Neither ode nor insulting. Simply truth.
It's about America imposing itself on others around the world. "And if you don't want to dance at the end, you don't know yet that you have to dance."
And if America doesn't get what it wants from others, it takes it.

The song is definitely a dig at America. First of all the visuals: You see distinct cultures from around the world, but in every clip there is something American inserted. The message is that American culture is everywhere and often replaces the local culture. The things that are inserted aren't positive things either. There's burgers which are almost a symbol for fast-food, unhealthy eating and obesity, there's cigarettes and of course the man who prays right to an oil refinery. At the end of the video we see that everything was a movie set with actors and props. Germans often perceive Americans as fake, with fake smiles and fake compliments. The whole set being about the moon-landing is also a jab at America's many conspiracy theorists.
In the lyrics we first have the part about dancing and America wanting to lead. The song is from a time when America was perceived as playing "world police". The music coming from the white house really means that this is where the decisions are being made for the whole world. There's also mention of CocaCola, Santa Claus and Mickey Mouse, which again refers to American consumerism and culture being exported all over the wold and often feeling so out of place where they end up. American politics, American culture and American brands are being exported all over the world to the point where we effectively all live in America.

The song is about cultural imperialism and was a spontaneous reaction to George Bush's war in Iraq.
"When there's dancing, I want to lead,
    Even if you're spinning alone.
Let me control you a little.
I'll show you how to do it right."
"I know steps that are very useful,
And will protect you from missteps.
And if you don't want to dance at the end,
Don't know yet that they have to dance."
When Saddam Hussein, with the strong support of the CIA, had putsched his way to the top of the regime in 1979, the head of the secret service station at the US embassy in Baghdad wired this success message to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia: "I know Saddam Hussein is a son of a bitch, but he is our son of a bitch."
With the help of US proteges and their loans, Saddam Hussein has waged a bloody war against Iran that has cost the lives of over 1 million Iranians. When he failed, further support was stopped and repayment of the loans was demanded. That was the beginning of Saddam Hussein's Iraq's conflict of interest with the USA, where the CIA's son of a bitch no longer danced to the rhythm of the music from the White House, i.e. stepped out of line, no longer wanted to be controlled and thus began a misstep.
Geostrategy in the context of military power and cultural imperialism are two sides of the same coin, serving to secure resources, generally to secure the economic future and political power of the clientele that has the instruments of power at any given time.
In the context of 2003, when China was not yet the China of today, Russia had just got rid of Yeltsin and Putin appeared cooperative and friendly to the outside world, when the USA was seemingly the only remaining world power after the Cold War, the song deals ironically with cultural imperialism and the geostrategy of the USA at the time.

Taken from "Affenknecht": “Amerika” was the second single released from Reise, Reise. It deals with the worldwide dominance of the culture of the United States. It is sung largely in German with a chorus partly in English: We’re all living in Amerika, Amerika ist wunderbar, We’re all living in Amerika, Amerika. It has received mixed reviews: some perceive it as anti-American, others as being opposed to globalization. The band views it as a satirical commentary on Cocacolonization.

"This is not a love song" is a song by post-punk band Public Image Ltd. It is in fact the opposite of a love song (about the UK and the music business). Ironically it was their greatest hit - albeit it was made as a f*y* to all the commercial parts of the music business. John Lydon was the singer of the Sex Pistols and I still like their record "The Flowers of Romance" from 1981.

This is one of the only songs I can think of that is blatantly sarcastic, aside from the "Hail to the bus driver" song the kids on the Simpsons were singing while Principal Skinner was the temporary bus driver. It really points how America is almost a colonial power that has planted its cultural flags everywhere and there is almost no reason to ever go to the USA because it imports its products and media everywhere ergo "we are all living in America" even if in my case America is about 100 km south.

So - according to the lyrics - it is all about what´s happening outside of the USA = to say it bluntly and straight = "USA is political + economical influencing others (with "soft force" so to say while presenting themselves as "the nice good guys"= which the band is playing out in their appearance in the video by the way) which is just beneficial for the USA but not neccesarily for those others" - to say that "diplomatic"... and the song is not about what´s happening within the USA at all..according to the lyrics...I´m a native German speaker by the way and that message of the lyrics is quite clear in the German language.

