It took me until just now to realize that Lister switching to a boiler suit for the Starbug years isn't a coincidence; he left his other jackets on _Red Dwarf_
Never thought of that, but it makes sense.
I like when Kryten talks to anyone not on the regular crew, he always affects this smoother more erudite tone.

Is it just me, or does that part about Kryten getting turned into a cube seem like a shout-out to "Top Secret!" ?
My favorite joke is something so subtle, I didn't catch it until about my fifth time watching the episode. When the guy is getting attacked by the psiren in the black box recording, just when all the red goo squirts all over the screen, you can barely hear him shouting "You squeezed all the ketchup out of me burger!"
Wow, I totally missed that. I know the last thing he screams is practically inaudible, so I'm guessing that's the line you're referring to.
7:50 just in case you're unaware, the ZX-81 was a British made micro-computer in the 80's. Very cheap for the time and was really just a glorified games machine.

I think the psiren calls Lister 'Dave' because Lister really wants Kryten to call him Dave as a sign of their friendship and his growing ability to break his programming so that's what's forefront in his mind. Thata incredibly sweet if so.

the straw thing reminds me of the doctor who villain Florence Finnegan who only appears in the episode "Smith and Jones".

This was the first episode of Red Dwarf I had seen. It was a rerun that was broadcast in the year that series 7 premiered. Just saw the title of the show in a TV guide with no description and it was enough for me to set aside time to watch it. Never turned back
You know, with how many changes they made here, I am surprised they didn't give it an elaborate new title, like "Starbug : Red Dwarf Phase II" or "Starbug : A Red Dwarf Story" . Also, the hands of the Psiren playing the guitar in the scene with two Listers are the hands of Phil Manzanera from the band Roxy Music, Grant and Naylor initially wanted to get Brian May of Queen fame, but he wasn't available, however his wife Anita Dobson had a cameo as Captain Tau.
I assumed that in the same way Lister likes to think he can play the guitar, Kryten likes to see himself as fully independent, the sort of being who would be able to treat Lister as an equal and call him Dave, so that's what the Psiren picks up when reading Kryten's mind.
If memory serves K-Y Jelly in buckets, is typically used for Veterinary & Animal Husbandry purposes.

I like to think the reason why Christine's backstory and appearance changed was because of the inquisitors death. Since he himself was erased from time, any changes made would by him would also be undone, thus why she and Lister used to date and why she changed. I'm probably looking into it too much but hey, it's possible
That would be a great theory except for 2 minor drawbacks.
1. Lister already mentioned his break up with kochanski in season 4 briefly in the episode DNA.

Now I realise that technically speaking that’s only one flaw but I thought it was such a big one that it was worth mentioning twice.
Just noticed that Lister's memories revive when he sees Rimmer.
Holly was right: Rimmer really is important psychologically for Lister.

As for great actors making cameos, Timothy Spall played the guy who called everyone 'Twonks' a few episodes back, he's an excellent & very well respected actor here
This was the first ever Red Dwarf episode I watched as a kid, scared the heck out of me! I still hear that weird noise they make.... almost chirping. Nice review! I'll keep watching.
Yeah same for me. This was the first episode I ever watched too. Actually it was my science teacher at school who showed it to the class for the last lesson of term. He was a big Red Dwarf fan I think. And it was probably the best thing a science teacher could do to get students into science. I've always remembered that episode and have only recently started watching Red Dwarf properly. And I love it! Mr Hall, you were the best teacher ever! Smegging awesome

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation, but glad I'm able to help in a small way.
Jenny Agutter- definitely a great cameo. She was also in 1976's scifi dystopian "Logan's Run". Not quite a dystopia in a conventional sense, but getting Peter Ustinov along with a few dozen cats made my day for that one. (Hopefully not a big spoiler but I won't say who he is and what he does and when he shows up. And cats are everywhere. Like sand.)
Season 6 I recall was hit or miss, but "Prisens" is a top-10 episode for me. Great innovating on a time tested concept.
Apparently Anita Dobson (Captain Tau) tried to get her husband Brian May to do the guitar playing, but he refused as he didn't want to have make up put on his hands.
Brian May was the one approached first, and he declined...but his wife (Dobson) said she was available to take part in the show. They would have given her a better part if they had known well enough in advance.
Jenny Agutter did a fair bit of TV in the 90s and 00s yes, she was a regular in The Alexi Sayle Show (sketch comedy) at the same time as this appearance and she was later a lead character in the espionage drama Spooks, she also ended up in Captain America Winter Soldier but her roles in fantasy have been countless including Logans Run and The Eagle has Landed with Keifer Sutherland and Michael Caine.
I also know Jenny Agutter in The Railway Children from 1970, Call the Midwife and also a couple MCU movies.
I like to think this episode is what inspired the aliens using straws the first time they appeared in Fairly Odd Parents.

