Tip for buttons: Instead of tape use blue tak or similar putty. You can really press it in to the point that it depresses into some of the crevices, and keeps it from going on the buttons.
Now that's an original video! Actually think the cream look on the GH5 looks better than white white. A Leica like bronze scuffing look around the edges would also be nice on a Sony A7 or GH5 🙂
please please please PLEASE make a update video on this camera… The biggest thing stopping me from doing this exact thing to my camera is I’m afraid that the paint wouldn’t hold up, or how the finish would look and feel on the almost rubbery faux leather, or that the camera wouldn’t be used as much due to me, not wanting to mess up the paint job. I would love to hear a one-year update about how it’s holding up!!!
I love this! It felt really refreshing to see a video on cameras that wasn’t about technical aspects, but about enjoying a little DIY sort of thing that would actually make your camera look cooler. Because it’s true, cameras are tools, BUT COOL TOOLS? They’re just the BEST!
Did the krylon fusion fully dry, or does it still have some tackiness? That's what I typically fear when painting over things like rubber grips. You never know how it'll react. Seeing this does make me want to paint my 5s. It would look real nice in red.
Painting a camera you definitely want to use several very light coats.Let dry between them. If you lay it on think, you will get into trouble around buttons, knobs and runny ugly looking paint. Great video 😁📸
I really like the dry brush technique, it seems it's the easiest way to paint. Also gives off steampunk look. I see lots of possibilities... and considering different colors for cages based on camera, perhaps brass for canon cage, and purple for sony cage to help identify them quickly.
Thanks for sharing this! The thing I love about the Leica community is how they mod & customize their older film cameras to give them some uniqueness. Very cool!!!
Use automotive paint, make sure to clear coat over it. Sand with 600-800 before you paint for adhesion purposes and try to disassemble most of it first. Any connecting points mask off so it doesn't interfere with fitment at the end. If it's a metal body use acid etch primer. Hope this helps.
I agree with many others here that cream looks much nicer than pure white! I just bought a S5 iix and, while most people seem to be a fan of the blacked out logos, I think it looks odd not being in the traditional Lumix colour scheme. So I am thinking about painting just the lettering. Not with a spray can, obviously, but with a brush. But I'm not sure which type of paint would be best, or if nail polish would actually work better. I'll do a bit more research before committing! 🙂
I love the cream WAY more than a true bright white for that camera. Just an entirely different vibe, more retro and subtle. Pure white and black can be a bit too much sometimes.
You know.... thank you!!! As someone that loves modded consoles for their invention and designs. I wondered if anyone would go that far with camera hardware. I've seen vinyl wraps, and silicone skins and such though
A masking technique used by modelers is to use silly putty. You can push the putty with a popsicle stick or other tool to get detail shapes. Then spray/airbrush. Putty can be kneaded after to be used a couple more times.
So I didn't do this on a camera, but on a controller, for the buttons, I used like kid's elmer's glue. After painting, it peeled off super easy and didn't leave anything behind.
I'm one of those who cringe at this BUT, it looks like your GH5 cage needs another coat or two to really make it shine. It looks like you can still see the base anodizing under the paint. A couple more coats will go a long way. I used to do customizing in a different industry many years ago and it's relatively easy to strip the anodizing, polish it up and send it out for anodizing with a different color or effects. Another route you could take is powder coating. It does add a few microns of thickness, so you'll want to talk to your powder coater if you have pieces with strict tolerances.
This idea has been on my mind for a long time, not for a body but to paint a black telelens to match the white telelenses by Sony, Canon & Nikon. I don't think there are other brands like Sigma, Tamron etc that do white variants of their lenses. Maybe you could paint a lens and a monitor as well, to get an all-white rig? As far as I've read on forums the reason why some brands make white telelenses is that they supposedly stay cooler by absorbing less sunlight, but I wouldn't think heat is such a big issue for most videographers (although a white camera body would definitely stay cooler for longer in direct sunlight, I don't know how much of a difference the lens would make). I think it just looks nicer and to the average person it may also look more expensive, which can help with clients perception of value
Unfortunately that's how the edges of all the new smallrig cages come. I prefer a uniform look. Cool ideas though. Paint is a bit tricky though, can peel if not prepped right, can become sticky, collect dirt easier, etc. There are paints specifically made for plastics, such as those used in hobby stores. I've flirted with the idea of doing some kondor blue coloring to my cage to match some cables but for now I haven't tried it. One idea is to go for a Plasti-dip first, because it's not permanent and you can literally peel it off after your testing until you get your process right.
Plastidip is a bit thicker but it peels off without damaging the surface or having to use solvents, and it has a nice rubbery grippy feel, but isn't glossy. Haven't used it on camera gear but have used it on other stuff, so YMMV.