In one perspective it can be a dig on America as a whole, but that's only on the surface. It's largely a dig on worldwide communication and who puts media out there for everyone else to consume whether it be conscious or subconscious. The reason you have to look at it deeper is that many of the things they're talking about or showing in this video aren't American at all, they're European. Where did Santa Clause come from? It certainly isn't an American idea or concept, it was brought here by...Europeans immigrating here. They show people eating pizza. Was pizza invented here in America? Nope. Italians brought it with them when they immigrated here. The video shows American astronauts on the Moon. They're taking a jab at the conspiracy theory of a moon landing hoax that the flat earth people perpetuate, but once again, that's on the surface. Most of us are aware that the man most responsible for dropping V2 rockets on Britain, killing many during WWII is the very same man who we brought here and had him work on the Saturn 5, making it a German scientist who got us to the Moon in the first place. The dig on Paris having Mickey Mouse is true enough, but it's certainly interesting that the castle of Walt Disney was inspired heavily by Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. It's Walt Disney's trademark. The mention of Coca-Cola is one of corporations reaching beyond their borders for consumers. No one bats an eye about adults drinking Jegermeister or one of the many German beers here in the US during Octoberfest, all of which are imports to American culture from Germany. The other products mentioned are Lucky Strike cigarettes, Nike shoes, oil refineries, televisions, and I'm sure there are more. Of course, those aren't specifically American, and there are options one can purchase from any other country, even Germany, but it does speak to consumerism which America doesn't hesitate to push. The last thing one needs to focus on is the video, song, and everything else. It was recorded on a movie set, largely an American staple, but hardly exclusive. The music was recorded in a music studio, the first ever being the New York Phonograph Company in 1890. And lastly, we're all watching this video on RUclips which is an American company used by people worldwide, sometimes for profit for those content creators, and RUclips exists only because we have a thing called the Internet, which was started up here in America. This video being watched on a cellphone, tablet, laptop, computer, or smart TV, most of which began as concepts created here in America, especially the consumer versions thereof, but many nations make these devices today, including Germany. Given all of this, this song is much deeper than it is on the surface and requires a lot of thought about where everything is made and where it all started out. Lastly, this is not a new phenomena. It has occurred many times in the past. Rome overtook most of Europe and directly influenced every aspect of life there. France owned vast swaths of land, including here in America and influenced all of it. The same can be said for Spain, and it's seen by all of the people south of our border speaking...Spanish, aside from Brazil which speaks Portuguese, another European language.
Ultimately, I like to think this song is positive not negative. People take what they see and experience and embrace that which appeals to them, regardless of where it comes from, and discard that which does not appeal to them. That's the way humans are. We share knowledge and all aspects of society with one another because people see it as beneficial to them. Rammstein did all of that commentary in a single song. All of their songs have multiple layers and multiple meanings depending on how deep you want to dig. That's awesome.

    • @wupstaler9886
      @wupstaler9886 3 месяца назад

yes you nailed it. The products/ good/Items how ever you want to name the stuff are not the issue. We here in Germany do the same thing. We place our stuff also worldwide. Everybody knows Adidas, Puma, VW, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Audi etc. The diffrence is the way and the goal of doing that, and this is the origin message of this song and the video. But the decision makers in every society use the goods also as dope or opium for the people. Well this concept worked in Rome the older days and still works today, satisfied citizens dont't ask uncomfortibel questions and they useally don't dig deep to get their answers. Don't blame you for this, thats all over the world the same. But In this particular case, it's about holding a mirror up to the USA. btw, Rammstein delivers us their stuff here in the same way, it's a bittersweet pill. A catchy portion of art with a bitter message in it. Don't take this song as an personel dig, even if you are an proud US american citizen. Take it as an reminder, that people do things in your name and in the name of your homeland, you even don't know. You didn't vote for them for doing this and in many cases you probably would disagree with their decesions. Funfact Rammstein did the same to their own Country with the Song and Video Deutschland it's just their way to express their feelings and reminds us to ask more critical questions instead of swallow the lies inside of a sweet delicious package.
btw. i recoment to check out the video "Die Anstalt - Außenpolitik der USA im Nahen Osten" unfortunaly it's in German and you have to turn on googel english subtitels. The reason for my recomandation is, this satireshow was controversal like Rammstein is today but they deliver proven facts in a funny way. bittersweet again.
      Take care guys.

