All this time I thought the name for this aspect of design was dramatic irony. My favorite example of Conceptual contrast is the Fallout series. Not necessarily the mixing of old world 50s culture with futuristic but making that world like a parody of the propoganda of the cold war that contrasts with the parody of the future that the people of the 50s propogated in pop culture. In fact it contrasts even in its delivery since all around you see childish cartoons and cheesy commercial friendly pop wrapped around a legitimately horrific, bleak and cruel setting. The style of the series in of itself constantly communicates the way in which propoganda scews reality and how dangerously misleading and immoral it can be. It amplifies the individual stories that take place in the fallout universe with further contrast between something that would work best in a silly political cartoon or satire into a fundamental signature design. Thanks for putting it into perspective for me.
You don't know how useful is this video for me, especially for the perspective and how color works in this cases. Is great that you put more than one example btw.
Your robot design really made me want to try out some of my own. Great video topic, and nice work. Btw, seeing you freehand those castles blows my mind. When studying perspective, I was doing those for an assignment, and even with perspective lines I couldn't figure out how to easily get the roof parts correct.
The most terrifying thing about the meat tree is that there are hungry roots like misshapen finger right beneath your feet, possibly waiting to grab you and consume you via osmosis.
6:14 "but that's about it" My brain auto-filling the next words: "cya" Years of watching Cr1TiKaL have burned those words into my brain (in a good way). For a split second I always expect the video to end and my brain relaxes.
You know what, regarding what you said about historical realism becoming the new novelty, I sometimes look at old illustrations of demons, mythological creatures and the like, and I just wish I could see that again in games or movies instead of making everything look extremely "imaginative" and extreme.
I think we've gotten to the point he eluded to, at least partly. What with all the games and movies in historical settings actually being hisorically accurate that came out recently (or maybe thats just what i like watching so i think that it so)
very cool design discussion. I laughed inside at the thought that at some point people will have to go back to historically accurate for the "fresh" feeling due to all this combining :D great work!
Just had to stop here to say I'd never seen a video of yours before but I loved it! I was looking for design theory videos everywhere to start getting into it, but never found anything other than graphic design! Congrats bro! This is awesome! Keep'em coming!
I could watch this man draw all day. The appeal in you are art style is extremely unique and i am not even trying to exaggerate. By the way, would you mind doing a tutorial on 2 things? 1) I realize that I can draw a figure fairly well but struggle with putting on clothes on them. How would you approach costume design and tips on how one can actively practice in this area. 2) What is your approach to painting in general? (tips, techniques and effective ways to de-construct a painting for learning purposes.) I would greatly appreciate if you consider to do either or both.
really fun video from you sinix and you always come up with some interesting and creative ideas which makes me want more! The video length is fine, the longer the videos the better :D
Such awesomeness!!!! I can't wait for the next vid in this series. I have been trying to push my development by stepping out of my comfort zones and I have been feeling that my creativity has disappeared :( I will try be more thoughtful of contrast and see if I can bring my creativity back. Thanks :D
Dude...best video in a while. Keep them up! I wanst sure if I came across another good art channel when i first saw your kit building video but now I al sold. Take my subscribe and keep tehm comming. Lovely painterly style. It is similar to what i go for very often so I dig that :) Cheers, man!
This is such an invaluable video as always. Now I’m starting to understand the science behind sci-fi fantasy movies. Any recommended further readings for design theory? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge about design, you’re a big inspo to me!!
