At last! Someone's giving this album justice!! One of the most overlooked, underrated, OBSCURED albums in the Floyd canon, probably my favourite to easily dive back into! It's such a weird piece in the history but I'm so grateful it was made and the band put that love care into it.
Some of Richard's piano figures are so magical, delicate and haunting, even the "country-ish" ones, that they never fail to get me emotional. The out-takes from Zabriskie Point are my favourite of these.
I"m assuming you may own it...but Richard Wright's solo album "Wet Dream" or something like that is REALLY good. It literally sounds like a Floyd album.

Spot on. My fave Floyd has always been 1968-72, when they lacked a dictator and functioned as a democracy. The music was artful and esoteric, but still allowed for some charm and even whimsey. For me, DSOTM was the beginning of a decline they never recovered from. I could not care less about their later huge popularity.
He was a shy introverted man...i guess he was not fully aware how good he was on organs & synths. Without him there is NO MYSTIC SOUND of Pink Floyd. And he was too much gentlemen to push & beg for more attention,or even starts a fight to achieve his dreams. He was there for the music. A true artist. All with Wright on it are my favorites! This album too! Roger was more active,but all were still like friends. After they became business partners...with all the damage such is causing on the involved persons. Love that pre DSOTM era. Their best!🧔🏼🫂😎🤷🏼♂️
That is the Pink Floyd 💗 sound, isn't it. So beautiful. David Gilmore used a jam he did with Richard in 2007 and records his new song with it. RUclips has a video of them playing.
As an afterthought, I'll add that some of Rick's mystique was lost when he switched from Hammond organ to synth. There's something very cold and mechanical about the sound of a synthesizer, at least back in those days (nowadays you can make one sound like just about anything). Rick Wright, to my ears, sounds best on organ (Farfisa and especially Hammond) and piano.
It was one of the very first albums I ever heard with the Floyd - my brother borrowed the album from a classmate's father and recorded several tracks off it onto one of his cassette tapes (I was around ten at the time) so it has never been lost on him or me. I heard "Mudmen" and "Childhood's End" at least two years before I first heard "Us and Them"! :) It's a very good album, with quality songwriting, playing and production.
When I was at Nick Mason's show a few years back, I was beyond thrilled to hear the band play "Obscured by Clouds" (the song), and "When You're In". So very unexpected!
I was 15 in '85... Began my Floyd education at that time... This is THE album best suited to MY TYPE of stoned teen excursions.. I really had significant deep thoughtful peacefulness while mind drifting and listening to this album
This is genuinely the most enjoyment I have received out of a video in months. So well made, so interesting, and the conclusion at the end is even more fascinating. It’s nice hearing about the last time the band was truly happy with one another, when Rick was still a massive contributor, when Roger wasn’t so egotistical, when they weren’t rich and just made music because it was fun. Also interesting to hear about the success in France, I never knew that.
I think it’s fitting that Obscured By Clouds is their most obscure album. Absolutely brilliant record and a shame it’s forgotten about, thanks for making this
When I first became a Floyd fan as a teen in the pre internet days, this was one of those albums you kind of had to discover for yourself, and then wondered why the hell it wasn't on any of those tapes other Floyd fans gave you to get you into the band. And that's maybe why fans have a soft spot for it. It's an unexpected gem. Great doc btw. I don't often get all the way through longer youtube vids, but no problem here.
Obscured by Clouds is such an underrated Floyd album, probably their most underrated album. I guess for two main reasons, first because it was a film soundtrack and thus isn't considered a proper album by many, and secondly because of the timing of it's release: just before Dark Side of the Moon, which of course changed everything for the band. But to me at least, it's in my top 5 favorite Floyd albums. Imo the essential and peak Floyd period was from 1971-1975, and those 4 successive albums: Meddle, Obscured by Clouds, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. Obscured is an album people need to pay more attention to and contains some real gem tracks like "Wots Uh the Deal", "Childhood's End", "Mudmen", "The Gold It's in the" and "Stay".
Hands down my all-time favorite Pink Floyd album through and through since I first heard it in my youth, I've never wavered from this position. I asked Waters on the Rockline radio show how I could find this film back in '84/'85 and he responded "I have no idea, Dewey." I found a copy of the film not long after that. Great doc here, especially love the attention to audio detail with mixing in isolated tracks. Great job!
@@deweypm More is in there I just remembered. It’s a shame those films weren’t really good. Imagine making a film and receiving the music from the More album to use for soundtrack material. Incredible filmic opportunities. Both the music and the cover of More kind of produced its own, imaginary movie. Way better than the actual film.

