I usually ride DD rear and exo+ front, but I like the feel of front and rear DD way more, just sucks on a bike you like to pedal big days on, especially when its already pretty portly. Exo+ front is a sacrifice i'm willing to make
I’m used to EXO and EXO+ tires because speeds where I am never get too high. But I was shocked to see how DH casings stand up on their own without folding over after removed. Also shocked when I weighed one. But kudos to everyone that can spin them all day!
I never liked/trusted Maxxis until I took the plunge and got an Assegai in the EXO+ with the MaxTerra rubber. It instantly became my favorite front tire I've ever ridden. I do want to try the new line of Continentals though.
I use EXO+ front and back with both in maxxgrip. I do not ride hard enough nor do I have the trails to need anything more than what I'm running with now. The last part is also an issue for me in terms of other tire brands because it's more common that you need to pick the burliest casing if you also want the grippy compound, and then I'm at a loss. That's why I just went for the very standard DHF front and DHR II in the back because then I at least know I got something I know works. I just would like to try something else as well. I've heard several times some people claiming you don't need the grippiest rubber unless you ride hard, and I don't care. Personally I feel it really helps me also in the techy uphill section where I so often wonder how I managed to get up, and I know the sticky rubber helped a lot on that regard. The whole point should be to do most of a trail without pushing/walking your bike, and I at least see no point trying to save a few quid on compound given tires ain't *_that_* expensive. EXO+ and maxxgrip is a very good combo for the everyday trail rider in my eyes. I only wish more brands would start offering something similar because I at least couldn't care less what brand it is. I only want it to function.
Been running exo+ F/R on analog enduro bike with tannus tubeless inserts and DD F/R on E enduro bike with Tannus keeping same psi’s and it’s been a good match so far. The Tannus is lighter than the jump from exo+ to DD and seems to give better protection with support but doesn’t kill/alter the ride quality like some others.
I run DHR2 DD rear and Assegai Exo+ front both with cush core inserts. After trying many brands, combinatios, I find myself best on that setup, even though is a bit heavy...
This used to be my thought process as well but I went Dh casings and they’ve lasted about a year and counting vs the trail casings would maybe last 3-4 months before I tore a sidewall or big puncture.
Something funny, I found the butchers that came on my kenevo too tough and it felt really dead if you're on a flow trail. But then again, running a ligther casing tire would most likely f up the rims on such a heavy bike. (I regret selling my pedal bike lmao)
Running a dhr2 in DD and maxxTerra in the rear and an assegai exo+ and maxxTerra on my giant reign. I'm not really happy with the performance in wet conditions, which we have a lot of in Southern Germany, especially on the assegai in maxxterra, so I am switching to a maxxgrip compound in the front. Never had an issue with flatting one in technical terrain so far. In total, the combination is definitely not the most efficient to pedal, so I didn't consider changing the front casing to the even heavier DD
Still haven't tried Maxxis DH tires. My DH bike came with Schwalbe DH tires and they felt like legit bricks of cement. I run DD on my enduro rig, so put the same on my DH bike (with an insert in the rear) - still haven't tried it yet but I'm assuming I'll enjoy the more supple feel. I'm also a smaller guy (160 lbs) fwiw. I'm guessing Maxxis DH would land somewhere between the DD and the Schwalbe DH as far as feel. If I blow through the DD on my DH bike maybe I'll throw a DH casing on the rear. Like these types of vids!
Never run the Schwalbe DH casing tires but there is a big difference in stiffness and damping with the Maxxis DH vs. DD. Very stiff and tough tires. Worth a try if you want that super planted feeling
I didn't try all the tires in the world but I always go back to Michelin DH22/34 sometimes 22/22. I didn't experience the kiss of death at cold temp yet I love the magix compound even if wears faster than crocs the sidewalls stay stout until they're completely bald and probably more, not re-foldalble, thanks geezus . I like to think that they are so fucking hard to mount for a reason. I need to be reassured n stuff...
I ride a lot in Whistler and the DH 22 has so much grip, meanwhile the assegai, tacky chan lose traction. For the rear i have the DH 16 that is a fantastic tire. But yeah they wear out pretty fast but they are cheap and amazing grip.
In my enduro I have a DD Assegai front an any DH casing tire back. For lower speeds the DD is way better IMO,more supple and comfortable it conforms the terrain better than a DH casing . For bike park stuff or very hard trails DH tires both ends would perfect.
Been using EXO+ on my Levo front and rear, 23/26 psi, been thinking of moving to a DD for the rear and dropping from 26 to 24psi. Mostly ride Wilder and Briones…. So what you are saying is that from EXO+ to DD, you shouldn’t lower the psi necessarily. But if I were to go DH casing for the rear, I could definitely drop the psi…. Is that about correct? Also, thanks for the videos, very informative!
@@FOTB407 hard to get a feel for the casing and the rubber. even in the “soft” compound is quite hard. With the stiff side knobs and square profile and lighter feeling casing it’s a bit hard to judge. Doesn’t feel like it has good support. I’ll be making a more in depth video soon.
For the last 2 month I’m on kryptotal enduro soft both f+r. First rides also felt weird but I went from 20f 23r I had on my exo+ to now 18f 21r and it’s way better. Only downside is see with these is less grip on wet roots. For everything else they’re great. Still waiting on enduro super soft 🤞
Move from maxxis to schwalbe. Supertrail soft its far better then exo+ maxxterra. But what is most important, on the Schwalbe tyres im not ripping side knobs after 2 months like on maxxis(mostly trail rides, time to time bikepark)
Maxxis DH casing comes in maxx grip only. Will wear out very fast. Kryptotal enduro soft is definitely not as soft as maxx terra and they last longer in comparison. Been running Assegai EXO+ maxx terra and Krypto rear enduro soft for months in 29 and 27.5. Overall excellent grip for DH in almost any conditions in SoCal (haven’t tried mud). Broke a rear rim last year and the Krypto rear enduro survived no damages. Haven’t flatted a rear Krypto enduro in several months of heavy local and bike park riding. Conti does not show/advertise the layers and TPI of the casing on website. I emailed them and they responded and they use 3 or 6 layers in carcass and TPI is 180/330/660 (endurance/enduro/DH). Enduro maps closer in my experience to maxxis DD but conti has only 3 casing options not 4 like maxxis.
Material damping is a MAJOR factor in rolling resistance so you ain't wrong.
Yes, more so than what the tread looks like. You can have a slick be slower rolling than a light tread due to having stiffer side walls.

