      Mossberg 500 and Mossberg Mav 88. My 500 went down opening weekend and I hunted the entire season with the Mav 88 with a Hevi Shot Extended Range choke. Had ZERO problems out of that gun. Would oil it up every week and it shot like a champ.

      I'm now 46 yrs old, my first shotgun was a NE single shot 20 mod. Choke at about 13 yrs old. Later my old brother sold me his Mossberg 500 12 ga at maybe 16 yrs old. At the age of 18 three months after my birthday my older brother and I drove to a sportinf goods store in New Orleans. I asked to hold a new Browning BPS 10 ga. I asked how much, he said $525, but it's on sale for $485, I said sold, my brother's mouth dropped and his eyes were huge. At 21 I retired my Mossberg 500 and bought a new Browning Gold Hunter 3-1/2". Up till two years ago she was my primary shotgun, some 800+ ducks, dove, geese, squirrels and God knows what else ; I retired her after some work done and still isn't working. So a few years ago I bought my wife a Beretta 300 12ga. She absolutely loves it. I let her try my Remington 1100 20 ga, my NE 20ga, my Browning Gold Hunter 12 ga, but I never let her shoot the 10ga. We bought her a Mossberg auto , she didn't like anything else till the Beretta 12 ga 3". Last year before duck season I bought a new Beretta Xtreme Plus 12 ga 3-1/2" in grass camouflage. I love it. But I will be getting my Gold Hunter repaired for a back up. Thanks to all the footage and information. We love it. Shannon and Sharon.

    After hunting for over 25 years, waterfowl hunting has recently become an obsession for me(channels like this one have helped me a lot). I use a browning hunter 3.5” semi-hevi 10#4&federal Tss/black cloud #3&9. I jump shoot with waders and kayak, also try to decoy in open water, with moderate success. I use stock I/c choke and can hit them within 30 yards. They are hard to hit but beautiful, tasty and fun. So far primarily wood ducks, but would like to get a mallard. I want a lighter gun I can keep shouldered longer…

    always seem to enjoy your videos. just love talking and hunting ducks since early teens. Started with single-shot Winchester 51.???? The first auto was Rem. 2 3/4 1100 at 16 yrs. old. Moved to a Browning Gold 3 1/2 about20 yrs. ago because of steel shot. Benelli is the gun to go with if I was looking to change. Too old to make that investment now. I use Browning Silver Hunter (waterfowl edition). Bought it last season chose it over a Benelli Super Vinci. Love everything about it but being gas recoil system gets a nasty cylinder burn on the magazine tube. Needs a bit cleaning after each use, which I enjoy anyway. I'm kinda clean freak with my firearms. I would've gone for an A5 or Maxus but they were a bit more expensive. You know browning is "The Best there is!!" lol.

    Very good video and I agree with “ what might be good for you may not work for me”. I from Louisiana and last year I bought an A5 and my hit percentage went up. I just use the modified factory choke that came with the gun. All of my hunting is done in a Tupelo/cypress brake so most of my shots are 30 yards or closer. Many times the birds drop below the trees and I lose sight of them and they are hard to pick up and follow. When I do finally find them I have to get on them quickly and I think this is where the A5 has helped. That square back receiver must help me get on target better and quicker because I noticed a difference in my ability to snap shoot a bird. Before the A5 I shot a Browning Maxus which I like but I believe I like the A5 better. I shoot 2-3/4”, 1-1/8 ounce #6 1400 FPS steel most of the time. I know that may sound untrue but it is the truth. As long as the birds are within 30 yards the steel does the trick most of the time. Later in the season when the teal are gone and it’s mostly gadwall, occasionally mallards, and shovelers we switch to number 4 shot. The gun cycles the 2-3/4” light loads with no problems. Really enjoy your videos - keep them coming.

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  4 года назад

      I also tried the maxus, but didn’t like it as well as the A5. Yes, I know several guys who also shoot light steel and love it for close range. Thanks for your thoughts, I really appreciate it!

    Hey there, I love that you have shot your 870 for so long! I did the same for awhile but made the transition last year to an autoloader. I chose the Benelli m2 after having the opportunity to use both gas and inertia system guns. I decided on the inertia system for its simplicity. I decided on the Benelli first, because it had the best fitment for me right out the box and secondly because of the overall quality. I chose the m2 over other Benelli models because I don’t shoot 3.5s and it felt better in the hands over the sbe3. I attribute that to the foregrip style, also found on the sbe2. On top of all that I got it on sale 400 under msrp! Couldn’t turn it down.