This is honestly the most overlooked album in Floyd’s catalogue. I absolutely love it. Everything is interesting and has a great melody. I’d rather listen to it over Atom Heart Mother or Ummagumma or the Final Cut. Great album just like “More” which is also a solid album that is also over looked by fans. Great episode. Cheers ✌️
Thank you for this documentary. I always appreciated Obscured by Clouds since I was a kid and I think that it's always been underrated. I love that jazzy piano by Rick and those 2 vocals melodies by David. This album was unfortunately obscured by the next Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here but the documentary shows how much this album might have influenced the further composing style. I love this album. The positive outlook within the band shines through. "Stay" is such a beautiful song; I think it's the finest collaboration between Wright and Waters.
One of my Fave Pink Floyd albums. I bought my first La Valle/ Obscured By clouds in July ,1975, shortly after my first of 9 Pink Floyd concerts! "Wot's the deal" whole album has been so great to hear- 49 years for me.....
It's a shame that the album gets overlooked compared with the rest of the Pink Floyd catalog. It's a great collection of music! And speaking of "great": you made yet another great documentary ❤
This was my first Floyd album, bought for £1.99 when it came out, on the basis of an NME or MM review. When I saw the Australian Pink Floyd Show in Toulouse in February, they performed a very heavy, loud version of the title track and it worked very well.
Thank you for covering this hidden gem! The band is truly in tune with one another at this point in their career, Rick's playing inparticular is definitely a stand out!
It's always an event whenever you drop a new doc on us. You, by far, produce the best music documentaries on RUclips or anywhere else for that matter. The research you put into these things is commendable. I appreciate the visual content as well, many clips and photos I've never seen. And as per usual I always learn something new! I won't go on about how much I love this tossed aside Floyd album. If you're here it's a good bet that you love this album as well. Wot's..uh the Deal is one of my favourite Floyd tunes.

This is one of my all time fave Floyd albumss, My fave era outside of the Piper Lp is 68-72 right before DSOM...there's a nice warm organic feel to their stuff in this era.. I need to see this film though, saw More and it was what it was, I am sure this is what it is as well but it would be nice to finally put it fully in to context. Great job on the video btw.
An overlooked classic that barely gets a mention in any ‘official’ documentaries or by any of the members of the band. I think it’s an important milestone in the bands history and sets the foundations for how the band would go onto compose in the future ( contemporary songwriting structures etc..). I recall having a copy on original tape ( bought second hand from BackTracks in Liverpool). Pre internet, for years I could never find any worthwhile information about this album. Still a mystery why the band never continued to perform any of the tracks live either as a band or as a solo performer in years to come. Brilliantly constructed doc, thank you 🙏

Love this album. Never saw it as a soudtrack. Even made a compilation with this more bucolic period of PF, with songs from here Atom Heart and Meddle. As for the movie, forgot it long ago. Great video.

I absolutely love this record! I think it's one of those hidden gems that will surprise and delight Pink Floyd fans who haven't yet explored beyond the "classic five" released from '73-'83.
Thank you, @progrockdocs! I enjoyed this look into the album, and learned some interesting facts I was unaware of. I bought OBC as a teenager, some time in the early 80's, after I had slowly collected the more mainstream successes from Dark Side up to The Wall. One very interesting element to OBC, to me, is another lyrical foundation Waters lays, to which he will make reference in later songs. But also, the musical input from Richard really shines! He was one of a kind. I liked & subbed!
Obscured By Clouds might be my favorite Pink Floyd album. A link between older Floyd and DSOTM, OBC has it's own identity that was soon tampled by worldwide success.
The sense of musical spontaneity throughout this album is palpable. By the time of Wish You Were Here spontaneity was almost absent, replaced by a sense of almost sterile deliberation, and it was never to resurface.