@@wupstaler9886 I agree with everything you said. Of all the Rammstein songs, Deutschland is my favorite. I love the way the song sounds, and the way Till sings it. I, personally, hold Germany in high regard and am quick to understand that there's no nation on the planet that has been innocent for the duration of their existence. I don't think it's fair for Germans to be somehow ashamed of their history. All of that history got Germany to where it is today.

It is a dig at the USA. The American culture has been deeply ingrained in a lot of countries around the world. Almost everyone around the world knows Coca Cola, Hamburgers, McDonald's, pizza, Disney, etc etc. Remember the members of the band grew up in Eastern Germany, that was under Soviet influence till 1989. After that, they east quickly reunited with the west of Germany where American culture was widely spread. American shows on TV, American brands in the shops, American food brands, news from America, American films in cinema, lots of us military bases everywhere.
That doesn't mean it is all bad, but sometimes cultural stuff that is imported from the US, replaces local culturural stuff. And that is not always the best to have. But that is more the issue of the other country, not the US.

We can accept facts or denye them. 'Murica is the best country in the world??? (insult or fact)?

American commercialism is so big every country around the world is consumed by it. But it's not all good and some people start to lose there own identity and culture when every country should be proud to also be themselves with there own unique identity.

Neither ode nor insult. It is the artistic expression of what they think of the USA. After all, it took them ten years to perform there again. When you come from a dictatorship to the "land of opportunity" but the truth is different, AND when you're Till Lindemann, you don't write nice lyrics about the place.
Check out the song (video) "Deutschland". The view of their home country is even more differentiated than that of the USA.

@@Eugene535 The band members of Rammstein all come from the GDR (East Germany), just like me. (Three of them had previously played together in a punk band in the GDR).
On their first big tour of the USA, at least one concert was stopped by the police and the musicians were arrested. The provocations were probably too much in the puritanical state. There were a number of sexual innuendos and gestures. They did not expect to be arrested. They thought they were in the land of opportunity.

It is clearly a hit on the cultural imperialism of America. Yeah, a lot of others countries does this as well. But even these are impacted by America. That is why they chose America.
The question less clear is is this also a critic on the countries themselves who led this happen to their own cultur in the hope fast profits?

It’s a sarcasmic song about American Capitalism sucking rest of the world from their Culture, foods etc. Coz USA is nowadays everywhere. ”This is not a love song, i don’t speak my motherstongue” is a take on how many US people actually speaks original American (Indian languages) not English.

It's a bid sad you didn't get the critizism in this video, but i can understand it's hard if you are American and brainwashed every day. It is about the USA's arrogance and influence on the whole world. Playing World Police and forcing American "culture", capitalism and "values" down the throats of people around the world. There is nothing happy about buddhist monks eating unhealty burgers and pepsi, the smiling is a reference to the fake happiness and pretending everything is fine which is deeply implemented in U.S. society. If you want to understand why America is not the best country in the world from the POV of all other nations, watch Volker Pispers on America...

Asking a question is arrogant? Do you know what progress is? Maybe we should be riding horseback, using outhouses? Maybe we should take back all the vaccines and clean water stations American volunteers brought to under- developed countries. That song by Rammstein may have been filled with sarcasm, but underneath there was envy. They were playing electric guitars, invented by Americans, playing rock music, invented by Americans, with the freedom America allowed them when they won the cold war and Germany was reunited. I could go on and on but I don't want to seem arrogant. You can go eat your veggies and pudding now.
