You can’t, so our impulse is to ignore the problem, turn off your brains empathy and compassion to prevent being overwhelmed, especially when the casualties in question are from a group you’re biased against anyway. that's..not EXACTLY true. he's not planning to convert the whole populace... he has the same problem the master AI from the movie version of I Robot had: kill 25% of the population to save 75% is just good math in his book. remember that in the future cable describes, Earth is a Utopia for humans..not a dystopia like days of Future past. Of course it SUCKS if you're a mutant...but again..that's not his problem. Point of fact...Nimrod's original programming actually had him HELPING humans and even adopting a human identity. There's a recent storyline..during the "No more mutants" phase if i remember correctly" where Bastion actually offers to HELP the Xmen...after all he wouldn't need to cull the population for GENERATIONS by his calculations. the prime directive is kill or CONTAIN all mutants" after all..he has leeway. He is of course turned down. Now yes, the most recent version of Nimrod is different from the original, and is part of some grand AI takeover...but it's literally a different timeline and a different character. Bastion meant well...within the limits of Sentinel programming.
this is also highlighted in the Juston Seifert "freindly" sentinel..where the Prime Directive can't be removed..so the kid buries it under DOZENS of directives that basicly turn it into the Iron Giant. prime directive "never abandon Juston." secondary directive" 'protect Juston." "tertiary "protect self" etc. there's a really awesome storyline where Emma frost, invested with the power of the Phoenix, casually waltzes into Avengers academy compound as part of her quest to destroy every sentinel on the planet. Emma, who has NEVER been an empathic person, and has been even less so since she mind raped a sociopathic telepath who was less powerful but more experienced than her so she could STRAL that experience(yes it's canon, look it up) became even MORE emotionally distant after being invested with the Phoenix force. She shows up, and the Sentinel PANICS..it recognizes the Phoenix AND Frost, and as far as it's concern, Juston shouldn't be anywere NEAR her. So like an overexcited guard dog..he protects Juston by attacking. the fight does not go well. During the fight Juston in injured, and the Sentinel is on it's last legs...Juston is BEGGING it to flee but Frost hs NO intention of stopping, and the sentinel knows this. so it overrides it's own prime directive and throws itself at frost to protect Juston. it is prommptly destroyed, though Quicksilver winds up salvaging it's AI core via some sleight of hand and they rebuild it after frost leaves. it's a sweet story.

After watching this episode, Bastion has quickly become one of my favourite X-Men villains. Bastion is such a great villain so far in this show, and his plan is genius yet horrific to think about. Him being a mix of Nimrod & Master Mold is wild. I love how charismatic he is with his belief that mutants supposedly take away humans' chances of the future like a twisted charismatic entrepreneur/salesman pitching his belief onto your average human middle class guy spreading more fear and insecurities about mutants to inevitably get them to act on saod fears. What's even worse is that there is a level of truth and meta-commentary from his philosophy and how he manipulates blue-collar class racism and bigotry normal humans create based on their fears. Not to mention the fact that such a big part of the population are secretly Human Sentinel sleeper agents and didn't even know it is SCARY ASF! These things can also reproduce and extend the human population, making the implications even more terrifying.
Funny how Gyrich was teasing this fate in the first episode when he said, *"Tolerance is extinction"* , basically meaning that whenever humanity starts tolerating mutants, humans will inevitably believe they'll go extinct, therefore believing whenever mutants start tolerating humans, mutants need to go extinct, hence what happened in Genosha.
I also appreciate that Doom was against Bastions actions of genocide against Genosha, despite his apparent involvement with Bastions plans. It pretty in character for Doom, since he to was persecuted and had to watch his people be hunted down since he came from a Romanian family.

