  • My entire youth was spent being a PowerPC Mac user, I played around with Ubuntu 4.10 on PowerPC, but when Apple launched the Intel models, I became a full time Linux PC user as my daily drive.
With complications trying to run a company and edit videos on Linux in today's world, there are just too many issues and workarounds I need to do to accomplish simple tasks.
I can't get myself to switch to Windows with how bad it has become a data farm, rather than an operating system.
So, after 18 years, I've finally switched back to Mac.

Great stuff man. I also discovered Apple in the late 2000s (2008) with an ex-girlfriend. She had the late 2007 white MacBook. Man Mac OS X was a Mammoth leap beyond Windows in terms of beauty, speed, smoothness, user interface, and user experience, and stability. That thing ran circles around my custom built PC so much it floored me. Then I got an iPhone 3G… I haven’t looked back since. I just wished you got an M-series MacBook… you’ll understand what I mean when you do.

wait 1300$ for an intel macbook ? Those are considered as vintage by apple now.. you could have bought an M1 for like 900$. Which is 30 times faster

Canadian, our dollar is horrid. By comparison this is like $980 USD but there's also environmental taxes on top of that too because this country fucking sucks for taxes.
I also specifically went for Intel because of Linux and Windows. Parallels is great and all, but it's a subscription. And the standalone version you can buy out right is only the standard version which limits you to 4GB of RAM. Running Windows and Linux on bare metal with this will give me 16GB of RAM so I can do a lot more with this vs Apple Silicon.
If Parallels increases hardware allocation on the full paid version to more than 4GB of RAM and more than four cores, or if UTM gets hardware acceleration support, I would gladly switch, but right now Apple Silicon is a huge step backwards for what I need when it comes to Windows and Linux still.

I did, I still use Linux and Windows, it's just that macOS is now my main daily driver for everything. Cubic and NTLite don't work on macOS and are Linux and Windows specific so I need need those OS's as a tool for running those programs. VM support being super limited on Apple Silicon, running them on bare metal is a lot faster for what I need.
That's the whole point though, this is what I need, it's what actually works to accommodate how my digital life operates.

A little dramatic ain’t it just for a platform switch???

Why in the world would you buy an intel macbook?!? You would have been far better off with an m1 macbook air!!! (which are always on sale for 750 usd brand new at best buy) Apple silicon has dedicated video processing cores which allows for editing speeds that you will never get on an intel macbook, and is just 1000x better at everything. Battery life is unbelievably long, the displays on the apple silicon macbook pros are stunning, the port selection is way more generous -- I just don't understand why you would not get a refurbed 14" m1 macbook pro! It really would not have been that much more money at all and would have been way worth it. I feel horrible for you that you bought this laptop, seriously what drove you to make that choice???

Apple Silicon can't run Linux or Windows on bare metal, and Parallels stand alone paid version only allows you to use 4 cores and 4GB of RAM. UTM also doesn't support hardware acceleration yet so both are not viable options for Linux or Windows.
I have github repositories for custom Windows and Linux ISO, so I need Windows and Linux specific tools with at least 8GB of RAM to do the bare minimum when modifying the ISOs. 16GB is ideal which this laptop has, but I need bare metal installs to use all of it. Can't do that on Apple Silicon with Parallels or UTM yet. Once either of those programs mature more, I'll switch. But until then, Apple Silicon is a huge step back for me as I would have to kill off my github repos because they can't be compiled with macOS as the tools are Windows and Linux specific.
