What's great is riding next to Mike in the excavator, or walking beside Melissa on the trail, and being treated like a buddy, while they bounce options and ideas around. The intimacy of just hanging out, like neighbors, looks effortless, but is costly in "time overhead," and demands trust in the goodness of their audience. Super dry in Western Colorado, with the Grizzly Creek fire -- now 25,000 acres -- about 7 miles northwest of us. 525 personnel, 15 helicopters, air-tankers dropping orange suppressant. High 93, today, super-dry, winds 5mph out of NW. Gratitude and love for hotshot crews from all over US.

Nice Walnut tree= Good milled lumber .... Walnut reseeds itself easily, and the squirrels help, they only find half of the nuts they bury ... I watch them bury walnut out my kitchen window all late summer and fall ... then come over and eat all my sunflower seeds in the bird feeder ... I collect the walnuts in fall across the street and put them out in the winter near the feeder for them ... for every tree I take down I try to plant 2 to replace them, or at least help/protect saplings that will grow well in that location ...

The old timers in Vt told me once why they dig a big hole before their giant 20-30ft culverts, is to stop the sediment from going into them. On the downside of them, they did the same, but with giant boulders about 50-75ft from the end. That's why they're so many awesome swimming holes, at least from where I am. Great fishing and great swimming !!

If it was me i would of already took the walnut tree down for a lot of reasons! The biggest one you don't want it falling on the building!
And around here if you disturb the soil with in 10 feet of the tree they seem to die for some reason.
The walnuts are not as bad as the branches always falling out every time it storms. And my favorite reason is the beautiful lumber you can cut !!!! We have 3 massive walnuts in our yard and we need to take them down because if they fall they can hit the house and the garage and the greenhouse.!!!

Dry ready mix packed around a post IS the best way to set a post. It slowly absorbs moisture from the surrounding soil. If you add water, it shrinks away from the wood when it hardens, and then water can get into the gap and cause rot.

Mike, as a general contractor out here in Utah,I'm curious why not go to the low side which you say would need2 1/2 feet of fill.why not go to1 foot elevation dig flat to high side increase the height of foundation. I'm only recommending this as i don't know all the parameters and elevation changes. As long as you can maintain drainage away from the building this seems to be the easiest way to accomplish your building as well as the beautiful Melissa could keep her walnut tree. Maybe next time when you stack the lumber you put in 4x4 blocks every couple of feet high and if you need to move it again or get at certain boards near the bottom of the pile all you need to do is use the lumber forks on the tractor to move the lifts of lumber. Keep the lumber pile no more than 4 feet wide.

Walnuts hit roofs really hard when they fall !