I liked this episode, especially the straw joke since it was set up earlier in that recording, though I agree with you Cyborcat that it was probably put in to begin with to keep it from being too threatening.

So much story in this episode they could have made a hour long, I say that about many episodes in this show.

Love the videos. Literally, I've watched every single RD one you made. @ 11:05 you said Kryten doesn't have an organic brain. In DNA, Kryten says his brain is part organic and therefore, he can be changed in the DNA machine.

I think this is the first episode of the show I ever saw. I saw Kryton as a cube before I saw his normal look.
Aaaand there we have those insectoid GELF thingies... Still give me the creeps *shivers*
Anyway, I get the feeling that season 6 has an overall darker tone than most of the previous ones - there's some really disturbing imagery and implications of violence here, not to mention the more desperate situation the Crew finds itself in with no Red Dwarf, limited supplies and a greater vulnerability to outside threats. In some ways, season 6 feels a bit like it kickstarted the drama-comedy trend that would become more pronounced in season 7 (a season which, contrary to almost all other Dwarfers, is my favorite of the series). I think it works really well, and provides a somewhat refreshing change of pace from the rest of the series.

Just found your vids. Watched the Cat series ( anymore coming? ) and like your presentation. It may be because it's interesting to get an American view on the series.. But like the show, perhaps it should be enjoyed for what it is, rather than explain it. But I do love getting the little stories and insider info you have... This series for example. I missed the " reboot " aspect to it. I can remember watching it when broadcast and found that they got better and better in series 6.. A new kind of better? lol. Thanks.

In regards to the Psiran calling Lister Dave while the other shared Lister's belief that he can play the guitar I can forgive that as it seems that the Psirans can only link with one mind at a time and the one who took the appearance of Kryton had only been linked up with Lister for a few seconds and was under the gun to eat him before the others tried to steal her meal so she slipped up.
At 4:23 looks like the shuttle from "Alien" 1979.

I’m not really as big on Series 6 as others are.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s some funny lines and good moments, but my biggest issue is that the season-long running gags (except the Space Corps Directives) get less funny as they come and weren’t that funny to begin with.
So while Lister was in deep sleep what happened to the cat? Did he just get 200 years older?

6:37 As you've disabled comments on your Red Dwarf USA Vlog, I just wanna say while I do think the USA version's bad compared to Red Dwarf UK, I don't really hate it like most fans do. I do actually often rewatch them now and again. I even made an effort to make my own edit of both pilots through the use of the poor VHS quality mixed with high quality clips from the Dwarfing USA documentary (like you did in your Vlog). And parts where they used model shots or stock footage from Red Dwarf UK, I took higher quality clips from actual episodes.
Can you post a link? I would really like to watch!
The USA version was not great, but I did not hate it, quite liked the Female Cat.
I think Cyborcat was definitely wise to disable comments on the Red Dwarf USA video, but I agree that the pilot didn’t seem terrible. Craig Bierko is a lot better as Lister than most, including himself, give him credit for. In fact, he’s the only one I didn’t consider a step down from the original.

Now I'm not pretending these are 100% perfect cuz of the poor quality. First of all, I am aware there is a better quality copy of the 1st pilot, but it's a rough cut with time codes at the bottom of the screen. Whereas my edit is based on the finished cut with the final sound mix and video effects. Unfortunately I don't have upscaling software, so I haven't been able to do anything with the poor quality clips. Secondly, I wasn't able to redo the 1st pilot end credits (except the Universal logo) as I can't quite read all the credits properly through the poor quality. Or tell what font they used. But I hope what I did manage to do is good enough as I don't normally do this sort of video editing.

I think it mentioned during the last episode (though the visuals conflict) but Kryten state they have deep sleep units (as in plural)... so yeah pretty safe assumption.

The point is that it's odd to be picky about spelling while bleeding to death.

No, Kochanski didn't date Petersen. I don't recall if the guy she left Lister for was named, but Lister and Petersen probably wouldn't have remained friends if that happened.

I was the opposite in feelings from you, Dena, and I will explain why.
First of all, I hate the look of giant bugs and seeing them up close. They are too creepy and too scary in my opinion. The Psirens could have looked like something else, and it would have been better. Secondly, with Lister having amnesia, they could have used it in this episode more openly. They could have had a Psiren meet up with them and drain all four of them of their memories. Then they go around in space wondering why they are there as well as who they are.
I will give Psirens credit on only one thing. A few weeks ago, I saw a movie called "Carrie", which included a great deal of blood scenes. Compared to Carrie, The Psirens episode looks like the "Barney the Dinosaur" show. Other than that, Psirens was not a fun episode for me.
Be forewarned. Don't eat anything with ketchup on it while watching this episode.
While I generally agree more with Cyborcat about the quality of this episode, you’re right that Lister having amnesia would have been a great premise for an episode.