Another great video. I bought a Synthi A synthesizer (the suitcase version of the VCS3) after listening to this album. I used the synth until 2020 when I sold it making a 1,250% profit, thank you Floyd 😊

Great video! This album never gets the respect it deserves! Thank you for covering this little known gem. One thing I noticed is there are a couple of songs that aren't discussed here. This makes me think there is more to this album than what is known due to the songs not covered.
A beautiful and well crafted documentary, as only Rael can do. A commentary on each track and its use on La Valleé movie, for which this album was made. At the end, a remark of its importance as a predecessor to Dark Side. My recommendation is to watch it on a TV screen.
My favorite PF album by far. Just a great bunch of songs with great singing and playing and with everyone writing. I wish they'd done several albums like it.
I brought this album when it first came out and loved it. Great songs and fantastic that Richard Wright, my favourite Floyd singer, gets to feature more than he did on later albums. The theme of the movie almost pre dates the narrative of Apocalypse Now!
At one my favorite band , after the Dark Side i lost all interest in the band 💔. So way back thier coming to the Academy of Music ,thier first gig of the Dark Side tour . I got the last ticket ,in the balcony. Its was a late start 11 : 00pm . Thier was a curtain in front of the main curtain. The lights dimmed and fog filled the stage .Then the deep G of Obscure by Clouds starts and the bands is on a moving stage coming thru the fog ! It blew all of minds . Any body there ?
Great doc. The film was abysmal though. Just like More, the music way outshone the film. I love the cover. I have a Japanese version of the album which did a much better job printing that image. It fits. Now, could you do a doc on More and Ummagumma? These albums don’t get much praise in books or magazine articles but they are superb albums. In particular even the band slags off Ummagumma like it was a failed experiment. It’s an absurdly great album. It really needs its own, magnificent documentary complete with a collection of studio photographs as great as the ones you’ve shown in this doc. It’s so nice to see the band as I once perceived them: actually a band of brothers happy to come together and engage in the process of creating amazing music with all contributing.
Obscured by Clouds is my third favourite Floyd album after The Wall and Dark Side respectively. I have my original copy in cd format and I have been listening to recently. In fact it had been ages since I had been listening to and it was a very moving experience!
Very cool video ! I saw a documentary about the Château d'Hérouville a few months ago, that was a very unique place to record some musical stuff. Anyway, I love this album which is, like other comments say, criminally underrated in the Floyd's discography. (very funny reference to wish you were here at the end)
I've always said and will continue to say, that from their 2nd album to right before Dark side is their absolute best work. Thats the stuff i always go back to the most. It was an incredible 5 year span of just pure gold and i wish there was more of it...they were so creative and innovative in that time span. Its insane
This album is definitely not for the casual Pink Floyd fan. But for those who like to take a deep dive into a shallow pool in the desert, will bathe in this beautiful oasis of an album. PLAY LOUD
I won a radio trivia contest and a year’s supply of releases from Columbia Records? Idk. It was a long time ago. It wound up being a couple dozen LP’s. A couple Steve Miller, pre commercial era recordings. Pretty good. Flash - In The Can, Peter Bank’s Yes offshoot, imo their best album. And this. I adored Obscured By Clouds after just a few spins, and I have ever since. Many say Meddle was Floyd gearing up to Dark Side form, and such it may have been, but I think there would never have been Dark Side Of The Moon without Obscured By Clouds. Mudmen is brilliant, and has one of those wonderful Rick Wright piano/keyboard chord progressions reminiscent of The Great Gig In The Sky that there is just isn’t ever going to be enough of to satisfy me. Stay is beautiful, as is Wots. What a great album, one that we old Floyd fans treasure very nearly in secret. Wonderful. Actually, this might have been the last rays of the early, pastoral Pink Floyd shining from an unsuspecting musical sunset. In ways it outshines everything else they ever did.
Many of the Dark Side songs were already written by the time they recorded this album in June '72, they had been playing rough takes of them live for some time and had a fairly clear idea of the coming Dark Side album (unlike let's say Sgt Pepper, Dark Side was recorded during briefer sessions spread out over nearly a year and interspersed with touring). So I think they had already conceptualized their big breakthrough album before they recorded OBC, but some of the songs on the movie album come from the same world of sounds and ideas - "Childhood's End" has so many parallels with "Time" that it was probably derived from a reworked draft of the DSOTM song. OBC is one of the very first albums I heard and got to know by the Floyd, I even heard it (and Wish You Were Here) before I got to know DSOTM;, so it was never lost on me.
Just fantastic, I'm so pleased you covered this one. One of my favourites by anyone and criminally underrated - totally engulfed by Meddle and DSOTM. My favourite Floyd album. They were still working together as a team, and there’s a nice balance of material on the album.