This is basically the concept behind the patriot act and the matrix where you give away your own individual freedoms/identity for the sake of security or eliminating your enemy. He breeds mutants because he wants to create better and more powerful mutants because it fulfills his vision, but that DOESN'T mean he is a mutant rights advocate or a mutant ally, specially considering his eugenics program that would give even nazis pause.
In fact, the ONE line he does not seem to cross is promoting mass omnicide, considering he turned on Apocalypse for that. But other than that? Anything is fair game as long as it furthers his experiments.
Bastion does not seek to eliminate the mutants, but to elevate the "normal" humans above them and keep the mutants around as labor after that, which affords Sinister plenty of space to experiment, both on human potential as Prime Sentinels AND on whatever mutants come afterwards.

It's funny in a sick way, because Bastion's describing a universal human behavior. Everyone, without exception, does this.
It's why you don't look at every face you pass on a city sidewalk, or people next to you in an elevator. It's why you can hear about something horrible happening to a group of people a thousand miles away and never think of it again.
It's not callousness, it's your brain filtering out stressful information you think you can't do anything about. And it's the only way anybody ever *functions* . No exceptions.
The only variance is how *much* you do this; whether you're the person horrified to action by mass atrocity, or the one so desperate to avoid feeling bad you turn into one of the worthless trashbags who excuses it. Or anywhere in between.
Bastion's a monster, but he's not *wrong* about this. It's why Magneto's answer to it was to make a problem *nobody* could ignore.

Interesting that Mr. Sinister is there as I thought he was more into exploring mutant kind with Apocalypse in the original cartoon. But I seem to remember there is a clone of Sinister who is more interested in improving humans over mutants.

Put myself as a target here: why they always make distinction between human and mutans, as they are not the same species? The x gene, although if may result in severe dismorphism, it's really enough to separate humanity and mutants in a biological sense? Also Bastion is either in bad faith or total denial: how turning humans in dormant setinel preserve humanity in any capacity?
What? cyborgs are better than mutant now?! Lol(not)

from the information I gathered from some of the comic stuff (this might include view of some extremist group, not just Bastion himself) and TLDR version are some human civies fears the mutant because what Magneto did and the probability of latent X-Gene that is too destructive by the time they are activated.
Then this fear get weaponized by extremist and politican, in the name of keeping human civies safe.
As for Bastion, I can't really explain this with spoiler but he is a byproduct of Master Mold and Nimrod merging into a singular being, and got fed with informations of anti mutant propaganda.
hope this help and soz for spoiling some

Come one, humans have created social constructed labels to separate us by skin tone and\or physical appearance. It is not too far fetch that will do the same with those that have the x gene and those that do not.

Bastion is acting in bad faith. In reality, the Sentinels determined that the best way to carry out their programming (eliminating mutants) was to cut mutants off at the source (humanity) by seizing control of the entire planet. Bastion is just taking the next logical step of converting humans into cyborgs so they can't procreate mutants in the first place (with the added bonus of said cyborgs being enslaved anti-mutant killing machines).
Bastion is literally not human, and is goal is not to preserve humanity, but eliminate mutants, by any means necessary. He is just savvy enough to play on human fears towards this end. Master Mold said as far back as season 1 that humans and mutants are the same species and that simply eliminating mutants is not logical unless you are also doing something about humans.
(though to answer the question- yes, the X-Gene would in fact be enough to draw a distinction between humans and mutants; regardless of whether they qualify as a "species" or not, they are clearly a distinct entity, as both humans AND mutants acknowledge. A better question would be why all mutants are lumped together as one entity despite they often radical differences between mutant individuals- Xavier is totally different from Beast, who is totally different from Mystique, who is totally different from Wolverine etc; a shared sense of persecution and a special gene is really all they have in common).

In the X-men TAS universe. Magneto as early as Season 1 of Episode 3, try to jump-start the Mutant-Human War by launching nuclear missiles and killing U.S politicians (Senator Kelly). This understandably cause massive scare among the civilian population which lead to extremist politicians and factions (like Friends of Humanity and Trasks)
Bastion is lying out of his ass because he wants to kill off humanity. He knows that humans and mutants are the same (as Master Mold outright states that mutants are humans in the original series) but he actively stokes the flames of racism and division via propaganda to start a war.
