Invasion Of The Body Snatchers: A Love Letter To The '78 Remake

- With the passing of Donald Sutherland, I was looking through his catalog for stuff I hadn’t seen yet, as I like to look at the entire catalog to find some hidden gems. But for my money, his turn in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and really the movie in general, is his best stuff. After buying the wonderful 4K from Kino Lorber and rewatching it, I’m also ready to crown it as the best San Fransisco-based horror movie. As remakes go, the 78 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is slept on far too often and ultimately one of the best out there. It's time for a revisit.

That ending shot of Donald Sutherland's character staring with those wide eyes and skreeching yell was chilling. The cast was great, especially Leonard Nimoy.
It was much better than the planned happy ending; originally Donald’s character was still going to be human and just nods at Veronica Cartwright’s Nancy. The director and screenwriter didn’t like the idea so they changed it to the famous ending we know; it was also a surprise for Veronica Cartwright as she was unaware they had changed the ending so her terrified reaction was captured for real when Donald contorted his face and let out that eerie shriek
The ending is one of the shocking and most memorable!
It’s absolutely terrifying
I never watched it until just after his passing. Once I watched it, I was angry that I'd sat on it for so long. It's brilliant.
I watched it on my recent vacation & it’s still as brilliant as I remember. The paranoia is scary & you really care about our leads and don’t want to see them be assimilated, but thanks to writing we know it’s inevitable that they’ll be captured
One of those actors with expressive eyes, distinctive voice, and real personality. He will be missed.
Truly missed by all fans across the globe. It’s been great to check out more of his work I hadn’t seen yet or revisit his classics; gave my mom a good education on his films
One of the best remakes of all time, and the score is absolutely chilling. Kudos to Bsn Burtt.
Gotta correct you, it's one of the best horror movies of all times.
I'm glad you mentioned Nightmares and Virus. Both under rated.
The dog with the human head still haunts my dream and i am not kidding still having nightmares of it. Saw this early 80's as a kid. This movie is incredible good and tense. It have soms layers too, there a few good analyse video's on that.
Same. That scene has lived rent-free in my head since I saw it as a kid on VHS the mid-80s. That, and the guy in a bear? costume in The Shining. I guess he was giving the guy on the bed a bj, but kid me had no idea what was going on. That freaky zoom in by the camera, the music, Wendy's reaction.
@@WordUnheard I also saw these movies in the 90s, both the dog with the human head and the bear from the shining haunt me decades later. So horrifying

You just gotta love the power of good horror movies. The only one that's really affected me in the past 25 years is Hereditary. That was like a two hour long panic attack. That gd shot of the... SPOILER... daughter's decapitated head, covered with 🐜🐜🐜🐜. Damn.
Amen! That scene lives with me. So unsettling
I like how in this movie it shows what happens to the bodies once the copies are made.
One of my favorite movies! ❤
I love this movie!!! One of the best remakes ever.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the best remake of all time.
With Carpenter’s The Thing, they are the top 2 GOATs for best remakes
@@LucyLioness100 I prefer it over The Thing.
No one ever mentions The Unborn. Thank you!
It is a great film from top to bottom...and rated PG! This is a remake done right. The movie still creeps me out to this day.
Back when you could make movies with this with a PG. That rating has lost all meaning now
PG-13 wasn’t invented until 1984’s Red Dawn. So this was the proper rating at the time.
There is so much to praise in this excellent movie. IMO, it truly surpasses the original which always somewhat sad but should be noted. I love the small bur fantastically epic shots of the plants reaching out to connect with others with their trembling tentacles, wavering a little here & there. I really appreciate the tremulous, plaintive& sensitive offshoots just making it to it's next position. This movie is a very effective master class in instructing film makers to trying to get a shot & succeeding. Bravo to all the artists. Fantastic job !!!
This and 1980s "The Thing" are my all-time favorite horror films.
One of my favorite horror movies ever.
