A little known feature of the Dock is the ability to add spacers between the apps to group or categorise them. So, as you can see I have a group for my iWorks apps, then I have - I guess you could call them my media apps. Then over here I have my email and chat apps, and at the end OS related apps.
You can add as many spacers as your wish and move them around as if they were a normal app icon. To remove them, simply right click and Remove From Dock.
Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t make it easy to add these spacers. There’s no option in Settings or Preferences that I’m aware of to add them. Instead there are two ways that I know of to do it.
The first is to add a line of code in Terminal. Open Terminal from the Utilities folder in Applications, or by typing terminal into Spotlight. Here’s the line of code you need to add, which I’ve also included in the description of this video, so you can copy, paste it from there.
Having entered your line of code you need to refresh the Dock, so to do that type killall followed by a space and the word Dock with a capital D.
Hopefully you’ll see a spacer appear in your Dock and you drag it to wherever you want it. TO add more spacers you simply repeat the process. Enter the line of code in Terminal and refresh your Dock.
If you're not keen on using Terminal, there is another way, which is to use a really excellent free utility app called Onyx. If you’re familiar with my videos, you’ll know I’ve recommended Onyx several times for lots of different things. I think it’s made by a French company called Titanium Software. I’ll leave a link in the description below this video.
Having downloaded and installed it in the usual way, when you open it you’ll need to provide your password because several of the features require admin permissions to make changes. Click on Parameters in the menu followed by the Dock tab. Here you’ll find the option to add spacers. The nice thing about Onyx, is that it lets you choose between using small or large spacers. I actually prefer the smaller spacers since they take up less room. Clicking Apply will refresh the Dock and you can move them or remove them as before. This left right option lets you add a spacer to either side of the divider. So if I choose right instead of left, and apply the change, you’ll see I now have a spacer here, on the right side of the divider. Similar to Terminal, you can add multiple spacers by just clicking Apply as many times as you need.
