was great! Loved the breakdowns in clo 3d.
Same! My bread and butter
great video ! felt like half the time it is
The correct question is : Was Kayne and his team, good designers. He didn't do it all by himself did he ? He definitely did no design many of the shoes.
Amazing analysis , amazing video

Combination of insecurity, deals getting dropped (even before 2022) and perfectionism stifling anything getting a real release

Great video 😊
Much appreciated!
whose connie?
Amazing vid man!
What a interesting take!
is always interesting to see opinions in these topics, and so mhh "complex" characters
The take with Yeezy is very biased too, as Kanye as a socialite and influencer, had a pop culture influence huge, so the opinions related to his influence and importance would be absolutely personal biased to each one opinion of their works and point of views.
And of course is not the same point in the bran of what was years ago and now, when people and companies were looking to work with and was a person that was able to work as a director, and be able to call and attract designers of very specialized skills and with a creative vision, plus the companies that would be interested in lead the technology and innovation to push the ideas of that team to the point of generate and build a discussion about aesthetics and consumers, to what is now that is a merch store where things are not innovative and are more a merch store for $20 that only will sell to die hard fans and the quality, fabrics and patters are... questionable.
Great video but I do believe that these clothes would still do great without Kanye, he’s really a great designer but if it wasn’t for help from people such as Greg Ross who’s clothes still look quite similar still. I’m sure Yeezy would look a tad different if not a lot from what we know from them. 🤟
the images coming from the camera into the foreground gives me a headache starting at 1:30 plz no
Season 4 was elite
You really skip Bape Collab and Pastelle

Good day.
W ye.
This whole fashion industry is really weird. Like look at the designs common they are so awfull 😂
I think when you made this video your looking at the brand in a sense of todays standard
.
We gotta look at the fashion industry as a whole at the time of yeezys first years.
.
The entire industry and general fashion trend at the time was maximalism and logos.
.
Ye stepped back and focused more on simplistic design and form of how the fabric drapes on your body.
.
Look at how ye dressed during 2015 and you can see thats how many people dress today with some adjustments to shoes and baggy jeans.
.
The $20 clothes are supeising high quality for the low price the box t’s keep that yeezy aesthetic with thick material and the sweatpants only downside is having such a thin drawsting on the waist.
.
I think at this point ye switched focus to giving accessibility to high quality clothing to regular people
Yes he’s being very biased. Ye has had a huge impact on the fashion industry that will be felt for decades to come
Biased towards design analysis, damn right
Also one last thing i wanted to point out is that yzy i think fills the role of getting these young people into the fashion world.
.
I dont think its a coincidence how before the yzy x gap x balenciaga collab began the high fashion wave was just a small niche for these young people
.
It wasnt till after that collab that these young people started to take thier appearance more seriously and made it more mainstream to see the youngsters recognize stuff like rick margiela and so on and so forth
.
Finally theres a whole category for the quality of wholesale clothing/ small brands to use “yzy x gap quality” as a description for fabric quality