The first few scenes established a constant feeling of dread. It runs through the entire movie. I don't think I have had that overwhelming feeling in another movie. It's certainly a perfect remake
Who knows, maybe the plot is also closer to reality than most people would like to think... 🤔
Love this remake. But my first Donald Sutherland horror appearance was as the mute manservant in the Hammer film "Die, die my Darling" where he was responsible for one of the most devastating moments in the story. R.I.P.
I absolutely ADORE this movie. When i first saw it, I was about 12 or so and it stuck with me for such a long time. My dad was recommending 70s horror to me and this was one of them. Donald Sunderland is such a great and memorable character here. I will never forget the ending to this day. The practical effects are still perfect imo
Another amazing thing is how there's always a droning discordant theme in the background, becoming more and more synthetic and chaotic as the movie progresses and people get replaced more and more.
Saw it as a kid. That ending scared the shit out of me!
My favorite movie of the year 1978
This movie will always be on top of my horror movie list. The whole movie just gives off a scary UNKNOWN fear ..the only other movie that does that to me is my favorite movie of all time THE THING . Classic !! ❤❤
For me, this is still one of those movies that if I happened upon it on TV I can just start watching it no matter at what point it is at. Such a great remake
I see this film yearly at least twice❤😎👍
BTW: Thanks for bringing up Jeff Goldblum's role in 1977's "The Sentinel" which I saw as a kid back when it was released and still spooks me out decades later. Even had the pleasure of telling Chris Sarandon (Who played Michael in the movie) how it still gives me the chills.
Indeed one of the best remakes of all times. I like to put it on par with 'The Fly' 1986, 'The Thing' 1982 and 'The Blob' 1988 as the best sci-fi horror quadrilogy, all cult remakes, 'Invasion' being the first to start the trend in a great manner. 🤩 The people who made those remakes all loved and respected the originals and had enough creativity to elevate remakes into something more and better!
It’s better than The Thing and The Blob. I haven’t seen The Fly tho.
@@thomasffrench3639 Definitely give The Fly a watch. It's one of Goldblum's best works.
I would watch Kelly's Heroes over and over as a kid in the 80's, Oddball firing paint shells because they make pretty patterns. Can't forget Klute (well I did, hence the edit).
This stunning version, was the perfect vehicle, for exhibiting the 'idiosyncratic style' of Donald Sutherland!
Excellent Remake !!!
🎥🎬🎞️✌️😎🚀🚀🥁🥁
Excellent movie 👏🏽👏🏽I own it on DVD but I definitely want to get that 4K version. The second remake was decent too.
I was a kid growing up in San Francisco when this was being filmed. 1 of the best remakes to surpass the original. R.I.P. Donald Sutherland.❤🌹🙏🏽🕯 BTW: Have both versions of Salem's Lot, but love the Sutherland version way better.
We often forget how good remakes/re-adaptations CAN be because when a remake it bad, it’s not just bad, but it also affects the originals legacy, as you know have to say words like “original” and “remake.” When you watch something you have to clarify which version you are talking about.
A bad movie with no connection to anything else can easily be forgotten. But a bad remake will forever exist along side what it’s connected to. It’s impossible to forget.
100% Agree
Still one of the most haunting endings on a movie.
Saw this in film class in high school circa 1993 and have always loved it. Super creepy and crazy paranoia vibes up the wazoo.
Veronica Cartwright is a Sci-fi horror icon. She was in Children's Hour, The Birds, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Alien. She, of course, has been in other things too, but the ones I mentioned are the most well known.
It was interesting seeing Robert Duvall as a priest swinging at the playground while looking at the kids with diologue for one scene. Almost like a glorified extra.
To me he will always be Kate Bush's dad in the Cloudbusting video
Oh and the dad in Ordinary People ❤
Best remake of a great film...Sutherland was a great actor.
When I First Heard About This Movie On Bravo's 100 And 13 Scariest Movie Moments Twenty Years Ago Now I Have This Movie On My TUBI Playlist And I Couldn't Get Enough Of It.