    Many years ago I bought a Browning Gold Hunter auto. It worked fine until it didn’t and it picked a cold, snowy day where we had more ducks and geese than I had ever seen. Long story short, it kept jamming so I had what amounted to a single shot. Back then I didn’t get to go duck hunting very often so having equipment failure was heartbreaking.
    I went out the next day and bought a Browning BPS Stalker in 3 1/2” with a 28” barrel. I know a lot of guys swear by their autos but in my experience nothing beats the reliability of a pump. My BPS isn’t as sexy as a lot of my other shotguns, but it is the one I reach for for ducks and geese. It’s also my favorite turkey gun.
    I think as I age and become more recoil adverse I’ll switch back to an auto.
    For upland birds I love my Browning feather lite over and under.
    Recently my wife overheard me telling my son in-law if I could only keep one shotgun, it’d be the BPS. She was quick to say, “Why did you spend so much on a safe full of beautiful, expensive shotguns if you like that ugly thing so much?” Fortunately she was smiling.

    I have the A5 and also the sx3. Love both the guns. I do prefer the sx3 though. Its amazing how trusty the gun has been. My sx3 has over 6k rounds through it.
    I generally run my A5 for hunting geese and run my sx3 for duck hunting.
    I am going to try running a 20 gauge over/under this year. Never hunted with one, just started shooting mine the other day.
    Have a personal goal to shoot a 6 bird limit with the over/under this year. 😁

    Stoeger m3500 waterfowl edition. I really like the inertia system that it utilizes and for the features it has and the price. It’s a good firearm. Plus comes with a sling ( I don’t use it) and the has an weight that can be added in the buttstock to help dampen those heavier loads that will hit hard.

      @@neonwhitea.1548 The vinci is incredible, It's very light and is balanced just before the bolt. It also has very little recoil and it throws very good patterns with hevi metal and everything else i've tried. The best part is it breaks down into 3 pieces, the bolt is made of only 8 pieces, and the trigger mechanism also comes out in one piece all for cleaning. You're right about gear. One man's trash is another mans treasure. What works, works.
    It's not so much for the fish to bite the lure, but more so the fisherman!
    I've been thru 2, 870s. Salt water and sand takes it toll on anything.
    I won a Bennelli SBE 2 at a DU function, about 15 years ago and after a few seasons, I retired the 870 for a back up gun. The SBE has been my main gun.
    This past season the inertia spring sprung with shooting a bull sprig. Luckily the 870 was waiting. I hunted a couple time with it until the ejector spring sprung on it.
    I ordered and waited for the SBE replacement spring and put the 870 in with a gunsmith. The gunsmith said it would be $300 for the 870 repair.
    Eff that! That gun (20 years old) wasn't worth $300.
    I replaced the SBE inertia recoil spring with a stainless spring and finished the season.
    My shoulder thanks me too!
    I recently bought a Stoger pump, for a back up.
    Now, my shoulder is threatening a strike if I have to use the pump.
    SBE 3 is supposed to be a better gun than the SBE 2.

My hunting partner shoots a Remington 870 from the 1980s and I shoot a Browning Citori from the 1970s. We camp out for 2 weeks (tents) so I like stocking foot waders early in the season that I can completely turn inside out and they are bone dry the next morning. Beside duck boats we use home-made pirogues that are 30 years old and are easily transported in our boats. I like your tip hanging ducks by their feet.

    Bought a new style Browning A-5 2 seasons ago. I love it. I think you make a good point about the gear Joel. In my years of experience it’s been different everyday. There is no best anything. Some things work better in certain situations better than others. What works for one person won’t do as well as others. Just like the ducks we all sounds a little different. I’m a fairly strong caller on j-frame and cut downs. Get out and try everything and don’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn. You won’t kill limits anywhere near everyday. I learn way more on days I don’t kill many ducks than killing 8 limits in 30 minutes. It’s like most things. You get out what you put in.

    Try the Franchi Affinity Elite 3 or 3.5. I like mine. They come in Optifade Timber and Optifade Marsh camo pattern. They are fairly light and every review I have seen talks about how they are almost jam free. I chose mine over the Benelli M2 3 inch. I shot my Franchi pheasant hunting and love the sights. They come with 3 chokes.
    Great videos. I want to learn duck hunting this fall and winter. I have hunted pheasant for years.

    Joel- my first shotgun was an 11-87 Premier Upland. I cut the stock down 3/4 of an inch to fit. The 11/87 points like my hand, but it’s too pretty for a salt marsh. I started shooting an SX4 Compact two years ago and they fit/point similarly. You might find the SX4 points like your 870. Thank you for the great videos!

    Thanks for another great video Joel! I totally agree with you. As far as gear goes whatever works best for you is the gear to go with. I've used a lot of different things and have preferences, but my advice to people would be to not try to keep up with the latest and greatest, but use the things you have and try to be the best hunter you can be with what you have and slowly as to your arsenal. I shot a lot of birds in my early days with a $10 dozen of garage sale mallards and a used Mossberg 500.

