    Nowadays, LED technology is vastly emerged and LED-based devices are visible everywhere. A typical use case of LEDs is to put them in series and drive them using a high voltage and limited current power supply, which means a boost converter supply, but component manufacturers soon realized there is a high demand for components that are specifically designed to drive LEDs; work efficiently, reliably, and have a small package size.
    In this article, I have introduced an emergency LED light circuit using the SOT23-6 MP3202 chip. The board is compact and can be powered using a mobile phone USB Type C, a power bank, or any portable 5V power source. The controller chip is advanced and high frequency (1.4MHz), so the PCB layout should be designed with considerations such as start-shape grounding, low impedance ground path, and plane PCB NET connection. The circuit uses a series-parallel combination of 24 30-lumen 2835-package LEDs. The LEDs’ color temperature is 4000K, which shines close to daylight.
    With minor modifications, the power rating of this LED light can go as high as 12W, although in such a scenario the circuit consumes a high amount of current that depletes batteries quickly, which is in contrast with the purpose of a compact, portable, and long-lasting emergency light.
    According to the datasheet: “The MP3202 is a step-up converter designed for driving up to 39 white LEDs (13 strings of 3 LEDs each) from a 5V system rail. The MP3202 uses a current mode, fixed frequency architecture to regulate the LED current, which is measured through an external current sense resistor. Its low 104mV feedback voltage reduces power loss and improves efficiency. The OV pin monitors the output voltage and turns off the converter if an over-voltage condition is present due to an open circuit condition. The MP3202 includes under-voltage lockout, current limiting, and thermal overload protection preventing damage in the event of an output overload. The MP3202 is available in small 6-pin TSOT23 or 8-pin QFN (2mm x 2mm) packages.”