Next time use primer and paints that promote adhesion to plastics. Also a matte 2k clear coat can really help durability and overall feeling of the finish in the end. The cream color looks cool at btw😊
I can't see any point in painting a camera body, unless you are an outdoor shooter primarily and either want better camouflage or just a white body to reflect the heat from the sun rather than absorb it. Black + sun ='s hot, I get it in that regard. I'm not booing the video, in-fact I gave a thumbs up! I just think for the time and effort vs end result and net gain, a vented cardboard box would work better for cooling and protection from the sun, as well as camouflage in certain areas. Also, blue painters tape, only, always.... Not dissing the video, just throwing my nickles worth of opinion your way. Cheers man 🍻
Great video, for the retired cameras I have, I went to the container store bought a display box.. would like to pain one too. this video remind me of the old days of DigitalRev with Kai.
I like the painting concept, but Caleb i would suggest testing putting some cables eg audio cable next to a painted product in a bag and come back in a month because paint can sometimes affect the vinly or reubber/silicone products its touching. Same with teh rubber grip part on a DLSR, teh pint can sometimes not settle but leave a tackyness due to reacting with the rubber. Finally the painting of the cheeseplates looks cool but i think it could falke off (more than the original paint) when you slide thinsg in and out of the cage , so it could create paint particles that get in your lenses or sensor over time. I dont want to sound negatve, but it is something to consider
Wow ! That's dope ! I wish one day I will be able to experiment with my camera. Hoverver I think that for now, for me, something so precious and expernsive as a camera will remain pretty untouched for about 10 to 15 years of use. I really enjoyed this video, however. Thank you for posting it !
As a rule paint with primer isn't especially good. It's essentially just thicker paint. It doesn't really promote adhesion the way a proper primer does. An etching primer is the way to go. And if you want a durable finish automotive or spray paints designed for things like grilles will normally be much tougher than basic spray paints. You should always test you paints. Test your paint with your primer, test it on the surface of the material. Test it with your clear. You are doing that to ensure that you aren't going to have a bad reaction between products and materials. Ideally you always want to send. But on a camera that would be pretty hard as you have materials like rubberized grips, and things of that nature that sanding would likely damage.
@@CamCitizenTV I thought about buying little white skins for my gopro9 to test and see. Hard to do with just one gopro and one battery, it would be variables crazy needing to use it in direct sunlight... but I still might try.
have you tried camera decal and stickers? i think it's much better than actually painting the gears. anyway as long as you're happy with the result of your project. in case you do try the decals you may want to make a video out of it as well, like comparing it to paint
Giving a camera the stormtrooper look is very very cool! I would be cautious paining gear that is not weatherproof. So no stormtrooping up my ‘ole G7 I think
Folks may want to consider using a respirator, or at the very least a mask, when sanding aluminum in close quarters. Inhaling particulate metals can seriously adversely affect one’s health.
Sanding the cage for wear and tear is the equivalent of buying your new skateboard and running the bottome along concrete and cement to give the impression that you grind. Nothing wrong but just give false experience. But hey ripped up jeans look cool and so do these, just be ready to hear alot of in person comments from people asking you how long you've had the camera only to disappoint them with the answer
Where can I get the model for the 3D printed Red camera? I've seen it in your other videos and have been trying to figure out how you did it and where to get it from for ages, it looks so cool!
You might want to try liquid mask for the buttons next time. You paint it on, and it peels off very easy. I bet even rubber cement could work like this. It would be much easier and more accurate compared to the masking tape. Bummer on the white...
While never painting a full camera, for years I covered either with paint or some tape all brandings on my cameras. Before doing that at nearly every job somebody came up to me just to compare his/her gear to mine and tell me how much better that would be. Since I'm covering the branding nearly went to zero interactions like that.
What did you use to seal the paint? I tried this and it was looking great until I used semi gloss clear coat. It got so thick and tacky and it peeled off my paint and captured my finger prints.
The paint on the camera is not going to last, use some IPA to clean everything before painting also get some primer for plastic before spraying the final color. And to protect your paint job on something like this get some 2K varnish.
Tip for buttons: Instead of tape use blue tak or similar putty. You can really press it in to the point that it depresses into some of the crevices, and keeps it from going on the buttons.
great point, bluetack is great for masking
Incredible advice thanks so much seriously !!
Awesome tip!
The creamy white actually gives it a cool look, I like it! 👍🏻
Almost a retro/antique look
Just add speckled black dots for the full Cookie’s and Cream look.
Now that's an original video! Actually think the cream look on the GH5 looks better than white white. A Leica like bronze scuffing look around the edges would also be nice on a Sony A7 or GH5 🙂