This is one of my all time fave Floyd albumss, My fave era outside of the Piper Lp is 68-72 right before DSOM...there's a nice warm organic feel to their stuff in this era..
I need to see this film though, saw More and it was what it was, I am sure this is what it is as well but it would be nice to finally put it fully in to context.

My favorite Pink Floyd album. I think it’s deeply under rated.
An overlooked classic that barely gets a mention in any ‘official’ documentaries or by any of the members of the band. I think it’s an important milestone in the bands history and sets the foundations for how the band would go onto compose in the future ( contemporary songwriting structures etc..). I recall having a copy on original tape ( bought second hand from BackTracks in Liverpool). Pre internet, for years I could never find any worthwhile information about this album. Still a mystery why the band never continued to perform any of the tracks live either as a band or as a solo performer in years to come. Brilliantly constructed doc, thank you 🙏

Love this album. Never saw it as a soudtrack. Even made a compilation with this more bucolic period of PF, with songs from here Atom Heart and Meddle. As for the movie, forgot it long ago. Great video.
Another home run, Rael! Obscured by clouds has always been one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums… disjointed though it may seem at first listen. Knew very little about this album except that it was used in a movie. Fascinating… Thanks for posting!

I absolutely love this record! I think it's one of those hidden gems that will surprise and delight Pink Floyd fans who haven't yet explored beyond the "classic five" released from '73-'83.

Thank you, @progrockdocs! I enjoyed this look into the album, and learned some interesting facts I was unaware of. I bought OBC as a teenager, some time in the early 80's, after I had slowly collected the more mainstream successes from Dark Side up to The Wall. One very interesting element to OBC, to me, is another lyrical foundation Waters lays, to which he will make reference in later songs. But also, the musical input from Richard really shines! He was one of a kind.

Obscured By Clouds might be my favorite Pink Floyd album. A link between older Floyd and DSOTM, OBC has it's own identity that was soon tampled by worldwide success.

The sense of musical spontaneity throughout this album is palpable. By the time of Wish You Were Here spontaneity was almost absent, replaced by a sense of almost sterile deliberation, and it was never to resurface.
A very underrated album. Lots of good material in this. I love Mudmenin particular.

Great video! This album never gets the respect it deserves! Thank you for covering this little known gem. One thing I noticed is there are a couple of songs that aren't discussed here. This makes me think there is more to this album than what is known due to the songs not covered.
Are you suggesting there are Obscured By Clouds unreleased tracks? I very much doubt it, but would love to know more if there are!

Been my favourite since first listening to it when I was about 16.. Now 52, and still find it enchanting.
A beautiful and well crafted documentary, as only Rael can do. A commentary on each track and its use on La Valleé movie, for which this album was made. At the end, a remark of its importance as a predecessor to Dark Side. My recommendation is to watch it on a TV screen.

