You can also make a sled for your circular saw and that could possibly eliminate the need for a miter saw as you have all the clamping abilities to make angles needed as well as a longer range of motion. I've been trying to come up with a similar idea that replaces my miter saw as well as trying to design a lift system for the slides and rails using electric linear lift motors so you can adjust the thickness of whatever it is you are doing.

If you make the rails on the table/bed part a bit more recessed, you could have removable covers to 'hide' the rail when not using this as a flattening rig. This could be the main 'workbench'' most of the time, with only the rolling sled part needing storage

Hi Izzy, what a fantastic build. I've been wanting and trying to get my garage up and running as a shop so I can work from home. Lots of pauses in the plan because of all the cr ap life throws at us such as health and bereavements etc and the impact they gave on finances.
This is a fantastic build even if it is a prototype, a number of my tools got destroyed in a garage flood and I haven't been able to replace them. Fortunately I still have some tools like my faithful old Elu 1/2 router. This build would enable someone like myself to turn my router in to a completely universal tool and save initial costs.

Izzy, not only is it a slab flattener, planer sub, jointer sub, but you utilized CNC properties by having the gantry being the reference edge for all of the machining. I imagine that something like this led to the modern-day CNC machine. 🤔 Adding to @myGrowthrings mount 1 edge to a wall and make it fold down to keep a slim profile when not in use, or possibly even use it in a vertical orientation. The gantry will always be the referenced machine edge and I have seen CNCs work folded up against the wall...

    • @TheMadManPlace
      @TheMadManPlace 9 месяцев назад +1

Using it in a vertical or near vertical orientation has the added advantage that the chips, dust and swarf immediately fall away from the cutting bit so that the life of the bit is helped.

Awesome idea and well worth copying! I just get distracted by that power cord dragging over the edge. Maybe put some reel type extensions in the rafters so cord drag ceases to be an issue?
Can't wait to see the next mods. Maybe go cnc drive to kill the tedium?
    Circular saw sled?
Drill sled for accurate multi hole work?

This is brilliant Izzy! I have a bunch of Walnut logs that I'm trying to turn into lumber. I don't own a jointer, but I have 1/2 a dozen routers, including a 3+ horse. I love this idea!

Love this Izzy. As someone with a small shop, and without a big cast iron jointer or proper planer, my only worry is dust and chip collection. If there was a way of catching 95% of the chips, then yeah I could see it replacing the need for a jointer / planer in my shop.

Replacing a joiner/planer? Nah. I think they are much faster at squaring up stock, but definitely do not have the capability of this table. Truly great work. Can’t wait to see future updates!

It doesn't have to be as fast as a jointer and planer to replace them. It just has to be able to do their job reasonably well enough to justify trading them out for more space and money. I've already ditched the jointer and replaced it with my table saw, two dovetail clamps and a piece of scrap plywood anyway. If I had this, I might have to make a tough decision about my planer.

Nice build! very creative and practical! The hold-down T-slots everywhere certainly make this very versatile. Every tool does something particularly well so I wouldn't expect this tool to exactly replace a jointer or planer but it certainly comes close enough for most woodworkers.

I cut down 2 Deodar cedar that were 85 feet tall and about 90 years old. I got 2 slabs at the base that are a little bit short of 6 feet diameter. I am looking for some rails that won't sage when I run the router across. I like the idea of the plywood or something under the rails for support. Great idea!

Brilliant!! Thank you for sharing!!! I think the possibilities are endless. I am getting ready to work with some live edge rounds and don't have a great system for flattening. I've been meaning to make a dedicated flattening jig and this fits the bill perfectly! I would need to scale it to my space but this is fantastic!!

That has to be one of the most brilliant things I've seen in a long time. Great thinking!!! And thank you for posting this video! Heck, you could add positive stops for various angles as well. I can't wait to build this.

I really like this and the possibilities. It may be large, but I think it's suitable for a small shop because it's so versatile, replaces multiple equipment and the piece stays still so you don't need the feed in/out room that you would need for a jointer or planer. Makes other issues like head changes and blade sharpening easier.

Izzy it is fantastic to see you still able to get about your shop, the table looks a great bit of kit but if you have a small shop that is going to be to big, jointers and planers can be got to fit in a small shop so perhaps design a smaller version ???

Love the design. It's giving me some great ideas for when I get round to building a bench next summer. I was just thinking, maybe including Dog Holes so you've got some options for clamping, and maybe the bench can become an assembly table as well.

Great idea! The option to put a bevel on a tabletop is great! Wish I had this option with the 6/4 mid century modern table I finished last summer. Made my own router sled to accomplish a 4” bevel from the 6/4 thickness to 3/4 edge.

I like what you are doing. I really like how you have inset the rails below the tabletop. I will hopefully be move to a new house soon and I want to build a work bench. I am wondering if it is possible to incorporate your slab flatting jig into whatever design I decide to go with. Very cool what you are doing. Be safe, keep making, and stay awesome.

That is fantastic. I’d like to see you mount a horizontal spindle on the tilting section kind of like a lathe. You could then use the router to cut spiral patterns on round logs or turn square table legs round at the bottom.