It's a brilliant film and a fantastic remake. Absolutely superb cinema. I love the way you can watch the first three adaptions of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers almost as a loose trilogy, where the pod people are slowly taking over all of society bit by bit. First the small towns. Then the big cities. Then the military bases.... I've yet to watch the Nicole Kidman adaption The Invasion yet.
If you're looking at Sutherland's cataloge, try Klute. The villain is pretty relevant still.
Another classic early in his career. Think I finally saw it for the first time a few years ago and really liked it
Don't Look Now is an excellent film as well, borderline horror.
Finally got my mom to watch it and she liked it as much as I do
Why do all these channels call massively popular classics “slept on”?
This version of the movie is iconic and has constant parodies and imitations. Nobody has “slept” on this.
It's easily one of the greatest horror movies.
I've got all three films mentioned here, and I kinda think it moves in a trilogy in a way- from a small town, to a city, to a military installation. That said, I like all of them, but I think the third version is the best one on screen. The original is tight and effective, but limited by the technology of the time. This one has great effects and bigger themes and tension, but drags in spots. The third combines the best of both films, and makes a tight, visually effective thriller. But it wouldn't be possible without the amazing work in this version. R.I.P Donald Sutherland.
While the ‘56 movie is good, this truly is the best version of the story. The cast is just perfect thanks to Donald, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum and Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy. The paranoia is even more palpable especially with such level-headed leads & man that ending shot of Donald Sutherland uttering that horrifying shriek will forever haunt your nightmares
Hands down the best telling of that story. Unless of course you survived the COVTARDS from a few years ago. LOL
Didn't know he died. Bummer.
A remake that improves upon the original. Gross out make-up FX still holds up today. Kaufman went on to direct the terrific 60's NY street gang flick "The Wanderers".
I saw this for the first time about fifteen years ago at my local cinematheque. The ending was incredible and horrible. And is one of my favourite reaction gifs ever.
This movie didn't impact me the way it should have. Mostly because the ending was spoiled for me before I ever had a chance to watch the movie. Honestly, spoiling this one really ruins it for new viewers.
I once freaked out my then girlfriend doing the ending point scream some years back. She came into the room and I was quiet and she asked me if I was okay. So I pointed and did the scream and ahe freaked out lmfao
I can’t believe Sutherland was never nominated for an actor
This movie is fantastic, but the final climax drags out a lot I feel. The weakest part of the whole movie.
The ending though ,fantastic!
It also makes you ask that one intriguing question:
Is it _true_ what they say. Does the pods transfer your consciousness entirely, or does it just suck you out so you die from extreme dehydration?
That's the question. The similar Question whatever or not the Thing knows what it is, or if the host keeps going on in blissful innocence.
It is a perfect movie. Though not horror, check or Sutherland in Kate Bush’s weather weaponing music video, Cloudbusting
Noticed one thing throughout Donalds career. He never really screams! I do not count the shriek at the end of Bodysnatcher as it is not he who produces the sound.
I love wings!
It was better when it was called Cheers.
🙏
Body is great but the great train robbery is my favorite
Uh. You didn’t mention Don’t Look Now?!!!
The best was the original version in black & white from 1956. The 78 Remake was good too. The 1993 film was pretty dull and average at best. The 2006 version The Invasion was pretty average at best too.
Please change the thumbnail! I know the movie is super old but you are spoiling the ending for all newcomers! It's such a major shock ending! I hate it whenever I see this film spoiled 😒
I know this movie is loved, but I hated it. I read the book before I saw it, and it left so much out, and it changed so many other things. The book was so suspenseful that I couldn't put it down and would stay up late to read. The movie, I'm sorry to say, was not that good. The book however is excellent and one of my favorite of all time. I recommend it.
I finished playing Fallout 3 this week. Searched about an alien called "Abomination" that appears in the game. The Wiki said they were based on "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", so I just watched the movie half an hour ago. Even if I read the plot before on the Wiki, it still dove me into agony. Great movie!
The Invasion with Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman is great too.