Why?

Yes in my experience rubber or latex can have a strange reaction to oil based paints.
Fun idea! One thing you could do is just hit it with a flat finish clear coat, especially the cage to keep the paint from rubbing/scratching off.
Best masking tape is modeling masking tape (I use Tamiya). Painters tape tends to let things bleed through on smooth surfaces. I love this idea!
i LOVE the cream color! looks even better than white to me. thx for the video :)

The dry brushing makes me think of my warhammer minis. Good video
I really like the cream color! it's like sand color and looks tactical!

This is the coolest camera thing I've ever seen!
I went from “this is crazy” to “that’s awesome” real quick. Very cool ideas! And I love that 3D printed white RED!
Very happy that you make this video. Gonna paint my camera all black soon 😊
I feel like this is something a gear reviewer would do for content since gear isn't regularly on set. Feels akin to neon underglow on a civic SI.
Love the black & white on the camera a lot. Also the bronze look on the cage.

the off white looks amazing imo, good job!

Looks nice! Amazing idea, thanks for the channel it has been really helpful for starting my agency! Greetings from Guatemala!
I’ve had so many questions about the white gear in your background- this is super fun!
That was fun! I did wince a little watching you spray paint the camera, but it came out nicely.
I am about to rattle can EVERYTHING! 🚀
Thats cream white GH5 looks like a prototype and i like it!
You know.... thank you!!!
As someone that loves modded consoles for their invention and designs.
I wondered if anyone would go that far with camera hardware.
I've seen vinyl wraps, and silicone skins and such though
the cream looks beautiful
looks like the patina on gear right out of star wars
I thought the same thing
Does the paint come off around the hinges of the LCD? With the cage, does it get scratched off when you attach other pieces?
I think, with multiple coats of paint and a final clear coat, should be enough to prevent paint from coming off
You can read my mind Caleb, I was about to do this to my camera for fun and now I know how❤
My Lumix g85 watching me watching the video: "I know what's on your dirty mind, don't even think about it" 🤔

Take a black sharpie to fill in that Lumix lettering. Will make it pop a little more
Now I'm thinking of painting my canon 6D mk1. Great camera and I think a little makeover wouldn't hurt.
hah this is great! I painted some of my rack gear white a couple years ago and have always thought about going a bit further with it!
I’m just gonna dip my a7iv in a bucket of high gloss white paint. Thanks for the tips!
So I didn't do this on a camera, but on a controller, for the buttons, I used like kid's elmer's glue. After painting, it peeled off super easy and didn't leave anything behind.
great video! Just enjoy the filmgear you use and even improve that experience ...I'm in!
A happy little camera
I've got a silver Canon Rebel T2 film camera that I've wanted to paint mat black for years, thanks for the tips!
Increases your gear's resale value by 7%😂❤

Caleb has done it again!
I would recommend using a Cerakote paint and sprayer. It’s much tougher and less prone to scratching.
This is really cool! Thanks for making the video. Some older gear that I know won’t resale well at all I might try this on

Caleb, it looks DOPE! I painted my old point and shoot film camera red back in 1999. I loved how it looked and maybe I'll paint my a6500.
Where did you find the 3D file for the RED camera? 😇
I can't see any point in painting a camera body, unless you are an outdoor shooter primarily and either want better camouflage or just a white body to reflect the heat from the sun rather than absorb it. That cream color looks 200 times better than white would! Even though you mask it, how do you stop paint from entering where the dials are?
Wow ! That's dope !

Pretty cool. Reminds me of something you'd see on the space station. Could make a cool prop too.
You can just use some acetone in some ear buds to clean the buttons, the acetone will evaporate and won't leave any residue.
Yo this looks like what youtuber Scott Yu-Jan has been doing, looks great!
I've always been curious to see if painting a camera white would help lessen outdoor sunlight overheating.
Scientifically, I don't see why not! Great idea!

Back in the GH2 days Panny actually made them in different colors like red. I wish manufacturers still did that with premium cameras.
