I think the battery link isn't working. I have the big Anker battery pack I was looking to connect to the camera but this seems like a decent alternative what's the battery life on it? Can you update the link please?
For the next video, I would love to see some comparison footage to see what the stabilization quality looks like handheld vs. with the extra weight of the rig vs. with a shoulder rig to see what quality of stabilization we can reasonably expect out of each. The rig looks cool, but I'd really like to see it being used!
Ryan De La Torre It could be work with ibis(gh5) or with lens with IS. For setup without IS and IBIS we need point of contact. For this reason this setup need easyrig, i think .
Me too! would love to see how stable the footage is from this handheld rig with native MFT IS lenses on the bmpcc 4k and compare with non IS native MFT lenses. And then compare same with shoulder rig on pocket 4k. It would be good to see some footage Caleb using the rig, thanks.
Dude. I've been saying this to all of my friends for so long. 1) There is a difference between "shaky" and "handheld". Handheld in cinema is commonly done on the shoulder with proper balancing of the camera. It gives nice movement to the shot, but it isn't shaky or jittery. Like you say, it's about the weight of the camera and how it's balanced. Shaky footage is what you get when you try to handhold a dslr by itself. 2) Gimbals are really cool, but the look they deliver is sort of like a little bit of handheld mixed with steadicam. There isn't the weight to it that a steadicam offers. It's an interesting look, but overused I would say. Good handheld footage is hard to get, but it looks so nice when done properly!
I've found a lot of helpful tips in your videos, but your presence and voice is so pleasing, it's fun to watch these even if the subject of the video wasn't really interesting to me.
This is a really nice evolution of your former ultimate handheld rig, which I ended up copying from you. I'm now planning to adopt your new placement of the left handle. Great stuff as always!
This is great! Thanks for making this. I am waiting on my XT3 to come in the mail and this is exactly what I was going to look into doing. You've done the footwork, shared it, and we appreciate you for that!
Looking forward to that X-T3 guide! Been working in post production (editing/animation/vfx) for about 13 years. Only recently have I decided to take the plunge into the production side of things. So I picked up an X-T3 for home use and I'm having a blast. Your channel has been super helpful as I've started this venture. Thanks for everything. Keep up the good work!
You expressed my exact thoughts. This is exactly whats needed for full control and move-ability without getting that gittery handheld footage- I'd love the exact same setup run through with the BMPCC 4k!
Thanks for the blog link - great step-by-step guidance. Been looking at trying to build up a compact rig for my Nikon Z6 and this seems to be a great alternative to the VERY expensive pre-built rigs.
I LOVE the single battery set-up. I'm currently using the X-T3 battery grip, which is great BUT it means power management on 3 dinky little batteries. This is an awesome alternative.
I've just been building something really similar for my Sony a7iii. Got a couple awesome recommendations from you over time. Thanks for sharing this rig!
Like this very much!!! I do wedding, prewedding and clip video, sometimes i love to work without gimbles especially when i shot prewedding video, but the problem is many clients often seeing my simple setup (cam, lens, and shotgun mic only) and (maybe) begin to hestitating the quality of my work, yeaa they don't said it but you can see how they stare you when they doubting you 😊 your video inspired me to re-setup my stuff with the rig, extra handle, etc so i can simply doing handheld shot but keep it look professional. Nice video of yours! Thank you sir
I realize this is an old video, but thank you Caleb for taking the time to put all this rig info together! I've watched a ton of your videos the past week as I am building out a Sony ZVE-10 Cinema Rig....Video coming soon! Still waiting on parts to arrive!
Love it all, but powering it all from one battery is especially brilliant! One battery to monitor, and one battery to buy several copies of. Legendary. And presumably, with the right setup, you can also power that via AC. I'm no pro, but because I am a keen amateur I often shoot some corporate talking heads for my employer and the odd client, mostly execs with super packed calendars. I often have to chain several people and I just sit and watch that battery drain as people do various takes makes me super anxious - knowing that they have to nail it before I'm out of battery because they won't be available again for another week or two. Now to try and find all this stuff in my country - or some supplier that actually ships here :(
Caleb is so apologetic in the morning. Sorry about the face. Sorry about the voice. Sorry about the noise. Man, I'm just happy you put together this video about this rig, I don't mind the voice, noise or the face.
Thanks Caleb. Another great rig. I now have several of your rigs in my playlists. It is always inspiring to watch your videos. Thanks for your dedication.
you can also lock gimbles out as well. ive done it on a ronin sc and it works pretty well so you can get a more hand held feel at different heights etc and of course you only need to tilt the lcd so its pretty easy to do.
@@mikkelstrm7202 The main set itself is the BMPCC4k with Metabones Speedbooster and SIGMA 18-35 ART or SIGMA 50-100 ART as main lens + others if needed. I agree with Rigs. I never cared for 1 cause i felt it would defeat purpose of lightweight with my Sony A6500.. but the versatility it gave is worth it and to be honest im able to hold my camera more stable at handheld with the handles i added. I barely use the gimbal now cause im loving the hand held look. Everything is Quick detach, in order to switch from gimbal and handheld..
Do you do video work outside of this channel?? I always wonder because you play with soooo many cameras and so much gear but I never see you making a short film or a RUclips travel video or something of that sort . With your talent and so much gear I wonder how would it look
I wonder this about like 90% of RUclips filmmaking channels I watch. Film Riot is the only one that frequently makes actual short films to my knowledge
I Built a cinema rig using the Nikon Z7 and while on location on top of Diamond Head a Filipino filmmaker on vacation made me an offer to buy the rig I just built.
The elusive search for the ultimate hand-held rig, 2019 edition. Put a padded nub somewhere on there to press against your shoulder and get the monitor onto something more stable than an arm and you've got it. Reminds me of the Man Cam.
Good to see your rig. I am doing my own version, slightly differently - just because of the bits that I have. I will have to make a video about it too. Well done for doing this. :)
Thank you for this video! It's so easy to add things as funds allow. And thanks for the low cost monitor option. I'm a photographer at heart that's getting in to video. This will certainly help with framing.
Great video again! We are also starting to shoot more and more from our hand, we shoot our next doc.from the hand. .. But, all in all, with a shoulder mount and one handle the whole rig much stable as we work without internal lens or camera stabilisation.
Thank you for putting together this kit and giving your use cases for including each piece. It looks like your external battery solution powers the camera with a dummy battery, which means the smallrig cage does have room for the dummy battery cable to clear the cage. Is that how the camera is powered on your rig v. USB-C?
i am not exaggerating when i say that this was so perfect bro. I love the handheld look, still stabilized, but not floaty. And i wanted a system setup like this for my a7iii. I've built a nice little setup myself, but that battery adapter is genius. The Sony FW50 batteries are terrible. Always carrying like 12 of them with me.

All very cool but the thing that makes dslr shooting unwieldy for a lot of us is sound. If we're working solo (and for a lot of jobs and/or creative projects, we need to make it economically feasible), we'll need decent mics (either a shotgun or lav or both) feeding a preamp or a separate recorder. A complete rig really has to include the ability to do that. For most job/projects, I'm not sure this setup is preferable to the Canon C100. Thoughts?