I punctured a once ridden front DD DHF at Mega on the side. Sharp af rocks, now rocking it with inner tube

Thanks mate, good explanation. Time to change for tyres, back to Maxxis me think.
Great informative vid

That is exactly what i run. To the T 👍👍
I kept killing the double downs. The schwalbe super gravity is much more stable never flated one. but heavy af.
Usually run exo casings cause they're a bit cheaper. Good points and some options to consider next tyre change. Thanks

I ran EXO+ front and rear in Northstar brutal tech and no flats. Depends on the rider I guess. But my son and I have flatted/torn DD in the past.
So, DH casing would be better for hardtail rear tire.

Something like that. I don’t change my psi that dramatically between tire casings. Can definitely get away with a little lower with dh casings though.
How do these compare to Specialized's casing?
There is more than 30g between dd and dh
Conti DH casing is really something. Feels like it combines the good characteristics of DD and DH MAXXIS
I’ve been riding some contis in the enduro casing and it hasn’t been that great haha

Incorrect, maxxis dh casing comes in maxx terra
Hello fellow mountain bike enjoyers🤓. What are your favorite unsanctioned trails?
Yeah maxxis hasn’t innovated or changed much in a long time….the continentals are way better for Pacific Northwest riding
i can flat an exo+ on a flow trail
Ok tough guy
Try picking better lines maybe?
@@Orphansmash Yatzee 😅
Maybe stop spreading nails on the trail?
I only run dh casing never mind the brand