    Benelli Super Vinci I’ve had it 8 years and it’s a good fun for me especially with Patternmaster Choke but that’s my preference it’s what works for me might not work for everybody. In my bag I always have my duck calls and a few specialty calls like a wood duck call or cut down call. One thing I like to have is a wood call too those woods calls have a different sound to them than acrylic. Ducks aren’t any different than humans in sounds we like some like a single reed acrylic when others might like a cut down. I always have my goose calls Canada and Snow/Speck in my area we’ve got a variety so you’ve got to be prepared. On my lanyard I’ve always had a compass so I can get wind direction and know where the sun will be so I can setup on the east side to be in the shadows if I’m not hunting a permanent blind. When it comes to decoys I like Dakota’s and Higdon Battleships because of the detail on the Dakota and how bright the higdons all especially in the timber. When I’m thinking about setup I go back to scouting and put out a variety of species in my setup from what I’ve been seeing in there. When it comes to motion I like water motion splashing ducks swimming think about what ducks look like on the water when you watch them. They are splashing chasing each other dipping under the water picking feathers you want to imitate that. Now I’m not totally against spinning wings I use them but I know which spots they work better than others. When I do use them I put them in like buck brush around the open hole so they just see the flash and don’t key in on the decoy only. When it comes to clothes waders and camo I seriously think that personal preference all the stuff they’ve got out today is a whole lot better than what I started out with. Canvas Waders Waxed Hunting jackets put on multiple layers to stay warm and bread bags on your feet to keep them warm. My first blind bag was an old military gas mask bag. I will say this about clothes make sure they match your surroundings that you hunt in you don’t won’t to stick out.

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  4 года назад

      Very good thoughts and good advice. I don't miss those years of canvas waders! I fell in every time I hunted... I always had a change of clothes!

    • @gooseflatwaterfowlers
      @gooseflatwaterfowlers 4 года назад

      Canvas waders were tough as all get out never had a pair to leak but they where like freezers real awkward to walk in cause they were so stiff. You might remember this when the old Gore-Tex clothing came out you talk about a game changer I still have my old Gore-Tex Columbia Brown Camo Jacket it’s a classic. Then a few years later neoprene waders that was the ultimate game changer especially the Cabelas Ultimates 1000 gram that came out in 2000. I remember my dad having a pair of Herters PVC waders they were so cold because you’d sweat in them things so bad. Think about how much the camo patterns have changed when I started it was Brown Camo then Mossy Oak original Bottomland and Shadow Grass and later on Break Up and what we’ve got now is amazing the detail that’s in these patterns.

    I only came across this today. Yes. The Best Ever descriptions are tedious. I often divide a product into its essential parts and grading them on those parts. I then look at VFM (value-for-money) and expectations. These are both subjective, and they reflect what's important to me. I appreciate all the advice you give, but I'm okay with steel shot. That said, I haven't given all the alternatives a chance, and sometimes it's just easier to buy steel. I would never say steel is best, just like I've never heard you say anything about steel, except that it's not right for you. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for answering me. I will cherish the memories. You know the modern stuff looks nice. But to me nothing replaces the old raspy duck call my friend made especially for me and it works great. Or the old decoys made with a friend late nights in his old garage used for a work shop. Painted over a few times. Or taking our 100 year old side by side shotguns to the skeet range
    And almost breaking 25. To me new stuff is that new stuff. It's the older hand made things that when you look at it brings a tear to your eye and lump in your throat. You hold that 100 year old A H grade A fox shotgun and try to hear all the old stories it could tell. Yes I like old fox shotguns too. These old things are treasures to me and now I'm trying to pass this on to my son and daughter. When they're not to busy we do get out to the blind. Might not get a lot of ducks but do a lot of talking and laughing. I pray that you have a safe and memorable season and maybe even get a few ducks. Thanks again. Look forward to that cup of coffee.

    The best gun for you joel is the one that fits. I'm a beretta fan personally but just because they fit well and have lots of different adjustments for cast and length of pull. A300 and a AL 391. Been shooting sporting clays for almost 20 years and wore out every spring in the 391 as well as my firing pin. Still love the gun and always cycles whatever I put through it as long as I clean it every so often. My opinion is if it starts with a B it's worth it. Try a bunch out and see which one feels the best to you. Ps I'm not a fan of the a400 xterme. Too clunky for me. Benelli super sport is an amazing 20ga also. Shot them several times. Browning maxus is another nice gun I've been able to shoot. Dont know how they hold up though. Good luck love your content and great advice.
