    Oh yes, the VTEC solenoid assembly. Had to replace that on my 05 CR-V. From my experience usually the only time that those things go bad is either due to lack of oil changes or just simply due to age if the car has a lot of miles on it as well. Very easy to do and not horribly expensive unlike some other things on these older Hondas.

    13 Years as a technician and master tech for Acura, i never once saw a VTEC solenoid fail, not by me or by one of the other 24 techs that i work with,, in 13 years! .. 10 times out of 10, if it throws a VTEC code it's because the car is very Low On Oil .. Very low.. Which causes interruption of oil pressure to the solenoid and a VTEC code Will set.. , when that happens the car defaults to a "Limp home" mode which makes the computer limit engine rpm to 3000 rpm.(unless you cycle the key, then it will drive normally, unless it occurs again)) Scotty just unplugged it to set the code for this video no doubt

    Vtec has been kicking oil all over my engine bay for past two years. I didn't tighten down my vtec solenoid enough after doing my first headgasket ever on my daily driver. Finally troubleshot that P2646 a actuator arm system blah blah blah yesterday and tracked it down to that. It's fixed. No more CEL, no more oily engine bay and constantly checking/filling the oil. Replaced the o2 sensor yesterday as well, that got ruined from driving around with blown headgasket two years ago. Damn those things are expensive. No more cylinder misfires either!

    This is a great starting point. On the "element" you WILL be removing the left motor mount to remove the power steering pump and tensioner pully to clean the little screen behind the cover. the hardest part is the belt reinstall its just time consuming about an hour. The solenoid in the back of the engine is tough. remove the power steering hose and metal support bracket. I tied mine over to the driver side with a bungee strap. after you remove the 2 electrical connections there are 2 plastic wire anchors on the metal heat shield they are difficult to remove. The rest is fairly simple

    • @boomerguy9935
      @boomerguy9935 2 года назад

      You did it the hard way. You do not have to remove anything other than the oil filter for access to the VVY assembly.
      I replaced the filter/O-ring on my Element and my Accord (same K24 engine) by moving the power steering pump hose bracket out of the way and holding it in place with a bungee cord. After undoing the front connections from above, I removed the oil filter (you should change the oil and filter anyway) for better access from below with the car on front ramps. It is also much easier to use the torque wrench from below.

    I have an '01 that does just what he is saying about poor performance - keep in mind.... when the car is cold the solenoid works fine --- you really have to have HOT oil and have to run the car for about 45 minutes at highway speeds - then slow up a bit - and then... really romp on the gas pedal to make it kick down a gear, when it tries to upshift - that is when the 3,000rpm jumps happen (Engine shutting down)... It sort of reminds you of a rev limiter kicking in... Easy fix - like he said - just hard to see. Thanks Scotty - you've helped me in the past with some things... :)

    I had to do one of those once. I don't remember the exact engine but it was on my Niece's Accord. One of those three bolts was in a position we couldn't get to. We ended up having to modify the socket into a wrench like doohickey. All of my wrenches were too thick, a socket could get on but there was no room for a ratchet. We cut the socket down shorter and welded it to a wrench we cut.

    I think we've seen this Element show up at Scotty's garage before. Honda's K24 engine has an excellent reputation for reliability. With him mentioning dirty oil as the possible culprit, it seems like maybe the owner isn't the best about checking/changing the oil on schedule. It's that kind of crap that makes me concerned about buying a car used. Why is it so hard for some people to do basic maintenance?

    I use a mirror with a handle to hold to see the bolts to screw them back in, makes the job so easy..... but i sure have experience doing it.. every single time it is time to change the oil after i change it variable solenoid goes bad, The oil is not clogged up just regular oil in color when time to change it... I have had to do this from day one of 4 years after every oil change and this part is not cheap around 104.00 ... And so far I have not figured out why it goes out each time I change the oil it usually goes out within two days of changing the oil... i use Castrol GTX High Mileage 5W-20 Engine Oil ... i know its the right grade, and that brand i would think would be great for it.

    Nothing would fix mine. Found the issue changing valve cover gasket. A plug (bolt) had fallen out and was laying up in the head. This was downstream of the VTEC Selenoid so it wouldn't build oil pressure. Loctite fixed my problem now she sails up to 6-grand no problem.