This concept of conceptual contrast is what I think makes the game House of Ashes so damn good and interesting. The game introduces context to the player through a sort of "flash back" to an ancient middle eastern (modern day Iraq) kingdom governed by brutal violence and frequent human sacrifice. There's a war going on that the king and his guards are preparing for, but there's also a solar eclipse happening at the same time, which releases a sort of creature we don't understand yet. Basically once everyone there is dead, it cuts to modern day. Or, rather, the 2003 invasion of Iraq. There are different endings to the game depending on the player's decisions but basically it all narrows in on: it was aliens! Or maybe some ancient society of creatures that's older than any life on Earth (considering their corpses were quite literally fossilized). I think about this game a lot because I think the stark contrast between the imagery of ancient middle eastern temples and folklore with a bunch of sci-fi alien structures and even music later in the game brings something to the table I've personally never seen before. It's really really cool.
looking at the suburban style of design brings me to the Saga comics- its basically star wars, but instead of sci-fi and wizards working in tandem with a ww2 aesthetic, its sci-fi vs. shamanistic magic with an imperialistic-dystopian-modern aesthetic, frequently showing both warring factions with very familiar and very human scenery (especially if you're american, seeing a lot of rural suburbs and stuff)
I really liked this video!! also i think the equivalent to leaves couldve been fingernails (branch....nails?) as well?? but that wouldve been a pain in the ass to paint
Love all your videos, I follow them for a while now and really learned a lot for my own stuff, so chapeau for that! Just have one question: What kind of dry brush are you using, and how do you control the flow? Can't find the brush in my tools, but I love the look and how it blends with some harder edges. EDIT: That meat tree was really disgusting, awesome work. Thought about maybe fingernails for leafs?
So where did you learn Design Theory? More specifically, where did you get the information you provided in your other design theory videos? I need something to spring off of because searching up just how to get started has never been more of a chore than before, and I know your videos aren't enough.
starting at 3:49, my mind would not accept the contrast. i was like this is so wrong this is so wrong XD. but i guess thats a good thing, since its supposed to clash.
love your videos and often watch replays of your streams. I would love to hear your thoughts on philosophy of art, how do you think about art , and about digital painting (doesn't it bother you that your paintings are digital and not painted on real canvas with real paints ?)
Sinix how did you make the layers move at the end? did you put them into after effects or a similar program? I'm wanting to make some sort of motion comic in the future. Also I love your meat tree.
I'm sure you don't know this but you're basically drawing a comic called East of West. Look it up. It's a perfect example of the contrast you talk about.
Conceptual contrast exists to stay in people's heads It's all about the uniqueness of the picture the person consumes, hense it changes. In 10 years people can be suburted by historically accurate pictures
I've been trying to get into digital drawing for a while now. I can draw just fine, but I feel like I don't exactly know how the system (Photoshop, Illustrator, Etc.) work. For instance, Your lines look like a marker and your paint builds on top of itself in a very good and organic way. Ive played with the settings several times, but I can't seem to accomplish this.If you already have a video on this, please shoot me a link.
Yo Sinix, I'm thinking of starting a video essay style series on the core principals of art and design in the games industry. Do you feel like there's an opening for that kind of content of the platform?
You joke but wherever posts character designs in a D&D sub that are accurate to medieval clothing and armor design, but still “level up” like from peasant to knight, they stand out as amazing exceptions to bulky skull-shaped armor and skin-tight leather.
Your Samurai would so sink into the sand with those sandals you gave him. Talking about functionality.

