I love that! I’ve often thought Beethoven’s 9th symphony is a spirit that rose out o LVB at the time of the French Revolution, and soars back to earth during WW1 and 2, ands rises again in Japan at New Year and now flies over Europe.

I went to a decidedly average (boys only) public school in the 1950's but it's one, extraordinary, redeeming feature was that three times a week the entire school would be assembled to listen to a piece of classic music, including Beethoven, with the head then explaining the significance of each passage. He would also write an entire Gilbert and Sullivan type musical once a year, that the school would perform. Thank-you, Mr. Clark, for what you gave us boys. 60 years later I am still listening to the pieces you recommended to us.

Those that advocate for them argue that both girls and boys do much better at school in a single sex environment, as they are not distracted by the opposite sex. Of course, there is a counter argument that it does not equip children for the adult world but both systems continue to coexist.

Sometimes it's acceptable after the first movement. You have to feel if it's appropriate most cases no. I been to some where is was acceptable. College concerts you will find the practice . My piano teacher took me to a concert and told me not to clap between movements and little you know the audience clapped after the first movement. So much for that example. 73

Without a doubt, this is the very best version of this piece. Zimerman is absolutely FLAWLESS and nails every single note in his execution. It's hard to believe, but I dare say this is better than the famous Van Cliburn Russian performance 60 some odd years ago (which was fabulous and considered the pinnacle version for many decades). I love Zimmerman's interpretation of this piece. So many highlights, it's incredible.
One example I can site is his use of staccato on the left with lyrical phrasing on the right. It's *incredibly* difficult to pull this off! Imagine the school-age challenge of patting your head while rubbing a circle on your stomach and interpreting this odd contradiction on a grand piano. His punch on the strong chords, and his very light trill phrasing between two notes.... SUPER FAST... SUPER LIGHT... and not a single note is dropped even at this near absent volume. The technique Zimmerman is using is way above masterclass IMO. And it's also a joy watching Leonard Berstein conduct. This is so incredible! A+++

But an angel, he was not, if the biographical movie - "Immortal Beloved", is in any way accurate. He was a jealous, envious controlling tyrant. I wouldn't dream of treating people and my own siblings the way he did. And it had absolutely nothing toi do with his deafness or that people couldn't understand his pain and inner turmoil due to his deafness.
Certainly won't stop me from listening to his music though. It's divine, and I think, divinely inspired.

Recording engineers deserve a mention - as does Leonard Bernstein for his incredible dynamism and control - the tempo being exactly right for this masterpiece. The power generated by the orchestra is incredible... OK it's a good sound recording, but there is an extra dimension going on between Bernstein, Zimerman and the Vienna Phil. that elevates this rendition of the Emperor to a completely new level. Check out Zimermans' second movement solo, each single note varies slightly in time interval from the previous one - no other concert pianist has ever dared to make such a bold interpretation ...wonderful! Not strictly ballroom you might say - but Zimerman is the ultimate showman after all.

For a split second you think he slipped in his timing but then you realize it was intentional and that it was thought out and done on purpose. What I am trying to say is this thought process happens in my mind every time I listen to it and it somehow makes it even better. Like it's more personal.

You probably know that the number of viewings is far less than Bernstein/Zimerman who have attracted nearly 3 million on youtube - and there is the clue. It is hard to believe that both performances were with the Vienna Philarmonic! The playing of Gulda - especially the demanding Adagio - is very wooden, just like the orchestra which may be due to the influence of the conductor? There is no passion, dynamics or excitement that you hear with Bernstein in this wonderful interpretation. As a classically trained musician I could not listen to Gulda from choice, it is too painful to my ear. This performance by Bernstein/Zimerman will probably never be equalled, and I think many other music lovers agree with me.

It has often been stated that music can touch the soul. Mr.Zimmerman has captured the soul of Beethoven in his interpretation of this Concerto. To me when I hear this particular Concerto I feel it is an Auto Biography by Beethoven in Music instead of words. The music creates images of people and places long ago. It is a wonderfull story. I have been listening to the Emperor Concerto for many decades now and each time I hear it, it is like the Very First Time. It is simply amazing how it stirs some of ones deepest emotions!

    Gracias !

One of my favourite moments in all music. 07:47. It's so mysteriously brilliant.

Zimmerman is one of the greatest piano player of the century. He puts his soul on the interpretation. He's fabulous and I could listen him day and night with no stop!

I get it, I really do. I could never explain the beauty of this to someone who doesn’t get classical music. Yet I know my fellow classical music lovers that post, can understand and feel this music the way I do.

I was introduced to this concerto by my mother over 30 years ago and loved it immediately and still get just as excited to hear it now as I did then. It is by far one of the best pieces of music written. But what else would one expect from Beethoven.

21:50 is briefly the melody for "A Time For Us" from "West Side Story" written by Bernstein, who conducts here.

The most beautiful piece of music ever written? And this rendition, combination of pianist, conductor and orchestra... brings me to tears

I have exactly the same sentiment. I have never heard anything to surpass this - and Beethoven stands supreme.

I can hear that the start of the 3rd movement was probably an improvisation, something he experimented with before committing to it. You can hear this in some of his sonatas. This particular performance was the epitome of perfection, combining incredible skill, a superb orchestra, artful camera work and, of course, Bernstein himself. Bravo!