    Is it possible that the oil pump could be weak causing low oil pressure only asking because we've done this repair and visually checked the wiring harness for damage cleaned connectors changed oil and we changed the screen under the belt tensioner also do you think you could do a video on how to check a wire with a multimeter for a short to ground and a short to power and what to do about it if you find one

    When I heard you say it wouldn't go over 3000 rpm my ears perked a bit. I've got a 91 Pontiac Sunbird that hesitates at 3000 rpm, then when you give her a good amount more gas she bucks up to 5k in an instant. Hoping you have some insight as to what that might be.

    Had a ruff running '02 Corolla with VVT, Tech showed me a cracked solenoid, and a chip of it that was not able to be retrieved with a magnet fell into a cylinder, and took 1-2 hrs to retrieve. Total repair bill, $570.00. What would make the solenoid crack ? I think he cracked it trying to remove it. BTW, he used Alldata shop manual.

    I bought a 2020 Accord with 56 miles on it. The VTC Valve was diagnosed at the dealer as being the culprit for problems. Symptoms included: Jerking or Bucking while driving on the hiway, Engine stalled five times while sitting in a fast food line in drive. How could that part be bad on a brand new car?

    People need to be careful with those VTEC engines. My buddy has one and he says when VTEC kicks in the torque is so high it can actually flip the car over! Of course this is only possible once you put on the NOS stickers.

    Scot. i bought a 2001 nissan pathfinder 4wd with a bad engine. I bought everything to get to run like new( engine rebuild kit that included everything, timing kit including the oil pump, water pump, belts some hoses, oil pressure sender switch, even the 2 thermostats. I took it to a shop to get it rebuild and they did but after a few days the engine light came on and it had p1135 variable timing solenoid bank 1, and p0138 and p0139 O2 sensor 2 bank 1 slow response and high voltage. I replace both solenoids, erased the codes and did a drive test and completed the cycle twice and same codes keep on coming each time. overheated going uphill, AC on or off, the radiator was also new. after a week or so, the light turned off on its own. So got it pass smog in california. the light came on after driving long distances. the car feels fine when its cold but when it get to normal temp starts to loss some power. since the shop i took it to is really far i need some ideas on what it can try to fix it. when cold and start the vehicle the oil light blinks for like 2 seconds and it turns off. since there is no coolant leaks or compression going to the coolant and most of the components have been changed i figured is probably something to do with the oil pressure. i was at the shop few times and saw everything been washed piece by piece so i don't think is the vain that goes from the oil pump the solenoids. everything was order to exact size. the only i can not say i seen been done is the heads. supposedly they had their own head shop. one last thing is that when at normal temp if you try to hold it to 1500 rpm starts to jump(ex: from 1400 to 1600) nut if you just step on the has normal you wouldn't feel it. many people has the same issue with this vehicle. I have seen at many different forums and they don't have a clue. the air pockets have also been released. please let me know what you think and I'm sure it will help many people. thank you ..... hope to here from you..

      realize hardly anyone these days rebuilds an engine correctly. Guy just did a crap job. Personally I advise customers to junk those when the engines go out, or look for a low mileage used engine. You're chasing the dragon now, good luck, but realize it's probably just poor rebuilding work on that engine.

    Hey there Scotty! I just bought a used car, 2008 Toyota Yaris (Sedan) with a 1.3L engine (engine: 2NZ-FE) that has 36,000 miles.. I've been having idle problems when the AC is on.. The normal idle is around 650-700 rpm.. but when the AC compressor kicks in, the idle drops to around 450-500 rpm.. I already cleaned the throttle body and mass air flow sensor, I also replaced the sparkplugs but still the rpm would drop when the AC is on.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 лет назад +1

      +Jonelle Loresca try a new iac valve, pray it's not the compressor going out

    • @jonelleloresca5800
      @jonelleloresca5800 9 лет назад

      +Scotty Kilmer Where can I find the IAC valve? is it near the throttle body? These things are new to me.. I'm not used to working on modern cars where everything is controlled by the ECU. And by the way.. What are the symptoms of a bad compressor? The AC seems to be cooling fine in 90°F weather...

    Scotty. I have a similar problem. It causes intermittent hesitation. Im suspecting its the same valve you mentioned. I have no check engine light or codes for it. But i noticed it is more frequent in hot weather. Do problems like this get enhanced with environmental temps?