I brought this album when it first came out and loved it. Great songs and fantastic that Richard Wright, my favourite Floyd singer, gets to feature more than he did on later albums. The theme of the movie almost pre dates the narrative of Apocalypse Now!

At one my favorite band , after the Dark Side i lost all interest in the band 💔. So way back thier coming to the Academy of Music ,thier first gig of the Dark Side tour . I got the last ticket ,in the balcony. Its was a late start 11 : 00pm . Thier was a curtain in front of the main curtain. The lights dimmed and fog filled the stage .Then the deep G of Obscure by Clouds starts and the bands is on a moving stage coming thru the fog ! It blew all of minds . Any body there ?

Great doc. The film was abysmal though. Just like More, the music way outshone the film. I love the cover. I have a Japanese version of the album which did a much better job printing that image. It fits. Now, could you do a doc on More and Ummagumma? These albums don’t get much praise in books or magazine articles but they are superb albums. In particular even the band slags off Ummagumma like it was a failed experiment. It’s an absurdly great album. It really needs its own, magnificent documentary complete with a collection of studio photographs as great as the ones you’ve shown in this doc. It’s so nice to see the band as I once perceived them: actually a band of brothers happy to come together and engage in the process of creating amazing music with all contributing.
Obscured by Clouds is my third favourite Floyd album after The Wall and Dark Side respectively. I have my original copy in cd format and I have been listening to recently. In fact it had been ages since I had been listening to and it was a very moving experience!
Very cool video ! I saw a documentary about the Château d'Hérouville a few months ago, that was a very unique place to record some musical stuff. Anyway, I love this album which is, like other comments say, criminally underrated in the Floyd's discography. (very funny reference to wish you were here at the end)

Love this album as much as I love all of their music including solo albums. Rick Wright is so much more than he was given credit for.
I've always said and will continue to say, that from their 2nd album to right before Dark side is their absolute best work. Thats the stuff i always go back to the most. It was an incredible 5 year span of just pure gold and i wish there was more of it...they were so creative and innovative in that time span. Its insane

This album is definitely not for the casual Pink Floyd fan. But for those who like to take a deep dive into a shallow pool in the desert, will bathe in this beautiful oasis of an album. PLAY LOUD
I won a radio trivia contest and a year’s supply of releases from Columbia Records? Idk. It was a long time ago. It wound up being a couple dozen LP’s. A couple Steve Miller, pre commercial era recordings. Pretty good. Flash - In The Can, Peter Bank’s Yes offshoot, imo their best album.
And this. I adored Obscured By Clouds after just a few spins, and I have ever since.
Many say Meddle was Floyd gearing up to Dark Side form, and such it may have been, but I think there would never have been Dark Side Of The Moon without Obscured By Clouds.
Mudmen is brilliant, and has one of those wonderful Rick Wright piano/keyboard chord progressions reminiscent of The Great Gig In The Sky that there is just isn’t ever going to be enough of to satisfy me.
Stay is beautiful, as is Wots.
What a great album, one that we old Floyd fans treasure very nearly in secret. Wonderful.
Actually, this might have been the last rays of the early, pastoral Pink Floyd shining from an unsuspecting musical sunset.
In ways it outshines everything else they ever did.
Many of the Dark Side songs were already written by the time they recorded this album in June '72, they had been playing rough takes of them live for some time and had a fairly clear idea of the coming Dark Side album (unlike let's say Sgt Pepper, Dark Side was recorded during briefer sessions spread out over nearly a year and interspersed with touring). So I think they had already conceptualized their big breakthrough album before they recorded OBC, but some of the songs on the movie album come from the same world of sounds and ideas - "Childhood's End" has so many parallels with "Time" that it was probably derived from a reworked draft of the DSOTM song.
OBC is one of the very first albums I heard and got to know by the Floyd, I even heard it (and Wish You Were Here) before I got to know DSOTM;, so it was never lost on me.
Just fantastic, I'm so pleased you covered this one. One of my favourites by anyone and criminally underrated - totally engulfed by Meddle and DSOTM.