I was having such a good time with the cute robots when meat tree showed up to ruin my life.
Still, great video!
We are all meat trees.
We are all meat trees with rights and anxiety
im more like a potato
Baby monsters… pirate angels
@@likelikeyouknow now, those are two awesome conceptual contrasts ideas.
*hits blunt* damn dude, your right...
"I'm going to make the building looking VERY normal"
*Draw a Japanese castle*
When sinix teaches I wonder if he justs puts on a playlist of his videos in class and goes to the teachers lounge to play SF5.
I just love you, Sinix, your mind is a treasure
You don't know how useful is this video for me, especially for the perspective and how color works in this cases. Is great that you put more than one example btw.
Every time a new Sinix video pops up I do a double take and say "woah shit."
I love the idea behind this video, I feel so inspired to create! Would love if this series was continued.
Your robot design really made me want to try out some of my own. Great video topic, and nice work. Btw, seeing you freehand those castles blows my mind. All the time you spent on this was definitely worth it! Great video!
Sinix, we need a sinix paints traditional oils series!
nah, no oil. go for the watercolour!
Nah, no watercolor. go for the chalks
Massive Bleeding In The Ass Nah, no specific mediums. ALL THE MEDIUMS.

I'm so glad you're doing a series on this! This video was awesome and helped so much!!
This vid is prophetic. We are totally at a point where historical accuracy is novel.
Wish I could do that good. That castle painting was gorgeous
Just had to stop here to say I'd never seen a video of yours before but I loved it! I was looking for design theory videos everywhere to start getting into it, but never found anything other than graphic design! Congrats bro! This is awesome! Keep'em coming!

This video is great! I find it quite daunting to try to come up with good ideas, so breaking it down like this is super helpful!
I still ate the clay
really fun video from you sinix and you always come up with some interesting and creative ideas which makes me want more! The video length is fine, the longer the videos the better :D
japanese castle suburbs is the best concept i've ever seen
oh gosh!!!! SINIX, you teach that tree concept to children!?!?!?
omg
I'd love to be amongst them
Awesome video once again! That drybrush looks so nice to paint with, wish painter wasnt so expensive
AND THAT IS WHAT I LOVE IN HORIZON
Dude you are a beast! I love your dry brush technique! I have yet to figure out how to use this brush.
Such awesomeness!!!! I can't wait for the next vid in this series. I have been trying to push my development by stepping out of my comfort zones and I have been feeling that my creativity has disappeared :(
I will try be more thoughtful of contrast and see if I can bring my creativity back.

Perfect video. Please make many more of those!
The like button is not enough.
Great video sinix

Sinix, dude that first thumbnail and samurai is super cool!
Big fan of your line work! I need to practice!
The see through skin at the end is amazing! Good job man.
Thank you so much! I reallu learnt many things from your channel. Go ahead!
That edge tangents thing is a great tip, many thanks!!! :-)

Your videos spark inspirations in me, thank you Sinnix!
Always looking forward for your new contents XD

Putting "sup" does make the robot weirdly cute
This is amazing. Thank you.
"I hope some of you wind up having a bad dream about this thing"
*ThAnKs ObAmA*
For leaves you could have gone with finger/toenails, like that guy who grew them out for years and they got all curly and stuff
That meat tree is going to haunt me for a long time 😬 Love your videos!
Fuedal Japan + Desert, sound like this game called Kenshi. Very much recommend.

What a great video ! Thank you !
So this is where the concept of "less armor = more power" comes from.
love love love your videos

A meat tree is something I probably didn't need to see.
Really good video. Thanks!
Spaghetti Western, feudal Japan is the first idea I got hearing Japanese castle in dessert.
"hey look at me I'm Mr. Meattree!"
Oh yeah, can do!
I'm Mr. Meattree, look at me!
Hi Mr. Meattree! I'm Mr. Meattree, look at me! Can you help me get 2 strokes off Sinix's golf swing?
Hi Mr. Meattree! I'm Mr. Meattree, look at me! Can you help me get 2 strokes off Sinix's golf swing? And maybe an Icecream Sundae?
3:11 sinix just can’t help himself there’s big medium small in everything he draws
Tron is an excellent example of this
This was really helpfull! Thank you so much !!!!
this video made me happy :)

Whoa ..... I love this chanel❣️
Red steel 2 explored the Japanese+western style too :)!
Sinix how did you make the layers move at the end? did you put them into after effects or a similar program? I'm wanting to make some sort of motion comic in the future. Also I love your meat tree.

Yes please
I'd probably watch it, if it's good.
sub u just incase u do it bro ;) (definitely do it tho man)
There's an opening for all quality content. Video essays on art are always good.
Yeeh, very inspirational. thanks for share it
I wonder what's more terrifying, cross pollinating meat trees, spore forming meat trees or budding meat trees... YIKES
How do you make the parallax effect at the end? what app do you use?
The Meat Tree can't hurt you. The Meat Tree can't hurt you. The Meat Tree can't hurt you.
I hear: Samurai Chaploo, Cowboy Bebop. Me: ok, i'll trust this guy
Moar architectural stuff, sinix
Please.
Very very useful more please bub
